fell in/out of sleep but did see 12th, Gorks bomb insurance bloops and Smith dominating myers et al.
Gorks is 4 for 24, but 2 of the hits are important timely bombs. July he is 16 for 75 .213 with .644 OPS, but 3 bombs.
Also dropped ball that hit him in the glove last night and fumbled the hit that tied the game.

why wouldn’t SF try to work out deal for Cutch to a team with injuries in OF, particularly in AL?

Pads sure fell apart. Agree with SD, kinda sucks to see all giants fans there. that shot showing all them standing up back of Giants dugout cheering Smith to get last strike (great curve/offspeed) was weird. Use to hate to see that from transplant Yanks or BoSox fans in Oakland. Didn’t like it when Cubs were here either.

Right? Cutch on the block! Wow…will be interesting to see what goes down, today.

Gorkys Fucking Hernandez! Squeeze the Juice!

Big tip of the cap to all you Flappers who made it till the end…especially all you right coasters. I get up really early and hit it after Moranta closed the 7th.

Agree with xoot, Gorks needs to play every day until he hits a dry spell…shitty BA be damned. I was checking out the recap, and Gorks crushed that fucking ball! Damn.

Also saw the Posey bloop that got an insurance run. Take ‘em how you can get ‘em.

One thing I read that blew me away was that Holland leads the club in Ks and IP. I have all season long thought the dude was invaluable, but this really cements it. Holland is also a proponent of keeping the club together for the stretch this year and going for it. I agree. Fuck it, let’s go for it! Holland has to get some serious consideration for the Willie Mac award, IMO.

OK…let’s win today and have a happy flight to The Valley of the Sun.

After it’s all said and done Gorky will probably lead the team in Home Runs, who in their right mind would of predicted that??
Especially since he didn’t have a bomb last year.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 31, 2018 at 8:16 am

our biggest problem is that we have one guy with an OPS over .800 and he’s on the DL (as usual)

  4. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 31, 2018 at 8:23 am

Still only 5 back of WC as AZ pen gave up 4 runs last 3 innings and they lost at home to Rangers, ouch. Giants go into AZ next for 4 this weekend. Bum vs. Greinke Thursday.
Didn’t realize it but Pads now have worst record in the NL at 42-66.
Brewers spanked LA 5-2 in the Latrine and knocked Maeda out early. Machado homers.. in a losing effort.

Other than selling high on Watson, Holland and maybe Hernandez and extracting something for McCutchen the club doesn’t have much to offer. With Belt coming back in 5 days who could stomach an OF of Williamson, Duggar, Slater with Shaw (who has 22hrs) at 1b?

  6. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 31, 2018 at 9:10 am

I do not want to see the team be sellers. You just don’t know what could happen. I know that whatever the fuck it is, even if they flame the fuck out down the stretch, I want to see them make a run. Fuck it…stand and fight…and then deal with restructuring snd rebuilding in the off-season.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 31, 2018 at 9:33 am

This team is a victim of its own inertia. This reminds me some of 2016 when the whole team got hurt, played well, and when everyone got healthy, they tanked. Led by Pence. At least we won’t have that to worry about.

It just seems that when one guy gets healthy, (Longo) someone (Belt) goes down. Panik needs to get off the schneid or they should just plug in Hanson. Slater needs to play all the time. Cutch? Fuck him until he actually does something other than lollygag out there. He should have had a double on the bloop and jogged it into a single. He then misread the popup that dropped and was thrown out at 2nd. His defense sucks, so those saying we are raising the white flag by trading him are mistaken. He’s doing nothing to deserve his spot in the lineup offensively, defensively or on the base paths.

The pitching is frankly phenomenal with very little contribution from the 5 guys pegged to be the opening day rotation. DRod is 5-1! Bummie seems to be settling in fine, but Smargle and Cueto are dust, Stratton is bouncing around, Blach is doing OK as the long guy and the pen minus Melonhead is nails. Moronta is a revelation. He needs to be the 8th inning guy pronto.

