A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

May The Streak Continue

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 20, 2020

Here we go, right out the shoot with Glasnow vs Kershunkle. I am picking Tamp Bay for many reasons. Dodger hitters haven’t faced a staff like this all year.

Thank you to Jeff Toobin for ruining zoom calls forever. Now every time I see a dark screen I’m going to be worried. Is he pulling a Toobin? What the fuck man? We are trying to live in a society here. I’d like to think a little decorum can be expected from the people we work with. I love his excuse, too. “I thought my camera was off.” HOW DOES THAT IT BETTER MOTHERFUCKER!?!?!?!? LMAO

I really don’t have a clue about any of the Rays players, so this truly is rooting for any team playing against the Dodgers. Go players to be named later!

beaters gonna beat? things they don’t teach you at harvard? but that one woman on the call was just so hot? inexplicable. The guy’s smart, too. Way back in 2012, he wrote the single best explication of Citizens United I’ve ever read. (“Money Unlimited,” New Yorker.) I’d add the link, but I’m not sure what might pop up.

The Rays can win this thing. I hope they do. A dodgers failure would be a great end to this weird, half-ass season, which I have enjoyed thoroughly.

Rays are gonna need to give Aroz some help. Guys like Lowe Wendle Adames and Meadows didn’t do much at all vs. Houston despite having good seasons in 2020 and for Meadows in 2019. F/G has column showing that should Globe Field suppress bombs, Rays chances improve. They almost let Stros make monster comeback despite crummy 1b Gurriel and weak bottom of order. Dodgers C and 1b can hurt them and so can their bottom order platoon guys like kike Taylor and Joc.

Roberts of course can be a factor, most often to his teams detriment. See when he starts Buehler, game 2 or 3, with idea that he’d go game 6 or 7, and how he manages non Opie/Buehler starts. His pen more suspect too especially at back end.

Snell needs to be better too and last longer/lower pitch count. Neither of his outings vs. Houston went well and that can’t happen vs. LA. Time to out ace whomever he goes against.

Rays are +150 today. VS Kershaw who could easily tank another post season game? Gotta bet that number just on principal.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think the Dodgers are going to wreck ’em. The Rays aren’t going to be able to hit the Dodgers pitchers. I don’t see it going past 5 games.

The Dodgers have better hitting and pitching/defense. But, hey, it’s only 7 games, and there’s no reason for LA’s post season fortunes to turn this particular year.

California vs. Florida? If you put it *that* way . . . .

  11. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 20, 2020 at 11:18 am

First ? fangraphs asks is: “Can the Rays continue to win without some of their best bats hitting?” Mentions Lowe Diaz Adames. Dodgers appear to have more lot more weapons and their conclusion is, “Rays have less room for error when it comes to scoring runs than Dodgers do.”

They also look at how good Aroz has been in post season. He has 7 bombs in 60 plate appearances; Bonds (tied with 2 others) had 8 in 74 PAs in 2002. Aroz has 47 total bases in those 60 PAs, in a group tied for second most with Pablo who had 47 total bases in 70 PAs in 2012. Can this guy stay this historically hot, and get some help?

  12. Winder's avatar Winder said, on October 20, 2020 at 11:32 am

The Rays are in the same position the Giants were in with all of our WS titles. We were unanimous underdogs. How could we withstand the Texas Rangers with all that power, the Detroit Tigers with all that power, and finally a very healthy KC team that were the favorites. The Rays can do it with timely hitting and stellar pitching. This series should be a lot of fun.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on October 20, 2020 at 11:35 am

And, of course mistake free defense.

  13. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on October 20, 2020 at 11:53 am

One big advantage the Dodgers have is that they have played 10 straight games now in Globe Life Stadium in Arlington só they know how all the angles play etc.Not sure why this series isn’t played at a site neither team played at?

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 20, 2020 at 12:03 pm

Big advantage? Naah. It’s not like the Rays haven’t ever played there. And COVID is the answer.

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on October 20, 2020 at 12:50 pm

Texas has the highest rate of covid spread right now. I would not call that stadium a safe environment right now.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 20, 2020 at 2:25 pm

The place is in the bubble and it would be a little nuts to pack both teams off to a different site when they have been handling things fine so far.

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 20, 2020 at 12:00 pm

Yup. Defense is key. And mental mistakes. The Braves killed a couple rallies that last game with horrible baserunning blunters.

  15. xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 20, 2020 at 1:20 pm

I see far too many stories about Choi. He’s sort of like Pablo in the old days. But not nearly as explosive. People are amused. He has made some good plays on D but I don’t trust him overall. I guess he walks a fair amount. I clearly remember him jogging on a grounder and barely making it to 1B despite a gross error in the IF. Arozarena needs to stay hot. But they have potential second tier heroes too–Brosseau eg. And their pen is good. It would be fun to see them take down the bums.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 20, 2020 at 2:26 pm

Hey, if Choi hits 3 HRs in a game, I’m all in on that.

  16. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 20, 2020 at 1:42 pm

Choi did have good series vs. Stros 5-13 with some walks scored 3 and had a HR. Others though…
    Brosseau 0-10 5 Ks.
    Diaz 2-13
    Kiermaier 2-12
    Lowe 4-26 10 Ks
    Meadows 2-22
    Wendle 3-21
Adames 2-17 though with 9 BBs

Fun to think about 2010/12/14 but in those first 2 Giants had already beaten better teams to get to WS. Not so for Rays. I can see their pitching keeping games close but someone has to hit beside Aroz or one of LA guys with power going off will doom them

    • James's avatar James said, on October 20, 2020 at 2:25 pm

The fact that those 7 were all cold is probably a good thing for Rays heading into the series. They aren’t all very likely to stay that way, no matter the LA pitching.

  18. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 20, 2020 at 1:48 pm

I wouldn’t slight Braves either. They took 3 of first 4 vs. LA with some loud contact. Acuna and Freeman are legit MVP candidates, and Ozuna had hella short season, leading league in HRs and rbis iirc. Swanson and small d had hit bombs in previous series for them and Swanson hit couple more. Albies is fine young player too. Injuries to pitching staff hurt them and Smith and couple other pen guys had rough series. Funny, the guy we thought most likely to implode and blow a save and a game wasn’t even a factor.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 20, 2020 at 3:11 pm

mm yes greatest SF giant pitcher for sure. Sad to see what has happened to starting pitching these days. A Braves blogger said if Snitker had tried to take Gibson out in 4th inning of a playoff game with a high pitch count he’d have KO’d him before he crossed the line.

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on October 20, 2020 at 4:23 pm

Gibson didn’t even want to see McCarver visit the mound , so yeah for sure Gibson would of decked Snitker!
Then there’s Marichal going toe to toe with Spahn for 16 freakin innings throwing 243 pitches and Spahn 212 and telling his manager who wanted to pull him,Juan said screw that, if that old man is still out there I’m out here too! Yeah pitchers are pussies today, no doubt about it.

Loduca’s stories about Joe West were hilarious. West sued for libel and far as I can tell Loduca ignored the suit. The court apparently found default and entered judgment for West. All that’s left may be assessment of damages. But how could West suffer damage to a rep that circled the toilet years ago?

Loduca’s stories are hilarious. He should’ve taken it to a jury.

Joe Buck’s enthusiasm for Doritos is consistent with his craven commercial biases generally. Fun fact: Doritos were invented at Disneyland when a tortilla chip vendor figured out what to do with old stale chips that once had been tasty and nutritious. Scavenge. So popular to the Disney fans frito lay no stranger to bad food bought them out.
