A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Win Today, Salvage The Week

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 9, 2020

Man, ONE OUT AWAY from a coveted QS. So close. Feel bad for Pence, nobody would feel worse about blowing it in that situation. But, it happens.

Jon Heyman called Kershaw the best pitcher in history (or something like that i was too busy laughing to read it closely).

Well, we got our one reliable pitching performance for the week. It is back to the rosary beads today….

I’ll tell you, I must be like some kind of savant or something, I don’t know how I keep earning these prestigious Trump awards…..

I feel bad for Pence also but so far he seems much more of a liability than an asset. I have seen outfielders loose balls now and then but i have never seen one so far off as last night. My guess is he was distracted and not paying the attention needed to make the play. That is the one thing I loved about Willie Mays he knew where the ball was going just from the sound of the bat. But then again what do i know.

Still a productive outing from Cueto despite how it ended. See how gausman battles Buehler today. Expect return of Craw and Belt see who gets day off. Lot of other good pitchers going today–Morton deGrom Stras Marquez of Rox Lamet (vs. Bum) for Padres.

Pitching still seems ahead of hitters…even on LA Bellinger and Muncy below Mendoza line. A’s big guns haven’t gotten rolling yet either Chapman Semien Olson hovering around .200. Their pitching has been holding down Stros in this series…hopefully they don’t wakeup at home when Giants get to town.

Yeah, four shutouts on Friday and three more yesterday. On the other end there’s the Pirates, who have given up 28 runs in two games vs. the Tigers.

Shea said Bishop is back in camp in Sac, Bailey and Bart working at 1b plus C, and Davis “progressing with his swing and driving ball better” according to Kapler. “Things are trending in the right direction” he said.
so we’ll see if there are any roster moves for position players

Bore core or not, let’s take the series and go take a couple from the Stros (3-7 in their last 10).

Really have to question the crack medical staff &Kappy on they’re handling of both Shark & Cueto. Shark mentioned you his credit( most pitchers won’t fess up) that he had difficulty even loosing up in the BO before his start, and yet they sent him out with the predictable results of getting hammered. And even then they wouldn’t pull him as the onslaught continued!
Now he’s on the DL and it’s probably the end of his Giants season and career with a bum shoulder.

Same goes with not pulling Cueto, who obviously convinced the trainer and Kap he was still fine when obviously he wasn’t which turned out to be both his knee and a blister.Grow a pair Kap, most managers would of pulled him in that situation but not you!!

    Now down 2 starters,Shark&Smily
expect a Trevor Cahill sighting soon since Suarez is best suited for a worn down pen right now..

Can we please get Jaylin Davis back up here now?
I know he can ketch a fly ball over Kapler’s stud man crush guy Pence and hit better than.063..

Yeah, the games we have won have been despite the managing unprowess. And he’s mismanaged at least 3 losses. I had no preconceived notion about Mr. Kotter, but I’m falling off his wagon. He sounds great, and gives a good post-game interview, but his pitcher handling is completely awful. Seeing Pence get pitched around in the 1st inning was another indictment of his lineups.

Of course with a righty today, we get Belt and Crawfish. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Gasman isn’t our worst starter, but I have little faith in this one with the likely lineup,

You think the Giants would have a better record right now with a different manager?

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 9, 2020 at 1:25 pm

I do. I think it would be possibly three or four games better if they had someone like Bob Melvin. Oh, and by the way, his current contract with the A’s ends after 2021. The Giants should go after him, IMO.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 9, 2020 at 2:50 pm

Yes. I think his pen mismanagement has cost us a couple game. And very well could have blown last night’s game.

I do if they landed a Joe Giradi who was available this off season. And would of cut Pence and Panda by now who are wasting LU spots. Are even if they could lure Bob Melvin after next season, hey he played for the Giants and is a master at the analytical shit. Zman has ties with him from Oakland days, he would be a great fit.,

Again, does Kapler secretly still wear Doghouse bleu in his heart of hearts? What’s with this lineup–not that it differs greatly from previous ones, but we’re nearly a third of the way through the season now at game 17. Isn’t it time for K. to face the facts: Cleanup: Except on rare occasions Belt is not an RBI man, though with his propensity for drawing walks he has long had a high OBP. So once more–he should bat 2nd or 8th. Would it be too big a trauma for Kapler to switch him around with Dickerson, who should replace Sandoval in the DH “position”, as Pablo seems to be in full decline mode. In my book Slater should lead-off, with the Yazmanian Devil batting third and (oops), Solano at cleanup and Dickerson 6th.

Okay, so now we’re all confused. Bear with me: (1. Slater, (2. Belt, (3. Yaz, (4. Solano, (5 Longo, (6. DickDick, (7. Craw, (8. Dubon or Ruf and (9. Heinie. This lineup would be front-loaded with uncertainties among the back three. Pablo is plunking his glutes on the pine. No dead-wood in sight. L-R? What the hell–strong up-top and no automatic outs. Ferris Buehler is a tough cookie, so max him the best you can and don’t allow him to squeeze outta a jam and walk a man to face dead-wood and get outta the inning unscathed.

