Another Freebie for LA?
Unfortunately, this looks like an easy one for LA again. I know, I know, I’m running out of games to keep saying that. But the Cubs are pretty beat down after a tough series with Washington and then a cross country trip that went sideways and didn’t see them get into LA till yesterday mid day. Yes they have time to rest but the schedule has been disrupted, their pitching staff is pretty burnt up and this just isn’t setting up for momentum going into Game 1. Plus, Kershaw is rested. He gets a lot of shit for his post season failures but he’s never come into a start with this much rest. He will likely dominate tonight. Irritating, I know…..
copycat super70’s account but this is good
It just seems like the Dodgers are catching every break this season. They’ve played well, but the breaks are also going their way.
I forgot about the Chex cereals; I like those, too.
i just ate a banana and shoved two large handfuls of blueberries into my mouth. I’m like a Koala bear in the wild. I don’t think I’ve had a bowl of cereal since I was 14
I think Duke Ellington said something about always having good breakfast, because you don’t know when you will have another opportunity to enjoy a meal.
Giants got Alvin O kinda late in his career and like others he put up worst numbers at the Stick—.298 without a single bomb in ’84, not a good year to be a Giants fan.
If anyone hasn’t seen the amazing TD by the Cal QB last night, here it is:
thx Mac, that was f-ing great
Hadn’t seen it yet—so thank you. Now, go add some milk to your cereal, you freak.
Johnny Unitas did that like every other game…
It’s unwatchable but this is Roberts shot at payback for the beat down LA took last year to eventual World Champs. They were up 2-1 and lost 3 straight, getting shut out 5-0 game 6 clincher with Opie going down again.
No question he’s got a good enough team and Cubs don’t seem near as dominant as a year ago. So now that he has one under his belt can he negotiate managing in the playoffs vs. old fart with a ring?
Lose and no one is going to give an F how many times you’ve won the division or how many games you won in regular season.
Dodgers are gonna blow ’em out and I’m all for it…
Strongly agree with first part of your statement, strongly oppose the second.
Tracks tomorrow night Loo? When we were on our Yankee Stadium to G n R at Met Life Stadium one day odyssey I almost made Map Dawg stand in the corridor while I went into Tracks for 5 minutes to have a quick pop to get a taste of the place. Probably would have done it, but I didn’t think we had 5 minutes to spare.
I will get there one day…
It’s my favorite bar for drinking, but with a few small TV screens, it’s not where you want to watch a game that you care about. I’ll probably wind up on 8th Avenue somewhere…
It’s also got a back exit when the inevitable Penn Station rush hour terrorist attack happens.
Life in 2017…
Is it silly to think that the Dodgers winning it all could light a fire under Giant management?
I think that’s silly. If it were true, what would they do? Spend more money? They already spend a ton. Fix the ballpark? I wish. Trade guys who are untradable? Not happening. We’re stuck.
If Giant management doesn’t care what the Dodgers do, then the rivalry is mostly dead…
.
i think it might push them in the direction of a panic free agent signing if everything fell into place.
Lorenzo Cain mayhaps?
i like Cain but feel he’d be a “rich man’s Span”. We need more.
Throw out some names then. I’m not seeing many guys out there who are a good fit.
Todd Frazier?
i said “in the direction of a panic free agent signing”…to me, this would happen around middle of December when Sabes likes to do most of his damage. It could easily be Cain. But a more “Giant” like signing would be Moustakas– and that would be a huge mistake.
I’m just think about who they might sign in a panic, not who I would sign
Anyone out there you would go after? I agree Moose is a big miss unless the park is fixed.
They probably already know Carlos Gomez’ uniform size…
Could’ve crippled them by overpaying Jansen & Turner. They probably never even considered it…
I bet Jansen and Turner never even considered it. Or is that what you meant?
I meant the Giants never considered it.
Players will always go to the highest bidder…
That’s what I figured you meant, but LA is a damn nice place to live if you’re rich, you’re on a team that is loaded with talent and has a no-shit unlimited budget. No way were either of those guys coming to SF.
the epic collapse begins…..
