Home Before The Storm
We have a 7 games at home and it would be a good idea to win as many of them as possible. After that we go on the road for 8 against Houston, The Cubs and Sherpaville. I’m not one to sweat the schedule but that is a killer 8. If we burn up the bullpen early in that stretch I don’t know if I’ll be able to bring myself to watch the Colorado massacre.
Our plucky, average starting pitchers should appreciate being back at home. If they can’t do it here, they can’t do it anywhere….
Harvey goes against Suarez on Wednesday….Extra excited for that one.
Dubs tonight….
Atleast we got the last win in Pitt with are new “Ace”it always makes the plane ride home better ..
Reds did embarrass the Dodgers, holding them to 9 runs in 4 games. Supposedly one of the reasons they fired the mgr Prce (former pitching coach) was the lack of improvement and development of their young pitching.
Harvey was on a pitch limit when he shut out LA, through 4 innings. Wonder what plan is for here.
Looking up that Reds team from ’76, Rose was 35 appeared in every game and hit over .300.
What is up with players of today who are supposedly in decline at age 30? Today guys have all the advantages in travel, health care/ and training clubhouse amenities, make better money yada yada.
I don’t get it. You can also add in the fact that so many of them wind up on the DL/unable to play.
Yeah, but how many guys did what Rose was doing? He’s one guy and a freakish guy at that. I’d be interested in learning how prevalent it was for players in their mid-30’s of that era to have such big years.
Rose #s at age 35: 759 PAs hit .323 with 42 doubles 10 HRs .854 OPS scored 130 runs.
He had old man strength. 🙂 Big forearms and a barrel chest.
Players played through injury more in those days. Only 24 teams, less job security, with free agency only just starting.
The fear of getting Wally Pipped was a more real thing.
Yeah Ray Fosse knows all about that barrel chest..
Old man strength, I like that. He was still doing it in the early 80’s when he helped the Phillies win it all.
Rose’s slash line in 1980 for the Phils, .282, 64 RBI, 185 hits, 95 runs scored, not to mention that he stole 12 bases at the age of 39. You can throw 42 doubles in there too. Pretty impressive. He brought a lot of fire to that team, something that had been lacking, despite great talent.
You also can’t say the 1976 pitching was inferior, e.g., check out the Mets, Dodgers and Phillies pitching compared to the 2018 Dodgers (WHIP and ERA). In fact, the pitching was better IMO. Way more complete games by starters and overall, less a “specialized” league regarding bullpen use.
Like a lot of teams in those days, the Reds were hostile to the concept of free agency. The dismantling of the team began almost immediately with the loss of their best starting pitcher, Don Gullett, to Steinbrenner’s Yankees.
Quiz – A player with 16 years in the big leagues and retired in 2017 (or perhaps, didn’t get offered a contract) had 6 nick names, but I am going to give you only 5 of them (because the 6th one is too big of a clue) . . . Saturn Nuts, Smokey, Tacks, Dirty, Free Love.
Who is he?
Hector Sanchez is a guess but he didn’t pitch for no 16 years,
And he was Dirrrrrrty anyway . . .
Big news today for Jersey and other states to legalize sports betting.
finally. Can’t wait to see what this looks like. They should set up kiosks at the racetracks in Ca, that would boost attendance and, ultimately, handle
They’re probably popping champagne at Monmouth Park over this.
Always interesting when KNBR is touching on topics covered at the Flap. Don’t worry Flappers Krukow doesn’t see Posey as a power hitter (he never did). In fact, Posey doesn’t try to hit homeruns, he often takes some swing out!
I’m no longer concerned about his power. It’s completely gone. He can still contribute to a line up
If Belt wasn’t such a pussy Posey’s declining power numbers wouldn’t matter.
Amen.
Blade, is it Werth? He’s not on a big league team this year.
No to Chuck and Zum . . . New clue. He spent the majority of his time with the Reds.
