A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Playoff Push

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 8, 2020

I have no idea how many games remain. All I know is that we are .500 and have a 58% chance to slide into one of the “walk of shame” post season slots.

After all these years of boring nonsense, I will take that.

Our schedule isn’t easy, but Rockies harder. In the last 2 weeks they have 2 vs A’s, then 4 vs Dodgers, then 4 against SF IN SF. They finish with 3 vs AZ on the road

After the Rockies we finish with 3 at home vs SD. SD better than us, but in a unigue position almost certainly to be tweaking their rotation as they are a lock already for 2nd place in the west, and can’t move up or down.

Giants are currently the #7 seed in the NL. Every win is precious in the mini-season.

  5. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 8, 2020 at 7:54 am

Giants scored 4 runs each of last 3 games and won them all, as they only gave up 9 combined. Occasional blips such as Coonrod giving up another blast, but pitching held AZzzzz down enough for Ws. My god they are bad and now into tank mode after solid season last year.

Woodstock– me and buddy from HS saw as soon as it came to Guild in Menlo Park, fabulous. Santana definitely a highlight, always dug Richie Havens in Handsome Johnny days too. Country Joe yada yada good stuff

From CBS sports page…It is important to note MLB will not play any tiebreaker games this season to allow for an expedited postseason schedule. All ties with be resolved mathematically, even if two teams finish with identical records for the No. 8 seed. Here’s how MLB will break ties this year:

    Head-to-head record (if applicable).
    Intradivision record.
Record in final 20 division games (plus one until the tie is broken).

We have played better in “2nd half’ than Miami and they don’t play rockies or us so we look good in a tie against them ?

Gausman now up to #37 on bill james starting pitcher rankings. right behind Charlie Morton Blake Snell Mas Tanaka and Strasburg. Proving to be great pickup so far @$9 mil and maybe in line for extended contract. Loves it here so…

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on September 8, 2020 at 8:10 am

3 years around $30 million seem fair?

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 8, 2020 at 8:27 am

3 years/$30 million is a good offer, IMO.

      • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on September 8, 2020 at 10:12 am

I would think he sees how much of a plus it is pitching in SF. Maybe another team would give him 2 years $15 mill per max so 3 years and $30 seems like the right price point. I am still a pro-Bauer guy and with Smardj’s departure, think it is doable to add a pitcher at Bauer’s top tier level/price.

A Bauer/Cueto/Gausman/Webb top 4 with serviceable lefty as the fifth starter would keep us competitive next year and then the potential for 2022 sans Cueto but maybe the lefty Seth Corry is ready to step is as a #2 and Heliot Bishop and Bailey potentially as everyday starters or Bailey being more of a utility guy around the infield (dont think Luciano is up by then but hope to be wrong) and hopefully supplemented with a couple of free agents at the Correa/Kris Bryant level post-contract departures of Crawford and Belt and Posey’s and Longoria’s soon to be expiring deals should allow two big time free agent signings for 2022…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 8, 2020 at 8:22 am

i’m not surprised by his success. All you have to do is watch him pitch and see that his stuff is electric. He’s been a godsend for the team.

  8. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 8, 2020 at 8:55 am

I was pretty skeptical coming in–he put good numbers in relief last season after getting hammered earlier as SP.
Off season will be interesting for him (and maybe Cueto too)–how many teams would bid on a guy like Gausman and offer $30 mil for x amount of years off a good 6 weeks of pitching in this funky season?

  9. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 8, 2020 at 9:03 am

If Gausman wants something like a Smarj contract, I say pass on that.

It would also be nice if not after this season but at least by next offseason when I believe Yaz will already be 30 and Giants still having couple years of options still on the table table for him that the Giants buy out those options and add a couple years so he can make a little better money at what will be a limited career. No team will ever give him a 3 year deal once he hits free agency…

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 8, 2020 at 11:36 am

Yaz just turned 30 i should no we share the same birthday Aug,23 just 34 years apart damm I’m getting old..
He is a very youthful 30 though, u can see it in his all-round approach.Who’s been a better hitter with 2 strikes and a runner in scoring position? Not many if any, kid is an all round gamer. So it took along time to get to the majors same could be said about Roy Hobbs..

