Sunday
Congrats to the Rays for having the balls to let Yarbrough pitch to two batters three times. He faced Pujols and Simmons 3 times. Wow. I can’t believe he made it through such a grueling task.
Here’s a cutting edge idea: how about you just never pitch your starting pitcher at all? Yeah, announce him as the starting pitcher….but just start Romo every game….at some point….warm him up 2 or 3 times….then….never….bring…..him….in.
That would trick the shit out of the opposition, eh? Saves wear and tear on that arm, too.
Cautiously optimistic about Blach today. He’s from Colorado and has pitched well against them in the past. Today is a pretty critical game. We are about to embark on a most difficult stretch of the schedule. Two in Houston, three at Wrigley and then three in Nepal. If we went 3-5 I’d be ecstatic but feel like it’s going to be worse than that…..
When I was a kid I loved this thing. Yeah, we used to fly off occasionally, that was part of the deal. That’s why I only saw them set up with dirt or grass around, like this one, not asphalt. Not saying there never was one on asphalt, though, and I would have got on it anyway. Hell, I went to parochial grammar school, we used to play all sorts of S on the asphalt playground, we used to fall all the time, our hands and arms were scraped up on a regular basis. I think that was a reason we boys had to wear the thick salt and pepper corduroy pants. The girls were tougher and smarter, they played on the asphalt in skirts, and they would fall once in a while, not as often as the boys. This circular thing was a low tech version of the Mushroom ride that you see at the Fair and Amusement Parks. I still love getting on the Mushroom…
Yep, I’ve mentioned a number of times recently that the team needed to have a good home stand because of that upcoming road trip.
And agree Flav…I would be pretty damned happy with a 3-5 roadie, given the team’s our boys will face.
Romo is starting again today!
I remember Wilbur Wood starting both ends of a DH 40 some years ago. Not really the same thing but that might be the last time. Also different was Mike Hampton (IIRC) starting consecutive post-season games for the Mets, but that was more of a scheduling quirk. Romo could start 4-5 in a row if there’s a day off in there…
Sorry to say, Hampton did not make consecutive playoff starts for the Mets, Was it end of NLCS/start of World Series you thought of? Leiter started WS Game 1.
Yes, looks like I was wrong about that. I was really sure, too.
I wonder what I was thinking of…
I see he closed out the Cardinals in the NLCS and then was able to come back and pitch Game 2 of the WS which is probably not unusual at all. I obviously forgot Leiter pitched Game 1. I might’ve posted tons of false information here over the years…
And then he left for Denver and its wonderful school district.
This MUST have been against the Giants . . .
I remember the 44 year old Spahn as a Met throwing an 80 pitch CG against the Giants in ’65. The pitch total was mentioned in the newspaper article about the game. That’s how I know it…
It helped that umps called a strike on pitches he threw 8″ outside….
I remember that epic game in 63 when Warren Spahn dueled Juan Marichal for 16 innings before Mays hit one out off him to win it.
Marichal was asked if you want to come out and he said, if that old man can still pitch so can I..
yeah wonder how many times they both went through the LU. Lot of HOF guys in them too.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN196307020.shtml
Man, that Braves logo in those days…..
thx Loo! Awesome game in Giants hist. I know it’s funky but I always dug Braves logo and road unis
so much cool stuff there. Spahn with the Braves only XBH Cepeda with SB Kuenn at 3b Mac in LF
Hiller hitting .183 in July Mays gunning down a guy at the plate
looks like answer to my question would be 6 times for both of them to go through the LU
The Giants struck out two times in 56 plate appearances.
Craw has always been one of their streakier hitters. Last year he just never got out of the funk til late season.
Right now he’s hitting .302.
I looked up 2015 and 2016 when he had .780 OPS and 2015 hit 21 bombs.
That year he hit .340 in May 217 in June and Sept. 6 of the bombs came in one month July.
2016 April and July BA was in .240s. June he hit .315 Aug .299 to wind up at .275
what I’ve seen he’s using whole field a lot. Vs. shift one fielder takes away right up middle so he’s adjusted by powering ball over it to LCF and CF.
Against Blach in his short career, Arenado is 7-11.
I suggest if Arenado is up with the bases loaded, Bochy waive the 4 fingers…
maybe even if they aren’t. So far no bombs yet, right?. Blach’s ERA of 4.00 is dang site better than guys around him.
Arenado is amazing player tho. wonder if he plays D against everyone else like he does vs. SF.
All I know is I wish the Giants had the guy. I think SF has his younger brother somewhere in the minors?…
Yeah his name is Jonah Arenado he was playing at SJ last year, only 22 , so room to develop has pop like his brother which would be great down the line.
Nats call up a 19-year old kid from the DR.
No idea whether he’ll succeed.
But, why can’t the Giants scout and pick up OF international talent like this?…
https://www.mlb.com/cut4/juan-soto-is-first-nationals-teenager-since-bryce-harper/c-277530214
Ramos is 18….and hitting .212 in single A
What are Giants scouts doing — drinking DR rum? SF has an “academy” down there, where’s the results?