I am embarrassed to admit I like Grape Nuts. Even better is grape nuts mixed into Yoplait Cherry yogurt. That’s good eating right there.
I actually like them too, but in small doses. Maybe one or two boxes a year.
I eat a pretty insane amount of cereal and can end up with a bowl in front me damn near anytime I’m awake.
Now we’re getting somewhere!
in honor of you cereal eaters….
Carlos Gomez in orange and black is not hard to picture. Great call. I’m sick and a little loopy on cold meds right now, but I think I’d be down with signing him as a stopgap until we can develop an outfielder or two. (Stifle your laughter plz)
Basically, Angel Pagan with a bit more power. Athletic, mercurial, injury-prone—-the whole package.
I’m tired of watching the same shit show. And it couldn’t get any worse. Gomez on a 2 year deal is fine.
I don’t like yogurt or milk. I think that’s why I’m off cereal. The only way I’ve been able to tolerate blueberries is to stand at the sink in the morning and shove a couple of huge handfuls into my mouth. Takes about 45 seconds. It’s quite a sight. Then I’m off to work.
Are you one of those “nothing but fruit until noon” guys?
I will just say this: My diet gets progressively worse as the day ages
Seagerless Doghairs certainly makes this matchup lean a bit more back towards the Cubs. Unless Cubs staff had ownage on him, which I don’t know. He certainly clubbed the Giants all season — but, that’s nothing special when I think about it, the whole league clubbed the Giants…
Cal’s beat down on Motor Mouth Mike Leach and his crew was first win since 2003 against USC over a top 10 rated team. Maybe Wazzoo overrated a bit, but they are a good team. Bears defense roared up and forced 7 turnovers in the smoke. I heard first half (Joe Starkey torture), only saw game highlights. Cal finally has a young coach in Wilcox that looks like he has an idea. Plus, he’s got a very solid staff with a couple of ex-HCs adding to the coaching mix. This team is not going to make as many mistakes as under Dykes. A lot of times, as we Giants fans know, if you just let the other team make mistakes, a less talented squad can take it. This is only one game, and a totally unexpected win let alone blowout win. But, still the biggest win for Cal since a long time. BTW, this Friday night Pac 12 games is bullcrap. The visiting team is at a big disadvantage, plus it’s just plain wrong…
Amateur base running mistake by Gardner…
3rd base coach
Loo did you just see GnR?
I should have mentioned Honey Bunches of Oats, too. Great cereal, with a slightly risqué name.
Abe Lincoln liked boiled eggs and toast for breakfast.
Fun fact.
worst fucking effort I’ve ever seen with a glove. After little league, he’s headed for that puss league they make you play in if you don’t make Babe Ruth…..
I don’t even call it “breakfast” cereal, because I usually eat it late at night.
cereal is shady. I don’t trust any food I can’t watch age with my own eyes. Nobody knows how old cereal is. Expiration dates mean nothing. It could easily be a big joke the cereal industry is playing on all of you.
My dad ate bran flakes for breakfast for decades and lived to be 91. 🙂
He was my step-dad, though; I don’t have his genes.
I detest all the crap cereals they make for little kids. Lucky Charms, Captain Crunch, and all that garbage.
When I was a kid my mom bought huge bargain bags of a cereal called “puffed rice.” It was like eating a bowl of styrofoam balls, and we liked it! I couldn’t eat that stuff now.
Wait a second, didn’t you post that you like Frosted Flakes? Frosted Flakes is in that category big time.
I disagree. They’re recognizable as flakes of corn. What the heck are Lucky Charms? Candy trying to disguise itself as a breakfast cereal.
Flakes of corn completely covered with corn syrup! They sound like you’re pouring a box of dimes into the bowl with all of that dried fructose on there!
Interesting development regarding Seager. Cubs have a chance.
Seager was dinged up a few times in the second half. Dodger fans debate him going to 3b like Giants debate Posey going to 1b.
