A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bum’s Back

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 22, 2018

MadBum goes 8 shutout, Melancon closes the door with a clean 9th–just how Sabes drew it up—15 months ago.

Low scoring, well pitched games as I thought it would be. Super insightful comment here:

….a good reminder that…

No, you can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometime you find
You get what you need……

I don’t know, but I am feeling it in the air. It’s coming….

Nice to see Bum dominate and Melancon have good inning, 3 dribblers one of which snuck through and a K as he is regaining strength and health. Who closes is less important than who is healthy and throwing well.
    .
Smrdz Cueto hopefully have regained health too. Cueto may need 3 rehab starts per Hank, Smrdz threw 70 some pitches and allowed 4 hits 2 runs in 4 innings at Sac. He said earlier this is best he has felt, fwiw.

Yes as Mac/Unc said first time all year Giants SP went 8. Great start to series.

Good to see us throttle the Pads as they have been a thorn in our side for years now. This will hopefully be the sweep we were hoping for with the Marlins. Tie to make hay while we can. With Cueto dodging the knife and nearing his return, we could be getting ready for a run here.

Smarglebargle I’m not as confident about, but if he can keep the ball in the yard and find his command, hey, that’s gravy.

Mac has to hit one eventually, amirite? I’m calling Pence pulling splinters out of his ass all night.

Forget the rehab starts. He can rehab here. Maybe one. If it goes well come on down..

At this point I can do without Smardzxxx. 5 innings and 2 bombs is his MO. Give me Suarez or Rodriguez, they can do that, and getting better…

Close, Charlie. 30 HRs to 32 BB, last year. He did have a 1.136 WHIP last year. You cannot eat that salary if he is healthy and pitching well, IMO. He isn’t going anywhere once activated.

If he is pitching well at the deadline, there may be interest from other clubs, but Giants would have to eat some salary, I’m sure (18 mil per through 2020). He also has a limited trade clause where there are only eight teams to which he could be traded.

Nightengale blasts the state of MLB in USA Today this weekend. Manfred is going to be all over this article.
The article says the pitch clock is basically a done deal (I don’t mind) and the NL will be getting the DH within 5 years (I do mind.)
We all agree there are some things we don’t like about launch-angle baseball.

That new board at China Basin, just to the right of the scoreboard showing distance, launch angle and exit velocity after every ball hit in the air is almost as interesting as the radar gun reading. It’s ephemeral, too, like the gun show. People in the stands who don’t see the stats before they vanish ask each other “how far was that one?” and “what was the velocity on that?” Bloops and broken bat wounded ducks make for some funny moments.

Although the score was only 3-0, I never felt like the Giants were not in control. Speaking of control, Madbum had outstanding control and pinpoint accuracy. I don’t think I have seen him look better in quite awhile. However, last night I asked if his velocity got above 91? Does anyone know? Care (if it didn’t)?

I guess my biggest concern is that his velocity doesn’t get better; but perhaps as Loo indicated (I think he said it), Madbum has never been a power pitcher.

No opinion on Alphabet. With him velocity does matter – as Flav indicated – so hopefully he does much better than he did before his DL assignment.

Last night he had his perfect umpire, giving him a wide plate for right-handed hitters. Basically the Tom Glavine strikezone last night. Bum was a happy camper last night. But to be fair, he consistently hit Posey’s glove and his stuff had good movement.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 22, 2018 at 4:07 pm

We all know that it isn’t all about velocity. For Maddux it was not important:

“ Maddux relied on his command, composure, and guile to outwit hitters. Though his fastball touched 93 mph in his early years, his velocity steadily declined throughout his career, and was never his principal focus as a pitcher. By the end of his career, his fastball averaged less than 86 mph.“

Depressing article shared by Zumiee (thanks for sharing Zum). The chart showing more strikeouts than hits is especially telling . . . An investment chart refers to this as a “death cross.” The death cross can occur in individual stocks, within various funds, and when examining indices and averages. Considered a bearish signal within the market, a death cross occurs when the short-term, 50-day moving average, also called a price trend, crosses below the long-term, 200-day moving average. In reference to baseball, this is showing a very “bearish” signal for baseball. Sad because there are no easy answers on how to increase baseball’s popularity. I know one thing – I do not want the DH or any other type of quick fixes and I also wish, that they would come up with a uniform baseball specification, where you did not have “rabbit ball” and “dead ball” eras. How difficult is that?

Ironically, as bad as the author thinks baseball is getting, I personally hate the current state of affairs with the NFL (injuries and rules directed toward increasing offense) and NBA (lack of competition). Those two sports lost me years ago.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 22, 2018 at 10:32 am

All three sports, in a sense, have a problem with fans being more knowledgeable and savvy. More fans are like: “OK, my team is in tanking mode for a couple years for high draft picks. Cool. I’ll check back in a couple of years from now.”
My wife did that with the Braves. She didn’t want to watch the Braves tank for a few years, and she chose to watch other sports that interest her, in particular soccer and tennis. Now that the Braves are legit again, she’s watching them again. She’s not a bandwagon fan, but she didn’t feel she was obligated to watch the entire tear-down rebuild. She watched them trade away favorites of hers, like Kimbrell and McCann. Fortunately the rebuild eventually worked, but there was no guarantee that it would. And there’s still no guarantees for this season, as to making the playoffs.

