Bum Time?
Are we in panic mode yet on Bumgarner? At what point do we say his *spring training* is over and it’s time to step up and pitch….well….ABOVE what they’re paying him? This should be a low scoring game by two dudes who usually dominant this particular opponent.
Great report by Dirt on the last thread, btw. Had me CTM (chuckling to myself) more than once…
Well, Bum has had two starts. I would hope that he is getting dialed-in, and certainly should be after this start. I mean he had at least one rehab assignment too, and bullpen sessions prior to that.
As I have mentioned a number of time of late, this next stretch with 13 division games, followed by Daniel’s Cards, the cubbies, and lastly the Fucking A’s, are critical as we head into the break. We need Bum on his game to lead the charge.
Yes, Dirt’s game recap was awesome and had me laughing, too. Reading his post, and mention of a Sheybaygan with kraut reminded me I need to get my ass down to another game, soon.
Yesterday’s game convinced me even more that Dyson should not own the closer role. I would prefer to see Bochy play it situationally, and close games via committee. Dyson looked awful yesterday. He threw a lot of pitches and many were up in the zone.
In 17 innings? No but especially vs. Pads at night at ATT you’d expect good solid 7 innings with all the numbers hits runs walks allowed to be better than they have been, and more Ks. And no more bombs.
Kinda funny when I opened Chron sporting green to inside page, Killion the clueless has a story on paternity policy. first sentence: “The Giants best hitter and leading AS candidate missed the first 3 days of a crucial (?) June homestand and no one has made a peep.” .
Then, “Which is a sign of progress.” What?
He had bullpen sessions, threw to live hitters, and had I believe two rehab assignments (one in Sacto and another in San Jose). Not saying he should be completely dialed-in, but he has had more than 17 innings to work out the kinks.
Spoiler Alert: Bumgarner is a good pitcher, not a great one. That’s why we wouldn’t get a ton for him and why it won’t take a ton to sign him.
There would never be a bigger gap between what a team might offer for Bum and what Sabes would accept
And I’m glad that is the case. He means too much to the franchise to give him away for fringe prospects.
Exactly and he’s hardly pitched at all for 2 years. Last column linked here mentioned names like Yanks Frazier or Nats Soto as type of return they might get, which is ridiculous imo. No one does that anymore.
He’s never been about haggling for $$$ and of course isn’t getting Opie or Greinke money.
I’m sure he and team can work out reasonable deal when time comes.
No one does that anymore? The Cubs did just that two years ago, trading Gleyber Torres for Aroldis Chapman.
I’m gonna be at the game on Sunday, club level. Hit me up if you’re gonna be there
Cool. What section you in Flav? Have fun and bring us a W.
not sure, behind home plate, my buddy has the tix and I’m meeting him
Giants have options on Bum at 12 mil per for this year and next. I do not see them getting the value on a trade considering the deal they Have for the rest of this year, and next. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
If Bum supposedly won’t pull in much return in a trade, then the FO should not sign him to a long term extension at massive coin, right?…
that’s the looming nightmare. Sabean, so dazzled by the ghosts of post seasons past, decides to hand over 200 million to him. For literally no reason.
where do you guys get this “massive coin” or “$200 mil” from? Look how hard it was for Arrieta to get a deal. I think the trend is running completely opposite direction.
200 mil is probably overstating it but he’ll get offered something way more than another team would offer him
Bum currently has 1500+ inning in 10 MLB seasons (including this year), and close to 400IP in the minors. I don’t see a huge contract, over five years in length (I would prefer 3-4, but that probably won’t fly). I think WillieD is right on how this is trending with SP salaries and contracts.
At the end of last year there was a lot of talk about the Giants should start rebuilding, then they went out and got McKutch and Longo, plus reports out of spring trading Bum was very focused and ready to dominate. Fast forward, Half of all the starters end up on the DL at some point during the season. So how do you grade the Giants this year? And if they do not win the Division was it a waste of money to get Mc and Longo? And are the Giants going to be buyers or sellers before the trade deadline. So far the year has not been a total waste, so only time will tell what will be remembered for this season.
I would give the Giants a B- on the off-season. They knew they had a window in which to compete. I think they overpaid for Longoria in salary and length of contact. Glad Cutch is a one year deal. No way to account for the injuries. Bum’s was a fluke, as was Longo’s. Shit happens. I love the Hanson pick-up.
Was too early to tell about the sell/buy. If they are buyers, they won’t spend a lot, as it seems they are hell bent on staying under the luxury tax threshold.
They should pick up Bummie’s options the next 2 years, and see where they are when the deal is done. He would more than likely sign a team- friendly type deal that wouldn’t break the bank. If not, oh well, happy trails, muchacho.