“Giants fans,” I meant.
I love that a cereal dispute has broken out here at the flap……
And we haven’t even mentioned the warm cereals- Quaker Oats, Malt-o-meal, and all those. I generally like a lot of those.
Cream of Wheat! I’m a fan.
On this, we’re in perfect agreement!
I won’t eat creamed or cream of anything…
GNR is tomorrow night, Flavor…
excellent. Looking forward to the summary of the night. GnR is one of my favorite bands of all time
I don’t know much about cereal but it seems to me that the frosted flake is dipped into some pretty gnarly shit….
I make this complaint from time to time, and I think it’s my issue—–but does it seem to anyone else out there that the sound mix is way off and the crowd noise is drowning out the announcers? Drives me nuts and I usually only get funny looks when I explain it to people.
i have the game on mute.
I agree about the bad sound-mix. Although, Buck getting drowned out isn’t all bad. Would like to hear Smolz better, though.
“pouring a box of dimes into the bowl..” that’s solid gold (or should I say, “solid alloy”)….lqtm
is there a difference between cream of wheat and oatmeal? Both sound awful to me. Where do grits fall on the scale?
Cream of Wheat and Oatmeal are quite different. Cream of Wheat sort of looks like grits. Oatmeal is pretty much like the stuff in oatmeal cookies.
Both are nice with brown sugar and milk.
I don’t remember if I’ve ever had grits. Are grits made from corn?
Watch and learn:
i’m learning so much this afternoon.
Somehow I’ve never seen that movie.
From Wikipedia:
Grits are a food made from corn that is ground into a coarse meal and then boiled. Hominy grits are a type of grits made from hominy with the germ removed, which is corn that has been treated with an alkali in a process called nixtamalization. Grits are usually served with other flavorings as a breakfast dish, usually savory. Grits originated in the Southern United States but now are available nationwide. Grits are popular as a dinner entrée, shrimp and grits, served primarily in the Southern United States. Grits should not be confused with boiled ground corn maize which makes “hasty pudding” or “mush” or when using coarse ground corn, which may be made into polenta, or the “mush” made from more finely ground corn meal.
Mush! That’s what we called all the hot cereals when I was a kid.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B02D4FtCwj4&list=RDB02D4FtCwj4&t=63
Mush, with milk and sugar. I’m all in.
Butch looks like a young Mick Jagger…
Verlander. Wowsa
I was thinking about this, so I looked it up:
MLB Home Runs & Sacrifice Hit Totals for the year:
2017: 6105 – 925
1987: 3644 – 1764
Pancakes. Totally awesome. There’s a place in Alameda called Olie’s or something like that where the best pancakes in the world are made. It’s famous for its waffles, but I don’t get the concept of waffles. I’m a little iffy on French Toast, too.
It’s an absolute outrage that they have yet to produce a frozen microwavable waffle.
I have complained to Eggo in writing and they politely thanked me for my input…
A toaster does a pretty nice job, Loo—and you’re not gonna get that essential waffle crunch in a microwave.
Who has room for a toaster?
Yeah, I don’t see the appeal of the Eggo thing. “Leggo my Eggo” is a clever slogan, though. One of the better ones in ad history.
I find the crunch of waffles to be off-putting. I’m not a big fan of toast either. Toasty dry bread. Meh.
I don’t like toasted bread on sandwiches, either.
I detest grilled cheese sandwiches. I’m iffy on macaroni and cheese.
Bird looks a little like Tino Martinez
On a whim I tried to make blueberry pancakes before work this week. I had a large bowl of blueberries and I’m not really down with shoving them into my mouth like popcorn in 45 seconds. Problem was, I was trying to go from concept to completion in like 15 minutes and the product suffered as a result. A couple of them were decent.
I have never in the history of my life heard of eating blueberries by themselves.
I invented it . It saves times, no milk involved, boom boom on with my day.
