A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Well, we’re back home. Probably ready to go on a nice little run of wins to get us right back in this bad boy. That is, assuming Buster made it off the plane alive. This is what I think about these days when I think of Buster:

San Dawg my old man got a kick out of your AMPM burger pic. Me? I’m still trying to sort out that tomato…

Facing Drew Hutchinson tonight. He’s a classic honky mlb pitcher. I’m sure we’ll crush him, right?

Home Cookin great tune by one of my fav guys, Junior Walker. Somewhere I have vinyl of his Greatest Hits Good stuff

Besides Harper, looking for list of FA OFs. MLBTR story on Cutch mentioned possibility Giants (unhappy with offers) do not trade him and give him the QO @$18mil for next season. If he does leave they get extra pick; if not there is value of another season until he is dealt.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 24, 2018 at 7:31 am

giving him a qualifying offer would be the dumbest thing we could do. It would kill any moderate interest that is out there for him as a free agent as it is now

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 24, 2018 at 7:53 am

Totally agree. If they won’t trade him and then do a QA, the front office is inept, insane or both…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 24, 2018 at 8:02 am

so you just let him walk for nothing? Or take whatev as short time rental right now?
what he has done this year does have to be replaced if you want to be better than the Padres…that’s why I wondered who is out there as FA for next year beside Harper.

It’s only a dumb move if paying him 18 million next year is unacceptable.
The value of any prospect they could get in return now is marginal.
The $300,000,000 elephant in the room will not be signing with the Giants, not in 2019, not ever.
If it were up to me, I’d save the $18,000,000 and play Slater in RF.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 24, 2018 at 9:49 am

Sadly our minor leaguers will come up with same level of McCutch production and wont cost $18 mill. Why waste the money???

  2. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 24, 2018 at 8:10 am

This is the way I look at trade anyone scenario:
Trade Bum and your SPs are weakened indefinitely. Holland DRod Suarez Strat yada yada, there’s no way that group gives up fewer runs than current one. A pen guy or two I could see as expendable, SPs no
Trade off Belt Cutch Longo etc., unless you go out and spend $$$ on couple hitters to replace their production, no way that LU scores more runs than current one.
so now you’re the Padres, who suck, scoring less and giving up more. Good luck with that.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 24, 2018 at 9:02 am

Yup, whoever the club trades away they’ll immediately be looking for an equivalent to fill that gap, especially Bumgarner and Belt, so it has to be some sort of blockbuster.

  3. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 24, 2018 at 8:11 am

He declines even more next year. They can’t be serious about him actually being in 2019 plans. Even more reason for a year down if he is..

  4. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 24, 2018 at 8:24 am

Best FAs (beside Harper and Machado) for position players I could find in cursory look would be :
    Tribe’s Michael Brantley (LH)
Stros Marwin Gonzalez (switch hitter throws R and plays everywhere)
    D J LeMahieu RH 2b from Rox.
Decent hitters all, but not much pop.

  5. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 24, 2018 at 9:01 am

$18 million qualifying offer? Agree, that would be “inept, dumb, and/or insane.” Cutch is gone . . . If not before the August 31st waiver deadline, than definitely next season. His $18 million seasons are pfffttt after this season.

Let’s face facts – the outfield competition is going to be Gorkys, Slater, Duggar, Oaf, and whatever else Sabes can find in the trade/FA dumpster. For shit and giggles to appease the fan base, the Front Office will throw out a couple of “fake news” stories about offers to the Harper’s and Machado’s on the free agent market. I just don’t see how they’re going to upgrade this team, with all the existing contract “anchors” around their neck.