As I mentioned on the last thread, some of those plucky, average starters have done OK on the road (three games in Atlanta), so, no reason not to be able to get it done, here.
When comparing stats for our starters vs. bullpen, overall, the starters have slightly better numbers:
ERA: starters – 12th NL, 4.37 / relievers – 11th, 4.26
WHIP: starters – 7th NL, 1.30 / relievers – 12th, 1.45
Avg (against): starters – 6th NL, 2.41 / relievers – 14th, 2.63
Cincy starters are last in NL in ER 5.08), 14th in WHIP (1.41), and 14th in a average against (2.67)
Also, it isn’t like the Reds are crushing th ball either. Team BA is .244 (SF’s is .252). They trail us in SLG and OPS, too, and have hit four fewer HRs as a team.
Just win some fucking games…
Nick Hundley, “We’re in the mix.” And he isn’t wrong, despite how damn ugly this team can look at times. 4.5 back, with Bum looming on the horizon. The Dog-ears and Snakes getting 4-gamed this weekend certainly helped matters. Now they need to start winning again.
Blade, Bronson Arroyo?
Bingo . . . BroYo is his other nick and it would have been too big of a clue.
Free Love did it for me. He’s a musician, so it fits.
I had no idea why or how he got that moniker. I thought that was hilarious.
What about Saturn Nuts? Big balls would be my guess, but really?
Blade, I’ll go with Brandon Phillips just because of the clue you gave. Cause I certainly didn’t come up with that from those nicknames
Good guess Flavor. I was thinking he would get a couple of votes.
I don’t give a shit that the Reds swept the reeling Dodgers. The Reds stink. We should beat them easily. We’ll see what they do with Billy Ham. He’s been batting 9th but he had 3 sbs yesterday and he typically destroys the Giants so maybe they bat him leadoff this series.
Here’s another one and I am holding back on one nick name . . . World, Boogie Bear, Tatonka
Clue – MVP
Kevin Mitchell
Nice one
The other nick was Mitchell Monster
Bonus . . . Who was called Captain Underpants, Wawindaji?
Hunter Pence?
Yeah – I remember Boogie Bear from when Mitchell was with the Gigantes.
I doubt Texas follows the superme courts ruling and allows gambling in Texas. Texas politicos pockets are full of bribe money from the casinos in the neighboring states. But fortunately I am only 2 hours from Louisiana, so I won’t have to drive far to wager.
Texas legislature is about as corrupt as they get…
“Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow joined Murph & Mac on Monday morning, and slammed San Francisco’s inability to lay a bunt down through 41 games.
“I think if you were to evaluate them, they can get a whole lot better,” Krukow began. “I mean they are the worst bunting team I think I’ve ever seen.
“They need to do the little things better. I mean they are giving up 90-foot increments left and right. The fact that they can’t get a bunt down absolutely ticks me off and I don’t understand that, I really don’t. I mean this is a dead spot in the lineup. If you can’t at least have a productive out off a guy who isn’t a very good hitter, put the bunt down, and it’s across the board. So that has to improve.””
Totally agree. That’s on the players and coaches. Samardzxxx looks like he has no clue when he’s up there bunting. Ridiculous…
Wasting away again, up in Sherpaville
Vaping weed chased by a forty of malt
Some people claim that the pitching’s to blame
But I know, it’s Brandon Belt’s fault
lqtm…
Unca, yes – Hunter Pence
I thought Pence’s wife wore the underpants now…
LMAO…
And the big boy pants, and…
Which Giant was the “Carson Crusher?”
lulz
Matt Williams!
Correct AK! Bonus points if you can guess his other 2 nicks????
Matt Williams
You’re right twice!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂
Shit double post my bad..
Giants throwin a deal tonight,
Promenade section Doggie Diner booth 6 bucks for a domestic tall one 5-7 pm come one come all Flappers🍺🍻🍺🍻🍺🍻
Hmmm The Big Marine?
And Matt the Bat?