Ripe blackberries are hard to beat. When I was a kid my parents had blackberry vines in the back hard on wire trellis. They’d be ripening usually around Memorial Day. Fresh picked just off the vine, just blow the dust and bird crap off them and eat them right there on a warm late Spring afternoon. Great flavor…
Aggressive baserunning…I love it!
The Astros have some magic this season.
Shrimp and cheese grits (cooked with a touch of jalapeno or even some red pepper flakes), plus of side of greens cooked with garlic is mmm mmm good. Add a nice glass of Pinot Gris or Fume Blanc, even a Pinot Noir if so inclined, and that’s livin’, my friends…
What Snarkk said. That’s a southern staple and damn good. You guys would die if you saw what I ate last night. Post oak salt and pepper rubbed beef short rib with espresso BBQ sauce. I never take pics of food, but I did last night. It was otherworldly.
Yeah, wllco. I live in Houston for 3+ years. The food types available there are pretty damn good. It’s not really “the South” there yet IMO, but pretty damn close, especially as you head east toward the Louisiana line. Almost makes up for the town being sucky in a lot of other ways. We used to go to the Bistro Provence on Memorial, it’s still there according to Google Maps. I think that was the name of it when we used to go there 16+ years ago. Really great French bistro food, at least back then it was. Stews, casoulets, moules, roast duck, foie gras. Definitely worth a try if you’re out in that area. That and Americas were our favorite eateries…
No guarantees, but ‘Stros in great position.
I’m looking forward to a possible Stros’ champagne shower celebration with a Stros t-shirt-wearing Kate Upton in the locker room…
Wouldn’t kill her to drop 15 lbs…
I wouldn’t make a big deal out of it….
Speaking of women dropping a few pounds, Marie Osmond looks better to me at 60 than she did at 25. Absolutely blows my mind.
I knew I was growing up when Mrs. Robinson looked better to me than the daughter…
Mrs. Vogelsong blows her away – wet or dry…
I’ll take a hot bowl of grits, throw in some shredded cheese, 2 over easy eggs and mix the whole thing up.
Good Eats in my book.
Can Kershaw do what Verlander did today? That’s the true test. Carry your team on your back. That’s greatness. Regular season stuff is all well and good but you gotta do it in the post-season.
If the Yankee catcher handles that relay throw, Altuve is out at home by 15 feet…
Yeah, I was thinking about that too. If he handles throw there, 3B coach (Oakland’s own Gary Pettis) would be catching major heat. I love aggressive baserunning, but that was borderline loco with 1 out. 2 outs with Chapman on the mound—I’m all in on sending him. Ball got cleanly cut off without even reaching the warning track—and he sent him coming from first and not running on the pitch!
Did Judge throw to the wrong cut-off guy? That play looked weird.
I think he might have airmailed the primary guy and Didi tried to salvage it.
I know they do it all the time, but it’s a tough play with a catcher’s mitt…
What a game today! Things aren’t looking good for my chances of seeing Game 6.
Your situation reminds me of my son and nephew and Chuck’s daughter having tickets to Game 5 of 2014 NLCS. I remember hanging with them at a coffee shop a week or so before the series and them hoping they’d actually get to see the game.
That all came together pretty well for them!
Hey–I pay no attention to the AL. Is Hinch considered a good manager now? I remember him being such a colossal flop in AZ that I was surprised he even got another gig.
Matt still has the bat, right\?
Despise those blue Cubs uniforms…
Wilco– does Pettis catch shit from Astro fans for being too aggressive? That send had “R-Kelly” written all over it till Sanchy dropped the ball.
I know R Kelly fucked it up both ways, and even mixed in a few “interfering with the runner” incidents to really spice things up, but I seem to recall that most of his mistakes involved holding guys up when he should have sent them. Agree?
yes. I’d say he failed to send more than he sent over the cliff
Don;t undersesttimate the Doyers ability to choke this shit away.
TBS doesn’t give you the running pitch count or pitch velocity.
Why?
