A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Great Win

Solano and Yaz. And how bout that boater risking it all and diving in for the splash hit? At .500 even with Pence at .000 and Pablo at 300 (pounds).

I shot this very lame video on the way back into town yesterday but if you are a Giants fan who hasn’t ever been out to the park it’ll give you a good idea of where Oracle is located in relation to The City.

GREAT comeback win for this scrappy-ass team. At 6-2, I had little hope. Dick’s blast brought it to 6-3, and then SoLongo with his blast to tie it. They MUST find a way to keep Solano in the lineup pretty regularly even after the remainder of the Bore Four return. Yaz with two in the drink, and yes, it was sweet seeing the dude go into the water to get his game-winner.

idk, closing the arches didn’t seem to have anything to do with that one. Kuiper knew it right away, Miller too.
Interesting that Solano bomb and that last one from Yaz both off same handed pitchers, and that Kapler left them and Dickerson in all night regardless. So maybe less platooney stuff and Giants better hitters are in there all the time going forward.
That Yaz bomb is up there with Gillaspie shot into Mets bullpen I could watch forever.

That guy in the kayak named Dave ended up with both of Yaz’s splash hits even if the second one landed him and his kayak flipped over in the drink!
Pretty impressive getting both balls, Congrats Dave!

Magic moments. This time yesterday I never would have even thought I’d be saying this. Had I been thinking we’ll win this, it would more likely have been something like Cueto throwing six innings of two-run ball and the team pulling it off -3-2 with a single-shot homer and some fine bullpen work.

With that marvel of a come-back, it seems we all musta been pleasantly shocked. After all, how long has it been that the team didn’t wilt and die with the starter being blasted and down by four? Recent years Giants comebacks have been about as common as bicuspids on a Rhode Island Red. We laid all too many eggs…scrambled. But that get up and go got up and done it.

Looks like this bunch has got heart. Clean out some of the dead-wood (we can–again–blame institutional loyalty to those 3 even-year rings and flags. Go out with the one who took you to the dance. ) Unfortunately, baseball doesn’t always work that way. Remember when Boston hit the cellar the year after bringing home the marbles and in that off-season they promptly cleaned house? Giants didn’t do that in ’17, ’18 and ’19. Magic can only carry you so far. After that narrow loss to the Cubs in ’16 the handwriting was on the wall. So here we are, amidst a massive re-build after three years of floundering.

Today is a new day. Last night signaled the starting-gun of the turnaround. Lottsa obstacles along the way, though, with loaded teams throughout both Western divisions. There will be stumbles, particularly in assembling a viable rotation. Way things look from here is that Webb COULD emerge as our ace by season’s end. Cueto? Who knows? Likely better than last night, though. Smardj? Mentioned it after his melt-down. Can we even dream of him being a reliable starter in this, his last pre-F.A. season? He might struggle along and become a halfassedly reliable 3-5 inning starter, but don’t hold your breath. Too bad Beede is out for the season. Will Smyly and Gausman earn their keep? Question marks. We have a couple young starters in the system who did fine at Richmond. One or both of them are not unlikely to get the call before September’s end.

Inner core hitters pretty much I.D.ed themselves last night. Three or four others look to contribute on a somewhat haphazard basis. By channeling his inner Bochy,, Kapler may get a fairly decent bullpen sorted out. Nice to see Crawford recover some of his pride last night. He may need to be semi-platooned, but could contribute. Bart should show up sooner or later–hopefully the former.

What we do know after last night is that this getting it together bunch does have spirit. They are guys on the make–not a bunch of lollygaggling quitters. You know what? Ups and downs all over the place, but after six in the books, this season could be fun.

Ya gotta hand it to the best dumpster-diver in all of baseball–the Z-Man. Zaidi pulled Yaz, Dick and Solano off the trash-heap. Yes, a lotta credit hasta go to the scouts and evaluators as well, keeping Mr. Z posted on possibilities, but if this team has begun to resurrect its magic, my hat’s off to the magician who pulls rabbits outta his hat.

In relation to Stix’s 8:20, I think we can all agree the Giants should have burned it down after that loss to the Cubbies in ’16. And now we deal with the current BS and slow-go on the rebuild.

But with some of the kids we have in the pipeline, I truly am looking forward to ’22. Next year will be another transition year, as we’ll still have some of the dead weight.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 30, 2020 at 10:24 am

Hmmmmm. This at least answers the question, how fast do you test positive after being exposed? They had all tested negative the day before.

And what pisses me off is it takes 10 – 15 days to get a test result back while these guys get instant results and tests on demand.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 30, 2020 at 10:32 am

my son got tested yesterday at the Allen Temple Baptist Church drive-thru in East Oakland and they promised results within “2-8 days.” Meanwhile, he and his girlfriend are quarantined at their home. Symptoms are scary, but don’t seem to be worsening. Actually sounds like what caused WilcoJoe to get tested recently, as he described it here. There’s really no excuse for these long delays in providing results except for lack of federal leadership and deployment. Rich and powerful people get results very quickly. As to everyone else — let them eat covid.

And from Baggs: Tonight’s game was just the Giants’ fifth four-HR home game in 13 seasons in the post-Barry Bonds era.