We should be winning more. It’s all on the hitting, and frankly, Cutch isn’t bringing enough to offset his being traded (lqtm). If someone ina a bandbox stadium wants him (NYY, Boston), go for it. It may be worth their while. Shit, even Cutch could reach the green monster,.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 31, 2018 at 9:41 am

If he were traded, in less than a week it would be “Cutch who?”
The guy’s key moment was that walk off in the 3rd game or whatever. After that, totally forgettable. His defense is horrendous for the size of his contract. And, enough of the excuses he’s hitting it hard, just not falling. For 2/3 of the season? There’s still time, trade him …

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 31, 2018 at 9:59 am

When guys like D’Naurd or whatever the fuck his name is and GorkHead are mashing bombs and ‘Cutch and Longo and Pence and Posey and Crawford are just fiddle-de-dooing around it makes you not think twice about trading a guy like CUtch if nothing else for some salary relief

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 31, 2018 at 10:09 am

OK on Cutch. If we can get value, giddy the fuck up. I just don’t want to see the team be full-blown sellers. Whether it is with or without Cutch, I just want to see them load-up best they can (given the financial constraints), and fucking go for it.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 31, 2018 at 10:14 am

there will be zero value for Cutch. We’ll just get rid of the rest of his contract. For the team they save some dough and that makes them happy. We get to watch a younger guy play–a guy who will produce about the same (or more) than Cutch

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 31, 2018 at 9:57 am

Yeah, i just think it’s too funny that people think us trading him is our white flag moment. That may just be how the national press would characterize the trade, but Jesus, watching him day-to-day, he’s going through the motions. Nothing about him impresses me.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 31, 2018 at 10:03 am

Yeah, I don’t get that either. Jettisoning and replacing both Pence and McCutchen would be addition by subtraction.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 31, 2018 at 10:11 am

As I mentioned in reply to Charlie, if they can get value, or even just salary relief for Cutch, go for it. And I do not see that as waving the white flag.

We all have said we would love to off Pence, for quite some time, but good luck with that.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 31, 2018 at 10:19 am

  13. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 31, 2018 at 11:24 am

I’m worried Bochy may roll Strickland right back into the closer’s spot, even though Smith is dealing. It’d be just like him. I say leave Smith where he is, move Moronta up to the 8th inning with Watson, let Strick have the 7th and deal Melanoma for the aforementioned bag of (soiled) balls and Dodge Dart. None of this will happen, of course. Bochy will stick with “his guys.”

In the history of ATT, how many successful home run hitters have we had not named Barry Bonds or Jeff Kent?
Has anyone besides those guys ever hit even 30 bombs in a year playing at ATT?
Please tell me I’m forgetting some dudes and the answer to both of those questions is not zero.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 31, 2018 at 11:45 am

Pence hit 27 and Huff hit 26. don’t think anyone else has matched or topped those.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 31, 2018 at 11:52 am

Aurelia had 27, I think, for Team Juice in the early 2000s.

      • sandog's avatar sandog said, on July 31, 2018 at 11:56 am

That is wild. Really surprised that all the guys on here (not you Willie) who talk about how essential the home run is aren’t screaming for ballpark redesign along with me.
I’m actually not one of those “its all about homers” guys myself, but I do think it hurts our team that our park is so bad for power hitting.

  15. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 31, 2018 at 11:48 am

Guy on mlbtr blog said something along lines of “you never know who will help you.” Giants can put a bunch of guys in that category alone, from Cody Ross to Ishi yada yada. Perez Blanco and Morse were playing OF last time they won. No one wanted Burrell or Uribe either.

Yeah, 2000 was the first season at AT&T.
And we all remember that first game, Elster of the Dodgers hit 3 HRs in the game, and everyone thought the ballpark was going to be a bandbox. Wrong!

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 31, 2018 at 12:10 pm

  17. sandog's avatar sandog said, on July 31, 2018 at 12:03 pm

So nobody has hit 30 in a season at ATT since Barry in 2004. That’s a long time.
I wonder if any other park has a streak like that.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 31, 2018 at 12:07 pm

I betcha Baer is starting to weaken just a little bit on ballpark change. His DNA is all about marketing. He could market the team hitting more HRs.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 31, 2018 at 12:10 pm

It’s gotten real hard to market the team lately as championship caliber. The three championships are incredible things the fans will always cherish, but each year it gets harder to market off of that only.

  18. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 31, 2018 at 12:17 pm

I am not all crazy about bringing in the fences. I think the top priority in any changes to the yard is to get the damned bullpens off the field of play. If they did bring in the fences, I would prefer that it be modest.

Hey Zume – not only could Baer market the more HRs, but if done correctly, they could add a few more seats, too.

