A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Did We Really Get Screwed There?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 30, 2016

The St. Louis Cardinals need to reconfigure that left field wall. It’s absurd that Molina’s ball was ruled a GRD. Price is whining about only having 10 seconds to decide and I agree with him about that. But he’s the manager, he’s supposed to know the rules and the configuration of the park. That ball CLEARLY hit up against the advertisement wall, anyone could see that. I’m not sure how all the umpires missed it when the announcers caught it right away (as well as Duvall, more on him in a moment). I’m assuming this happens a lot is St Louis because of that inexplicably configured wall. How is everyone playing and/or umpiring not critically aware of this?

And again, why would the Cardinals even be so dumb as to set this up to be so controversial? We’ve got ads out in left field, if the ball hits an ad it’s just part of the field of play. The way it looks to me, there is about an 8 inch (or so) break between the wall and the the ad wall above it. It may be set back slightly too, I can’t tell. But why create such a muddled situation? They are both walls, if a ball bounces off either one it should still be considered in the field of play. At the VERY least, paint a giant yellow line at the bottom of the ads to distinguish between the two walls.

A ground rule double is a ball hit fairly that leaves the field of play. Did Molina’s ball look like it reasonably left the field of play to any of you?

Duvall was interviewed after the game. Nobody had a better look at where that ball hit than him. He said “I definitely knew it hit the sign but I wasn’t sure if that was a ground rule double or not.” Look, the Reds deserve major blame in this, too. When we would play away softball games the first thing everyone did pre-game was walk the field with the ump and he would tell us what was considered a home run and what wasn’t. How, at the major league level, do you not inform your freaking left fielder about that stupid ass ad wall being a ground rule double? Shouldn’t their version of Wotus have gone over that with him? That’s just incompetence as far as I’m concerned. Duvall could have started screaming for their to be a protest/review but he just walked off the field because he didn’t know the rule…….

If you feel like laughing about this instead of steaming, this is a pretty funny tweet.

Hey Cards, Giants see your Devil Magic and raise you some Even Year Bullshit

I saw it clearly as you and the Reds announcers then said it was in the field of play so I gave it no more thought and drifted off around midnight…are they saying that was an incorrect call now?

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on September 30, 2016 at 5:32 am

Ok just reading now the story and now they say it should be a ground rule double?? Why the f in a playoff situation are the umpires running for cover…there better be some league chastisement that the Reds had to chase down the umpires…

I did get one in and was violently awakened a half hour later late getting daughter 1 to a lacrosse game…damnit. therefore not making it past the 5th inning for a home game…I do have a knack awakening around the 8th inning. Fortunately last night when I did, we had a lead by then thank God.

I agree the umps are mostly to blame since it’s their job to enforce the rules and as dumb of a rule as that is, the ball CLEARLY hit the ad wall. Price should also have known what that wall meant and immediately challenged. But again, it’s hard to be too mad about a rocket that Molina hit off a damn wall for the win. That should have been a clean win for the Cards and they need to fix that wall issue in the off season as well as changing that dumbass 10 second rule at the end of the game….

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on September 30, 2016 at 6:47 am

And the Reds were blind lucky tying it up as it was. Cards were probably going to win after Molina put runner at third with one out…

  3. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on September 30, 2016 at 6:40 am

I guess the MLB rule doesn’t give a manager as much time to call a challenge on a game ending play as they get on a 4th inning play at First. WTF is up with that? Per the rule Price pretty much would have had to challenge the play right when the player touched Home, also Price is below field level and doesn’t have the same angle as the Third base ump does, so I’m not sure how much blame I could put on him. Now, Duvall not knowing the rule is the major fuck up (well that and the Umps missed it). The dude should have been waving his arms and yelling dead ball. No doubt MLB will review the park configuration, the challenge rule and why the Umps missed the call…

I’ve gotta say I loved the Reds playing all out in that series. Truly trying to be a spoiler, when it seems like so many teams that are out of it now days just mail it in.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 30, 2016 at 6:51 am

Price was standing at the top of the dugout steps. That “below field excuse” was bullshit outta him. Is he trying to say he never sees where the ball ends up when he’s in that dugout? Hogwash. I agree with everything else you said. Bozo the clown is the man.

