A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

No Ring For Baker

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 18, 2020

Not gonna lie, I am sad to see the Astros eliminated. Mostly for Dusty. I was thinking *just maybe* he finally gets his ring. And I think we can put to bed any issues with legitimacy regarding the title this year. These guys are ALL IN and working their asses off. Whoever wins it this year will have earned it. (ps, unless LA wins then it’s a sham title) ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

Anderson goes for Atlanta tonight, while Roberts has listed TBD (torpedo boat destroyer?) as his go-to. He is in a bit of a quandary as Gonsalin would be the probable and his record to date in the PS is pretty bleary. So if Acuna and Freeman do their thing, Braves chances look good.

But baseball is baseball and so who knows till the big girl launches into her aria. Should the LaBumbos pull it out, their potential motivation hike will not be there as the Rays dumped the Stros. Without vengeance on the mind of each and every Dog-hair, they would not be as pumped as if they were facing Dusty’s mites.

Yeah I feel bad for Dusty but only him because he had nothing to do with the scandal and yet some people still wanted to vilify him which was silly. But not for that bunch of cheating asses he had to end up coaching cause there wasnโ€™t another job for him to take.

  3. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 18, 2020 at 9:38 am

Rays will need more hitters beside Aroz to be productive no matter who they face next. They have pitching and defense, if not marquee stars.
Stros did well and aren’t going anywhere. They have lot of young arms and likely only lose Brantley out of the lineup. Dusty did fine job, props to him.

Anyone see fight last night? Pretty boring for first 6 rounds as Loma hardly threw any punches then gradually became more aggressive. Last 3 rounds were great. I didn’t see the huge edge on one scorecard given to Lopez and thought it was close fight. But Lopez was awarded unanimous decision so he’s in control of all belts now and fun to watch.

when we were talking yesterday about nicknames and Twin, made me think of OSF whom we haven’t heard from in a while. He was doomerish on season in general, but it looks like in a week baseball will have successfully concluded 2020 such as it is.
Hope the old guy is OK at any rate.

I was never a fan of TF’s “doomer and polly” labeling of people on the blog. It was an unnecessary divisive thing, in my opinion. But, to TF, I guess it added spice to the blog.

Caught that Spike Lee film of David Byrne’s American Utopia on hbo. I’m no fan of the talking heads. Whenever I hear their cover of Take Me to the River I need to rush to find Al Green’s version asap, as an antidote. But this Byrne show is dazzling in every way. All flaps up.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on October 18, 2020 at 11:14 am

I was never a huge David Byrne fan, but some friends of mine played at his wedding parties that he had on both Coasts (I think he had the band in his movie, True Stories as well). My band was playing a show with them down in Hollywood and David Byrne came into our dressing room to introduce himself, I was at the bar so I missed him and also the Polka Sluts kicking him out. I was told he retreated to a private room to watch the show. Weird Al did come up and sing Beer Barrel with us, There was always something strange when we played in LA.

You’d know bettern me, but I thought the African and Latin Am music was good in the show. I didn’t hear some waring blender “world” music. The sources surged. I thought.

I wasn’t putting the doc down, I didn’t see it, thou I’d imagine with Spike Lee directing it has to be good. I just really don’t know much about David Byrne or the Talking Heads, that’s also not a put down, I just haven’t listened to their stuff all that much.

Caught somewhere past middle brow snob and short of high brow humble, I listened to TH 77 a fair bit when it came out, saw them a couple of times at Sproul Plaza, and then paid less and less attention as they became popular. I finally watched “Stop Making Sense” about a year ago, after having resisted it for a quarter century. They were a really terrific live band at that point.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 18, 2020 at 3:46 pm

I saw the Remain in Light tour, and as good as the Stop Making Sense tour was, the Remain in Light tour was better. Spectacular. Adrian Belew and Jerry Harrison were supposed to play the entire album at Bottle Rock this year but all that was cancelled. Hoping shit comes back when life comes back.

I watched the 20/20 documentary about Lennon that Loo had alerted me to; I recorded it on the DVR. It was well done, and had some new information and interviews about John and Yoko’s life in New York City, and the last day and night of John’s life. The film chose to never name the assassin by name, which was a great choice, and didn’t really focus all that much time on him.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 18, 2020 at 10:59 am

Another hbo doc I caught was Salinger. I’d forgotten that Chapman was a catcher in the rye fanatic and that he justified himself by saying that Lennnon had become a “phony,” in the Holden caulfield meaning of the word. Hinckley apparently also found room for CITR in there with his J Foster fantasies.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 18, 2020 at 1:04 pm

From the 20/20 doc, we learn that Chapman took out his copy of Catcher after he shot Lennon, and was reading it when the police arrived and arrested him. Later at the police station, he told police officers: “I killed myself. I am John Lennon.”
From an article I read a while back: it was a big deal to Chapman that John and Yoko were living the life of the very rich in the Dakota. That seemed hypocritical to Chapman.
And also the song on the Double Fantasy album “Watching the Wheels” triggered a connection in Chapman’s disturbed mind to a playground twirling-wheel scene in Catcher.
Earlier that final evening, John had autographed the album for Chapman. Chapman was inexplicably allowed to hang around in front of the Dakota all day and into the evening. There was a doorman working at the Dakota. For some reason, he didn’t sense something odd about Chapman’s behavior.
From the 20/20 doc: that final day, a woman journalist who had just finished a long interview at the Dakota with John, was confronted by Chapman as she was leaving the building. He kind of aggressively questioned her for a moment until she got out of there. It was clear in the 20/20 interview she’s beaten herself up about it over the years, about not recognizing the danger of Chapman and doing something about it. Hopefully she was able to let that go eventually. There’s no way she could have predicted what would happen. Something like that hadn’t happened to a music star before, I think.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 18, 2020 at 1:11 pm

So yeah, Xoot, Chapman’s judgment of John as a “phony, who had “abandoned his ’60s ideals,” was a huge factor in what Chapman did. All reinforced in Chapman’s mind by his obsession with Catcher in the Rye.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 18, 2020 at 1:36 pm

The LennonNYC doc showed vid of the vigil afterward but bypassed the lurid details, as of assuming we knew or could find out. Strange ending to a film that up to that point pushed deeply into close up details, some unflattering but all too human, of their lives in the USA.

Man, you guys are missing some great shit. Listen to Remain in Light. It is one of the greatest albums ever put to vinyl. Nothing at all like the early stuff. It is full of crazy polyrhythmic stuff and insane guitar playing by Adrian Belew. Talking Heads had like 10 people in the band.

He had left by the time Stop Making Sense came out, and the band was much smaller, but I saw that show at the Greek and it was one of my top 5 shows live. See that movie. Incredibly filmed by Jonathan Demme, and true to the energy they expended. I showed that to my daughter and she was amazed at how long and hard they played.

He opened the show with the stage completely empty. No equipment and no frills.Walked out with a boombox and an acoustic guitar and proceeded to play Psycho Killer. A the song went on the other band members joined him and they rolled out the rest of the equipment.
