Finally!
Whew! What a ride. But the Harper fantasy is now over. We can get back to rooting for Maybin and Solarte. The Giants o/u win total this year is 73.5. They won 73 last season. Think the “Mays-arte” power combo gets them over the hump? I actually think the Giants win 73 easily this season…..As long as not a single player gets hurt. Actually if nobody gets hurt I bet they win 82 or so.
What are the chances that nobody gets hurt?
Zilch of course. If we get out of camp uninjured, I’ll be surprised.
Last year, I said they would win 75 games (they were 73-89). Sabevans left a shit sandwich for Zaidi, so his job was practically “Mission Impossible” for this season and likely the next couple afterwards. However, I am quite pleased with his machinations to improve the club, but I don’t think this team wins anywhere close to 73 games, much less 75.
If Zaidi is done with the moves, I am going with a 65-97 record and last place. By the by, the Giants had 1,101 total player days on the disabled list in 2018, which ranked middle of the pack (15th) in the major leagues.
Nobody gets hurt vs. everybody gets hurt—Posey Belt panik Craw (admitted he played hurt for long time) Longo Duggar Mac Slater Pablo R Jones even, just for position players. Plus Cueto Bum smdrz.
At least this year there are league avg. or better back ups, and pitching should be better. Giants are going to have to hold other teams down but I could see .500 as ceiling. Get to deadline at .500, see what happens.
I still like the POTD from Dirt. And on the MLBTR story today, according to Bags in The Athletic, Baer said Z and not ownership “was the leading advocate for Harper.” Hmmnn.
Further, Boras is said to have told Giants they had to go $20 mil over best offer (due to Cal taxes) to get him.
Sorry Willie, I somehow missed this post about Farhan before I posted mine below. I read that same thing by Baggs but also a NBC report and something Bochy said, that all pretty much confirmed it was Zaidi’s idea.
I don’t see this as .500 team. Im giving Farhan a year to restructure and to flesh outbwhoncan truly hang as big-leaguers with Cheesy Mac/Shaw/Slater/Duggar and and if the Suarez/Rodriguez combo can solidify their spots in the rotation or are they the new Billy Swift/John Burkett (do either bowl???) Duo.
This is the make or break year for Panik!!!
I think ownership is “panicking” about what is likely to be a big down season in attendance and fan excitement ala 2008-2009. But then we started to see the emergence of Cain then Lincecum and then a Panda. None of those except Bart seem to be on the horizon…
I’ve read a few things now that have said that it was Farhan’s idea to go for Harper and ownership went along with him, but Farhan didn’t feel comfortable going higher than the 12 year $310 million offer.
Going back to when Zaidi was hired, I seem to recall that the Giants wanted to stay competitive and not do a complete rebuild and I assume that Farhan agreed to this. So knowing this and that there is $300 mil still laying around, I expect to be in the hunt this year. Outside of the abundance of relief arms we have, I doubt any any of the starting vets will be traded unless it gets another MLer to fill a more lacking position.
85 wins as of today’s team, mid 90s with the right moves going forward.
I really do like our chances if nobody gets hurt. We’d make it to the deadline a little over .500. Add on. Steamroll right to the World Series. Let the chips fall where they may from there.
Man I think we need to play some poker BF, i need to see your tendency’s on your bluffing. This team always has key injuries, can’t even put a number on how Bochy never had a set LU all year. Right now unless a major pick up are 2, 78 wins tops..
No way in hell there are no injuries. If they can avoid any long-term injuries to key players, and Zaidi makes a few slick moves, I think this team improves over the 73 from last year. Not ready to predict playoffs at this time.
Guess not getting Bryce might have pissed 😡 off Larry Baer some. The famous TMZ circus has a video out of Larry pushing his wife down and grabbing a cell phone out of her hand..
Thought you were kidding but here it is. Nice knowing you Larry. Hasta luego
How do you like the guy with his feet up, with the dog? Maybe he was on his phone.
Yeah, the other dude was on his phone. Not sure he saw it coming but there’s a gap in the video.
yeah, I see it now. Those long flights to and from Las Vegas took their toll . . . .
One piece said the guy who shot the video stepped in between the vids to break up the fight.
