Home Cookin’
Well, we’re back home. Probably ready to go on a nice little run of wins to get us right back in this bad boy. That is, assuming Buster made it off the plane alive. This is what I think about these days when I think of Buster:

San Dawg my old man got a kick out of your AMPM burger pic. Me? I’m still trying to sort out that tomato…
Facing Drew Hutchinson tonight. He’s a classic honky mlb pitcher. I’m sure we’ll crush him, right?
Home Cookin great tune by one of my fav guys, Junior Walker. Somewhere I have vinyl of his Greatest Hits Good stuff
Besides Harper, looking for list of FA OFs. MLBTR story on Cutch mentioned possibility Giants (unhappy with offers) do not trade him and give him the QO @$18mil for next season. If he does leave they get extra pick; if not there is value of another season until he is dealt.
giving him a qualifying offer would be the dumbest thing we could do. It would kill any moderate interest that is out there for him as a free agent as it is now
Totally agree. If they won’t trade him and then do a QA, the front office is inept, insane or both…
so you just let him walk for nothing? Or take whatev as short time rental right now?
what he has done this year does have to be replaced if you want to be better than the Padres…that’s why I wondered who is out there as FA for next year beside Harper.
Totally
It’s only a dumb move if paying him 18 million next year is unacceptable.
The value of any prospect they could get in return now is marginal.
The $300,000,000 elephant in the room will not be signing with the Giants, not in 2019, not ever.
If it were up to me, I’d save the $18,000,000 and play Slater in RF.
Sadly our minor leaguers will come up with same level of McCutch production and wont cost $18 mill. Why waste the money???
This is the way I look at trade anyone scenario:
Trade Bum and your SPs are weakened indefinitely. Holland DRod Suarez Strat yada yada, there’s no way that group gives up fewer runs than current one. A pen guy or two I could see as expendable, SPs no
Trade off Belt Cutch Longo etc., unless you go out and spend $$$ on couple hitters to replace their production, no way that LU scores more runs than current one.
so now you’re the Padres, who suck, scoring less and giving up more. Good luck with that.
Yup, whoever the club trades away they’ll immediately be looking for an equivalent to fill that gap, especially Bumgarner and Belt, so it has to be some sort of blockbuster.
He declines even more next year. They can’t be serious about him actually being in 2019 plans. Even more reason for a year down if he is..
Best FAs (beside Harper and Machado) for position players I could find in cursory look would be :
Tribe’s Michael Brantley (LH)
Stros Marwin Gonzalez (switch hitter throws R and plays everywhere)
D J LeMahieu RH 2b from Rox.
Decent hitters all, but not much pop.
$18 million qualifying offer? Agree, that would be “inept, dumb, and/or insane.” Cutch is gone . . . If not before the August 31st waiver deadline, than definitely next season. His $18 million seasons are pfffttt after this season.
Let’s face facts – the outfield competition is going to be Gorkys, Slater, Duggar, Oaf, and whatever else Sabes can find in the trade/FA dumpster. For shit and giggles to appease the fan base, the Front Office will throw out a couple of “fake news” stories about offers to the Harper’s and Machado’s on the free agent market. I just don’t see how they’re going to upgrade this team, with all the existing contract “anchors” around their neck.
Do you think the pursuit of Stanton last year was fake news? I don’t think it was. I think they truly had a deal in place and Stanton nixed it—which was smart of him. Given that, I think they will go after Harper and Machado. I don’t think those guys want to hit in our park, so they won’t be interested, but I think they will legitimately go after them.
I do not think the Stanton news from last year was BS. Not sure about Machado, but I think they’ll go hard at Harper. Supposedly he likes to play here, but I would fall outta my fucking chair if they signed him. Kind of how I did when they signed Bonds.
Nailed it Blade…free agent talk will be all for show. They did go all in for Stanton and Ohtani last off-season and that should be a lesson that free-agent hitters at that level (at-least potential for Ohtani) dont want to come to SF and ATT.
Why need to build a lineup around speed and contact hitting…get Boch the hell out of there…
Ominous sign for Booby, who i’d counsel to dust off his resume, that Sabean is highly visible in the local media this week.