I can’t watch the Dodgers—literally. I’m home sick and I don’t have the game on. Staring at the glut of young talent makes me insane with jealousy. When things go badly for them, I give a temporary sigh of relief. When they go well and they start mixing in crowd shots of Magic and Lasorda, I can’t handle it. It’s not worth it for me.
I’ve got issues—-I know.
dude, I refuse. Watching USC and Utes, Stanford and SD St on later.
I love cold cereal, mostly Special K almond flakes yada yada. After b-ball last night I was on some while watching the 3rd Q of Cal and then that wild TD. College ball just more fun than No fun League esp since idiot stuck his nose into it.
Damn. They got 23 pitches out of Kersh. Not a bad start. I still like the Cubs. They are battle tested and have done this before. Just keep rolling like the Giants did in 2012. Always on the edge . . .
A lot to catch up on. Warm Cereal? Quacker Oats, Oatmeal? Fucking porridge? Why does it look like a bowl of vomit? Not the way to start the day.
Since my mom was such an awful cook, breakfast was my wheelhouse from about 6 on. Cinnamon toast led to Eggos led to instant breakfast led to scrambled eggs led to over easy, led to pancakes (we had a big flat griddle that was awesome, french toast, bacon up the wazoo, and Bay’s english muffins to top it all off.
Breakfast was essential because the rest of the meals usually contained a lot of liquids. Lets just say I started young.
Suck it Turner!
My dad had 3 famous patients over the years (he was a dentist). Jerry Garcia, AJ Hinch and Mark Marquess. He saw Marquess all the time over the course of 30+ years. He stitched up Hinch’s mouth once and he came back a few times for a cleaning. When he was just starting out in the 60’s, Jerry showed up at his office for something minor, my dad gave him a $45 bill, he never paid it.
That’s a fun fact. Wasn’t Eric Byrnes a client as well?
no I worked with Byrnes dad when I sold real estate. His desk was right next to mine. Eric came in all the time when he was back from UCLA. He was a douch……
What up with Seager? He runnin’ against the wind?
Injured. Too many Hollywood Nights.
Apologies—that was awful.
Not a big Seger guy and I absolutely detest “Old Time Rock n Roll” song. Its not in a category with Born in the USA, but not too far away. Favorite Seger song is “Her Strut.” I like that simple riff.
Hah! Dad jokes rule. Yeah never really liked Seger much, Get out of Denver’s good song, and Turn the Page. The rest is schmaltzy crap. Much like Johnny Melon Cougarcamp. Samer with Springsteen. Never saw the deal with any of those guys.
Hey Chuck…yep, still has the bat. I was sleeping on the floor of his room last weekend starting at that sucker in the closet.
Cool. Still got the pic of the ball somewhere.
.
Cubs hitters seem shocked that Kershaw gets a big strikezone. I could have told them that.
Loo, the pitch count and velocity are in the graphics box, but in tiny numbers.
Thanks, Zum. I think I have the screen set too wide so it doesn’t quite fit or something…
I don’t get Bob Seager at all. I just chalk it up to some kind of inexplicable Midwestern thing, like REO Speedwagon and Night Ranger.
oh dude don’t disrespect the great Night Ranger. You must be soured on them because of their lame videos or something.
Well, KISS was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so everything is up for grabs now. 🙂
With you on that one. I saw Night Ranger at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara in the early 80’s and had a great time.
Agree with Zum on REO Speedwagon though.
i never got KISS at all and my buddies were all over them. We were 12. I was more into Styx, Van Halen, AC/DC and Boston back then. Man, I would give anything to have been at that Night Ranger show with you Diggity.
KISS just completely sucks. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doesn’t have any meaning to it anymore. If it ever did.
I like one Bob Seger song: Night Moves. And I don’t like it that much.
lulz!
I never liked “Born in the U.S.A” until I saw Springsteen do a solo acoustic show in the San Jose St. basketball arena. The song was very moving solo acoustic. Mostly his performance sold the song.
He was touring his brilliant solo acoustic “The Ghost of Tom Joad” album.