Bingo! Nice one AK
Bum scheduled to throw a bullpen session today, and to live hitters on May 22. He will then do a brief minor league rehab and come-off the 60-day on or shortly after his May 25 eligibility date.
“He could be ready when his date’s up,” says Bochy. “It’s gonna be close…he’s got to be excited about it. We have no issues with that finger. We’re on schedule to get things rolling,”
Who’s also nicknamed, “The pancake from Haina?”
Clue – one of the most well known Giants.
I think you’ve stumped the band on this one.
I’ll guess Barry Bonds only because he played for the Honolulu Islanders briefly . . . . but
Hanson to the 10 day DL.
Slater to the show!
Blanco batting lead-off tonight, of course, though.
Blanco’s at a -0.2 WAR for the season so far. He’s slightly worse than a random replacement player.
Slater to the show, so lead him off, anybody but Blanko..
1. Gregor Blanco (L) LF
2. Andrew McCutchen (R) RF
3. Buster Posey (R) C
4. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
5. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
6. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
7. Austin Jackson (R) CF
8. Kelby Tomlinson (R) 2B
9. Chris Stratton (R) P
Okay, I translated his nickname from Spanish, i.e., his actual nickname is “el panqué de haina”
Nice guess Xoot! I went to a couple of games while living in Honolulu, when they won the PCL in 1970.
Tito Fuentes?
No AK . . .
Barry Bonds, or Bobby Bonds?
No unca
If you guys have 20-25 minutes to watch this Dravecky interview by Renel Brooks-Moon, do it . . . it’s awesome, especially the part about Dave’s anger about losing his livelihood; and, Kevin Mitchell’s refusal to report to the Giants when him, Craig Lefferts and Dravecky were traded by San Diego to the Giants in 1987 (frickin’ hilarious).
https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2018/5/13/17350400/san-francisco-giants-sfg-productions-60th-anniversary-renel-brooks-moon-interviews-dave-dravecky
New clue . . . He was ranked MVP #5, #10, and #13 in 3 of his 17 seasons in the MLB.
Orlando Cepeda?
Felipe Alou?
Wrong AK
Whoops . . . I meant regarding Cepeda. You’re right about Alou.
that was a really good one, Blade. One lesson learned–Dominicans have crazy nicknames at home.
Yeah Xoot, I was actually surprised by that one. Also, the fact that Felipe was in the top 15 MVP votes 3 times. Simply amazing as I always get him confused with his little brother, Matty, – who could hit for average, but had no power (still recall either the Stratomatic or Cadaco All Star Baseball Game, where Matty had the thinnest HR slice on his spinning wheel of all MLB players).
This TNT pre game show is interminable. Listening to Chuck and “big fella” argue over the simplest stupidest shit is burning up my IQ points. I don’t understand why this show pulls such a high rating.
Ok my turn lol,
Who was nicknamed:
Hillbilly Machiavelli?
You’re tough AK (no clues???).
Stix?
Lol that should be it Loo, but no..
LMAO. Speaking of, I just dropped Carstie a letter the other day.
Ok Blade, got busy for a moment
Clue: Played 11 years from 55-66 5 teams not the Giants, but has Giants ties for sure.,
You sure he isn’t a golfer?
He’s thinking I guess this contratment could be used to stir my moonshine still.,
“Yep, Uncle Jed. I asked em where the woods was and this here is what they showed me.”
Iguadala was sleepwalking that first half. Terrible. Chris Paul is a punk. Dubs will not get many calls in the second half…
Wow. Just flipped over to the Warriors and looks like it was one helluva a half. 56 all…
Dubs are working easier for their shots, think it will take a toll on Rockets 2nd half.
And Green as usual running hot, can’t afford that 2nd T and injection..
One of those “cool your ass down injections?” 😂
pretty noticeable earthquake on the Hayward fault just now
You felt it? Any idea where it was centered? We feel them up here in the foothills occasionally.
epicenter was about a mile or two from my home, apparently right under highway 13, but only 3.8. Has to get up about 5.0 I guess before the press box at China Basin starts to move.
