A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Who Would You Target?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 26, 2018

The Brewers have the second most wins in the NL? Not sure what that says about the NL. I’m not that worried about Milwaukee and I think D-Rod will pitch well enough for us to win tonight. Of course, our hitters look tired and ineffective lately so that could be an issue.

Bill Laskey, who I usually don’t like because he spends most of his show covering for the completely incompetent Vida Blue, brought up a good question on the radio last night: Who would the Giants realistically go after at the trade deadline? They don’t have too many bullets to fire. And if they did fire them, who would they target? The bullpen has been very good this year. Same with the starting pitching. I guess you could go after an outfielder but they can’t even seem to get Slater on the field so that tells me they don’t really want to add on there.

Longo coming back, Panik too. Doesn’t it seem like even if the Giants had a bullet they’d be willing to fire they wouldn’t do it because they don’t have any holes they are desperate to fill?

This would actually be perfect. But how hamstrung will the Giants be about $$$? Jones is a free agent after this season, he’s owned about 7 mil left on his 2018 deal….

yeah thought about this guy for couple years. Seems like the perfect vet fit for Giants mindset–just wonder how well he would hit here. O’s obviously not asking a lot for anyone beyond prospects.

Longo and Panik are couple guys who haven’t had the seasons Giants expected going in. One will help them vs. LHP, the other won’t.

Looking back at last 2 series, Giants were only barely out bombed. Vs. A’s they gave up no HRs in either of first 2 games and then 4 in the last one (to just 2 guys, 3 off Cueto) and they hit 4 of their own. M’s hit 2 in 2 games, SF 1, by Pence of all people. Most of the games were decided by walks that came around to score.

sure it’s disappointing that most of their hitters including the C are not hitting as many HRs as we’d like but the fact the pitching is limiting them from other teams is significant gain over last season.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 26, 2018 at 8:01 am

And they still can’t hit. They’re 3-5 in their past 8 against the A’s and M’s. With any decent hitting at all they’d likely have won 5 or 6 of those 8. At what point does this franchise start building a competent offensive team? Parts of the pitching have been good, others have not been good. They’re 9th in the 15-team NL in team ERA. That’s not great, that’s mediocre. Even so, with good hitting, something this team hasn’t had in years, they’d be in a lot better position than they are now.

In the WS years their pitching was not middle of the pack, it was utterly dominant, which is why they won despite less than stellar offensive numbers. That’s not the case anymore and it’s not likely to be again anytime soon. Personally, I’m sick of these anemic offensive teams and the pathetic excuses the Giants proffer to give them a pass. Boch needs to strongly consider retirement and Evans needs to be shown the door. He sucks.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 26, 2018 at 8:11 am

lol Pence and Jones are having the same seasons? Adam Jones would be a great addition to the team. Him in left, Duggar in CF and Cutch in RF. Make a run this summer, see what happens

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 26, 2018 at 8:16 am

No, just pissy. Jones is clearly better, albeit barely given the disparity in number of games played. The guy has 38 ribbies in 96 games. That’s pretty bad. Posey-esque, dare I say.

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 26, 2018 at 8:17 am

And what would they have to give up to get him? I’d rather keep Slater than trade him for Jones, if only because he’s younger.

  5. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 26, 2018 at 7:47 am

Jones will be 33 years old next week and he’s having a mediocre season. He can stay in Baltimore as far as I’m concerned.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 26, 2018 at 8:01 am

we only need him for 2 months. And getting him out of Baltimore might do a lot for his motivation. I’m guessing things have gotten rather staid around there….

  6. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 26, 2018 at 7:52 am

Affeldt on KNBR now, saying SF needs a RH home run hitter, even if Longoria adds more bopperage when he come back, and there is no guarantee of that coming back from a broken hand. Also, confirming Posey just isn’t healthy, has no power…

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 26, 2018 at 8:18 am

Why do I think it’ll end up being Adam Duvall? Anything at this point would be better than the limp noodle gang.

This feels like 2008 where we had a team with little power that Bochy refused to manufacture runs with.

  10. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 26, 2018 at 8:23 am

Duvall would come here and go straight into the tank. I think he’s highly overrated to begin with.

  11. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 26, 2018 at 8:25 am

To LJ’s point this is why I’d trade pitching to acquire hitting, either vet or prospects. Giants farm gets much maligned but the guys brought up this year to help pitching have done very well. Less sure about the hitters, tho Slater hopefully is a keeper. But he’s not a HR threat and Duggar isn’t either.
Cutch hit 28 bombs last year, stuck on 10 right now. He’ll walk and SF will need a replacement who is lot better player than Gorks.