The TMZ piece also includes this:
Baer later commented to Sernoffsky:
— Evan Sernoffsky 🥃 (@EvanSernoffsky) March 1, 2019
Super embarrassing that everyone witnessed me manhandling my wife errrr that this happened.
Who really also sees Larry Baer and obviously starting to get into it with his wife and says hey let me pull my phone out and film this???
The person whp also took the video disnt just take this and wonder if he was trying to see of he could cash in. He obviously sold it to TMZ.
Ok I am not going to say what I am thinking about Larry Baer’s wife…
I guess Larry didnt have a very happy fan day….
First Charles Johnson now this? Talk about the wilderness years.
Oh dont start in on the greatest human being walking this fair earth…
Forgot my happy face…😊😇
The real question is what was on the phone that he didn’t want her to see? Judging by her screaming (warranted or not), I don’t expect her to stay quiet about this. It might take Bryce Harper like money to make this go away.
Larry’s wife name is Pam, kinda rhymes with “Slam” as into the ground..
Kinda makes you wonder, what’s on her cellphone 📱 to make him go ballistic??
Wow. Rough couple of days for Baer.
I don’t think this is that big of a deal. Embarrassing as hell for Baer though, no doubt.
it’s not. Her screaming makes it worse. But I don’t think Baer needs to be vilified for this. Certainly I don’t see how MLB does anything close to punishment.
Why is screaming like she is being knifed..”OH MY GOD!!”???
Does she not relaize he is a public figure???
He looks at his ph at the end of the video like he’s checking to see if the screen cracked or something. I’m sorry, but I’m not getting what was so terrible about this. He’s trying to get his phone back from her and she kind of awkwardly falls off the chair. He didn’t hit her or slap her. I’m not saying this shouldn’t be embarrassing for both of them but I’m just not understanding how this was some terrible physical altercation. I’m open to hearing what your takes are on this though
It was a colossal mistake, in many ways. Technically, you’d have to say he overpowered her. I’m not outraged by it, but I’ll bet every woman I know is.
He definitely exerted some force in taking the phone, but it looks like she fell, too. Regardless, I do agree with Craig in that he did not hit her or slap her, etc. Embarrassing? Yes. Mistake? Yes. But not seeing this as a big deal. Will be interesting to see if anything else transpires.
Tonight’s LU shows MadBum pitching, and Puig’s not penciled in to start for Cinn. Oh, right — David Bell’s their manager, now.
Yeah Xoot, nothing says your in California like the guy in jeans and loafers with his poodle in his lap who is too busy on his phone to give a crap about Baer knocking his wife to the concrete 10 feet away!
he didn’t knock her to the concrete. He was completely focused on getting the phone. I’m as conservative as anyone when it comes to violence against women but that’s not was this was, IMO
Inadvertently knocked her to the concrete. How about that?
inadvertent for sure. He was focused on the phone not her. Honestly? That’s probably the most either of them have moved around in years, it’s not a surprise to me she fell off the chair as she wasn’t expecting him to do that. I’m not going to feel bad about defending Baer here. And I’m only defending him against this weird TMZ claim that this was a physical altercation. They touched each other a little, I guess.
I would not define that as knocking her to the ground. And I am down with the guy poor guy and his dog. Why should he get involved in some domestic squabble between obviously a deranged woman…wait I did not say deranged…Larry got his phone!!!
From what I can tell, the poodle briefly gives a crap about what is going on, but the owner never so much as glances over.
I gotta admit that when i’m in the big city and crazy shit starts going down, I stay the hell out of it too.
Exactly Dog!!! I was just there last week and I was feeding the meter on Polk about to get some grub Swan Oyster, some nutso bum/panhandler/druggie sitting on the ground starts yelling not to stare at him because someone was trying to steal his soul. I did not go over and ask if he was talking to me…
Well NBC News is running the Baer story already on their national news. Baer is probably going to be f’d over this.
I am taking a guess this is not Baer’s first wife…anyone know? She does look younger and obviously wackier…
I think I read it IS his long time wife and the mother of his kids.
And nbc just ran another picture of them and has to be her. She is yelling loud enough to draw attention and embarrass him.
Yep. Married 18 years. 4 kids.