  19. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 31, 2018 at 12:23 pm

I wonder if Baer would feel differently about moving the fences in if he didn’t have Sabean and Bochy to deal with (2 guys who definitely side on the *pitching and defense* approach to building a team). Here’s the deal, you can still build a team with pitching and defense AND hitting if you move the fences in. In fact, the defense would probably get a little better just by moving the fences in.
Until that happens, guys like Harper or Stanton signing with the Giants is a total fucking pipe dream. Those guys are NEVER coming here. The plan should be to draft hitters and force them to play at AT&T but our scouting dept apparently can’t do that. Hopefully they got lucky with Bart……

  20. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 31, 2018 at 12:24 pm

I’m not sure why there is such a hate on for McCutchen. He leads the team in Runs scored, he’s tied for 1st in RBIs and Doubles, He’s second on the team in Hits, tied for 2nd in Triples and tied for 3rd on the team for HRs. He isn’t as quick as he once was and the numbers aren’t the All Star caliber numbers he’s put up in the past but he isn’t the reason for us playing .500 ball.
If the Yanks or Indians want to make a trade, by all means do it. If the $4 mil savings on the rest of his contract makes 2019 better, great but I’m not looking forward to watching a platoon of Pence, Blanco, Williamson and sometimes Slater to finish out the season.

IMO, having a Starting staff of guys who would be a number 4 or 5 on other teams has been the problem. Yes by the most part they’ve pitched outta their heads but other than Baby Pudge, it seems to me our starting five start getting shaky around the 4th or 5th inning and that has to put additional strain on the Pen. We had two top of the rotation pitchers go down as well as a guy considered a solid number three and all three of them innings eaters. To start having to get guys up and throwing in the Pen around the 5th or 6th inning almost every game has to add a lot of wear. When I think about our staff this year, it’s a wonder to me how we are even at .500.

Cutch = In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. Leading the Giants in RBI’s is like leading the government in indictments. Or like Belt leading the team with 18 HRs despite missing the last 2 months of the season last year. Cutch is 50th in RBIs with 43. He projects out to 15 bombs and 64 RBIs. Meh. And his defense blows hard. I’d rather see Mac and Slater fight it out for next year.

If they could have gotten anything, they should have gotten it. He ain’t coming back besides.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 31, 2018 at 1:31 pm

Nothing against him tho he hasn’t played up to my expectations based on what he did last year. And it would be cool to see him finish season and maybe lot more with a contender on waiver deal.

Just wonder if the sea change playing at ATT is a factor. He’s played in NL Central his whole career in cities like Cincy STL MIL and the windy, all hot and humid good hitting yards during entire summer. Here it’s 50s and windy at mid week night games. Got a feeling he’d do lot better elsewhere.

Like it or not this is what the club’s transition plan will be over the next few years – roll with their overvalued guys, make incremental trades that might improve the club this year or the next and shed salary at the end of the season when contracts end. Personally I’m bullish on the system’s ability to fill around Posey, Crawford, Belt and I guess Longoria but that’s just me.

Judge is out at least 3 weeks, Jacoby’s injured as well, their OF is shaky at best!!

Where the hell is Hanson? Did I miss something? Did he hologram himself?

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 31, 2018 at 2:44 pm

Too much speed for Bochy to play him..

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 31, 2018 at 2:49 pm

Bochy doesn’t manage for speed, even when he has it. When he’s away, the game is managed much differently under Meulens or Wotus. They take some chances when the cat’s away…

  48. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 31, 2018 at 2:46 pm

He hasn’t played in a few days it seems. DRock is rolling . . .

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 31, 2018 at 3:02 pm

Hanson in the offseason needs to take about 20K ground balls at 3rd, SS, and 2nd each, and work on all his footwork and throws…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 31, 2018 at 3:04 pm

Yeah, but he’s more exciting than anyone else on the team, shitty fielding or not.

Have to score on a passed ball like that. WTF is Longoria daydreaming about banging his wife while on the basepaths??

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 31, 2018 at 3:13 pm

Did the same thing yesterday, or the day before. Exact same. WTF ? Giants are expert at blowing scoring chances….

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 31, 2018 at 3:17 pm

That’s fucking twice Short on brains 🧠 Longo has done that this week!!!

There’s never any one reason why a baseball team is good or bad, but McCutchen is way off his career numbers and was brought in to bolster the offense of a club that lost 98 games. He’s barely moved the needle and his defense has been inconsistent, something he’s won GG’s for in the past. No one here *hates* Andrew McCutchen, but he is the source of a lot of frustration and deservedly so.

How some people are not frustrated by him is what’s surprising.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 31, 2018 at 4:20 pm

Being frustrated about our offense, I agree with. Being frustrated with our offense because of McCutchen, I don’t. So we disagree.

“Giants were strategic buyers and sellers”
That’s an Orwellian statement for the day. Buy and sell nothing, then say you were a buyer and seller.

  62. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on July 31, 2018 at 3:57 pm

Pads should load the bases, that’s the best way to keep the Giants from scoring.
