A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Beam Me Up (2-0), Scotty…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 4, 2018

……Cleveland fans continue to weep about NBA officiating on Twitter. Bottom line: the Warriors are just much better. Their pussy fans need to suck it up and accept that…..

This is a pretty big series with Arizona. I’ve been hearing about how badly the D-Backs are under performing this year. Time to see it with my own eyes. They have good players on that team. I’m not confident, especially without Belt…..

Draft Day! I don’t really care who they draft as long as it isn’t the high school kid Cole Winn. Take one of the college players. We need help as soon as possible.

There’s been a fun game running on twitter lately: Without revealing your age, what’s one thing you remember that a young person wouldn’t understand?

There are obviously a ton of answers. The first one that came to me: a water bed.

couple things to keep eye on while Belt is out.
First, Pablo with more playing time. So far he’s a .700 OPS guy with not a lot of pop who has been OK from left side but terrible RH. Didn’t realize too this is contract year for him…what can he still do? So far in 90 ABs 2 bombs 5 doubles.

SF faces 2 LHPs this series so if Pablo sits, Posey goes to 1b and Hundley C. Hundley really isn’t more than a backup so if he’s in the LU more often does production go up or down. As for Posey, like J T Snow used to say playing 9 innings at 1b is NOT a day off.

More games as regular LF for Mac, who other than couple decent games in Denver hasn’t done much lately/no bombs. Noticed he looks away a lot and tries to drive ball to RF, good idea as long as he isn’t lunging and swinging at bad pitches.
And now that he’s back, what do Giants do with Hanson? gonna be tough to get stroke back if he’s gonna watch Panik and Craw every day.

  3. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 4, 2018 at 8:07 am

Arrieta went off after the game, complaining kid SS Kingery screwed up by not getting anyone out on the ball Hanson hit and that the shifts employed by Phils aren’t working very well. Stats seem to back up what he said and the out might have been important but still. He gave up consecutive base hits to Panik and Posey before he hung breaking ball high and away for Cutch 3 run bomb that decided the game. Lotta twitter reaction from phils fans that aren’t happy either, with players or mgr.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 4, 2018 at 8:25 am

That would have been a close play at 2nd, so no guarantee there. Beyond that, even if they get the out, it doesn’t end the inning. There was only one out at the time. Arrieta absolves himself for giving up 3 hits and the bomb after that play? What a fucking tool. I heard the interview after the game and thought, what a dick.

Then again, he got the only RBI in the whole series. So there’s that.

Cavs have a lot tougher time slowing down GS with all the vets as opposed to Celts and their young team.
Celts have 4 guys who play a lot Rosier Tatum Brown Smart with combined 6 yrs experience.

GS with all their vets in there was very efficient with the ball and got lot of good shots. Cavs can’t allow them to score as much as they did; they don’t have firepower to win a game 110-120 points and generally play at slower pace.
And last night they did get good shooting games from Hill and Love…wasn’t near enough. I’d look for more physical inside game with big front line and trying to get Korver going a bit. J R and j Green played 50 minutes and totaled 11 points. See what Coach (?) Lue comes up with.

What I thought was key was getting production from Livingston . And I love that they started Javale. He got so many easy looks early. I hoped they would give him more playing time as he did well vs James in game 1.

The bench has been iffy these last 2 series, so Shaun’s 10 points was pretty big. Tell ya one thing tho, our bench is going to look a whole lot different next year.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 4, 2018 at 9:19 am

Livingston has been pretty much AWOL in the playoffs but for the first two games of the Finals. He definitely was a help in yesterday’s game. The real Finals was obviously the Rockets series. The Dubs just have trouble these days maintaining consistency. They usually start slowly, fire it up in Q3. Yesterday, they did pretty well in Q1, and Q3 was a wash, then Curry started connecting in Q4 after a lot of misses earlier….

LeBron commits an offensive foul every time he drives to the bucket. He pushes, bulls his body into the defender, uses his off hand to ward away the defender. Cavs fans whining about refs is laughable…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 4, 2018 at 9:48 am

Same with Houston. Harden gets a brush foul 60′ from the basket and always acts like he’s taking a shot. Every drive by LeBron is like he was shot 25 times with an AK-47. Regardless of the contact.

What bothers me the most is it seems that 9-10 times the Warriors drive to the hoop, there’s never a foul. Curry gets pummeled nearly every drive, yet doesn’t get the calls. AI was the same way. 8-10 times the other way, no matter the team, we get called for a foul.

Brush fouls on layups are especially ridiculous. They called one on Looney that was maybe a two-fingered brush of James’ shoulder. Green gets a T on his attempted block of James, but neither Thompson’s near crippling by Hill or Love’s shot to Steph’s head were called for anything more than a foul.

Some are now saying the Tigers are leaning toward catcher Bart in the draft. That would leave the pitcher Mize for the Giants.
None of the pundits really know, of course.
“ESPN baseball guru Keith Law has the Tigers taking Georgia Tech catcher Joey Bart with the top pick in his final mock draft, and one rival scout also predicted Bart to the Tigers in a conversation with the Free Press late Sunday night.”