With the Giants revenue, they should have the best scouting staff money can buy…
There hasn’t been results for years, and that’s one of the biggest flaws in this organization, imo. It’s hamstringing everything they do. I’ve said this before, but hopefully Bell can get it turned around.
I’m guessing Pence and Oaf are recalled for the upcoming road trip to 3 very HR friendly parks.
Gomez and Valdez are the likely casualties although it wouldn’t surprise me if they phantom DL’ed an outfielder…
1. Gorkys Hernandez (R) RF
2. Buster Posey (R) 1B
3. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
4. Brandon Belt (L) LF
5. Nick Hundley (R) C
6. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
7. Austin Jackson (R) CF
8. Kelby Tomlinson (R) 2B
9. Ty Blach (R) P
Wasting Samardjiza’s decent outing Thursday seems like a missed opportunity. The club could be going for the series win instead of a split today on their way out of town for a tough road trip.
Ramos is still young and moved up a level this year. Hopefully they hold onto him. The outfield will be interesting next year: Shaw, Slater, Williamson and some combination of Jackson, Hernandez,Duggar? Best thing you can say is at least they be younger.
.
These newfangled ideas about how to use the pitching staffs are wreaking havoc on fantasy baseball.
This one is intriguing, it might even work for the Giants current rotation.
Opposing teams have scored 18 times in the first inning for a total of 39 runs.
With two more against the Rockies, the Giants have scored 12 times, 24 runs.
If you disregarded first inning runs, four Giants losses would be reversed, two of their wins would become losses ( McCutchen’s big walk off doesn’t happen), two of their wins and one loss would become ties.
My case for Segio Romo as a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher is coming along nicely. What it lacks is the ability to compare him to other relievers with fewer than 1000 IPs (Baseball Reference.com minimum) and more than 500. That list could blow it out of the water.
When he left the Giants, Romo had a better Command Ratio than every pitcher in history with 1000 IPs. or more. Since then, Chris Sale has taken the top spot with 5.1 K’s to BBs. Interesting thing about Command Ratio, if you throw out the 19th Century pitchers, 9 out of the top 15 are still active and all of them but Schilling (retired 2007) and Pedro Martinez (2009) pitched in this decade.
Romo’s other big claim to fame is his career WHIP. He’s also second best all-time, nestled between Hall of Famers, Addie Joss and Big Ed Walsh.
Unlike Command Ratio, the top 31 offer a nice mix of eras. Kershaw is 4th. Bumgarner is 22nd, Scherzer, 31st. with Marichal and Koufax right on Bum’s ass 23rd and 25th.

I have no idea why players don’t run through the 1st base bag.
In Blanco’s case he face plants 1st base so it extends him another week are 2 in Bochy’s mind..
Great gun by Crawford to nail that Rocky at the plate Bullwinkle!
Gork is becoming another Andres Torres!
Stay test-free, Gorkys.
FLR is dominating.
Triple Specs!
Specs roped it!
just to be clear, we are winning because of power from GorkHead and Specs. Uh huh. I see….
And Posey scored the first run after hitting a triple.
We need a ball bag double or triple.
Rox BELTED!
Belt Bomb!
Belt finally deciding to swing the bat this year, instead of taking, watching and walking all the time, is a jizz worthy development for all of us. Mrs. James can keep the furniture saran wrapped for the rest of the year it seems…..
He just has to avoid the annual weird injury.
That’s the old Earl Weaver approach!
A hit a walk and a Bomb!!
Belted 3 run homer!!
Hundley has been outstanding this year.
Bombs away!
Back to Back Jacks!!
Damn. Take that ump . . . Hundley bomb.
Power conga line.
Nice to see Bochy bat Posey second today. That’s outside the box for Bochy.
going on this road trip at .500 is huge. Could be the last time we see .500 for a spell……
We’re getting Verlander and Cole in Houston. Tough draw.
If we win 2 games on this upcoming roadie I’d call that a victory
Bochy pre-game did not sound too excited about Mac’s two HRs in the past two rehab games. I’m guessing they don’t bring him up for Houston, after all it’s only a short pop to LF for HRs — too logical. R they figuring Mac can’t handle Verlander and Kuichel ? — yeah, let’s get Blanco out there to handle those guys…
that’s infuriating
I see zumiee says it’s Cole, not Kuichel. Well, regardless, I don’t see what they are waiting for to bring up Mac. Belt’s 3 run dinger today shows what power does for you, especially with a starting rotation that can barely go 5 frames every game. They need to score when up against the Stros, the Cubs, and these Rocks up at Coors…
Nice.
Gorkys with 4 HRs, Posey 2.
Gorkys with 40 fewer ABs.
On its face, that is astounding.
Whatever Gorkys is doing, Posey should check it out…
Biogenisis
Bringing up both Pence and Mac creates a quandary because there’s no obvious spot (to Bochy) for Mac.