As I’ve said, Bummie is giving up a lot of home runs these past couple years. Sure, we ain’t scoring much for him, but he needs to start rolling. Especially against the fucking Pods.
Next year is the last option year, also at 12 mil. They would be ignorant to not pick it up (if they do not trade him), as no way in hell they get a pitcher of his caliber for 12 mil a year.
Not entirely sure what this means, but I saw this on a car at the WC bart station . . .
All I can think of is Fat Bastard: “GET IN MY BELLY!”
Interesting discussion regarding Bumgarner. I’m in the camp of sign/extend him. He’s still only 28. Maybe entice him with a 3 year opt out or something even though it hasn’t worked out the best with Cueto.
Short term, Bumgarner need to perform for any of the long term cheddar to work out. His red ass act doesn’t play when he’s pitching like a #3. Maybe dial it back to just snot rockets for a couple of starts. I don’t know but the BP is on fumes. Someone on the staff needs to step up and eat some innings.
Welcome to the Extend Bum Camp Dirt! Great to have you on board. It ain’t gonna cost you $26 for a brat and a beer at Extend Bum Camp, I’ll tell you that.
Fun Fact: A mini mart on the way to my house sells 25 oz (Not 24!) Rolling Rock cans for $1.69. And there is a good Brooklyn-style pizza joint 2 doors down.
They know me well at both places.
Diggity I’m surprised you’re able to find the time to post at the Flap today what with the Kings Championship Day to contend with. Who do you want them to take and who do you not want and why? I’ll take your answer off the air, thanks
$26 for a brat and a beer, lol. Gal friend of mine originally from Taiwan who is putting 2 kids through college by herself has taken the boys to ATT and I don’t think she spent a dime on food.
Describe “good Brooklyn-style pizza.” By any chance did you and son sample some of same on NYC trip with local tour guide?
This joint has very thin crust and I assume that is Brooklyn-style.
Is Loo the unnamed Tour Guide you speak of? He did not take us to a pizza place, but did take us to the Original Nathan’s Hot Dog stand on Coney Island and a cool local bar there as well.
On our own, we did stumble onto a .99 slice place right next to Steven Colbert theatre that we liked for cheap eats. We figured out quickly that asking for toppings bogs down the line and earns some stink eye from fellow customers. Cheese slices only from that point forward.
If you haven’t been there’ s a new pub across from the ballpark. Pete’s Tavern. Good beer, good grub and a shit-ton of TVs. And a lot less wait for service. The mini corn dogs w/homey mustard are fricking decent.
Bummie needs to show he can stop giving up taters. He seems to be averaging 2 bombs per game these days. His dingers given up have steadily climbed his whole career. 2012 was an outlier as he gave up 23, but all the seasons around that were low teens, Last year works our to 34 given the pace he set before crashing and burning his KTM.
He needs better fastball location rather than just trying to blow people away.
That’s why I let his current deal ride. In 2 years (or even the end of next year) we’ll know a lot more about where he is as a pitcher. If he goes ~25 wins in the next year .5 then we can discuss an extension. But if he’s scuffling around .500, why bother?
I agree on the HRs, but you have to remember, the current is a very small sample size (3 HRs in 17.1 IP).
His lifetime HR/9 is 0.9, and outside of his first year in the majors, and last year, it has never been over 1.0/9. Trending up, yes, but pretty flat over the past five years, outside of last year.
I want the Kings to get Luka Doncic, who I think is the one guy who can possibly develop into a transformational superstar type player. Ayton would be my second choice and Bagley my third. Anyone else and I’m pissed.
I think they will take Bagley. While Doncic is intriguing, I believe Bagley will produce quicker, and that he fills the King’s needs, better. I’ll be very surprised if Alton doesn’t go first.
All I want out of Bumgarner in this start is “A Humm Baby” not a “Bum Baby” start..
With all the young players coming in tough thing to figure is how much they grow and how quickly they can figure out how to improve/how hard they are willing to work at it. Couple years ago I would never had been into Euro guys making it but there are growing number who come into the league and can shoot very well from perimeter.
Saw a lot of Ayton and like him a lot but ultimately I think Bagley could be the better player/higher scorer.
cbs site has warriors in on either G Trent Jr. or Grayson Allen to fil shooter off bench role. Allen’s a guy I can see getting rude awakening to NBA.
not sure if this is behind the Athletic paywall but Blade mentioned this guy having other interests recently…

Speaking of pizza-

If people don’t like the pizza you brought, this wouldn’t be the best response:
read this earlier, right on top of front page of the Chron sport green. Ostler the clueless is obviously late to the party but is this stuff of KNBR talk shows (which I don’t ever listen to)? K and K morning shows?