No, I’m not asking to manage anything more taxing than my daily diet. But we can criticize, can’t we? As probably the most concentrated core of Giants fanatics, we Flappers have the duty of keeping management’s feet to the fire. Many sportswriters dare not truly let it out, because unlike myself they are not recovering journalists and hafta maintain access while toeing the company line.

It was impossible not to feel bad for Pence last night.
I think the only reason they didn’t release him after the game was because they are being nice and don’t want him to go out like that. Maybe after a dinger or two he’ll get DFA’ed simultaneously with Panda to make it look like a youth movement.

Fairly not too bad start for Gausman. 45 pitches @ 3 IP–Ferris Buehler @ a very tidy 38. Second time through the lineup will be the test for our guy. Should he falter, facing their 2,3,4 hitters and two of them get on with zero or one outs, K should bring in Big Shaun or Menez, both former starters, who should be able to go three if on their game. Tampax Bay came up with an interesting strategy in utilizing 3 inning stints where opposing batters could not bear down on a starter second time around. From his earlier performances, Gausman looks good for the first few frames…but from there on, who knows?

73 pitches through six full. That, gentlemen is not only a doubly certified quality start, but also was remarkably thrifty. Average of just over a dozen pitches per inning. Extremely thrifty. Teams fully in the hunt will be burning the wires down to Zaidi and his sidekick as August winds down. Giants could rebuild rapidly if they play their. cards right over these next three weeks. Starting pitching is the number one quest for the slew of contenders. Running out the likes of Pence and Panda and to a lesser degree, Crawdaddy, does not indicate probability of contention DURING the post-season.

You give them the walk there ( which it should of been)and then bring in the Lefty!
Austin Barnes is the worse hitter in baseball, so I guess they go with Taylor who’s still a gettable out with the sacks full

Rather a bit early–but I called it. Two men on base and bring in a designated fireman. Two sharp singles indicated Gausman was gassed. Then, like Unca pointed out, putting in Rogers after his heroic stint last night was not a solution.

“Well if he cost us 3 games, do the math”

So he gets no credit for any of the wins?
No credit for wins, and only blame for losses. Tough crowd.

They won last night despite Mr. Kotter’s efforts. He doesn’t know how to manage pitchers. He didn’t in Philly and he doesn’t here. Give him credit for the wins? Sure, but he’s blown games.

I never said he didn’t deserve the wins.

Gausman was fine today, giants wasted it getting by not hitting.

he’s hurt, probably trying to be a gamer because he doesn’t want to get paid for not working. But this is one of many reasons I didn’t want them to resign this guy. WAY too many innings on that arm. We got the best years out of him. Be thankful and then be more thankful we didn’t get stuck with him for this big contract.

I don’t think managers, including Kapler, have a feel yet of using relief pitchers with the new rules this year. Managers are used to playing the percentages with matchups of righty vs righty and lefty vs lefty. Rogers had success last year as ROOGY. But now he has to face at least three batters. Rogers is a gimmick pitcher, I like him facing one batter, not a series of batters. So with today’s COVID rules, I don’t see him being effective.

I thought the Giants were all about analytics. WilleDav is exactly right. Analytics 101 says you bat Flores for Sandoval everytime in that situation.

You know when a batter doesn’t have it is when they don’t make loud outs. All they do is just turn the bat over slowly and hit weak grounders, popups or strikeouts. It appears to me Sandoval, Pence, and Crawford are at that stage in their careers. Also Longoria has been the 7th worst hitter in MLB since the Giants got him. The other six players are weak hitting shortstops.

Dubon is hungry, get him in the line-up. Flores looks like a professional hitter, get him in the line-up. Bart is chewing at the bit, get him in the line-up.

Sad to hear Paul Westphal has brain cancer. Tremendous player in his day saw him torch Warriors in his days with Suns.
Dunno how to get it over here, but I found box for game I witnessed at Oakland March 12 1980.
Suns of westphal don buse Truck Robinson Walter Davis Alvan Adams shot .696 from floor on 2pts and 3-4 on 3s. Westphal went for 31 on 13-17 plus only 3 he took. Just a machine of efficient offense. Davis hit 8-10 from floor running off screens from Truck, alvan Adams consummate high post shooter and passer.

“A new report from Sports Illustrated indicates that bad news is coming for college football. According to Pat Forde and Ross Dellenger, a series of high-level meetings among the Power 5 conferences this week will likely result in postponing fall sports until 2021.”

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 9, 2020 at 6:03 pm

      Makes sense to me.
MLB is having trouble keeping paid players from violating the social distance rules.
How are you going to do that with 90+ unpaid 18-22 year olds?
They cannot sell all tickets, you have to have either no fans or a few fans in the stands, so you lose the gate, but get TV money. Wait to spring and get the gate (maybe) and the TV money…

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 9, 2020 at 6:12 pm

Some have pondered, without fans in the stands, do college football and college basketball have an ethical reason to exist that season? If the illusion of college sports as a rah-rah part of the college experience for students and student-athletes tries to maintain, do college sports have a legitimate reason to exist as a TV-only money-making enterprise?

i don’t think he’s won a playoff game. The A’s have been great in the reg season duds in the WC games. They can certainly change that but that’s who they have been the last few years.