Yaz had over 2,500 minor league AB’s which is incredible in this day and age.But he stuck with it, honed his skills and has some talk about MVP( won’t win it but it’s a nice story) that’s pretty cool for a kid off the scrap pile that Z got for nothing. Pay Yaz he was a bargain basement deal anyway..

  15. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 8, 2020 at 11:06 am

I love Yaz. He is under full team control through 2022, and hits arbitration in 2023. I think they will take care of him and ensure he retires a Giant.

So, I don’t see the need to do any contract gymnastics with him. If he produces in ‘21 and ‘22 as he has recently, he will get rewarded by the Giants, IMO.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 8, 2020 at 11:18 am

Yaz is a bit of a red-a##, but he does bring competitive fire, and every team needs a few of those guys. You don’t need a whole team of guys like that, but a few is a good balance. Guys like Craw and Posey are quiet leader types, but it’s good to have a few fiery guys, too.

OF is going to get younger going forward so Yaz could serve as perfect vet mentor and role model.

Green had a chance to do that for GS this year and add to his game—instead he did the exact opposite, took the money and run and hid. Media here loves him, ignores his shortcomings (poor shooting decision making and continued useless ranting at refs and all the Ts) and his took his side vs. Durant who is far superior player.

Yes, YaZmaTaZ has established himself as a prime building-block and Bart now seems to be coming right along. Solano has developed into a pleasant surprise and I do like Dubon’s enthusiasm, coupled with the feeling that he will mature nicely. Slater and Dickerson should be good for awhile as long as they can remain healthy. Upcoming free-agents include maybe a couple of second-sackers who might get a good looking-over by Z & H. In other words, the foundations seem to be coming into focus in anticipation of incomings in ’22.

Looking up stats can be fun. Caleb Barager, our prime vulture and possible fireman is tied with several in wins at five. Also sporting 5 victories is one Clayton Kershaw. Max Scherzer trails with four.

  17. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 8, 2020 at 11:50 am

I think there pretty set at 2nd base Stix..
You can throw a bone 🍖 to Solano,Flores, the super utility kid and best glove Robertson,
U even have the kid Zman stole from the Angels Will Wilson ( only 22 though) who plays SS/2B and
might get the crack as Crawdaddy’s eventual replacement before Lucky Luciano who’s still only 19.
And don’t forget Dubon who played 2nd last year and some SS.
If anything it will be 3rd base where they really need the replacement going forward to replace Longo..

  18. Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on September 8, 2020 at 11:57 am

Wilson was some ways from being a steal as SF was obliged to pay off Cozart’s hefty hangover at something like $13 big ones to get him. Each of the four guys you cited could quite possibly play third, but granted, we’re a bit short on prime prospects for the hot-corner in the pipeline.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 8, 2020 at 12:21 pm

But the Angels had just paid him $3M draft signing bonus, so on paper perhaps the accountants would cancel that much. Btw, I think I saw the other day that the $7M plus the Giants bonused up for Bart in 2018 (before Zaidi took over) was the largest draft amt ever paid for a position player to that date. Such money doesn’t add to the luxury tax so the accountants might discount it a bit.

  19. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 8, 2020 at 12:41 pm

Decisions about next season of course revolve around many things including payrolls, but 2 I wonder about would be size of rosters for next year, and whether DH will be universal.

It’s unfortunate but some of giants best hitters are their worst fielders. Kapler has often used 7-8 pitchers to finish 9 innings, something he can possibly get by with over short season but that would overtax any pen eventually, especially if rosters went back to 26.