I agree with that.
Yep, in the article that Flav shared the other day, theyreferred to him as the GM at one point (and later as VP of Baseball Operations). Many of us have been saying for some time that Evans needed to go. It’s time.
Pence’s $18.5 comes off the books, McCutchen’s $14.8 probably comes off the books but if you look at this chart from Cot’s Contracts (it includes a tax liability chart), you’ll see a bunch of arb eligible folks probably wanting raises (Panik, Strikland etc..) and the guys at the $.5 salaries (Gorkys, Moraonta etc..) wanting to get bumped up. So the Giants will have to make some moves. One I’d love to see gone before he gets busted or goes back to being a bust is Gorkys . Also, I think a match could be found for Longoria (mostly in the AL). One more year of Pablo with the Sox paying, I say let him play.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FPqQ67n_0T1niTkaJjEsNSxXoJWZpqG5TkYkSsWITEM/pubhtml#
The type of power hitter I’d like to see them get is a line drive hitting right hander (think, Uribe or Kent). With the juiced balls and probably the HR derby, it seems that most guys these days are trying to lift the ball for HRs and that does work in most parks, but not so much at Pac Bell.
And yes, I do think the Giants will pick up Bum’s option.
Sorry Bozo…no one is taking Longoria’s stiff of a contract. They did not have any takers for what little is left on McCutch’s deal on waivers…
McCutchen cleared waivers, that doesn’t mean he won’t or can’t be moved by the deadline but like I said above, his $14.8 will probably come off the books.
Longoria on the other hand, I do believe could and probably will be moved in the off-season, he’d be a good fit for an AL team needing a DH who sometimes plays 3B.
I think the Longoria possibility is even more realistic if the Giants eat a little salary. And if that is the only option (to eat some salary), they should do it.
It would be interesting if Sabean hired a young sabermetric geek to replace Evans. I think it almost has to happen.
Agree. Maybe he’s available . . .
Giants FO always plays the tease game with the fans. They day were all in going after Harper are Machado, right up till, well we gave it are best! “Like in The Rock when Connery said to Cage you have to be up for this no hesitation, which Cage I’ll do my best, which Connery said your best? Your best is when you fuck the home coming queen, which Cage said Carla was the home coming queen 👸.
The kind of off-season I don’t want to see is the Giants having a bunch of near-misses on big free agents, and then eventually settling for bargain basement types. I’d rather just jettison a bunch of older guys and take our pounding the next couple of years.
Move Bart quickly up the minor league ladder next season, and get him here in the middle of the season.
But….we know what we’re probably going to see. Another season of a struggling and aged team trying to get to .500, and make sure the attendance at the ballpark is in the 30,000s.
The Giants ownership, no doubt, spends the vast majority of their time talking about the big real estate development project.
But at some point, they better start caring about the ball team, or they’re going to see the team hit a really long skid, as the A’s take up all the baseball oxygen in the Bay Area for years to come.
Agree. Could you imagine if the A’s somehow got a beautiful downtown Oakland ballpark built which led to gentrification and revitalization of Oak town? Talk about the tables turning.
Essentially why the Giants blocked the move to San Jose.. which I still find outrageous as a Giants fan from the Jo…
Their going to keep running Posey out there which is asinine cause they don’t have a backup catcher for Hundley down on the farm decent enough.. guess it has to be Trevor Brown whatever???
if we offer McCutchen the 18 mil qualifier we are stuck with him. 18 mil is probably all that guy would get in a 3 year deal from someone else. AND they’d have to give up a first rd pick? No one is doing that. And he’s not working for 3 years for 18 when he could make it in a single year.
Save this post, throw it in my face if we offer it to him AND he declines it. But I think there is near zero chance that either of those things happen
Flav, is the Posey vs. Pence home run battle at 0-0….I’m feeling pretty good about winning now!!
But in terms of Posey and his hip, great argument can be made that his presence in the lineup since the all-star break actually made us less competitive, especially when Boch kept hitting him cleanup!!! Who knows. Hundley starts more and one could argue we could have won 4-5 games and would actually be a couple of games out in division and wild card…
And with the degenerative hip, I think it is obvious they have to go to Posey and say while you go through recovery, no catching for you and you are now our primary first baseman. Can they now move Belt in the off-season??? Nats could also be a potential landing place for him..they will have the cash big time to handle his decent salary remaining.
