A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

No Reason

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 24, 2017

I can’t come up with a single reason to be optimistic about this upcoming home series vs the Dodgers except for the “no reason” angle. Before we went to KC I thought it was entirely possibly we go 1-8. Even after we squeaked out the first one in extras I thought it was still possible that 1-8 ignominiously unfolded.

But there is always “no reason” to pin your hopes to. Things happen for no reason all the time. It’s one of the main reasons that sports books stay in business. If everything worked out as it appeared on paper, they’d go broke.

So let’s here it for NO REASON! Come on baby! We believe in you!!!!!

That’s all I have right now.

FU – remember during ST when I said the Giants would win 92, and the NL West Division? I believe I must have been drunk off my ass or smoking some really good shit (or both)!

With the injuries and the shitty ball this team is playing right now, it is hard to be optimistic (and I am probably one of the more optimistic here).

The good. I had a ton of shit to do this weekend, and missed almost all of the Rox series.

I can clearly remember watching Mark Davis wipe out LA at the Stick in one of his first starts.
Maybe Blach does the same and Moore regains form.

Saw him a couple times, and never was a big fan, but every time the Giants play there, I think of this (and it rocks pretty good) . . .

  6. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:29 am

I think Zum mentioned this yesterday but Arroyo had 4 hits and won the game with a no doubt rocket off the wall. Stubbs led off and played CF and Morse got 4 ABs and a double.
I’d imagine Morse and Stubbs replace Marrero and Hernandez very soon, and someone else takes HIll’s spot. Hwang had 2 hits and is at .285. At some point SF needs to bring him up or let him go (end of June I think). Not sure how he fits in to their ultimate plans but I’d like to see him get a real shot at ml pitching/ml yards.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:45 am

The thing I heard the other day, which absolutely floored me, was they were waiting to bring Arroyo up until he went into a slump and then got out of it to see how he reacts to going in to a slump in the first place.

There’s taking the long view, and then there’s taking the stupid view.

Hmmm…I saw an interview with Evans where he was asked the question about Arroyo coming up, and that was not a part of the reasoning. This was on CSNBA (or whatever the fuck it is called now)…may be out there for viewing. Will see if I can find it…

If true, that’s one of the more stoopid things I’ve heard in a while. Maybe we give these guys in the FO too much credit. Just bring his ass up and let him play…

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on April 24, 2017 at 10:01 am

That’s got to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. I can only hope that the Giants are NOT feeling that way.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:48 am

It is absolutely baffling the Hwang signing. If they signed him, leave him in AAA, and then let him go in June, what was the fucking point?

If Nooner is holding him back, dump Nooner. He hasn’t done enough to warrant sticking with him. I’m not married to any of these guys short of Craw and Panik on the infield. Letting Belt play OF is all well and good (and pathetic when you think about it) but put ANYONE out there from the farm.

Arroyo would be a good add, maybe Okert could start too. The boys should be adequately humbled by their really cruddy play to use that as a jumping off place.
I’ll be watching, just like everyday.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 24, 2017 at 9:53 am

Blach will get most of the starts until he proves he cannot fit the bill. I think the rope will be pretty long given how this team is scuffling. Okert is a valuable late-inning guy…don’t see him getting an starts, plus he has always been a reliever in pro ball.

I was catching-up on some of the past threads and found the comment (from Pawlie) about teams starting the season losing 12 of 18 NEVER making the playoffs in the WC era.

Time to make it a first. Yes, things look dismal now, but I am with the Clown (comment from last thread) that with a few tweaks, I think this team can make the playoffs (John said could be a championship season). I say let’s punch a ticket to the dance and see WTF happens.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 24, 2017 at 10:02 am

I agree with you Chi, with one condition – No later than the end of this month, they begin a “conga line” of minor league players (Hwang, Slater, Arroyo, Morse, Williamson, and/or fill in the ______ ).

Keep “throwing shit against the wall until it sticks.” Just my opinion, but no more and no less than 150 at bats for each of these potential saviors. Don’t do the aforementioned, game over . . . Kiss the season good bye. It will be too late to wait for the All Star break and/or trade deadline.

Here’s hoping this little blast from the past keeps Cainer on the straight and narrow:

    0905_Giants_M's_2_043

Giants @ Mariners, Saturday May 23rd, 2009 in Seattle. The Giants won 5-1, as Matt Cain went the distance and looked good doing it. Cain’s line: 9 IP, 10 hits, 0 ER, 0 BB and 7 K’s. Juan Uribe of the Giants hit a 2 out bases clearing double in the 8th inning, and Fred Lewis followed that up with a 2 run homer to straightaway right field. Both hits came off of Mark Lowe of the M’s.

DFS . . . Definitely not confident, but I have a platoon stack going tonight with Pence, Posey and Nunez. I think they will be significantly under owned in fantasy this evening.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on April 24, 2017 at 11:01 am

Probably not a bad call, Blade. I don’t think Nunez has faced Ryu, but in 22 ABs against him, Pence has hit him really well (.455), Posey has done OK (.273) and has a HR against him. I would imagine that Hill will get a start tonight, in 16 ABs he’s hitting .438 with a HR against Ryu.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 24, 2017 at 11:14 am

Nooner is inexpensive when compared to what’s available at 3rd base this evening. He also has the platoon advantage against Ryu (which is why I have Pence and possibly Posey going tonight). Nunez is a good choice in fantasy because stolen bases are big points and Ryu’s best pitch is a slow change up.