If Rodriguez can be consistently decent, and Stratton and Suarez can continue to show some growth; then combine that with Bum coming back, and Holland having a decent game once in a while, then the starting rotation is almost worth memorizing. 🙂
Smarj, to me, is a complete afterthought. He’ll be back, and in the usual Giants way he’ll be in the rotation because of the big contract, instead of Sac where he belongs.
    Cueto, who knows?
Blach, a long reliever, and spot starter vs. the Dodgers.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 4, 2018 at 1:18 pm

I was surprised by Rodriguez’ success yesterday. He seemed to be effectively wild but its hard to see him staying when Bumgarner, Samardzija, Cueto and Belt return to the active roster. Some combination of Rodriguez, Gearrin, Johnson, Suarez, Stratton & Blach will have to give. Maybe the club makes an early trade.

Drafted in 2008, he spent about 1.5 seasons in the minors, around 720 ABs, before being brought up to stay in May 2010. For some reason, I thought he came up faster than that. Maybe because he came up for a cup of coffee in the expanded roster in 2009…

I remember seeing Buster Posey play in San Jose, during his 2009 stint there and I was struck by how (relatively) small he was. As snarkk and Willie recall when we visited San Jose a few years ago, there isn’t a bad seat in the house and I was sitting almost against the back stop when Buster played. He certainly wasn’t 6’1″, which I believe most baseball sites had him listed as. Conversely, Bart is supposed to be 6’3″ and 225lbs, easily 15 lbs heavier than Buster.

I think this dude will bring some heavy lumber when he makes our roster. At least, I hope so.

I am shocked about Dwight Clark’s death. Like Wilco, I didn’t think his illness had progressed that far/fast. This disease is horrible. RIP Dwight – you’re going to be missed by all 49er/football fans.

  43. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 4, 2018 at 6:52 pm

MLB Network’s Dan O’Dowd likes Joey Bart. He said this before the draft:
“Joey Bart, the catcher at Georgia Tech, for me, is the most impactful player in this year’s draft. When I said “impactful,” I didn’t say the most talented player — though I do think he might be the most talented, too. Catching, for me, is the most important position on the field. It’s the only position that’s involved in every single play, from the defensive standpoint, night-in and night-out. If you find an elite catcher that has sustainable potential long-term health, that brings elite tools and athleticism to the position, you start with the basis of a competitive advantage. To me, if I was starting from scratch, that’s where I would start. This kid, for me, he’s got the perfect size, he’s got exceptional athleticism, he’s got great hands behind the plate, he’s an exceptional blocker, he’s got 70 arm strength, so he literally shuts down the running game. And he’s been calling his own game at the collegiate level since he showed up on the campus of Georgia Tech. So that means he processes thought quickly, he’s a creative thinker, he’s a problem-solver and he does it all in a matter of split seconds. And, oh by the way, he’s got plus power, and though there are some swings and misses, I believe he’ll tighten that up in pro ball. I think he’ll make enough contact to be an offensive star. He reminds me of the type of impact Buster Posey had with the Giants. I’m not saying he’s a perfect comp to Posey because Posey has the natural hit feel that this guy doesn’t, but this guy has things that Buster didn’t. He’s got better power, better pure arm strength. He’s got, to me, as good athleticism, behind the plate. I believe in my heart he’s got that kind of chance to impact whatever organization he goes to.”

Dwight Clark’s passing makes me sad and pisses me off, that this disease took him. He’s just a little older than I. I heard Kevin the Rat on KCBS say that “the Catch” in his opinion was the single most important and memorable sports “moment” in Bay Area sports history (paraphrasing). I’m pretty much in agreement. To me the Giants 2010 WS win was the most satisfying and enjoyable experience as a sports fan, but the Catch most assuredly as a single event, signaled the end of a long time drought for the Niners. And, was the signature moment that started a 15 year dynasty of excellence that will never be equaled in the NFL. RIP to Dwight Clark…

Fountain pens, though most people don’t use the cartridges any more. That’s too funny, Chuck, because they’re one of my favorite hobbies these days and are experiencing quite the renaissance all over. They’re very smooth writing and the variety of ink colors available is mind boggling. Coupled with great paper, they’re a lot of fun. Very much old school. A lot of us are railing against the perceived demise of penmanship. Many schools have all but done away with it.

If you’re into journaling and things like that, they are very satisfying to use and beautiful to boot.

Isn’t Bart supposed to be one of the stud players in this draft, with the bat and the mitt?

Craig, sometime earlier this year or late last year, Eddie arranged for Dwight and his family to move near his Whitefish, Montana home where Eddie lives. Apparently, Eddie paid for everything. They were very close or as Eddie described him, his “little brother.”

from SB Nation on that Minnesota kid, by way of U of Kentucky:

“Hjelle is up to 6-11 and has gained some strength since high school, coming in now at a reported 225 pounds, though there’s still not a lot of obvious meat on his bones. Despite his great height he repeats his mechanics consistently and is unusually well-coordinated for such a tall pitcher, resulting in above-average command.

“His fastball has gained four to six MPH since high school, consistently at 91-93 now with reported peaks at 95-96. He’s refined a high school slurve into a plus curveball. He has an average change-up and when all three pitches are working his combination of size, stuff, and command seems unfair . . . .”

Talk about a back-handed compliment. “Love the pick, but he’s more of a back of the rotation guy.” Let’s see if he doesn’t end up better than that.

Hard to explain, but I like seeing Pence in right. Love his goofy throws, his unorthodox swing and his all out attitude and style of play. This is probably his swan song, but for a game or two of him flailing away out there, I could care less. It’s not like we have “all world” outfielders anyway.

Jeeeeebus. There goes the pitch count.

Flav, Eddie D lives right next door to Clark’s family in Montana. This totally sucks. His moment is one of the single greatest moments in all of sports.

What’s crazy is the players of that era you would see all over the place.