It wasn’t exactly clear to Cardinal fans last night either. The signs sit about six feet (maybe) behind the wall, so they are technically out of play. Usually it works the other way–I’ve seen a number of balls bounce back and the batter stops at second, only to be awarded a home run after replay because it hit those signs and not the wall. I’m not sure what the thought process was when they were building the park 10 years ago, though I’m guessing they wanted the advertising but didn’t want to add to the wall height. Given that Busch typically plays as a pitcher’s park anyway, that was probably a wise idea.

It’s tough to say what the Reds should have done, though the umpires did not hurry off the field–you can see them still there as the team mobs Carpenter. Price says he couldn’t hear the phone due to the crowd and everything, but he also said he didn’t know there was anything to review until someone told him, so he wasn’t listening for the phone. It’s fine to say that it should be reviewed, but it feels like to me that after waiting around for 30+ seconds, it’s tough to go back to the review.

I’m not a huge fan of replay myself, so take that bias into account as well, but it feels to me that if we start waiting around to celebrate walk-offs, it’s going to take some of the fun out of the game. I get the “we should get it right” bit, but there’s emotion in the game as well. Otherwise we just simulate the season and be done with it.

All that said, even if the call is right it’s still 3-3 with runners on second and third and Stephen Piscotty coming up against the Reds bullpen. I’m not saying that they’d have gotten the run in–goodness knows I’ve watched this team enough to not have any confidence in that–but even so, they’d have had extra innings. I think there are strong odds they’d have won the game anyway.

Maybe baseball just wanted to reward Seung-hwan Oh, who “blew” a save on a misplay by the center fielder and a 50 foot swinging bunt. 🙂

I also don’t think it’s going to matter. Y’all took care of business last night, which kept the one game lead. The odds of the Cardinals sweeping this weekend are pretty slim. My bet is both teams wind up going 2-1 and this is just a footnote to the season.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 30, 2016 at 7:57 am

good rundown. It still sounds like the bigger issue is the ad wall. There is no reason for it to be causing this type of confusion.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on September 30, 2016 at 8:47 am

Daniel, I completely agree that the Cards likely win the game so I am not worked up about it. But that was not and should not have been a hard call to make for the umpires without a review. I love the replay but i think it has also made some of the umps lazy about getting a call right. That was too easy woth inportant implications mot to get it right.

If we end the season tied, they should make the Reds go back and finish that game on Monday:)))

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 30, 2016 at 10:07 am

I call TOTAL Bulllshitt on the proposition that we can’t wait 30 seconds or a minute to protest a game winning call that is WRONG, and would be clearly overturned on a replay review. So, you play 3 HOURS of a game, with guys stepping out, shaking off signs, scratching their balls, pitching coaches going to the mound, catchers going out to the mound and wasting time constantly — yet you can’t wait 30 fuckin seconds to make sure the game is decided correctly? Total, absolute bullshit logic, and I’m sick of hearing this kind of thinking. GET the call right, period. Especially, absolutely, if the call decides the damn game in a walk off. If the Cards have a false walk off scrum and have to go back to the dugout and sit, that’s just hard cheese. Phuck the Cards. An entire season can be and has often been decided by one game. See Pads v. Giants 2010, game 162. Scrum “fun” is more important than having the “winning” team actually and fairly win the game? WTF is this, Dancing With The Stars or MLB? Look up Flannery’s twittershit comment on this, he is a career baseball man, and is hacked OFF — because this goes to the integrity of the game. What if this were a game 7 in an NLCS? Does this timing rule control — the Cards and their fun scrum get to go to the WS even though they didn’t actually win? Essentially, that game last night was a playoff game. So, if the Giants get screwed by one game for the WC by the Cards or tie for it and have to go there Monday, we’re supposed to say, oh, well, we’re cool, poor Cards couldn’t wait a minute there in St. Louis, they had to have their scrum fun, and then go get their post game Budweisers without being called back? If it does not matter that the team declared the winner does not actually win, then hell, why not play 3 hours, tied after nine, the clubs make their money — so to save time we just draw straws to crown the winner?…

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on September 30, 2016 at 2:15 pm

Boom. With the apparatus in place to review plays like this, it’s unfathomable that it can get past the very system put in place to prevent things like this. It’s beyond stupid

The 10 second time period is bullshit and I fully expect that to be changed this off-season. With the game’s outcome hanging in the balance, getting it right is all that matters, ESPECIALLY a game with playoff implications. The Cards MAY have won anyway, but they MAY NOT have won.

If the Giants end up missing the playoffs because of this game, the onus will be squarely on them for dramatically underperforming the entire second have, but ending of the Cards-Reds game will forever be hugely controversial.

