A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Beating Kershaw

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 2, 2017

I give Krukow a lot of sh!t, I should probably give him credit, too. On his morning show yesterday he was blathering away about the calendar changing and what a great impact that COULD have on the team. Murph was nearly laughing at him but Kruk stayed with it and kept talking about the team’s fragile psyche and that if the Giants could just beat Kershaw it could change everything. For a second I thought I was listening to a Marty Lurie caller. Beat Kershaw. Harump!

And then they went out and beat Kershaw……

There have been so many great things about this blog over the years. I’m not going to make a list, you guys know what they are. Sometimes though, it’s just for the laughs. And when your team stinks or maybe you’re just in a rut in your own life, it’s good to just laugh. This made me laugh:

So Arroyo’s new nickname is Dough Boy and he looks like Pete Rose but only if an elevator landed on him. Got it.

And this season, for many reasons, just got a little easier on the eyes…….

Love the Dough Boy comment! LMOA…

I bailed on the game at 4-2. I have a three fucking hour meeting that starts at 7 this morning, and I needed some shut-eye.

Got a text during the 7th from a friend about tight grinder games with the bums…the way it should be he says.

So, I was tempted as hell to get up and watch the rest of the game, but said fuck it…we’ll see how it shakes out in the morning.

Bombs by Pence and Posey, and the game-winning knock by the Dough Boy, all off Opie. Saweeet!

I need to reach out to my friend here at work who was crowing about a bet (bums sweeping) and see if he still wants that bet. 😉

    Beat the Fucking Bums!

No one beats this group for nicknames, musicology, arcane recipes (Twinfan, anyone?), and American judicial reform combined with nutritional wellness.

I can’t get too excited about this team until a) they win a few or three series in a row or b) get over .500 . . . but, yes, we can laugh.

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 2, 2017 at 7:02 am

If they can win this series it might get the juices flowing.

  4. gianthead said, on May 2, 2017 at 7:08 am

I still have not seen Arroyo in a Giants uni yet at bat:(

Was shocked to see the lead last night over Opie Ass before falling into deep unconscious slumber…

We understand. It’s tough draining that swamp.

Who the fuck knew that being President, and leader of the free world was so hard?! Obviously not Orange Cheeto… 😉

  5. snarkk said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:52 am

Without a home run or two, it’s very hard for this team to win…

  6. willedav said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:54 am

fwiw, Austin Slater started in CF for Sac last night. Hitting .291 but OPS down about 100 points from last year as he only has 1 bomb so far compared to 13 in 250 ABs end of last year. Does bat RH.
Hwang 3b last night 2 for 5 hitting .318…what would you do with him?

    • dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:57 am

I was just looking at those numbers too. It’s going to be hard to keep The Donger down.

      • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:02 am

where would you play him? If Arroyo is at 3rd there really isn’t another spot for The Donger

      • zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:04 am

“It’s going to be hard to keep The Donger down.”

        So to speak. 🙂

  7. zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:06 am

I was kind of mystified why Melancon wasn’t brought in for the ninth; but hey, it worked out, so I’m not complaining. I guess Bochy just felt that Melancon’s arm needed last night off.

    • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:13 am

he had worked like 6 of 8 days or something like that (kuip comment, don’t hold me to that)

  8. unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:14 am

I think it was more for Melancon’s head rather than arm. It’s not like he’s had a lot of save opportunities anyway.

Is the Donger a long-term viability? This is what we need to know. Because this is why lots of us are talking breaking up the infield. If Donger can hold down 3rd, then we can move the Kid to SS and trade Crawfish for a bona fide OFer.

I ain’t fully behind this, mainly because who really knows how good Hwang is, but i certainly see the reasoning. All of our stud Giants and farm guys are infielders.

    • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:21 am

Giants won’t ever trade Posey or Crawford. One is untradeable the other untouchable (Sabean loves home grown infielders and Craw is as home grown as it gets)

    • chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 10:27 am

Agree – Crawford is not going anywhere. They seem to like Arroyo at 3rd (and I do, too). I have said it before, and will say it again, I would not fuck with our middle IF. Solid D is so important to this team.

I think it is June or July by which Donger has to get the call, or he can go sign with another team.