Damn! What a play by Craw on the throw and Belt on the dig!
yeah, that was beautiful
Boom! Craw flashing the leather, and now the bat!
180 degree difference from Pittsburgh and Philly.
Love the two out RBIs. Love them all, but two out are special…
the replay of Crawford’s double was cool–he was looking right down the barrel of his bat as he drove it to LF. Very nice. Let’s sweep these redlegged mofos
jeezus, the reds’ pitcher just did nearly the same thing. wtf? the idea is shutdown, not breakdown
Warriors looking solid!
Come on Stratton…
Xoot, it wasn’t strong enough to shake my martini 🍸…But seriously the next big one could be on that Hayward Fault, which could be devastating, hospitals, lots of businesses, etc on that fault line..
well, my whiskey sloshed a bit. the only huge building over here that will survive the big one is Cal’s Memorial Stadium, which straddles the fault. They put it on rollers a few years back.
I’ll take that 7pt lead going into the 4th.Man .Dont know what Kerr says to these guys at halftime but their always putting the clamp down on teams in the 3 rd quarter..
Cutch heating up…nice wheels by Blanco…
Love how Klay plays…
Warriors tightening the noose and putting the pedal to the metal…
Gregor with the stupidest play of the night. So far.
Man, that is some shoddy-ass D (if you can call it that) by Houston…
This dude Romano is no mystery to Longo (who should have had a hit) and Craw.
Craw’s hitting has been a nice boost.
Giants, even tho they’ve had their woes, should sweep these bums…
Regardless of the Red’s six game win streak…
Cincy is the worst pitching team in the NL not named Miami.
Stat-wise (ERA, WHIP, BAA) they ARE the worst…
Nope . . . Check out ERA (Miami still the worst).
But this game isn’t over yet, so . . . lol
True there brother…😉
When did it become a rule that you only throw pitches in the dirt when you’re ahead of the hitter 0-2?
They wasted ’em outside for a hundred years…
Hey Houston -first seed this, bitches…
Hey Houston.
You wanted the Dubs?
You got ’em…
Blade, you’re right…Marlins suck even worse than the Red’s pitching…they do have the same BAA @ .255…
Go check now Chi . . . The BAA just went to .256 . . . hehehe
🙄
Which Flapper mentioned that today? Hilarious Kruk puffing his chest out about this.
Missed the Kook comment. What was it, and what Flapper comment are you referencing?
Apparently, Kruk went ballistic about the Giants not being able to lay down a bunt. So, he’s quite happy about Stratton right now and the Giants taking extra bunt practice today.
Chi, check out Zum’s 12:02pm
That whoopin’ tonight has to weigh heavy on the psyche of Houston going forward…
As I felt with much of the series against the Cavs last year, offensively the Dubs didnt really play that well tonight…Rockets over-rated. I should have been in Vegas with $10k on this game…
If Harden weren’t in shooting form tonight, Dubs would have crushed ’em by 20+…
Fuck…
That ball was tattooed.
Get it together , Stratton…really. Walk the fucking opposing pitcher?..
They put seats in the triangle, that’s a HR.
Final jeopardy question will be:
”Hillybilly Machiavelli “
And contestants the latest clue, minimum wager 1,000 though you could hit the daily double and shoot your wad..
Though he never had a stellar baseball career, this man had a huge effect of bring the Giants back to respectability even though he was only 1 game over .500 as a manager in his career..
Roger Craig?
I think you’re right Mac.
We have a winner chicken dinner for MacDog!!🏆Yes Roger Craig! Humm Baby And Hillbilly”Hic” Machiavelli!!
Humm Baby!
Don’t get yer dauber down or shoot your wad…
15-46 in 2 years as a Met…
And won 2 rings with the Dodgers! ’55 and ’59.
.
