Baseball is Back
Giants play their first spring training game today. Larry Krueger on KNBR called this his favorite sports day of the year. That sounds a little over the top to me. But it’s still exciting to see the game we love starting up again.
Heard Phil Nevin and Tyler Beede interviewed this morning. Nevin comes off strong. I am leaning towards support for this change. Although really, could it have been any worse over there last year?
Young Beedah comes off polished, if not strong. Knows all the right things to say. He didn’t free style rap this time because he said the vets told him to tone that shit down. He’s got a new single out that’s not very good called “Top of the World.” You can google it if you’re interested.
During the ‘Beedah interview he said “I put on 30 pounds, developed a curve ball and increased my velocity.” Murph just goes “Hey, that sounds pretty good, pretty good.”
Yes it does…….
30 lb of what? That sounds like a Barry Bonds offseason. Gee, that ain’t a red flag, skippy. Don’t get caught.
The only Giants beat writer who hasn’t blocked me on twitter…..

Hey, a Giants lineup! Crawford SS, Panik 2B, Belt 1B, Pence RF, Morse DH, Parker LF, Gillaspie 3B, Hundley C, Hernandez CF. Bumgarner P.
I see Pence as being the crucial wild card for the Giants. We need a healthy, solid season from him.
Ahh ST opener!
The crack of the bats, hot chicks in the stands, cold beer, a BF custom flat gnarly polish dog, 4 finger walk to 1st batter except the batter flips the main finger cause he wants to hit and the ump ejects his ass!Gotta love ST!!!!
SO ready for some ball! I have meetings from noon till 2…gonna bail after my last meeting and catch as much of the game as possible.
PLAY BALL!
A very small piece of A. Bart Giamatti’s “Green Field of the Mind” as it applies to today…
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings…
Looking forward to that summertime blossoming…taking in some games, cold beers, brat, oh yeah…BRING IT ON…
Re: the bad base running story from yesterday. Hey, it’s probably good they’ve brought in Vince Coleman to help instruct guys in baserunning, it shows Giants are open to bringing guys in with no Giants background at all, to help. But, if you look at this clearly, WTF is this? If the base running was so bad last year, and it was, since we all commented on it during the year, what did Bochy and the org do then? Nothing? Wait until season over to fire two coaches? Bringing in Coleman from the outside is either window dressing, or means they don’t think base running has been taught well in the Giants organization. Either way is a little disturbing, if you ask me…
It’s disturbing enough that a major league baseball player has to be taught base running…
Pence hit an RBI double off the wall. Just take him out now until opening day.
Walk off homer!!!
By someone we’ve never heard of. 🙂
Yeah, a 28 year old career minor leaguer with a couple cups of coffee in the bigs, hits a walk off bomb in the first game of the spring. Gotta love spring training!
One of the amusing things about Spring Training is that when a starter in a game is taken out, he can head to the clubhouse and leave the ballpark before the game is over.
Didn’t Bonds do that in the regular season?…
Hey I put on 30 pounds…suit me the fuck up!!!
Eye opening stuff to me in the Chron column I read about Giants baserunning: according to B/R the Giants made 57outs on the bases (not counting caught stealing) tied for 4th most in NL..
Further quote: FG formula ranked Giants 5th worst in league and one of 7 teams whose baserunning hurt them more than helped them.
Doubt Coleman is gonna help much, but definitely something to bring up. Also in the column Belt was told to chill on bases last year, so mgmt. got tired of watching him get thrown out and caught stealing.
As Loo said, these are mlers and it shouldn’t be happening.
Canning Roberto Kelly shouldn’t hurt. That is definitely addition by subtraction.
Amen.
Seems at one time the Giants liked Kelly’s base-running approach:

And being fast and a great base stealer doesn’t necessarily make you a great base runner…
I dig Krueger’s comment about this being the best sports day of the year. When I was a kid, that certainly was the truth.
Today, I would rank baseball opening day which usually coincides with the NCAA Basketball Championship as the single best sports day of the year. I would probably put the first Saturday of college football combined with a Giants pennant race game in early September as number two. Third place would be the first two days (Thursday and Friday) of the NCAA basketball tourney. The Super Bowl is a distant fourth.
Wynton Bernard.
Jesus, Snarkk. Reading that article, 2008 seems like the stone age.
Ort-rod!
“Incumbent third-base coach Tim Flannery is a walking windmill, and Kelly, a big-league coach for the first time, at 43, also likes to push, push, push.”