ESPN broke in to show the video, regardless of what any of us think, it’s not a good look. In my opinion the screaming is the big story here. If you only listen to the video and didn’t watch it, you would think she was seriously in danger. She either felt based on experience that he was about to become physical again or it was an opportunity for her to take financial advantage of a soured relationship knowing that a camera was rolling. My guess is it’s the latter but we certainly can’t discount the former.
Well, Kathy said it was no big deal. He did shove/push/do something to cause her to fall off the chair. When he walks away, you can see him thinking “I’m fucked.”
And in this day and age? He’s fucked. Funny thing is if that was me there, I’d say something really inappropriate.
I would have held up the phone like I just scored a td and did a little dance…
I don’t know. If Krukow can be shamed out of Gamer Babe Day at the Park by offended fans (and he was), I think Baer’s in for one helluva turn in the barrel over this imbroglio.
Yep it is coming
anyone else see it this way? Hurt? Helpless?
She fell off a chair wrestling for a phone a d how does he k ow she was laying on the ground hurt and helpless….I bet she went after him and the camera stalker got in the middle and was likely the one who you hear saying just walk away to Baer…
And what does he nean by dip? Did Baer just dip into a tin of chaw????
With every moment of everything on video, most crimes should never go unsolved…
I read somewhere she has a broken foot or something like that.
whaaaat? From that? I’d like to see confirmation of that. Again, she’s an older lady who probably isn’t used to falling off a chair, maybe something happened to her.
What was on the phone??? I say it was a naked picture of him and Baby Bryce Harper in Vegas..what happened in Vegas apparently did not stay in Vegas…
Larry Baer, taking 3D Candy Crush to a whole new level.
I think Baer is trying to say she had an injured foot before this happened. While she wasn’t doing the full on ottoman thing like Poodle Guy, he is implying that made her more likely to lose her balance.
Which Flapper was it who came up on Baer and Chris Berman both half in the bag at MoMo’s one time?
Chuck maybe?
Also, can anyone ID the park/courtyard where this incident went down?
Hayes Valley is what I read. Wasnt me but I git drunbk with Berman at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii in 1998.
Getting a chance to watch the spring training game against Brewers with this young arm Adon…wow…hitting 101 and his spots. A future closer for us??? Anyone catch him throwing? Then last pitch was 102 for hos second strikeout…
Tend to agree that this isn’t as a big of a deal but this is the kind of thing that only hurts the org and creates and opening for anyone who’s had it out for Baer. He’s probably done as the face of ownership imo
“My wife and I had an unfortunate public argument related to a family member and she had an injured foot and she fell off her chair in the course of the argument,” Baer later told San Francisco Chronicle reporter Evan Sernoffsky, adding that the matter was “resolved.”
the way I read that is that she had an injured foot and maybe that contributed to her falling off the chair. Why disclose that in a statement otherwise?
How an injured foot causes you to fall out of a chair is a bit mysterious.
Uh yeah unless someone is trying to grab something out of your hand. Thing is, falling backward could have easily caused a lot more serious injury. If she’s OK, he’s lucky. But, she is big in social circles here and is involved in lot of charitable (high end) events with other prominent SF socialite women. And here she is on the ground after struggling with hubby.
Larry was also heard to say to his wife:”We should go to counseling.”
Jon Miller raises the video and Baer’s statement first thing on the air tonight. The Giants are going to go all out to deal with this.
ok I read what you guys said about the foot and I see your point now. So he’s saying the injured foot contributed to this. That’s kinda silly, he was wrestling the phone away from her. Not sure what the foot could have done to cause her to fall out of the chair.
Baer should probably take it easy on the statements, this second one isn’t much better than the first one….
What’s wrong with that statement? Looks pretty good to me.
As for the foot issue, take it from a guy who goes through life with chronic foot pain, if you have a foot that can’t bear much weight, it sure as hell can contribute to taking a fall like that.
Might have been the reason for her screaming as well.
i just think he’s making too big of a deal about this. He’s getting pressure to, obviously, but he’s making it look worse than it was with multiple statements. Let the dust settle a little. I stand by my original and current take on this: This is completely overblown. He didn’t hit her, slap her, or really do anything physical to her She fell off a chair, he didn’t push her off of it.