True, there really isn’t one position that management is desperate to change, so it’s tough to peg a possible move. Evans is incapable of pulling off something surprising and interesting, but it would be cool if Sabes pulled off something like that summer trade with the White Sox, ballsy… and of course, Williams for Kent et al. I had just moved to SF when that one happened, what was the discussion about the team at that time? Did anyone see something like that coming?

Snarkk’s post at the end of the last thread compared the Giants and the A’s. The A’s are just across the Bay, having a loosey-goosey fun season with a line-up full of power. Hard not to be envious of their talent.
The Giants do have Rodriguez and Suarez showing us something this season. They’ve been a great story this season.
But that Giants offense….struggling for consistency. Struggling for power.

  15. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 26, 2018 at 9:00 am

Mm 2014 pitching wasn’t really dominant, more middle of road 7th in league (Cain and Lincecum 4.00+ ERAs), lot like the hitting that year. Pablo got hot in playoffs, Craw and Belt won early games with bombs and of course bum dominated. guys like Ishi Blanco and Perez were in OF.

In order for Giants to get to middle of pack for runs today they’d have to improve hitting quite a bit. Don’t see that happening in house and Longo Panik won’t do much to move needle either. Hopefully someone gets hot and brings rest of LU along with them.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 26, 2018 at 9:22 am

It was in the playoffs, mostly because of Bum and the pen, but that was definitely the tail-end their run of dominant team pitching. Timely hitting was always the hallmark of those offensive clubs.

  16. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 26, 2018 at 9:39 am

How about Archer???? We can trade Stratton, Blach 2-3 other arms (Moronta?) and throw in a Williamson and another non-current big league bat. Smardjam for the bullpen permanently…

  17. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 26, 2018 at 10:14 am

To Flav’s point in the last paragraph of this tread, unless they can free up significant money (think Smardj, which is highly inlikely), I do not see them getting someone who will make a huge impact with the inconsistent offense. So, I won’t be surprised if they stand pat.

If they do get someone, they need someone with some pop…probably an OFer, and again, in reading the tea leaves, that just does not seem too likely. Plus, as someone else mentioned, I don’t think Booby has the balls or competence to make something of that magnitude happen.

  18. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 26, 2018 at 10:24 am

Hard to know who the club should pursue. I guess Jones would be good but keep in mind that he’s played mostly CF this year and Bochy will just roll out an all geriatric OF of Pence, Jones & McCutchen. Other than the supposedly untouchables, who’s even going to get any kind of value in return? Watson, Dyason, Holland and maybe Stickland? Getting anything in return for Samardzija is Room B nonsense.

obviously he’d need to bump production. It’s not the healthiest situation in Baltimore, I imagine a lot of those dudes are just sleep walking the year out.
And, I don’t think he’d want to come here and have to fight the park with his pending free agency. He’d much more prefer staying in the AL and going to Boston or some place like that.

The 9 extractions were just gradual over the years. First the wisdom teeth had to go, then one by one each back tooth directly in front of them. Today #19 (as your dad would refer to it) departed. It had already had a root canal and a crown so there was nothing left to do but yank it. (TMI yet?) It had been pulling away from the gum on its own and although not painful it was slightly infected and basically a little time bomb. Cutch is as damn near worthless as MINAJ at this point. 5 RBIs in July. And his defense has fallen off a cliff.

Like I’ve said before, I loved the Melancon signing and I’m pulling hard for the guy, but he doesnt have much out there. A 91 mph heater, a curve, and guts and guile. Has to hit his spots or it aint gonna be pretty.

Catwoman = Julie Newmar now well into her 80s. Web photos show she looks pretty good for that age.
Not as good as 50+ years ago in that leather suit, though…

Why is he pitching again in high leverage situation in the 8th?
No excuses of seeing eye crap. He’s paid to get outs. And, he’s not getting outs.

The galling thing is just that, Boch sticking with Pence while Slater sits, Melonhead, Smargle, and now Cutch is hologramming himself to oblivion as we speak.

The worst case scenario is playing itself out.

  65. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 26, 2018 at 9:44 pm

  66. sandog's avatar sandog said, on July 26, 2018 at 9:49 pm

This might be a little unrealistic, but I sometimes think Slater could develop into a Lou Piniella caliber of player. Give you good at bats, hit .280, good fielder, smart player. Good type of player to have in our ballpark as presently situated.

Keep sipping that wine Boch, don’t worry about sending your fastest runner (Hanson) in a 1 run game late to scoring position..

  73. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 26, 2018 at 10:10 pm

    and let Hanson steal 2nd,,
They won’t score now for sure with Pence up, such a waste..