  9. snarkk said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:26 am

I don’t understand the fascination with only IFers development over OFers. That Shaw kid I think came in as a first baseman, now I’m seeing he’s been pushed into trying to be an OFer…

    • chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 10:30 am

Yep…Shaw has played six games in LF for Richmond. His fielding percentage in the OF is actually better than his numbers at 1B.

  10. zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:28 am

Baseball is such a game of fractions of inches. Turner was right on an Okert fastball, but just barely missed the sweet spot, and flied out to deep centerfield.

  11. snarkk said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:40 am

Too early in my book for a nickname for Arroyo. He’s only 21, the longer he plays, his habits or exploits may help define an appropos nickname that lasts as he ages. Meanwhile, when he hits the ball square, he rocks it. I like it. He needs to stay up all season, likely won’t go back down ever. Contrary to Matt Williams, he seems to be able to hit pretty much all pitch types, so I don’t see him needing to go back down to learn how to hit a curve…

  12. dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:54 am

If The Donger is gonna be an option the club should be rolling him out in LF every day. The idea that playing LF is some big mystery is ridiculous. If Morse can tromp around out there then The Donger can handle it. Regardless, I think they’re really just waiting on Williamson.

    • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 9:59 am

seriously, WTF is going on with Williamson? Did he lose a limb or something? He had a pulled quad muscle going on 2 months ago…..

    • snarkk said, on May 2, 2017 at 10:25 am

Totally agree dirt. Playing LF is not brain surgery. See ball, run to ball, catch ball, throw ball to infielder or run to dugout. Done….

    • chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 10:31 am

My patience is wearing thin for Mac. He seems to be hurt all the damned time.

  13. wilcojoe said, on May 2, 2017 at 10:34 am

The last post of the night by Blade is sad but true. They would never trade the “faces of the franchise” until it’s too late. I will say it until I am blue in the face. Prior to his dirt bike accident, trading Bum at midseason would have been the balsiest and smartest move since Sabean traded Matt Williams for Jeff Kent and others (including Julian Tavarez).

Can you imagine the package of studs Bum would bring in return? His parltry salary and club control for two more years is the real sweetener here. People keep saying how young Bum is but the dude had 7 full major league seasons worth of wear and tear on that golden arm of his. I don’t care how country strong he is, that’s a lot of innings.

I saw first hand the Astros wait far too long to trade their “faces of the franchise” in Berkman and Oswalt. They paid the price in the form of six years of absolute sucktitude. The Giants may have the financial resources to buy themselves a new roster, but if they can’t buy themselves ONE freaking Outfielder, I don’t see that as a viable option. The Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers have all traded away “franchise” type players in an effort to rebuild. Sadly I don’t see the Giants doing that anytime soon.

    • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 11:14 am

I agree to a point. It would have been ballsy beyond belief and they would have gotten a king’s ransom. The problem is, I really don’t think there is a package worth Bum that another team could put together. He’s sucha perfect trade chip it’s almost too perfect. The contract is nearly worth as much as his production. That’s unheard of. What is he worth? 5 blue chips? And who would pay that?

    • chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 11:31 am

I can see this to some degree, but lean more with Craig. People talk all the time about the wear-and-tear on arms, and I don’t get it, because you have guys in the past like Ryan who pitched effectively for a very long time while also throwing lots of innings/year.

  14. unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 10:41 am

Melancon had pitched 5 innings since the 24th. I guess a rest was in order. As far as Mac goes, what is he supposed to do? He can’t call himself up. He’s been in AAA a couple weeks now.

Mac is batting .185 with 1 hr and 5 rbis. All in one game. That might have something to do with it.

Hey they discovered the anchor from Christopher Columbus ship 🚢
No word yet if any struggling SF Giants were attached to it…

  16. dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 2, 2017 at 11:22 am

The only players I see getting traded are Belt, Samardzija and maybe Cueto (personally, I’d like to see Cueto stay for the duration of his contract). Would Belt get a blue chip plus minor leaguers?

    • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:01 pm

I think Belt would get a couple good prospects. No top prospect.

    • zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 11:58 am

      Ha! Excellent!