    • sandog's avatar sandog said, on August 24, 2018 at 9:20 am

Do you think the pursuit of Stanton last year was fake news? I don’t think it was. I think they truly had a deal in place and Stanton nixed it—which was smart of him. Given that, I think they will go after Harper and Machado. I don’t think those guys want to hit in our park, so they won’t be interested, but I think they will legitimately go after them.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 24, 2018 at 5:51 pm

I do not think the Stanton news from last year was BS. Not sure about Machado, but I think they’ll go hard at Harper. Supposedly he likes to play here, but I would fall outta my fucking chair if they signed him. Kind of how I did when they signed Bonds.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 24, 2018 at 9:54 am

Nailed it Blade…free agent talk will be all for show. They did go all in for Stanton and Ohtani last off-season and that should be a lesson that free-agent hitters at that level (at-least potential for Ohtani) dont want to come to SF and ATT.

Why need to build a lineup around speed and contact hitting…get Boch the hell out of there…

Yep, in the article that Flav shared the other day, theyreferred to him as the GM at one point (and later as VP of Baseball Operations). Many of us have been saying for some time that Evans needed to go. It’s time.

  7. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 24, 2018 at 9:31 am

Pence’s $18.5 comes off the books, McCutchen’s $14.8 probably comes off the books but if you look at this chart from Cot’s Contracts (it includes a tax liability chart), you’ll see a bunch of arb eligible folks probably wanting raises (Panik, Strikland etc..) and the guys at the $.5 salaries (Gorkys, Moraonta etc..) wanting to get bumped up. So the Giants will have to make some moves. One I’d love to see gone before he gets busted or goes back to being a bust is Gorkys . Also, I think a match could be found for Longoria (mostly in the AL). One more year of Pablo with the Sox paying, I say let him play.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FPqQ67n_0T1niTkaJjEsNSxXoJWZpqG5TkYkSsWITEM/pubhtml#

The type of power hitter I’d like to see them get is a line drive hitting right hander (think, Uribe or Kent). With the juiced balls and probably the HR derby, it seems that most guys these days are trying to lift the ball for HRs and that does work in most parks, but not so much at Pac Bell.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 24, 2018 at 9:36 am

And yes, I do think the Giants will pick up Bum’s option.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 24, 2018 at 9:56 am

Sorry Bozo…no one is taking Longoria’s stiff of a contract. They did not have any takers for what little is left on McCutch’s deal on waivers…

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on August 24, 2018 at 10:07 am

McCutchen cleared waivers, that doesn’t mean he won’t or can’t be moved by the deadline but like I said above, his $14.8 will probably come off the books.
Longoria on the other hand, I do believe could and probably will be moved in the off-season, he’d be a good fit for an AL team needing a DH who sometimes plays 3B.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 24, 2018 at 5:55 pm

I think the Longoria possibility is even more realistic if the Giants eat a little salary. And if that is the only option (to eat some salary), they should do it.

  10. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 24, 2018 at 11:58 am

The kind of off-season I don’t want to see is the Giants having a bunch of near-misses on big free agents, and then eventually settling for bargain basement types. I’d rather just jettison a bunch of older guys and take our pounding the next couple of years.
Move Bart quickly up the minor league ladder next season, and get him here in the middle of the season.
But….we know what we’re probably going to see. Another season of a struggling and aged team trying to get to .500, and make sure the attendance at the ballpark is in the 30,000s.
The Giants ownership, no doubt, spends the vast majority of their time talking about the big real estate development project.
But at some point, they better start caring about the ball team, or they’re going to see the team hit a really long skid, as the A’s take up all the baseball oxygen in the Bay Area for years to come.

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on August 24, 2018 at 12:20 pm

Their going to keep running Posey out there which is asinine cause they don’t have a backup catcher for Hundley down on the farm decent enough.. guess it has to be Trevor Brown whatever???

  12. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 24, 2018 at 12:26 pm

if we offer McCutchen the 18 mil qualifier we are stuck with him. 18 mil is probably all that guy would get in a 3 year deal from someone else. AND they’d have to give up a first rd pick? No one is doing that. And he’s not working for 3 years for 18 when he could make it in a single year.
Save this post, throw it in my face if we offer it to him AND he declines it. But I think there is near zero chance that either of those things happen

  13. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 24, 2018 at 1:24 pm

Flav, is the Posey vs. Pence home run battle at 0-0….I’m feeling pretty good about winning now!!