Baer probably will get a promo out of this, maybe Grab Your Partner’s Phone Musical Chairs night.
I think Pam would like to put her foot 🦶 in Larry’s mouth about right now..
and one thing I agree with GH about: they are in a public place, he’s a public figure, and she’s screaming like a hyena over what?????
more startled than hurt I’m sure. Still, he reaches over to grab the phone and she loses balance and winds up on the ground. She was just sitting there although apparently they had quite a discussion over whatev, next thing the chair she’s in is tipped over.
KO is skewering Baer pretty hard in earlier tweets but he worded this one is a way I can support: “the civil treatment of women”. This was most definitely uncivil treatment of a woman. And Baer acted like a fool going after his phone like that. Standard rule in my life, you wanna see what’s in my phone, go ahead.I have nothing to hide and if I did there wouldn’t be anything in my damn phone about it. The only reason I have a passcode on it is in case it gets stolen.
It’s kind of a unique situation. Who handles PR for your organization when your PR guy steps in it and tracks it all over the carpet?
Shit like this goes on behind closed doors every 10 seconds.
Total nonsense. The wife carries on like a fuckin’ mental patient and Baer’s a fuckin’ jerk-off…
Kawakami already has an article about the incident on The Athletic. He thinks the scream is the biggest thing.
I completely agree with him as I mentioned above.
Duggar making shit happen!
Melancon in mid-season form.
I gotta laugh. You know I love my guy Melancon!
I’m not sure what to make of this short vid.
Whatever happened there, and what motivated Baer to really wrestle that phone away, certainly wasn’t cool from a PR standpoint, that’s for sure. For the team, and especially for him. If she broke her foot, uh, really not good for everyone concerned.
I’ve been as tough on this dude as anybody on here over the years, he’s always seemed to me to be over the line smarmy and disingenuous. But, the only limited conclusion I can draw is that this is a sneak peek towards proving my suspicions of his true personality. I don’t think I’m out on a limb saying that if he’s a player, the Giants suspend his ass.
I agree, he speed walked outta there alone — leaving his wife still there — had to get outta dodge because he knew the phone vids were rolling. That abandon-the-scene move was Not a good look, not at all. He immediately realized the bad PR meter was jumping off the charts, and bolted. So much for the facade of gentleman pillar of civic duty.
This thing is blowing up in public. I was in my car and heard people calling into 95.7, that was the topic. A couple of folks said they were there and saw the thing go down, a couple of guys apparently not on the vid were rolling towards them to help “the lady” after they heard the screaming and saw the tussle. I’m guessing, yes, but this may not be the first such altercation between them. Maybe the first one in public.
The Giants need him on sabbatical for the rest of Spring Training. Go to Phoenix and hole up incommunicado at a gated spa center somewhere near Camelback. At the very least, the public will view Baer differently from now forward…
well you hit on that in next to last paragraph, in other words if this how Baer handles his biz in public…
what preceded it was a long and very loud argument that went on for 20 minutes, and this is how it ends.
Not good.
now her statement:
Through “her” attorney? Hmmm…
How about Pauly’s theory about 2 minutes in?
Melancon is in mid-season cruddy form.
Ha! I didn’t see Mac’s post.
“Cruddy” was a nice touch.
zum, I see the box showing 2 hits allowed includng one bomb, and 1 earnie. How’d his stuff look?…
He was pitching to contact. Hard contact.
Very hittable….again. The last out was a deep drive to centerfield on a hanging curve.
Ugh. If this dude craters all spring training, I think ZMan will cut him loose. Melonhead is not ZMan’s bust, he’s somebody else’s bust…
Agree, Tom. We’ve all cited a few bad contracts that likely will just have to be eaten, and I’m guessing Melonhead’s will be the first. Just… let it go.
Cruddy I assume…
. Yeah, he didn’t hit her, yell at her, etc. But he’s made to look like he cares more about the stupid phone than he does about the welfare of his wife, especially knowing she’s *injured*, and he “allows” her to fall to the ground. Anytime your wife falls to the ground while you seem to be more interested in just grabbing that phone, fuhgetaboutit. Sabattical? He just might be done, or at least moved to behind the scenes after this…. Weird, man.