    • willedav said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:03 pm

      yeah, that is pretty funny.
Lot of funny stuff too around Opie’s cringe when Posey took him deep.
One of the tweets on cbs game tracker shortly thereafter said something about him practicing Rowand’s batting stance.

very good. The guy’s nonchalant demeanor’s just right.

There is precedent. The first two Ring Hats showed up in seats close to the front of the bums’ lower deck, in 2013, I think. I remember the game. dodger staff finally made the couple take the hats off. I’m not a big fan of the ring hats generally, but the first sighting in chavez latrine was funny.

      • Lurker John said, on May 2, 2017 at 5:10 pm

I’d have told them to go fuck themselves. They can’t make you take off a hat. The only people it’s offensive to is Dodger fans. Tough shit.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 1:42 pm

Had to share that on my FB page. Too funny. Beats fricking Marlins Man by a country mile.

    • Lurker John said, on May 2, 2017 at 5:08 pm

That’s fucking awesome and brilliant. The smirk on the guy’s face is priceless.

  17. zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:07 pm

Hopefully the 2017 Giants fully get their act together and make the playoffs; but if not, knowing that, at least, the Dodgers or Cubs won’t make it either is a nice feeling.
I am SO tired of the media overkill on the Cubs. They were a nice story, and the media just keeps cranking out some kind of false Cub-mania. A whole lot of people in the U.S. don’t care about Bryant, Rizzo, Schwarber, Ross, and the others. It needs to end. The Sunday Night game on ESPN was ridiculous. Non-stop stories about Bryant’s father, and Ross on Dancing With The Stars, and on and on. You have to turn the sound down on the TV.
They act like Bryant is some kind of heartwarming story. Yeah, the plucky little kid whose dad played pro ball, and coaches a nationally famous travel squad, where his son got to be teammates with Bryce Harper and a bunch of other privileged white kids.

    • Lurker John said, on May 2, 2017 at 5:13 pm

Thank you, zumiee, I’m surprised it hasn’t been raised more frequently here. The ESPN broadcaster crew’s constant fawning (I’m choosing to use nice language here) over the Cubs is pathetic and very annoying. You’re spot on about the Sunday night game. It was so bad I turned it off.

  18. Irish Kevin said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:07 pm

So why not Package Nunez and Williamson for an OFer

    • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:13 pm

Because neither of those 2 are coveted by others

    • willedav said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:21 pm

call Marty Lurie and see who he thinks you could get for those 2.
This is just Giants dilemma, guys who would bring back someone who’d help right away not going to get dealt off.

  19. zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:11 pm

This line killed me on the Sunday Night broadcast:
“As good as a player as he is on the field, Bryant is an even better person off the field.”
Well, you know what? Cubs fans wouldn’t give a CRAP about his behavior off the field if he wasn’t a good player ON the field. He’s nothing to nobody in Cubland without his performance on the field.

  20. willedav said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:12 pm

Every day I take a look at box scores for CFs around the league. ain’t pretty:

keon Broxton of brewers batting .194
Billy Hamilton of Reds at .222 after 2 for 5 night with 3 steals…worth looking into?
    Cutch at .247
    Fowler at .224 and expensive
    Kiermaier of Rays at .208
    Granderson .124 Lagares .167
    Inciarte of Braves at .240
    Gomez of Rangers .235
    Springer of Stros .239
Lorenzo Cain (might be a trade target) .265

Most other guys probably too good or untouchable kids like O Herrera of Phils,

    • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:15 pm

      I’d love to get Hamilton.

      • pawliekokonuts said, on May 2, 2017 at 2:04 pm

        Josh Hamilton is available.

    • Lurker John said, on May 2, 2017 at 5:17 pm

You’d kill a couple of birds with one stone by acquiring Cain, speed and GG defense, not to mention I think his hitting style would fit AT&T pretty well. That dude patrolling Triples Alley would be prodigious.

  21. zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:14 pm

By the way, I’m a better person off the field, than I am on the baseball field, too. Bryant and I have that in common. 🙂

    • unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 1:44 pm

Well, I’m a better person out of the stands than I am IN the stands . . .

  22. unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:18 pm

Crawford’s about the only guy that will bring something meaningful in a trade. His home run totals would shoot up drastically in a normal yard.