But in terms of Posey and his hip, great argument can be made that his presence in the lineup since the all-star break actually made us less competitive, especially when Boch kept hitting him cleanup!!! Who knows. Hundley starts more and one could argue we could have won 4-5 games and would actually be a couple of games out in division and wild card…

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 24, 2018 at 1:30 pm

And with the degenerative hip, I think it is obvious they have to go to Posey and say while you go through recovery, no catching for you and you are now our primary first baseman. Can they now move Belt in the off-season??? Nats could also be a potential landing place for him..they will have the cash big time to handle his decent salary remaining.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 24, 2018 at 2:17 pm

We are just fucked. The trade pieces we do have we might as well keep as all we will do is weaken a weak team. None of the dead wood we want to get rid of is get-rid-of-able. Pence will sail away, at least. Keep Bum till the deadline next year and hold out for whatever they can get. His pitching is still above average, and his playoff record still means something.

Cutch? Bye bye. Craw and Posey will plod along. Smargle should be shitcanned. Cueto is a hologram for most of next year. So we will have a young pitching staff with a mishmash of fair to poor position players. Panik may get a high A guy or a middling AAer. Thats about all we got. If Longo and Craw hit, pablo is super sub off the bench, yadda yadda yadda, Right. We will be batting gravity again.

As far as Harper goes, I’ll believe it when it happens.

I had to see my PT yesterday, a guy doctors and trainers rave about. He knows the Giants’ PT people; he met Buster at some conference where Posey spoke about his own PT experiences, post-2011. My guy has heard nothing specific about the current hip problem, but he said it’s usually pretty clear–either osteo-arthritic issues (full or partial hip replacement), labrum tears (hello, Lincecum) or bone-spur-like problems. That list descends in severity. (Mrsportsdude chime in, please.) If Buster comes back strong, he’ll want to catch. If he doesn’t come back strong, who gives a shit where he plays.

MadBum pitched very well yesterday. Looks like he can do that at least some of the time for quite a while. He’s not much of an ace anymore, though.

Our two best players are headed downhill, maybe faster than we want to imagine. I’m fine with Craw, Belt and Longo. That’s a good IF. But not great. Add Altuve and it’s still not great.

The pen also is good. But not great. And the starting pitching, after aged MadBum, is what they call an unknown.

Next year looks weak, right now. FO worked hard to stay under the luxury tax this year to be able to invest a lot during the off season. The owners and FO may reconsider their strategy. Maybe they should just stay under the tax while it still exists to off-set the money they’re going to lose in revenue for a few years. Meanwhile, the new development will rise across McCovey Cove, just north of the Warriors’ new arena, which is going up now.

Hansen sucks in the OF. His looping routes to the ball are killing D-Rod.

Beltre is a slam-dunk Hall of Famer. Krukow made it sound like it’s a little bit in question.

Got him. Tough inning for the kid.

I wonder if he has to get his dad tickets or do HOFers get a free pass at every ballpark?

One sad casualty (for me) of the Giants falling out of it is the simple and slight pleasure of perusing the standings, something I stopped doing a few weeks ago. Just checked for the first time in awhile and I was surprised to see that there are 11 teams in the majors (of which TX is one) with worse records than the G’s… some of them horribly worse. That AL Central division is a joke. I wonder how the fans of those teams feel? Or fans of TX, watching this Giants team we’re all numbly disgusted with beating up on the Rangers…. so, I guess it could be worse. Not that that makes this team any more lovable…

As for Duggar, yeah, still learning but definite potential, and I think Slater could turn out to be a good player too. We say we would be patient in a rebuild, but I think just a little patience with those 2 could go a long way, especially considering how awful the OF has been for years now. But then again, I remember thinking that Calvin Murray had potential, so…….

Looking’ at that Panik error, it wasn’t a routine play, but not far from it. You can see he looked up on the last bounce, he didn’t look the ball into the glove. Looking up made him pull up his glove a bit at the last second; that caused the bobble…