Great post.
Watching the G league warriors vs. Memphis. Man you collect all the bricks you could rebuild the Carrier Dome.
Most possessions by both teams feature one pass and a forced shot with a lot of dribbling. The Warriors team has 28 points midway through the 2 nd quarter. Jevon Carter of West Va is on other team and looks pretty good but he ain’t passing the ball either.
It’s kinda like the b-ball equivalent of you can’t walk off the island. You can’t score and help the ppg (points per game avg.) if you don’t shoot.
A Beede sighting.
Beede’s four-seamer hit 97 most of the time, and his curve was sharp and nasty — one was as slow as 78. But that four-seamer, man that thing is STRAIGHT. He gave up a double, no runs. He looks a million times better than last year, imo. But I’m not sure that’s enough.
Glad to hear there’s possibly some potential there with young Beeduh. But yeah, straight fastballs, no good. Hope he can learn to bend it a bit. Too many bad memories of Felix Rodriguez. Or more recently, Stricknine….
For some reason the name Tomko occurs to me. His second inning tonight hasn’t been going so well.
Eek, Tomko, there’s a name haven’t heard for awhile. And for some reason, “Tomko” brings to mind Pierzinski. Didn’t they go at it in the clubhouse at one point? One of Tomko’s better moments….
Nice work by Vincent to get outta that jam. This is the first ST game I have really sat down to watch this year.
Vincent didn’t look like he was comfortable until he had two on. Give up two hits, strike out the side. Not bad.
Center field in Scottsdale is crazy. You really have to get into one to poke it out there.
Shaw hit the shit outta that one. Wow.
Fucking crushed it…
Absolutely, Chi. I doubt that ball has come down yet.
It’s obviously too early to try to project win totals for this squad, since of course *this squad* likely ain’t gonna be anything like the team that plays the games later in the season. But I’m curious about some of the more optimistic projections here so far. Last year’s team won 73 games. Not sure how they get to .500 considering I can’t really see any moves that have been made to strengthen the team except maybe the bench. I don’t know that I’d go as low as Steve’s 65 wins projection, but maybe close to that, as I don’t see anything that’s happened to make me think they’ll do any better than last year’s 73. At this point. Actually I’m looking forward to the work in progress that this team will be, and it doesn’t really even matter what they’re win total will be, for me, this season.
BOOM!
Fun game to watch.
I’ll be surprised if we get to 70 wins. Like I said whe this started, Baer’s fucked.
I think so too.
Kinda also wondering what was on that mobile phone. Maybe “Hangover” type pics. Maybe what happened in Vegas didn’t exactly stay in Vegas afterall….
(Last comment) and I’ve tried to clearly understand what Baer says, but can’t really make it out. “I’m fucked”? “What the fuck”? If it’s the first, then, yeah dude… A bit surprising and sad for the guy, but there was some real “true colors” showing in that clip… Their marriage might be fine, but he can’t be any kind of “face” of the organization after that, I would guess.
What was the over-under on SF’s first spring training casualty being the CEO?
Now that’s funny.
I think it’s likely Baer is done as CEO of the Giants.

Poodle-man may have had headphones on, listening to music.
It looks like they’re sitting in a parking lot. What’s up with that place?
I was wondering if someone would mention that.
And he dressed for it…
In the context of the #metoo era, you all are right, this isn’t such a big deal: no one’s claiming Baer is a spouse abuser or sexual harrasser, and of course, as Loo said, stuff like this happens all the time. The problem for Baer, as CEO of the organization, is that the world viewing this video sees a man who a) has a bit of a temper and displays it in public, b) seems to have more regard for a phone than his wife who has toppled to the ground, and c) walks away from his wife while muttering the f-word. Maybe their marriage is full of this but overall it’s fine and his wife will downplay it and they’ll handle it privately, but the image of the organization is NOT full of this, and thus they’ll likely have to act in some way. Man, life can turn on a dime…
For those that missed it, this is the Chris Shaw HR that cleared ALL the fences.
Awesome bomb, thx Bozo.
Flav the prescient strikes again:
What are the chances nobody gets hurt?
Uh, somebody’s rep is on the 60 day DL. Maybe irrevocable waivers or just designated for assignment.