  20. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 8, 2020 at 2:45 pm

Current Giants are proving the point BF and others made the last several years that to compete, the Giants needed to join in the HR game. They are doing that now. It looks like the ZMan has done a fine job acquiring these dudes that can hit and drive in runs; patience and faith in the ZMan and Kapler has panned out. Takes a while to assess who you’ve got and who can do what. They’ve had some EZ opposition, though, in recent games. We’ll see how the final 20 go with better oppo…

  23. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:03 pm

Giants have definitely joined power game but are only halfway to actually “competing.” All that offense has only brought them to .500 in this funky little season.
Last 3 games vs. AZ –the ones that got them up from being 3 games under .500—they allowed 9 runs total—that’s what made the difference, pitching holding down the other teams enough for them to win. they still allow frightful amount of runs per game, which is why they are only .500
Don’t forget last season they were .475 and 8 games under.
Battle is only half won. Jury still out.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:08 pm

Kapler’s Phils were .500 last year, 81=81, 4th in NL East and 8 games out of a real playoff spot, which got him fired. Ceiling?

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:10 pm

If they had current pitching and Pen, but not hitting HRs, like the last decade+, they’d be crap, not .500…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:10 pm

Z’s first season .475 was an improvement for the Giants from the year before.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:14 pm

I don’t know how Kap will ultimately turn out for the Giants, but I don’t make a big deal about his time with the Phils. A lot of managers and head coaches who end up doing well blew their first gig. I think Belichik was the head coach of the Browns first, of all places.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:17 pm

We could debate how much talent the Phils have had the last few years. Some feel that the talent has been overrated a bit. They are 4 games above .500 right now, I’ll give them that.

  24. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:24 pm

Gyros currently 8th out of 15 in HRs in the NL. At current rate, they’d be headed for hitting 220+ HRs in the season if the season were a regular 162, which would be amazing in light of team history essentially since Bonds left. They’ve been at or near the bottom of HRs in the NL at Oracle since dirt. Some, but not very much, of this big bump, IMO, is due to fences in at Oracle. It’s more the personnel. Middle of the HR pack is a huge improvement…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:33 pm

And, as you’ve posted before, the championships happened because the Giants had historically great pitching in the 3-in-5, especially in the playoffs. With the juiced ball now, the Giants’ approach had to adjust for the changes in the game.

  25. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:32 pm

Take a look at these stretches of Giants from mid August:
5 game losing streak (including infamous Ls vs. A’s): 42 runs given up, 8 runs a game average
7 game winning streak: one 10-8 W the other 6 games 13 runs allowed, 2 a game. Mac posted these I remember. Even with the 8 against that’s still only 21 runs allowed in 7 games. even 3 against.
3 game losing streak right after: 16 runs given up 5 a game which is near where their average is this season.

This isn’t a mirage. Sure offense keeps games competitive and is fun to watch. but when pitching sucks they lose.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:37 pm

A team needs both now. I think everyone here agrees with that.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 8, 2020 at 4:38 pm

The Angels have a scary lineup, but their pitching is lacking, and that team ain’t going anywhere this season.

“Evan Longoria, while his sore right glute is “doing better,” will take a seat for a second straight game and watch Pablo Sandoval handle third base, Gabe Kapler said before the Giants’ opening game of a short, two-game set with the Mariners at Oracle Park. Longoria could play “in a big spot tonight or in an emergency situation,” but otherwise Kapler will stay away from him.

The news was better for Alex Dickerson, whom the Giants penciled (typed?) in as their No. 2 hitter. They wanted to see how he took swings in the cage before asking him to face Ljay Newsome, and apparently he came through OK. Dickerson fouled a ball hard off his right knee Monday, resulting in a contusion and negative X-rays.”

Yaz has fucked up more in 43 games than Fred Lewis ever did over an entire season. As long as he puts up a 900 OPS, I have no problem with it.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 8, 2020 at 7:49 pm

Bold statement James, considering Lewis had no clue what a baseball glove is used for imo.

Yaz has had the worst stretch of major screw ups of any SF OFer I’ve ever seen, Kat.

    I’m not even worried yet.
