A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Red Socked in the 7th

Our idiot Liar in Chief decided to chime in on baseball last night:

Look, fans always want to have it both ways. And if Trump is saying it you know it’s a fools take. But when a guy has pitched 10 innings in 4 weeks you don’t just leave him out there until it all falls apart. Cora took a ton of shit for leaving Rodriguez in TOO LONG. And Roberts literally just watched that blow up in his face. Hill had thrown more than 100 pitches 3 times all season. They had a commanding lead. To top it off, Hill literally told Roberts he was nearly done. And while the bullpen was gassed from the night before, if you had told Roberts before the game he was going to get Hill into the 7th inning he would have thanked God and confidently gone to his bullpen. Now, you can argue with his bullpen choices I guess, but that’s lame. The bullpen is there for a reason. You have to use it and these guys either perform or they don’t. That’s not totally on the manager.

Ugh, defending Roberts just took a lot out of me. Time to wrap this thread up (as well as the series later tonight).

My favorite image from last night:

If the new Giants GM goes chasing after this MOFO with a Brinks truck, tack on another 2-3 years to the existing wilderness years . . . blowing bubbles and playing dirty again (stepping on Pearce’s heel). Man, I hate this clown.

Good post regarding the President . . . We have 3 psychos terrorizing synagogues, Kroger grocery stores, and prominent people who’d been criticized by the President, yet numb nuts finds time – I guess between his golf and Kanye West meetings – to criticize a baseball manager. What a tool.

I think anyone giving Dave Roberts and the Fodgers shit is priceless…a President is not supposed to watch a World Series game now on a Saturday night around 10 pm???

We had an American journalist get his head chopped off and Obama went off and immediately played golf…so a little perspective and balance does everyone some good. If Trump had done the same, he would have been rightly criticized but if he had, the media would have obsessed over it for 3 weeks. Obama had done so and there were mass media crickets then. Again, straight facts.

I missed the Moreland homer live as I had given up on the Sox. The pitch that Madson threw may have been the worst pitch (85 mph change up with a 4 run lead and 2 on) I have ever seen in a World Series game…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 28, 2018 at 10:29 am

I didn’t say shit about a president watching a baseball game. That being said, you’re right about Obama playing golf after that incident. He shouldn’t have done it and he was called on it and said he was wrong to have done so. That being said, this current President is the most despicable person in the world . . . Go ahead, try to argue that. lqtm.

For his own personal gain, and perhaps other reasons yet to be known. He has no ideology, except promote himself. Always it’s about him. Bring back the Posey/Belt/Panik/Craw/Longo infield and sign Harper and a couple of other low budget free agent pitchers and outfielders while you’re at it and call it an off season.
    We don’t need some hotshot analytics GM to pull that off. Someone who can work with Boras and knows how to find value on the free agent market can handle that;
Bring in the visionary GM once we clear the decks of these contracts in a few years and he has some room to operate.

Wreck-It Ralph couldn’t tear down this roster with all these contracts.

I’ve been reading historian Jon Meacham’s new book “The Soul of America.”
It’s a very moving book. Lincoln asked the nation to act “according to the better angels of our nature.” He spoke to the good in people.
One of the things I most dislike about Trump is that he does the opposite. He tries to bring out the worst characteristics in people, and often succeeds in doing that.
Great book; I highly recommend it..

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 28, 2018 at 3:01 pm

Zum, not defending T, but what happened in America after Lincoln didn’t have a lot to do with “the good in people.”
America has always been like this, from first settlers interactions with indigenous people already here, through those that came here or were brought here not of their own volition, from other countries too.
Stuff I read today is just “chickens coming home to roost” and people being more open about the hate they really feel.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 28, 2018 at 3:10 pm

I totally see your point, Willie; but this is a big criticism that conservatives have about liberals: that we spend the vast majority of our focus on the negative about America. And it hurts us politically. A lot of Americans feel they’re always getting hammered by liberals about things. Nothing’s ever good enough for us.
We need to fight injustice in our nation, for sure, but also find a way to celebrate all the good in the nation. There’s a healthy balance in there somewhere.

Nor for me (I was actually expecting a sweep. I think you were too). Didn’t happen, but before this series started, I just didn’t think the 92 win Dodgers could hang with the Sox, who won 108.