I’m sure Card’s fans would love to have had the Don Denkinger play overturned and added another WS trophy to their collection. That didn’t happen and St. Louis fans have been rightly outraged ever since. This is no different. Less magnitude, okay, but the same principle, only this time with a system in place to prevent bullshit like this from ever happening.

I agree with Price’s point that the umps had a better vantage point from the field and should maybe get the call right or at least consult when the game ends on a play like that. The rest is on he and his coaches. Duvall being brain dead is part of that. Did the Giants get screwed? I don’t thinks so. It’s not like they’ve been able to take advantage of numerous opportunities to lock down the WC spot.

And using one of the Giant’s favorite means…RTI (Runs Thrown In). No, I did not make that shit up…someone on KNBR did.

Big point to all this is there were 2 outs, not 1, so the victory is by no way guaranteed for the Cards.

The point being, 10 seconds for a game-ending call? They should err on the side of caution, not expediency. This could very well determine whether the Giants make the playoffs or not. Total horseshit call. Hometown favoritism and all that. Duvall HAS to know that the ball was a GRD. You can make the play and then immediately protest.

The Dodgers are going to play it straight. Why wouldn’t they want to keep us out of the playoffs?

    • How to determine playoff tiebreakers

Two teams tie for the second Wild Card spot:

If this happens, a tiebreaker game will be played Monday Oct. 3 and hosted by the team with the better head-to-head record during the regular season. If they split the season series, home-field will be determined by the team with the better intradivision record.

    NATIONAL LEAGUE:

*Cardinals: Would host either the Giants or the Mets in a tiebreaker game. Same reasons as above.

*Mets: They hold the tiebreaker over the Giants. Same reasons as above.

*Giants: They would be the road team in a tiebreaker game. Same reasons as above.

Three teams tie for two Wild Card spots:

This is where it gets confusing, but it’s looking possible in the National League, so let’s use those three teams as an example.

If the Cardinals, Mets and Giants finish with the same record they would receive an A, B or C designation. Think of this almost like a draft, and the team that holds the tiebreaker over the other two gets the “first pick” and can choose the scenario it likes best.

The Cards and Mets both have the season-series edge over the Giants, and the Cards and Mets split their series set, so first choice would go to the club with the better intradivision record, which is the Cardinals as of now, but that could change before the end of the season.

For example, let’s assume that the Cardinals (first pick) and Mets (second pick) both choose the designations that give them two chances to make the Postseason, leaving the Giants with only one chance. The Cardinals and Mets would play in St. Louis on Monday, Oct. 3.

The winner of that game would become the host team in the actual Wild Card Game; the loser would travel to San Francisco for a game on Oct. 4.

The winner of the game in San Francisco would earn the second Wild Card spot, and would be the road team against the winner of Monday’s game in the NL Wild Card Game on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

However, it is possible that the Mets would decide that they prefer to play one home game with a rested pitching staff for a spot in the Wild Card Game. In that case, the Giants would travel to St. Louis for the tiebreaker game on Oct. 3, with the Mets waiting to host the loser on Oct. 4. However, in this scenario the Mets would be forfeiting any chance of hosting the actual NL Wild Card Game, making it less likely.

Three teams tie for one Wild Card:

In a three-team tie, the three teams would choose their A, B and C designations, with Club C traveling to face the winner of the game between Clubs A and B to determine who advances to the Wild Card Game.

I was LMAO when Flav enlightened me to the meaning of “EYB,” and it made me wonder, how does this year’s Even Year Team, stack-up to Even Year Teams of baseball seasons past.

    Here ya go:

    2010 – 94-68
    .257, .321, .408, .729
    R – 697, HR – 162, K – 1099, BB – 487, GDP 158

    ERA/WHIP – 3.36 – 1.271

    2012 – 88-74
    .269, .321, .408, .729
    R – 697, HR – 103, K – 1097, BB – 487, GDP 114

    ERA/WHIP – 4.00 – 1.313

    2014 – 87-75
    .255, .311, .388, .699
    R – 697, HR – 162, K – 1099, BB – 487, GDP 158

    ERA/WHIP – 3.50 – 1.169

    2016 – 87-72
    .257, .328, .396, .724
    R – 696, HR – 128, K – 1084, BB – 487, GDP 120

    ERA/WHIP – 3.70 – 1.223

So, does this mean that this year’s version is bullshit, or horseshit? I mean is that a real pancho, is that a Mexican pancho, or is that a Sears pancho??? Hmmm…No Foolin’…
