A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Improbable Happenings

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 17, 2016

Maybe the Padres have just had the worst luck of any team in the history of baseball? The most potent 62 win team in the league?

Is it possible the Cardinals are worse than San Diego? Of course not. I think I am being too linear with everything. “This team lost to this team so they are worse than this team…” That doesn’t work in baseball. Any team can beat any team in a series for a variety of reasons.

And for whatever those reasons are, we are beating St Louis rather handily right now.

I saw something last night, didn’t understand it, maybe you guys could help me out. It was the 4th inning and Buster Posey hit a ball in the air (no seriously, he did) and it flew and kept flying and it ended up going over that wall that separates the fans from the field. Then for some reason play just kinda stopped. Buster was running slower than usual around the bases and the fans were cheering. Cardinals were standing around, nothing was happening and the ball he hit was never returned to the field of play. What exactly happened there? Did the Giants or Buster get penalized because Buster seemed to have inadvertently lost the ball they were using?

It’s Saturday. Go dominate this great day….

I was wondering why Z-Span wasn’t given 3rd base when the 2nd baseman tripped him when he tried to go to 3rd on the wild pickoff throw.

Buster running slower than usual? That’s his top speed.

Reminds me of Monty Python…Bring out your dead.
Well I’m not quite dead yet.

Belt said something about Posey actually smiling and loosening up a bit off his normal stoneface, and Posey deadpanned reporters questions afterward about the HR drought.
Still and all he is the best dang C out there, hitting .298 (yes with a lot of singles) and top defense (just like Crawford). Molina is good too, but that was costly error he made last night. Giants rake another Cards SP.

Read an ESPN short column on 3 flawed WC teams pointing out varied strengths of each. Giants SP ERA near top of league and so is runs saved by defense.

Gene Richards (from checklist) was a cool Padre.

Krukow gave a completely wrong explanation of shingles last night. I think Greg Papa was kind of dumbfounded with how wrong Krukow was.
Papa: “It’s a painful skin rash, right?”
Krukow: “No, it has nothing to do with the skin.”

Another name off the checklist that got me was Bert Campaneris.
I always liked this guy ever since A’s left KC and moved to Oaktown.
Plus he is responsible for one signature moment (akin to Marichal) for throwing his bat right over the head of Tigers pitcher who beaned him in the ankle ’72 playoffs, year A’s eventually won it all.

If not for Campy, no one would remember Lerrin Lagrow…

The guy on the Dodgers who was the most publicly outraged at Marichal’s suspension (10 days) and fine ($1,750.00) was none other than future SF broadcaster, Ron Fairly. I recall him saying Marichal should’ve got 1,750 days…

Yeah at one point they were showing Poesy in the dugout putting on his gear and he broke out a goofy grin and gave a thumbs-up. Way out of character.

I felt like I was one of hundreds of thousands of Giants fans watching that blast from Posey head toward the wall urging it to actually go over the fence this one time. It was like the whole deal was in slow motion because it such an epic accomplishment. It looked like he was even grinning a bit heading back to the dugout after touching home. That was a huge moment—Sam Rutigliano would have compared it to an enema.
The Campaneris bat-fling is one of the my earliest memories of watching baseball on TV. I was at my next door neighbor’s house at the time. I was also at his house during the Immaculate Reception. Growing up, my house was never the “let’s go hang out at Pete’s house” kind of place. My mom ran way too tight of a ship to allow any of the fun that boys of any age like to get into. She still runs a tight ship to this day, and she’s coming up on 92.

Craig, great thread and one of the most sarcastically funny things I’ve read in awhile. But I don’t know about Posey… some of you saw smiles, but I saw a bit of a grimace on his swing, is he still hurt?, and then that thumbs up thing didn’t look exactly joyful. Almost a sarcastic “fuck you, camera man, yeah, here’s my thumb’s up … your ass”…. Not sure how *fun* he is in the clubhouse. Hey, dude, you’re the de facto captain, if you produce, it’s all gravy. Now we need another good game from Large Smarge. And yes, the Bald Eagle has landed, in Saigon, saw Steve this afternoon for a bit, will catch up with him more soon.

Moore did a good job pitching through control issues but those poorly timed walks jacked his pitch count. I checked his stats and since coming to SF he’s close to issuing more walks than the rest of his season in the AL.