That being said, no one is going anywhere. We will tread water till the trade deadline and go fishing for McCutcheon. The Pirates are floundering a little as well, but we’ll have to see where they stand at the deadline.

JD Martinez still hasn’t played yet with his foot injury. Deetroit is another team that may or may not go yard-sale at the deadline.

  23. willedav said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:32 pm

Zum I hear you on Cubs, can’t stand all the hype on these guys. Lot of Cubs fans now sport gear who previously would have kept it well hidden.

During the game the Mendoza gal did a segment they had taped with Addison Russell—-zero talk about baseball, only his dance moves. Wtf?
Pls. he hit .238 last year and is at .258 this year, and his OPS+ numbers are in Span territory, under 100. He did have 21 bombs playing in that bandbox yard and others (Cincy Mil etc) in rest of division.
    Overhyped, overrated.

    • Lurker John said, on May 2, 2017 at 5:25 pm

That whole in-game segment they do really pisses me off. I tune in to watch a damn baseball game. Russell’s, in particular, was really annoying. Pokemon? Really?

  24. willedav said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:42 pm

mmm, Hamilton does bring speed to the game, just hasn’t ever hit much in his 3 full years.
1500 ABs career BA of .246 with .296 OB.
Not sure if he’d be part of solution to Giants OF woes or part of the problem with those numbers.
Really hope Giants have better option than running Gorkys and Stubbs out there tho and soon.

    • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 12:51 pm

Well they don’t have a better option, that’s the problem. And guys better than Hamilton will cost a lot more. Shit, he’s the NL SB leader every year he’d probably cost a lot too. Plus he covers unreal ground out in CF.

      • willedav said, on May 2, 2017 at 1:15 pm

well, I put more value on how well he hits than the steals. without the one, the other doesn’t do much for me if he’s walking back to the dugout.
just my take I understand leadoff is different for you.
and you’re obviously right about him being an improvement over the other two and cheap too.

  25. pawliekokonuts said, on May 2, 2017 at 2:05 pm

I’m a better person playing the field too. Except during one of my marriages.

  29. blade3colorado said, on May 2, 2017 at 3:10 pm

Regarding Willie’s center fielder post – George Springer is someone I would target. However, good luck getting him. He’s that good (pipe in Wilco). Don’t be fooled by his mediocre batting average or his low OBP this season. In 4 years, he’s usually at around .270 BA, .814 OPS, and a .353 OBP. Ender Inciarte is another one that has started off slow, but I would take him in a heart beat, he has career averages of .288 BA and 334 OBP. Again, he might be difficult to obtain, since Atlanta gave him a long term contract commitment last season.

All of this shit is speculation. What GH specializes in (which is admittedly fun to do). No way we get anyone who is good, unless we’re willing to give someone up too.

  30. zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 3:11 pm

Stratton got a lot of chances because he was a first round draft pick several years ago. Looks to be a bust. His stuff was terrible the other night. Mediocre fastballs and mediocre curveballs that got crushed.

    • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 4:01 pm

there wasn’t really anyone they missed on in that first round unless you are bummed they didn’t draft Stephen Piscotty. A good Stanford man, powerful outfielder. Uh, nevermind, we don’t draft those. 🙂

Off topic. Disgusting what Red Sox fans did to Adam Jones last night. Fast forward tonight, the fans gave him a standing ovation (where Chris Sale said it was important he step off the mound when Adam Jones came to the plate for his first at-bat because, to him, the Orioles CF deserved that respect).

Almost forgot, the entire Red Sox franchise and the city mayor also apologized to Jones after yesterday’s incident,

  47. James said, on May 2, 2017 at 7:55 pm

Just in case you become too obsessed with how badly the offense sucks …

    • chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 7:58 pm

And the bullpen, and Moore, and WTF, Bobby Evans, too. On THREE, everybody suck!

  48. Lurker John said, on May 2, 2017 at 7:55 pm

Isaiah Thomas 51 pts and counting in OT.

  51. Lurker John said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:01 pm

26 pitches and 5 runs in before the first out is recorded.

  52. blade3colorado said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:01 pm

I almost got stupid in DFS and added Moore to one of my LUs.