Could not find the video with Evans where he was discussing Arroyo, but here is an article where he basically says the same thing he said in the video I was referencing.

    http://www.knbr.com/2017/04/20/bobby-evans-offers-rationale-on-why-christian-arroyo-is-still-in-the-minors/

Don’t hold your breath on seeing Arroyo anytime soon, boys and girls…

He did say that if Arroyo comes up, it would only be with a position change by Nunie (to LF), and he said something to the effect that this isn’t even being considered right now…

Well, they have to do SOMETHING soon, because this team is stinking up the joint…

  16. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on April 24, 2017 at 11:22 am

I’m OK If Span goes on the DL and they bring up Stubbs to replace him, but the guy I’d like to see replace Hernandez right now, this very second, is Slade Heathcott. He is in AA for us right now but when the Yankees brought him up for a cup of coffee in 2015 he had 10 hits in 25 ABs, 2 of them Jacks. Compare that to Gorkys’ 48 Hits in 252 ML ABs. Slade can play CF and the corners. Truly only a temp solution because he’d probably blow out a knee in a month or 2 anyway But hey, give Heathcott a shot…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 24, 2017 at 11:33 am

  23. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 24, 2017 at 12:29 pm

I decided to fade all Giants hitters this evening in DFS. Too many other better options.

Cain was a nice feel good story for a couple of starts. Tonight, I think the “feel good” emotions end. Bums have one of the best offenses against right handed pitching. Actually, with the current Cain, he’s the shits against both left or right-handed hitters. I just read that he has a higher wOBA to lefties (.390) and a higher hard contact rate to righties (35.4%), e.g., Justin Turner will potentially destroy him with a reverse-splits .388 wOBA against right handed pitchers. OH OH. At least tonight, I think the pain continues for the Giants.

Congratulations Pawlie for the royalty payment!

Sorry but a hell no to Puig. He’s always been an arrogant a-hole and I don’t see leopard changing his spots.

And let’s face it, Bum hates Puig, it would ruin the club house chemistry!!

    Puig has himself an arm.

Puig has been an abject failure when you consider the hype and talent he had starting out a few years ago. Add in the fact that he has been a complete cancer to the clubhouse and he is a 100% NO for me.

    Fuck yeah…nice play by Arroyo!

  60. pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:17 pm

Here’s what I already love about Arroyo: he’s loose, having FUN, confident, not scared. His teammates already seem to love him. Bailed out Cain. did I say he’s having fun? It’s infectious. Speaking of chemistry, he just added to it.

Absolutely agree. The team needed a spark, they weren’t getting it from anyone else….

Romo says he’s *stoked* to be coming back to China Basin. His first appearance in a game will be interesting.

    • pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:22 pm

The story on him made me rethink his signing. He grew up a Dodgers fan; you can tell he has lots of friends on the SF side. He respects and admires what the Giants meant to him — and vice versa.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:53 pm

I saw a short interview on the pre-game.’I sure like that kid. He was money in 2012!

Yeah Romo got a nice deserved ovation from the fans. He will get another one if he hangs a frisbee pitch..

I know I’m an outlier, but I like Utley less than Puig. I’m not naive about Puig’s antics. I’m just saying he’d come around; he’d surprise. It ain’t gonna happen, so it’s idle speculation. Utley? Not a fan. Great player in his time, but . . . .

People change. We both know that on a personal level. I’m always open to giving anyone another chance at redemption. Again, down with what you said (albeit, it’s not going to happen). Good post.

Why the hell did Sleep Train change their name to Mattress Firm? Seemed like Sleep Train was a super well established brand name. I don’t get that one.

They must have gotten bought by Mattress Firm. There is one on every corner in Houston. They make Starbucks look like a mom and pop.

  68. pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:32 pm

Cain just looks like the old Cain, meaning the one who can pitch. He’s got some of that redneck swagger back. Couldn’t have come at a better time. (I know, I know; it’s only the 5th freakin inning.)

  69. PaulinAsia Banh Bao's avatar PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:42 pm

Well, the team has lost its #1 starting pitcher, so the #5 (and former #1) stepping up would just be huge. Possibly Cain had some mental blocks that crept in after all his injuries and non-performance, and this year, his last year, could have given him a more relaxed mindset, kind of just saying fuck-it and going out and throwing with nothing to lose.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:45 pm

Very surprised by his performance. As Chi said, I would love to be proved wrong about him. A resurgent Cain would really help this team.

  70. PaulinAsia Banh Bao's avatar PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:43 pm

And 6th and 7th innings have not been familiar territory for him lately. He gets through these… then maybe his so-far good performance isn’t fluky anymore….

  72. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:51 pm

Why not Nunie drop a bunt for a hit to get Belt over to 2nd in front of Buster? Instead, fastest guy on the team shoots a worthless, unproductive fly to LF…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:54 pm

Even if Nunie got out with a bunt, he’d have moved Belt to 2nd, and Belt scores on that single by Posey. I am tired of this no-risk, no-creativity managing by Bochy…

  73. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:51 pm

Throw out his 1st start and Cain’s easily has been their best starter.Though Bum’s the new Cain in run support which hurt him along with his dirt bike 🚴

  74. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 24, 2017 at 8:54 pm

I think it was a year ago, maybe 2015, when Cards just embarrassed Puig. there was highlight reel of them striking him out over and over in playoffs. I just think league adjusted to him and he hasn’t figured out how to get back anywhere near where he was. He’s a super athlete but just an average hitter.
His own teammates, like AGon, have been exasperated with him. His own mgr. demoted him last year and Mattingly made fun of him bailing out and claiming various injuries. Too many red flags.

There are a few Dodgers I wish the Giants had but he ain’t one of them.