Agree with you re Posey. In a way he’s a huge hole in the LU and Bochy just keeps plugging him in there at the top but it’s not like there’s much of an alternative.
twitter filled to the brim with idiots who think we’re gonna land Harper. That makes no sense on so many levels.
Hell would literally freeze over before we landed Harper…funny, after the Spanks landed Stanton, I think many including me thought the Spanks would move Stanton to the Flodgers and then sign Harper.
Now, I dont think they will find any taker for Stanton and that contract. I think even money on Harper ending up with the Cubs..
Harper landing in SF is as likely as a Wilbur Ross business deal being on the up and up. Hoooo, hey now!
(sorry, couldn’t resist)
Not THAT is POTD. will upload when I get home tonight
I had to Google Wilbur Ross.
I guess I have some intellectual gaps…
Yeah we’re not landing Harper no freakin way, but sure would be nice cause the Giants have the least amount of power in the outfield then any team, and will continue that trend..
We are just fucked. The trade pieces we do have we might as well keep as all we will do is weaken a weak team. None of the dead wood we want to get rid of is get-rid-of-able. Pence will sail away, at least. Keep Bum till the deadline next year and hold out for whatever they can get. His pitching is still above average, and his playoff record still means something.
Cutch? Bye bye. Craw and Posey will plod along. Smargle should be shitcanned. Cueto is a hologram for most of next year. So we will have a young pitching staff with a mishmash of fair to poor position players. Panik may get a high A guy or a middling AAer. Thats about all we got. If Longo and Craw hit, pablo is super sub off the bench, yadda yadda yadda, Right. We will be batting gravity again.
As far as Harper goes, I’ll believe it when it happens.
Harper would be insane to come to Att. Why get a LH power bar anyway? Makes no sense I’m that park. Trade Bum now or offseason. Don’t risk injury or arm trouble through first half next year…
Because they play half their games in other parks and he’s already shown he has no problem jacking the ball out of AT&T. There’s not a park in baseball that can hold that guy when he squares one up.
He ain’t comin’, book it…
They ain’t gonna roll that way, Snarkk. And unless they get an offer that is out of this world, he won’t moving this year. He’s have to clear waivers. And if someone did claim him, the Giants would have little leverage trading him now if someone signed him.
The burgers at my local ampm our 3 hours past due, what do I do….
Are not our. Please advise
don’t feed them to that cat
i texted Diggity, didn’t hear back in time. The clerks were arguing with eachother….I just decided it didn’t have anything to do with me, I paid for my gas and rolled…that’s what wrong with the world today, nobody gives a shit about anyone but themselves, I’m part of the problem…..
I had to see my PT yesterday, a guy doctors and trainers rave about. He knows the Giants’ PT people; he met Buster at some conference where Posey spoke about his own PT experiences, post-2011. My guy has heard nothing specific about the current hip problem, but he said it’s usually pretty clear–either osteo-arthritic issues (full or partial hip replacement), labrum tears (hello, Lincecum) or bone-spur-like problems. That list descends in severity. (Mrsportsdude chime in, please.) If Buster comes back strong, he’ll want to catch. If he doesn’t come back strong, who gives a shit where he plays.
MadBum pitched very well yesterday. Looks like he can do that at least some of the time for quite a while. He’s not much of an ace anymore, though.
Our two best players are headed downhill, maybe faster than we want to imagine. I’m fine with Craw, Belt and Longo. That’s a good IF. But not great. Add Altuve and it’s still not great.
The pen also is good. But not great. And the starting pitching, after aged MadBum, is what they call an unknown.
Next year looks weak, right now. FO worked hard to stay under the luxury tax this year to be able to invest a lot during the off season. The owners and FO may reconsider their strategy. Maybe they should just stay under the tax while it still exists to off-set the money they’re going to lose in revenue for a few years. Meanwhile, the new development will rise across McCovey Cove, just north of the Warriors’ new arena, which is going up now.
great post.