On willied’s comment late last night re: Span.
Not surprised he’s making noise about not being right this season after surgery, I predicted he/Giants would float that one after the season, so he’s early. Going 3 for 49 or whatever and getting roasted by fans must have forced play of the surgery card. I don’t doubt there’s some truth in it — Sabevans paid $30 million for damaged goods, and nobody forced them to do it. Lack of OF talent in the SF minors did. The Cards and other orgs regularly crap minor league OFers that are better than the Giants’ farmhand OFers…

Penn State home game today. It’s honoring the memory of Joe “I enabled a child molester monster for decades” Paterno. Disgusting, and beyond tone deaf. Franco Harris is calling on the university to apologize for firing the beloved see-no-evil, hear-no-evil JoPa that ruled there for 50 years. F him and other ex-players and alums with the same tunnel vision that ignores the evidence. I read lots of info from various sources on this including court transcripts. Chilling. He KNEW, and he knew in the ’90s, if not way earlier. Others in position of power knew. If PSU handed a Snarkette a full ride offer, I’d tell them to shove it. Sure there are good people there, and its good scholastically. But, still, in view of all the suffering of victims that has been revealed, today’s “celebration” shows that it’s a warped place with a gutter institutional ethos that could easily look the other way at a football player raping a co-ed…

It is arguable, barely, that Paterno in his old age was clueless about this stuff, and it passed over his head. But, this dude in his younger days and even towards the end, was THE guy at Penn State. If you crossed his ass for whatever reason and you worked for the University, he would be able to bury you. The evidence is overwhelming that there is no way he didn’t know about Sandusky, the only question is actually when did he first know it. Whenever it was, it was surely well, well before the final incident that blew up the Sandusky scandal. The friggin’ monster for years would take kids from that charity organization on road trips and trips to bowl games, fer Kreissakes. I consider that scandal to be one of the worst, if not the worst, scandal in the modern history of US college sports. Beyond horrendous. Pedophiles, IMO, next to murderers, are the worst of the worst, they cannot be rehabbed. They plot, plan and gain confidence of kids, and then prey on them…

Yesterday Trump basically admits he lied for half a decade about this birther nonsense. With no new evidence rolling in, Yep, Obama always was a US citizen. Somehow that admission of the big lie is supposed to be a good thing for him — and he immediately covered it with a new lie that it was Hillary, not him, that instigated and was pushing that lie all along. Then, he again makes thinly veiled threats that maybe somebody should shoot her. WTF? I don’t get how a charlatan and fraud like this POS has even a chance of winning this election. Loo, Subway became a good place for me, with practice. I know what I like there now, and so with all those many options they have, I basically narrowed it down to something like: Turkey foot-long, with Swiss cheese, on a 7-grain roll, not heated, with everything on it, except no olives and no hot peppers. The only condiment I want on it is honey mustard. So I zip through that place pretty quickly, without agonizing over all the choices.

And I’ll be darned, he put that sandwich in some kind of heating device. Oh well. 🙂 I still took the sandwich. I’m just not a big one for making a big deal about stuff like that.

Invisible clothes pins couldn’t have raised that cloth in two points more neatly, but the clothes pins wouldn’t’ve moved like that as she worked. I was mesmerized. “You got the hots?” she demanded. “What?” “You want the hots?” she repeated. “Uh, yeah, sure.” She sprinkled sliced hot peppers onto the sandwich. The paralegal kid who’d accompanied me to New Hampshire ordered next. He kept a straight face the entire time, until we sat down outside at a picnic table in the shade of a maple tree. We bit into the sandwiches. Very good. Then the kid suddenly said “The hots! The hots!” and reached dramatically for his iced tea, laughing like hell.

When I was a poor college student, one of the part-time jobs I had was shelving library books at night. A friend of mine asked me one time: “Do you have sex in the library?” I was kind of perplexed at his question for a moment. And then he laughed, realizing the miscommunication, and said: “I mean “Sex,” the Madonna photo book” that had just been published a few months before. That friend was often like that, leaving out some crucial bit of information on something.

  38. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 17, 2016 at 5:41 pm

I had a few embarrassing moments at that library job, although I did like the job, in spite of minimum wage pay. My supervisor, an older woman who had a southern accent, handed me a box one night and said “Please take this it to mayoll.” I didn’t know what she meant. And I kind of dumbly repeated “To mayoll?” And she actually blushed. She then said “M-E-L, mayoll.” She meant Mel, a guy who worked in the basement area of the library, in the book-repair area. I felt bad for having sort of accidentally made a thing about her accent. It had embarrassed her. She was a terrific supervisor. It wasn’t a great job, and she did things like bring birthday cakes to celebrate birthdays on our crew.

Some politician down south innocently got in trouble with the media a few years ago because the word “retired” sounded like “retard” in a speech he made…

        Maybe he’s the retard..
Like years ago Ross Perot’s running mate..A 5 star general named James Stockdale. When they had a debate with the other VP’s, the panel would ask him a question and he had this dementia look on his face like a bomb fragment lit him up, and after a loooong pause he mumbled out something not irrelevant..” Yeah like I want that guy pushing a button to start a nuclear war”

He’s got to know Nunez is fast enough to make it. That intentional out on the throw home is so over-used in MLB in so many situations when it’s not needed. You’d think managers would get tired of it. If the thirdbase coach sends the guy, the guy on first shouldn’t be making the willy-nilly decision to sacrifice himself.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 17, 2016 at 7:37 pm

I assume that’s what Span was doing. He had to have seen the cut-off man, I would think.