By the by, you said something about Roberts getting his marching orders from the front office – either at the beginning of this series or during the series with the Brew Crew. I was going to question it at the time, but I didn’t know enough about Roberts, nor his relationship with players and the Front Office. Guess what? You were right, as I confirmed it today . . . an LA Times columnist said this:

“But here’s the thing for everyone calling for Roberts to be fired immediately. Roberts gets a lot of his marching orders from the front office. A lot of “Here’s what should be done in this scenario, and in this scenario …” A new manager is not going to change things that much. So please direct some of your anger to Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi.

They can all share the blame for the Game 4 loss. Maybe their computers can tell them what percentage blame each person should receive.”

For example, I think they can only watch PG rated movies and below (no R rated).

I know nothing about prisons. (I’ve been very lucky.)

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 28, 2018 at 6:27 pm

Now you’ve got me thinking about books and movies with prison tv scenes. Not prison but close — remember the World Series scene in One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest. Great in both the book and the movie, one of Jack Nicholson’s great moments

“Koufax kicks. He delivers. It’s up the middle! It’s a base hit! Richardson is rounding first. He’s going for second. The ball’s into deep right center. Davis cuts the ball off! Here comes the throw. He throws it to second! He slides! He’s in there! He’s safe! It’s a double.! Richardson’s on second base!
Koufax is in big fucking trouble! Big trouble, baby! All right. Tresh is the next batter. Tresh looks in. Koufax… Koufax gets a sign from Roseboro. He kicks once. He pumps. He fires. It’s a strike! Koufax’s curve ball is snapping off like a fucking firecracker! All right, here he comes with the next pitch. Tresh swings. It’s a long fly ball to deep left center! It’s going! It’s gone! Let’s hear it! One way!”

Yep. Great movie – one of his best (although my favorite is probably one where he wasn’t the star, A Few Good Men).

Pearce the dodger killer, who had great reg season, is 35 yrs old…just another example that not every player over 30 will fall apart and suck.
Price is throwing harder than Opie so far.

Remember when Rooster churned out that bullshit last week about people who don’t know baseball think it’s a wasted year if they don’t beat the Sox? I wonder how proud he is right now of this shit show. I wonder if he feels great about all they accomplished in 2018. LQTM

  71. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on October 28, 2018 at 7:42 pm

I’m a bit foggy on this, are the Sox playing the Buffalo Dodgers or is it the Los Angeles Bills?

  72. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 28, 2018 at 7:50 pm

On average, since 1997, the Dodgers payroll has been $92.58 million per year.

On average, since 1997, the Padres payroll has been $48.60 million per year.

In that time frame, the Dodgers and the Padres have the same number of World Series titles. It’s just that the Dodgers had to pay $879.6 million more over the 20-year span to attain the same level of success.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 28, 2018 at 7:58 pm

I’m just kidding . . . The Dodgers have had a ton of success since 1988, often being at the top of the National League and even achieving some rare feats along the way:

      23 winning seasons

      10 division titles (5 straight since 2013)

      2 Wild Card berths (1996, 2006)

7 Rookie of the Year winners (Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, Raúl Mondesí, Hideo Nomo, Todd Hollandsworth, Corey Seager, Cody Bellinger)

4 Cy Young Awards (Eric Gagne, Clayton Kershaw x3)

      1 MVP (Clayton Kershaw)

1 Pitching Triple Crown (Clayton Kershaw)

1 Manager of the Year (Dave Roberts)

      .513 record in the 1990’s

      .532 record in the 2000’s

      .557 record in the 2010’s

23 seasons of over 3,000,000 in attendance

6 no-hitters (Fernando Valenzuela, Kevin Gross, Ramón Martínez, Hideo Nomo, Josh Beckett, Clayton Kershaw)

1 player hit 4 home runs in one game (Shawn Green)

2 players hit for the cycle (Orlando Hudson, Cody Bellinger)

5 players toss 4 strikeouts in a single inning (Darren Dreifort, Brad Penny, Zack Greinke, Kenley Jansen, Sergio Santos)

30 game hit streak (Andre Ethier)

2 immaculate innings (Todd Worrell, Kenley Jansen)

3 30-30 club seasons (Raúl Mondesí x2, Matt Kemp)

4 years of having the highest payroll (2014-2017)

Great thing they never let any of the amazing achievements and endless talent go to waste. Can’t think of a single thing that would make this list even better. Not one goddamn thing. lqtm