Bochy wants to hang onto Gorkys and Blanco. And he likes having 13 pitchers.
you play Mac every fucking day till he cools off
The 13 pitcher stuff is just dumb. And obviously the more hitters available the better. Yes to playing Mac every day.
Dirt’s comment about blowing the Smarg game is spot on. We should have taken this series.
BB9 going OFF.
despite losing the Smarge game this was a good series and a super critical win today. Leaving at .500 instead of two games down on such a brutal stretch is huge.
Hella dumb last out at 3b there by Story. That one base down 4 runs is irrelevant.
Damn, only 2 games out of first and one-and-a-half out of second.
5, 4, 6, 5, 6, 3, 7 have been the last 7 scores against our pitching staff . . . We need to tighten that shit up or our bullpen will be gassed by the time Madbum and Cueto return.
that’s a line I’d expect to see from 5 starters like we have. These guys stink, there’s no reason they should be keeping us in games so often. In fact, it feels like they don’t. How are we doing this?
Dunno, except our hitters have been outstanding going 9, 9, 6, 5, 6, 5, 10 against those scores I already mentioned. Obviously, it will be hard to maintain that level of excellence.
Not having J.D. Martinez nor Pollock, and Goldy struggling; the D-Backs are in a total plummet.
Anyone see article in Athletic about Pence going to the same coach Mac went to? And Giants hitting coaches ok with it. If Pence starts hitting homers I hope this coach is making some big money!
Actionless Jackson should go see this guru as well! Shit he might even hit a homer ( which he has a big fat ZERO)instead of striking out all the time..
Anyone else notice how Blackmon went back to the wall attempting to grab Gorkys bomb? Conversely, our guy Actionless lets the ball (which was inside the park) hit the wall. This is twice in the last 2 games I have seen him watch balls hit the wall over his head versus making an attempt to catch the ball on the fly.
He drives my mom nuts. My mom keeps asking me why the Giants signed him. I tell her: he was cheap.
Can’t stand him either, but he came cheap, so no biggie. More concerned about Longo (long term) and Cutch.
Anybody else ever read those chats on FanGraphs where a FanGraph person takes on a load of random questions? Man, those people watch a lot of baseball. One of the chat leaders said he has 4 games on at a time sometimes on 4 different screens. I wonder what they get paid.
Jackson hit .353 vs LH pitching last year with an OPS of 1.013. Yes, he was cheap. But they had a plan for him, it just hasn’t worked out so far.
The pitching isn’t going to get better. This is who these guys are. The hitters are just going to have to keep hitting. Nothing wrong with that. This season was severely compromised when we lost Bum and Smarge before the season started and then Cueto. But all is not lost. If they can keep hanging around and then Bum and Cueto come back and Smarge tweaks it a little, the Giants can get another arm at the break if they need it.
Till then we just gotta roll deep with this Cobbled Together 5.
the five fives
welcome to the POTD. Gold.
regardless of what score is, you always want your team to set a pattern in first couple minutes second half.
Down 11, Rockets were just awful–lazy passes missed layups dumb fouls and wide open shots for GS.
Now they are down 21.
Great third quarter, but I didn’t like that last two minutes.
Draymond Green continues to do all the dirty work and do it well. He’s played great defense tonight, boxed out like a madman and grabbed 15 rebounds so far.
Curry looks just fine to me.
They are so much fun to watch when Steph is playing well!!!
Braves scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th to come back and top the Marlins 10-9. Wow.
Swanson hit the game-winner and then was running for his life from teammates who wanted to maul him.
A 41-point loss, what an embarrassment for the Rockets.
Williamson up to .468 and needs to be with the big club. Even with Belt mashing he’d be the club leader in OPS based on his MLB at bats this year (sss but still), Hernandez could move to CF and Jackson could fill his intended role.
This guy on McC Chronicles fully agrees with BF:
Jackson was a very good idea that was totally mishandled.
The Clevelands gave the Giants a perfect blueprint on how to use Jackson and it didn’t happen.

phew. Thank goodness, I was starting to doubt myself. 🙂
Happy the Warriors won but you know what? These NBA playoff games have sucked. Every single one is a blow out.
“The 5 Fives”. Sounds like a band from the 60s
https://tenor.com/view/the-temptations-gif-11075100
That would be “The Dave Clark 5” a band that formed in 1967..
Are theirs always Action Jackson one of Micheal Jackson’ brothers with The Jackson 5..
Schulman tweeted:
“Slater came out of Sunday’s Sacramento game with hip discomfort after a swing.”
I hope Mac didn’t get hurt by association somehow. If that’s possible, it could happen to him I’m sure of it
The Bombers wouldn’t make it as a team nickname these days.
😁
My alma mater, Ithaca, still has Bombers for its nickname.
The Albuquerque Isotopes, who play in the shadow of Sandia Labs, sort of updated that nickname.
Could be looking at a pennant race for the ages in the NL West…