    • wilcojoe said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:04 pm

Unfortunately I made that mistake. Ever since I won $500 in a $3 tournament a few weeks back, I have been in an epic slump.

      • blade3colorado said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:08 pm

Whoa! I haven’t been on here until recently Joe. Big props for taking down a tournament! Congratulations dude. I have been nibbling in tourneys, but FD and DK wont allow me to play when I’m in another country (some law I think) and it has affected my enthusiasm tremendously. Again, way to go!

      • wilcojoe said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:23 pm

Thanks Steve. It was an exciting day, watching it go down.

  53. alleykat69 said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:03 pm

    Wtf is Bochy waiting for?
His bottle of red to be opened?
    Fuck Moore is toast!!

  54. zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:03 pm

Justin Turner turned into Barry Bonds. Nothing suspicious about that.

  55. Lurker John said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:06 pm

Well, that’s a nice shutdown inning by Moore there.

  56. alleykat69 said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:10 pm

Does anyone really go into a bar are grocery store and buy michalob ultra light??

    • Lurker John said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:13 pm

    • djloo27 said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:14 pm

I’m seeing a lot of Modelo around lately.
      What’s up with that?

      • Lurker John said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:16 pm

    • wilcojoe said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:26 pm

Yeah, Modelo with a little lime on a hot day is good drinking.

  58. chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:20 pm

Arroyo flashing the leather again! Kid can play some ball!

  59. blade3colorado said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:21 pm

Doughboy? After that outstanding play, I’m with Pawlie – kid is anything but a “doughboy.”

    • chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:32 pm

  61. djloo27 said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:28 pm

I’ve never read or heard a single comment about the affect of PEDS on a players fielding…

    • unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:34 pm

Well, it helps your arm. It helps your speed as well.

  62. chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:32 pm

If Moore gives up another fucking run this inning…Bochum needs to pull his ass pronto!

  63. unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:33 pm

Yeah, Modelo was hard to come by even in Nor Cal. When we traveled to LA all the time I’d get some.

WTF? Eenie meenie miney moore. It’s god/bad/good/bad/ good/todaybad.

  64. chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:34 pm

Fucking Chavez Latrine fans and their damned beach balls. Someone needs to shove those beach balls where the sun doesn’t shine…

    • unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:35 pm

The opposing team should get a run every time a beach ball hits the field.

  65. zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:37 pm

What this game needs is Gearrin to come in and take 30 seconds between pitches.

  66. blade3colorado said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:38 pm

I have the LA feed and Orel Hershiser must have gone to the Jeremy Affeldt school of broadcasting. Dude is insufferable and has diarrhea of the mouth. Doesn’t really say shit, just drones on and on.

    • chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:40 pm

I have heard him provide color for LLWS games. Just fucking shoot me. Affeldt is horrible, too. Hey Jeremy – just shut the fuck up!

  67. chipower9 said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:39 pm

Dammit Moore! Hope the bullpen can do it’s fricking job tonight!

  68. blade3colorado said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:39 pm

Pfffttt! Moore with another sterling effort of 4 innings.

  69. unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:42 pm

Oh boy. And Gerrin hits the first guy he faces???

    • blade3colorado said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:44 pm

Hits him in the meaty portion of the ass . . . Didn’t even make it worth it.

  70. James said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:42 pm

If we traded Moore back for Duffy, we could have additional security at 3rd.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:44 pm

Gawd. I’m sick of the Duffy talk. Get the Donger up here.

      • James said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:45 pm

        That was a joke, Chuck.

  71. zumiee said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:42 pm

It’s going to be really hard to get to .500.

  72. unca_chuck said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:43 pm

Fuck. We gonna need at least a couple field goals.

Looks like the Dubs are more better watching.

WTF? He dropped it? Fuck. Throw to 3rd! Woulda been a DP!

  73. Macdog said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:44 pm

Flav on Feb. 19: “I guarantee you Gutierrez is going to hit some important HR’s vs lefties in 2017, and some of them will probably come against us.”

    • Flavor said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:51 pm

nice find. Unfortunately this one might not fall into the important category. What a shit show. I’m watching the Warriors so I missed all of this mess.

  74. Macdog said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:46 pm

    • blade3colorado said, on May 2, 2017 at 8:47 pm