It’s the worst song in history.
Second is anything by Meatloaf.
i always thought Meatloaf was just a joke band like Weird Al. No?
Pretty close.
I liked KISS and they have a lot of songs that I like. But, they’ve also got a lot of tunes that I think are awful too. Best underrated KISS album: Creatures of the Night. Even the Gene Simmons songs on that record are pretty good and most of his stuff is pretty bad. I saw them on that tour at the Civic Center in SF. There was hardly any security and there were some intimidating looking dudes there. I remember my friends and I being pretty uncomfortable. A young Motley Crue was the opening act.
Yeah, the concert scene was a different world in those days. At an Elton John concert I saw several people snorting cocaine. Elton John?!
I never got Springsteen either. I don’t think I’m old enough.
Almora. Of course Almora.
Cubs go yard!
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been a fucking joke from the get go. A bunch of pompous asses that are more concerned with the image of the bands they admit than fairly representing all music. They hate the heavy metal genre and would rather admit bands like Jane’s Addiction (who I like), but had like 3 albums and maybe 5 big songs.
i think you could say that about all the HOF’s. I’ve never been to a HOF but I’m not boycotting them or anything. I’d go to the baseball HOF just to see old shit. This guy has a great business idea, if any of you have an old glove in the closet you might want to do this:
That’s pretty damn cool.
i’m not a beard guy but i admit some guys look ok with them. Justin Turner is not one of those guys…..
Just read Red Sox are set to interview Alex Cora, Stros bench coach of one year. Huh? I’ve seen his name mentioned a lot about mgr. openings but what does this guy have on his resume?
if you are an analytics driven manager that can be a big selling point for some teams. I have no idea if Cora is down with analytics……
Apparently the Latino players rave about Alex Cora. Not sure how he is different from other Latin speaking coaches but he seems to be the name de jour.
Yeah never really liked Seger much, Get out of Denver’s good song, and Turn the Page. The rest is schmaltzy crap. Much like Johnny Melon Cougarcamp. Samer with Springsteen. Never saw the deal with any of those guys. Kiss? Overrated. They have a few good songs, and Destryoer is decent. I had too many older brothers and sisters listening to the Doors, Hendrix, Traffic, Airplane and such. I got into the Dead when I got into the drugs. But is was hard rock guitars ll the way. Sabbath, VH, Montrose, Alvin Lee, Roy Buchanan, Zappa, on and on. All those guys played all the time.
Night Ranger? Too hair band for me, although Don’t Tell Me you Love me is a great song. Was at the delta (herman and helen’s) rolling around in the grass parking lot with a girl, banging her to that song cranked from someone else’s campground at 4 am. Every time I hear that song I get a special feeling.
excellent-o night ranger paragraph my man. Epic.
just watched the Suburbicon trailer. That looks outstanding.
One last thing about Cal. Justin Wicox is the son of one of the best linebackers in 49er, and NFL, history.
Yeah Dawg, not sure what Hinch is doing differently from his stint in Arizona, other than the fact that he has loads of talent around him now. It probably helps that he is a Stanford guy, so he understands the analytics better than most, which is a must with the Astros front office.
Quintana turned into a nibbler this inning.
Walk 2 guys in an inning? That will kill a team vs. the Dodgers.
Puig is the worst bat flipper in the world. The worst. He has no idea where the ball is going.
Then Taylor hits an HR. It all goes their way in ’17.
whatever. They were +220 to win this game and they were in serious danger of losing it. And Kershaw is a fucking headcase man. If the Dodgers think they can ride this guy the way the ‘Stros are riding Verlander they are totally fucked. Kershaw was completely average tonight as he usually is in the post season. How many days can Yu pitch in a row?????
I literally just got up and walked around the house wondering where an Aretha Franklin song was coming from. I finally realized it was the god damn Dodger Stadium background music.
Puig is too oblivious to feel the enormity of the moment. He’s playing free and easy. All the other players on each team are nervous.