How long can Giants ignore it/how would adding player affect lux tax?
Also I didn’t see any of yesterday game but sounds like the 2 hits/rbis he did get weren’t exactly crushed.
It came up on Baggs segment this morning. His two hits yesterday were barely out of the infield. The club is basically getting Sandoval for free but can’t make this move? It’s ridiculous.
Duggar’s value is on the defensive side but it’s not like Bochy is going to give him much run so I don’t think looking to him as a replacement for Jackson is much of a solution. Totally on board with Slater for Pence who shouldn’t be occupying a roster spot and Bochy will always rely on despite all evidence saying he’s done. Give him some gift cards for California Adventure and send him on his way.
That Breaking Bad scene is one of my favorites of the whole show. That had me laughing for days.
And yeah, my son is all over Luka Doncic. He’s a beast at a 6’8″ guard and has played at the highest levels of Euro ball and dominated. I’m inclined to agree. The Kings don’t need a quick fix. they need a guy that they can build around. They are 2-3 drafs away from bein g relevant anyway.
Deadspin’s take had me laughing.
https://deadspin.com/the-entire-nba-draft-depends-on-whether-the-kings-screw-1827024497
And, there’s this . . .
Great song, great album. And I saw her in concert in the early 2000s, and liked her performance a lot.
As far as Duggar/Slater goes, fuck to the yes. MINAJ and Pence aren’t doing anything. Platooning Duggar is better than letting him waste his time tearing up Sacto. He’ll get enough LH ABs to keep him sharp.
I don’t follow college hoops much, and I don’t know much about the Euro guy, so I don’t have a big opinion on the Kings’ draft pick. But the more I hear about the Euro guy the more intrigued I’m getting.
Thanks for the article, Chuck.
There’s talk of the Dubs moving up in the draft.
Get over it Melanoma. IMO, your 6 blown saves in 17 chances with the Giants are disrespectful to the game. Also, the problem with baseball being told it’s boring – is probably due to no one being allowed to react to anything. Brinson, a rookie batting .177 had a 95 MPH fastball thrown near his head and proceeded to dust himself off and than line a huge hit which resulted in a come from behind win for a last place team. Yeah, I would be joyous too. Again, get over it and start earning the contract that the Giants “gifted” you.
He kind of looks like Danny Bonaduce.

Man, I didn’t know the Partridge kid was such a bad ass with the nunchaku. Quite cool 🙂
Bill James, on Twitter, talking about Strickland:
“There will be a movie about him. It will be called “Door Hunter”. “
I don’t claim to know what fWAR is, but this is kind of interesting:
“2012-2018
1. Trout – 60.5 fWAR
2. Donaldson – 36 fWAR
3. Mccutchen – 34.6 fWAR
4. Posey – 33.4 fWAR
5. Votto – 33.3 fWAR”
fWAR? Fuck WAR? What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.
The fact that Brinson was laughing tells a lot. It IS a fucking game after all. The kid is a rookie. Strick is supposedly the vet. He acted like the child in the exchange.
Seem to say this often but pads aren’t a very good hitting team. B/R says they are 13th in NL for runs and no better than 14th for walks Ks OB SLG OPS. They are hitting .233 as a team and have 13 fewer bombs than SF.
So couple night games at ATT, keep the ball in yard and runs down. Weekend with 2 1 PM day games weather will heat up so look out. Giants btw have hit 78 bombs and given up 68.
Last year numbers: 128 hit 182 given up. Big improvements from both sides.
I think I recently read the Giants have the best home record in the NL, which surprised me.
that doesn’t stop the Pads from drinking our milkshake though.
It’s easy for Strick to be a bad-ass as he never gets in the box to face high cheese.
I told Garrett, well, that’s what you get sometimes. Piss someone off, they come through.
The crowd was booing their collective asses off at Strick. Deservedly so.
Mariners, as always, when it looks like they might be for real get exposed for the frauds they are after getting swept by the Yanks.
Losing in NY isn’t the end of their season. They have the A’s and Rangers to get fat on.
Mac is right, the M’s are frauds. Nobody should take that team seriously
They could put 6 shells in the chamber and Strickland would still miss his head..
And then he’d yell at the gun.
calling a pinch hit bomb from Mac tonight….
lulz . . . Calling 3 ground outs and a SO if Pence starts. Actually Flav, I think they’re both out of the LU tonight.
Ahh, you called a pinch bomb. Yeah, I’m down with that. Okay, calling a pinch SO for Pence.
i’m calling a Mac bomb every day till he hits one
1. Alen Hanson (S) LF
2. Buster Posey (R) C
3. Andrew McCutchen (R) RF
4. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
6. Pablo Sandoval (S) 3B
7. Joe Panik (L) 2B
8. Gorkys Hernandez (R) CF
9. Madison Bumgarner (R) P
Luca Doncic mom is hot!