Yes, awesome post, xoot. That Mission Rock development is going to be a financial grand slam for the Giants. Last I heard they were hoping to start construction early next year. Mo money mo money mo money….
Good synopsis on Buster and the team, too.
I’ve never heard of bone spurs in the hips. Shoulders? Elbows? Sure but it usually isn’t a leg thing. i doubt its bone spurs. Which leaves the other worse alternatives.
Bone spurs in the hip are common. Could be more than one problem, however
Which they should be able to determine once they get in there to address the spurs. Looking more and more like it was a good call to draft a catcher.
good point, about the Bart draft pick. Maybe they really do understand the weaknesses and actually are working to rebuild. Sabean did a great job drafting during the down years after 2003. Too hazy for hope, too good to be impossible.
They had to know about the hip going into the draft…
Does anybody in the Giants organization have a clue anymore on making decisions??
The latest being The Shark. They can’t decide if he needs surgery are if he does it’s even fixable??? WTF And remember when he had the supposed pectoral strain, and rest would take care of that( think Cueto lol) but holy cow it turned out to be his shoulder??I have no faith in this organization/medical staff to do anything Right anymore..
1. Andrew McCutchen (R) RF
2. Joe Panik (L) 2B
3. Buster Posey (R) C
4. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
5. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
6. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
7. Alen Hanson (S) LF
8. Steven Duggar (L) CF
9. Dereck Rodriguez (R) P
Is this Hanson’s 1st game in left?
I’m pretty sure he played LF at least once during the recent road trip.
no, he’s started there a few times
about to watch Full Metal Jacket. Wish me luck. Will review later.
First half is great. Last half, meh…
Exactly.
It’s Joey Gallo night!
The names in the Rangers line up are hyper-multicultural.
Cutch goes deep.
Well that Cutch bomb went way over the waiver wire
no one wants to bring back the guy who leads team in HRs and rbis, And his replacement on the offensively challenged team next year is…?
No one..
Worse power OF in baseball bar none..
Also leads team in games, AB, runs, hits, walks and steals. One behind Crawford in doubles…
This Giants team is an offensive joke.
The leader of that is no great shakes.
No Cutch, nohow, next year, please…
not at 18 million. Of course not, that would be ludicrous.
Nice 1st inning crooked number.
Headline on MSNBC today: “Trump Worried About Pecker Leaking.”
Come on now; there’s no way that headline writer did that on accident.
The guy in charge of the National Enquirer has the name Pecker, because of course he does.
Can things get even more surreal?
Probably.
That’s even better than the Daily News headline “Pecker in a Vise”, all caps
First headline I remember:
https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/daily-news-front-page-thursday-september-81959-headline-killed-i-picture-id160766923?k=6&m=160766923&s=612×612&w=0&h=4JDeGvEycXWVbuX2uHWPj9VQSq5IYJnjXYt57eGoh-o=
Gotta love the Daily News for headlines.
Yeah, I’m not getting an Ed Sheeran concert packing AT&T Park.
That will remain a mystery to me.
I had to Google Ed Sheeran…
I think he tapped into the Dave Matthews/Jack Johnson crowd.
It’s a type of music that doesn’t do it for me. Music to smoke weed to, I guess.
I really don’t know. It’s a mystery to me.
I have a theory most of the men are there because of the women.
The Padres always seem to come along when other teams in the NL West really need them.
This weekend the Dodgers will be having at them.
Keep tacking on runs.
Wow, runs. Get the kid his 7th win.
Geez this pitcher stinks. Are they purposely making him a sacrificeal lamb tonight??
Hansen sucks in the OF. His looping routes to the ball are killing D-Rod.
Beltre is a slam-dunk Hall of Famer. Krukow made it sound like it’s a little bit in question.
Classic “compiler” who probably juiced his brains out in his insane 2004 season.
Yes, he’ll go in…
Hanson serpentined his way to that bloop single.
Got him. Tough inning for the kid.
I wonder if he has to get his dad tickets or do HOFers get a free pass at every ballpark?