  23. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on July 30, 2020 at 10:42 am

Bozo neither would have been the best choice. Every AB by Pence (or Pillar) is an at bat not taken by a young guy who needs them, in a lost year. J Davis has power. We need power. He should be in the lineup 6 days a week. If he gets <100 ABs SF goes in to next year still not knowing if he is MLB caliber. A travesty

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 30, 2020 at 11:36 am

My gut says Zaidi brought in vets like Pence, Panda and Flores to hopefully catch lightning in a bottle or have tradeable parts if the team was out of contention at the deadline. I have to think the possibility of getting young guys for older guys that he got on the cheap is probably worth more to Zaidi than 20 or so extra ABs for Davis.

I agree that Davis is an exciting player with all the tools but I don’t think the season or rebuild stops with him. Unless Pillar was asking for a no-trade clause he would have made more sense than a player who on his best days, could only have been a bat off the bench or a DH.

I wouldn’t have minded Pillar so much as at least he can play in the field, and it wasn’t that much money. I mean, they went out and got Flores so they wanted some kind of immediate help. But these vets need to be told NOW that this isn’t about them. It is about the new talent. If they don’t like it they can walk. Claim COVID. Whatever. They should not be getting this many starts.

I think it would take a perfect storm of all these things to move Belt or Crawford this season:

        1) They would have to be healthy.
        2) They would have to be playing reasonably well.
        3) A contending team would have to suffer a season ending injury to their 1B or SS.
        4) They would have to waive their no trade clause (Belt – limited / Crawford – full)
        5) Giants would have to pick up a very substantial portion of their salary due next season.

I just can’t see it this year.
Maybe in 2021, when both contracts are in their final year…

    Looks like a new lineup:

    Yaz CF
    Dickerson LF
    Solano 2B
    Belt 1B
    Longoria 3B
    Sandoval DH
    Crawford SS
    Heineman C
    Duggar RF

    Gausman RHP.

Solano had to be in there.

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on July 30, 2020 at 2:58 pm

Belt at cleanup? Been ragging on this for years. He’s simply not an RBI man. Check the stats. Evidently Kap didn’t do that. As a rather better than average OBP hitter (he draws walks like shit draws flies) BB9 should be in the two-hole.

Pablo at DH? Solano or Flores would be better most games. By season’s end, Sandoval may well be a threat off the bench in late innings. Only thing Duggar has over Davis is more MLB experience. Hell, for that matter so does Pence. In fact, unless its a L-R thing, Dick and Belt should be switched around. That way Dick is below the Belt. Makes sense to me anyway.

  42. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 30, 2020 at 2:19 pm

Assume Craw gets the nod due to his 3 hits last night. He probably would have started regardless.

I would swap Wilmet with Pablo as DH. Or Slater. Really, anyone…Pablo hasn’t done shit of late. He needs to sit his fat ass down for a while, IMO.

    • sandog's avatar sandog said, on July 30, 2020 at 2:37 pm

      Agree with Wilmet for Pablo.
BTW, I watched Wilmer play a bunch with the Mets and never saw his fielding be as bad as it has been here. Hoping it is just a temporary nerves thing while adjusting to a new team. He ain’t Brooks Robinson, but he’s not as bad as he has shown here.
Mac/Loo—thoughts on that as east coasters who know him well?
Duggar in RF is also a bit odd to me as I think he is the best CF we have had in years, but Yaz is on a roll, so I am fine with not disturbing his groove.

Great point by Baggs today saying it may be time to view Yaz as a foundational piece–even if he is about to turn 30.

    Sorry Kat.
    Not dazzled by Dubon either…

    • sandog's avatar sandog said, on July 30, 2020 at 3:09 pm

Of course he’s not a great prospect. There’s a reason the Brewers gave him up to us for bullpen depth, BUT he does seem to have some tools and we have so few prospects, that he is one guy I am excited to give some AB’s to and see if we maybe get lucky and he can play a little bit.
Same goes for Dubon. I’m not expecting these guys to become stars, but lets see what they got.
You and I thought Yaz was gonna suck too, and he is starting to prove us wrong.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 30, 2020 at 4:18 pm

I think Dubon is going to grow into a nice player. Not a star, as you say sandog, but a solid player who can play multiple position. And no offense Kat, but I feel the same about JDavis re: star quality. I would have liked to seen more of Davis, but he did not garner “everyday consideration” IMO.

He also said that the pure coke he was snorting, one line would last all night, and he used it methodically. Also learned that Keith didn’t mainline heroin but shot it into his muscles. Never knew that was an option. Knew about snorting but not in the muscle.

About Davis yes he might got off to a slow start but dumping him after only 12AB’s is silly.
You have to have a longer choke collar then that.
Maybe cause Duggar has more experience with 400+ more AB’s but that doesn’t make him a better player. And with a history of injury problems to boot.Hope he holds up, but track record says no..

Not sure what Davis will do in Sac to make him better. He tore up AAA, so he needs to see MLB pitching every day to see how he can handle it, get familiar with it, develop some confidence. 12 ABs is not enough to decide to send him packing…