I finally figured out what Adam Silver reminds me of…
I was going to say “Nazi concentration camp doctor,” but your comparison works, too.
all these lotto teams freaking and geeking about this shit. Man, Dubs fans just kick back and enjoy watching the minions fight for the scraps. I wonder what brilliance Myers has planned for the second round? Stay tuned….
These things go in cycles. Fans should always appreciate it hugely when great things are happening with their team. The window always closes at some point.
the cubs are fucking worthless. San Diggity, enjoy QS #2.
Huh, Randy Hansen in LF. So our bench is two guys who absolutely positively win’t deliver. Shit. How long will they carry the dead wood?
I think Doncic is going to be really really good.
This is the statue of Junipero Serra (early Spanish missionary in Calif.) that Krukow mentioned yesterday. He compared the statue to umpire Dutch Leonard calling a strike.

Now that’s funny. Years ago someone made a giant football that they put under the finger to look like he was holding for a field goal. It was awesome.
Serra is not considered in a great light anymore because of treatment of Native Americans, and the statue is considered an oddity because of its strange proportions.
The face looks like a precursor to Wallace and Grommet.
Zumie, it wasn’t quite the Crusades, but it was similar . . . Subjugate and assimilate the locals, or be starved out.
It was for the big game in 1981 . . .
Greyson Allen? Really? Didn’t think he’d go in the 1st. The Dukies are going fast . . .
That was heartfelt by Hunter . . . I hope what he just said, he puts into practice. Time will tell . . . I’m glad I was able to see him make that statement to Amy.
His retirement speech?
Not Pence, Strickland.
He could’ve meant Strickland, too.
🙂
Ahhh. Saw the end but didn’t hear any of it.
He seemed very sincere. I know this is like his 4th or 5th chance, but I’m hoping this incident changes him. Again, only time will tell.
Whoa, two great throws.
yeah barehanded pick up by Cutch and Panik guns him down.
Nice D there, boys.
Excellent play!
Whoa-tus…
Kuip . . . “Drop anchor.” Hilarious.
With so many shifts, I get surprised now by groundball singles up the middle.
I’d like to see Bum hit the ball the other way – just once…
There ya go, Bummie.
Kings drafted MB III; I’m cool with it.
Do they do anything that acknowledges their Cincinnati Royal history?
Does The Big O’s jersey hang in the Sacramento rafters?
I don’t think they go back that far. I think they acknowledge Tiny Archibald but it has been about 14 years since I’ve been there.
Don’t forget Rochester.
The Rochester Seagrams (and than Royals) want to know the same thing – did anyone in Cincinnati acknowledge Red Holtzman when he played in Rochester?
Or Al Cervi, Bob Davies, Alex Hannum, Les Harrison, Arnie Risen, Maurice Stokes, Jack Twyman, Bobby Wanzer, Otto Graham, Chuck Connors and Jack McMahon.
All played for Rochester.
Trump is President and an intentional walk to Gorkys. The world has gone mad.
And Whitey’s on the moon…
Does turn LU over again. Does this mean bochy is leaving him in there for the 8th?
I can’t remember last time Giants SP saw 8th.
I don’t think anyone has done it this season.
Can’t let this guy beat you…
Looks like Bum is back
Solid effort still throwing 91 with good off speed location too. Handcuffed Giant killer Myers.
Sets tone for rest of the weekend.
Yeah, baby! Motoring . . .
Hanson is the disruptive force that we thought Noonie should have been…
Runs pretty good for a guy who was carried off the field yesterday…
would’ve been ITP if his kneecap contusion hadn’t slowed him down
Bum is looking extremely sharp. Question – has he thrown any pitches above 91 MPH? I’m doing a couple of other things, so haven’t seen the entire game.
Y+es!
I thought Cueto might have gone 8 this season, but he hasn’t. So this has to be the first one.
why not PRun for Buster? Hundley is avail, right?…
clank.
many bloops have fallen for the Giants this week, some errors, some windblown “hits”–wtf, that third run could be crucial in the 9th!
Pirela essentially has lost the game for the Friars, with his inept base running and fielding.
Tomorrow we’ll hear about Posey’s upcoming thumb surgery after that awkward slide…
Up 3-0, let Bum finish it…
That was pretty dumb, Cutch…
WTF is Cutch doing?
No friggin clue.
Trying to steal 3rd so he can score on a wild pitch?…
Cueto, a guy apparently that was one step from the knife for TJ surgery, is going to toss 40 pitches in rehab this Saturday. Seems too soon back to me. The elbow ligament can heal that fast?…