Nothing in that article is particularly new or groundbreaking. K’s are up? Big deal. Batters are taking a lot of pitches? So! Bemoaning the stats? Huh? Ignore them. Some teams suck? That’s on the owners. The league has at least tried to get the owners to put their gobs of money into their teams, but you can’t mandate brains and smarts and solid drafts/FA signings. These aren’t the problems with the game.

The problem with the game is the fact that Manfred Mann wants to fuck with it to make it more appealing.

Fucking with it will piss off the fans he already has and lose them. Lose them and then you will see the death spiral of the game.

Chuck, I see your points, but the owners are seeing that attendance is down 6% this year, and they’re fretting.
And a lot of the things in the article are not new to us, hardcore baseball fans, but the average person flipping open their USA Today and seeing a cover story in the Sports section headlined “The Awful State of Baseball” makes an impression. Plus Manfred and the owners are grinding about articles like that.

About 1/3 of the plays now are HR, K, or W.
The fielders are only involved in 2/3 of the plays.
I’m kind of tripping on something I heard Dave Roberts say several weeks ago when the Dodgers offense was struggling so much. He said “our offense is walks and HRs.” Just flat-out said it. At that time they weren’t doing that very much. Now they’re doing that a lot again. The Dodgers make no pretense of trying to string hits together for rallies. They load their lineup with HR-hitters and rely on intimidating pitchers into getting walks.
I think of people inventing and playing baseball in the early 1800s. A big part of baseball was always about running the bases and fielders trying to make plays. Hanson’s triple was so exciting last night. There just isn’t as much of that in baseball anymore.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 22, 2018 at 12:40 pm

Another exciting play was the relay from Cutch to Panik to Posey for the out. Cutch grabbing the bounce barehanded was the key. Plays like that translate to TV better than HRs. HRs are great things, but they’re not actually that great in real-time on TV. They’re better appreciated on replay camera shots like the splash-cam.

I’m not making any predictions on their W-L record, but one thing’s for certain, when the final game is over or the last healthy player is carted off the field, they’ll be wearing Giants uniforms.
I overheard this story at the barbershop, not sure how much if any of it’s true (Holler swears by his source, Mo thinks it’s bullshit.), either way, it sickens me.

I see 2 issues: 1. Children not playing the game; and, 2. Teams refusing to compete and worse, lying about it.

Here’s an article that backs up my first point . . . https://www.mother.ly/parenting/baseball-is-losing-popularity-with-kids-so-are-most-team-sports

Regarding the 2nd point, MLB’s economic system actually makes it feasible for a team to lose a lot of games and make money. Teams have figured this out, which is why so many teams have low payrolls this year. The free agent market was extremely soft this offseason, and teams have increasingly pocketed the savings. This hurts competition, which hurts credibility.

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Sunday that the Pirates’ ability to spend money is related to their attendance. That’s a similar refrain from the Pirates but it’s a flat-out lie and fans have finally stopped buying it. The Pirates now have a credibility problem, but again, they aren’t the only team.

There are 16 teams at or below .500 right now. The Reds, Marlins, Orioles, Rangers and Royals are all likely to lose 100 games or more. It’s only June, and the American League is essentially down to the winner of the East and the Mariners. The National League has the opposite issue, with an abundance of mediocre teams still in the race.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 22, 2018 at 1:20 pm

      Interesting article; thanks!
Yeah, more and more young folks would far rather play with their electronic devices than run around playing sports and getting all sweaty. The sports-playing would be healthier for them, though. And it does help create fans for pro sports.

  18. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 22, 2018 at 1:25 pm

I do think there are a lot of older fans watching pro sports that aren’t appreciated much because they aren’t going to be big spenders on the stuff that’s in the commercials. That probably includes me. 🙂

The baby boomers are the last bastion of baseball purist fans, I’d guess. it’s hard to figure out because the people I know that watch baseball appreciate it for what it is, not what these clowns are trying to make it. My 21 year old son (and both my daughters) gets it, but there are a lot of kids that don’t understand the game, the pace and the strategy. Which is why putting the DH in the National League will drive more people away than bring people in. .

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 22, 2018 at 2:11 pm

Manfred would argue (I guess) that he just wants to restore MLB to what it was when we grew up watching it (and more often listened to it on the radio), faster-paced with more balls in play.

The’ kids are playing video games’ spiel is just that. A spiel. There are tons of kids that play sports and run around and do shit. Any given town has 150 little league teams. And fields. And participation. Every suburb I’ve lived in has had hundreds of kids in every sport my kids played in. Soccer, softball. little league, tennis, golf, you name it, there were more than enough kids playing. It may be only lower middle class to rich folks, but the game is being played by plenty of kids everywhere.