One sad casualty (for me) of the Giants falling out of it is the simple and slight pleasure of perusing the standings, something I stopped doing a few weeks ago. Just checked for the first time in awhile and I was surprised to see that there are 11 teams in the majors (of which TX is one) with worse records than the G’s… some of them horribly worse. That AL Central division is a joke. I wonder how the fans of those teams feel? Or fans of TX, watching this Giants team we’re all numbly disgusted with beating up on the Rangers…. so, I guess it could be worse. Not that that makes this team any more lovable…
I googled Gorkys’ nickname Cazador. Here’s what came up from one of the sources:
“A mutherf#cking huge mutant wasp in Fallout: New Vegas. Kills you with one sting. big-ass son of a bitch wasp.”
Yeah that’s how I feel after a few of shots of los cazadores
I’m warming up to Duggar a little.
A genius instructor could turn him into Paul O’Neill…
Me too. I had to remind myself that he was on the Minor League fast track so he’s still figuring some things out.
I doubt any ex baseball player ever pays for a ticket..Maybe Flavors boy Phil Nastu had too,i sort of recall something about getting him beers on the Flapper credit card account,..
You think Adam Shabala just strolls into AT&T at will?
What’s Pence nickname?Washed up??
Close, it’s Underpants. But his friends call him skid mark.
Damn, I could have gone a long, long time without ever typing that
Yeah, Paul, the AL Central is a colossal joke this season. Over very early.
As for Duggar, yeah, still learning but definite potential, and I think Slater could turn out to be a good player too. We say we would be patient in a rebuild, but I think just a little patience with those 2 could go a long way, especially considering how awful the OF has been for years now. But then again, I remember thinking that Calvin Murray had potential, so…….
Gearrin coming in! Or has he been in—-I’m just tuning in.
Not in yet, he was warming up though.
I got all excited and jumped the gun a little bit.
I’d feel a bit more comfortable if we were able to get a few insurance runs.
Guerrin’s biggest achievement in baseball will have been to help bring in the pitch clock.
Congratulations, Guerrin, take a bow.
What is this motherfucker staring at?
Yeah, the whole stupid ritual he goes through before even looking in for the sign. Imagine being the catcher waiting for the stupid ritual to end so you can put fingers down.
Belt and Longo not getting it done.
Embarrassing moment for Posey.
wow
Fuck me…
Embarrassing moment for Panik.
This team just finds more and more ways to F up.
That doesn’t help Panik’s case to hang around next year…
That’s on Giant D – not the Fresh Wince…
Holey sheet what a fuckin debacle
Embarrassing moment for Smith.
No win for D-Rod.
Reminded me of Snow’s HR off Benitez…
We’re not going to have a pitcher with 10 win this year.
Ouch.
When was the last time a team had no 10 game winner and no 20 HR hitter in the same season?
1972 Texas Rangers
(I pulled that out of my ass, but I actually think it is a decent guess)
Last year’s Giants?…
It is last year’s Giants!
They were so bad in 2017, I figured they had a shot…
Loo compares Duggar to Paul O’ Neill. Bochy compares him to Steve Finley.
Can you name the Flapper who compared him to Ken Henderson?
How about the Flapper who has compared him both to Dan Gladden and Mike Kingery?
Melancon did his part, too, giving up a run.
Many have contributed—total team effort.
These guys sure like extra inning games
For an instant, I thought Dyson’s jersey nickname was “PFFFFT”..
It should be.
Looking’ at that Panik error, it wasn’t a routine play, but not far from it. You can see he looked up on the last bounce, he didn’t look the ball into the glove. Looking up made him pull up his glove a bit at the last second; that caused the bobble…
Looking at the players involved in the box score of this game, there are 14 players, give or take. I would welcome half of them being gone. That’s not good.
Their closer is wiping people out.
Bad loss…
Blowing a 6 run lead at home? Yeah…
Kuiper blamed McCutchen and surprise, Belt — for not adding on with RISP. Left it to Kruk to bring up Panik’s error and Smith for giving up the dinger, and then Dyson for the game winning walk. You lead 6-0, you gotta win the game. Kuip needs a vacation…
An Aerosmith vacation….
Posey surgery is Monday per Yahoo.
Recovery time: 6-8 months…
Smarg set back too. Figures.