If there’s anything driving people away from the game it’s the fact that tickets are $40.00 a pop. A dog is $8.00, a beer is $12.00, and parking is $40.00. A family of 4 costs around $500.00 for decent seats at your local ballpark.

Sure the owners have to pay their players, but these guys are raping the fans for everything from water to sunflower seeds to a goddamn $18.00 crab sandwich.

I stopped going when one day the girl cutting my hair was using a clipper on my neck below my chin line and the damn thing was hurting me, pulling the short hairs or something. I told her “stop that, you’re hurting me”. She paused, then kept going. Same result, same request, louder. She kept going. The last time the thing was really hurting so I jumped from the chair and yelled “STOP THAT — YOU”RE HURTING ME !” The whole shop went silent and stared at me. Owner/manager came over and I yelled at him that I was done, your cutter won’t stop hurting my neck after 3X asking. I said I’m leaving and not coming back, and left. Never returned. Now I get my haircut in a small shop from a dude that has to be about 83. He takes his sweet time, talks his ass off about his time in the military, etc., and cuts my hair damn well. Okay, I wasn’t able to get past the pay wall, but I found something better, i.e., a synopsis of the WSJ article with the most pertinent parts. It states specifically that all data is from this article. Additionally, the time period in which the study was conducted (All data is from 2008 to 2012):

    Here is the link . . . https://www.athleticbusiness.com/high-school/youth-participation-in-team-sports-on-the-decline.html

      Thanks for tracking that down.
One of the commenters on the article said, regarding a surge of interest in lacrosse: “parents will gravitate to where they think they have the best chance.” Some parents are chasing lacrosse scholarships for their kids.

De nada . . . By the by, I haven’t tried this with the WSJ, but I get an email synopsis of the New York Times, where I am allowed 10 articles/columns a month. This is how you get around that:

        1. Highlight the article or column headline.
        2. Cut and paste and/or do a google search of the headline.
        3. Click on the article via your Google search results.

To the best of my knowledge, this works on the Washington Post too (as well as other dailies and periodicals), if you have an email account with them (a paid subscription is not necessary).

Also, the primary concern of children not playing sports or not being active is what Zumiee and AK stated earlier – that children obesity will result in an adult sedentary lifestyle and they will probably have health issues.

Of course, MLB, NBA, NFL, and other sports owners know that a child not playing their sport, likely means they will not attend or watch their sport either when they become adults. So yes, they should be concerned if the goal is to make money.

I have a really good barber in Oakland. 25 years gone and a cut is still $16. He won’t accept appointments. Guys line up and wait. He gives out free PBRs. He also puts blues on the box (he plays the harp in his off time), and he loves to discuss legal issues. He can’t use his scissors while he’s busy talking and gesturing with his hands, so it takes a while for him to finish dealing with my dwindling mane, but he’s really good at his craft. I’m sure he once mentioned exotic WW II liquor in Los Angeles, but iirc it had something to do with Disneyland and the bar built underground, next to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Most of his stories are more personal. I’ll bet it’s a hundred times now I’ve heard the tale about Charlie Musselwhite inviting him on stage to jam with the band.

Late to the discussion on the state baseball, I think that unca 1:53 post just about nailed, families today have to think about what there budget can afford. Now you are thinking of going to a game $500 out of the vacation budget, young kids are told baseball or Disneyland? I think most of us know which one kids are going to take. And when you look at the other two sports baseball is still the cheapest to pay for.

Think the drop off in sports participation has lot to do with increased specialization and expensive travel teams.
when I was in HS late 60s, leading b-ball scorer was football QB and other guys played all 3 major sports.
    Not anymore.

Goes for girls too. V ball softball soccer b-ball club teams turn it into year round stuff. If you aren’t involved tough to fit in.
I know a guy who is asst to local powerhouse HS b-ball at private school. Their kids are already playing AAU tourneys, from middle school to HS age. August only month they get off and schools start earlier now too.

SanDawg, you mean Pierce St. Annex on Fillmore in Cow Hollow? Back in late ’90s, I lived right around the corner on little Pixley Street, and my flat backed up to the back of that bar. It was always so f-ing noisy at night from the thump-thump (not to be confused with womp womp) of the jukebox. My best memory of the place was stopping by and plopping myself down on a barstool in front of the TV just in time to see Brian Johnson’s big homer. 2nd best memory was the night a bar fight spilled out onto Fillmore Street and one of the bouncers pulled out a gun and shot it into the air to “calm the crowd”, resulting in half a dozen cop cars, some arrests, and Gavin Newsome walking across the street from Balboa Cafe to offer the bar owner a sum he couldn’t refuse at that point. The place has been (or had been, not sure about now) a rather upscale bar since that time…..

    • sandog's avatar sandog said, on June 22, 2018 at 10:36 pm

Ha Ha…I love it! I think the shot fired in the air is an under utilized tactical move.
Pierce St, Balboa Cafe, and Golden Gate Grill were kind of the holy trinity of trendy bars back in the late 80’s. Don’t sleep on the Desert Moon either.
