A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Will LA Finally Win One?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 27, 2020

Imagine waking up this morning if you’re a Dodger fan. I know it’s not a legitimate season, but when you haven’t won a World Series in 32 years it must feel like one. I talked to a buddy in LA yesterday and he said it’s been so long this will feel like the first one…….

I remember that feeling very well. This was the thread that day…….

https://oneflapdown77.com/2010/11/01/1-more-win/

There are a lot of comments in that thread, you have to hit *older comments* twice to get to the beginning. If you have the time to read through it today, do it, there is some gold in there before the game even starts.

idk, seems inevitable I’m resigned to it. they have by far best pitching in all baseball, plenty of hitters, solid lineup yada yada. Winning this year will certainly have its caveats, but still everyone else had to go through the same BS so zero advantage.

Yes sportsdude, play at plate was close and deserving replay…argument is always the same, though ball beat runner there, did tag get him before hand got underneath to the bag.

Reading Gibson’s excellent “Stranger to the Game” he had some interesting comments about Brock. While being behind him for all the runs his base stealing and speed created, Brock had total disregard for when or how often he stole. Even his teammates used to bug him about taking bags with big lead on scoreboard, and at least once it caused a big brawl in Cincy when Gibson threw high and tight at as he admitted very likeable Tony Perez after Brock tried to steal with 7 run lead and Reds beaned him afterward.

“His attitude was to beat the other team as badly as possible, and that was my kind of baseball. It would have been hypocritical for me to balk at my obligation toward Brock. The chore of retaliation was a small price to pay for having him in the lineup.”

Thx Flav, what a fun read from 2010, WS win numero uno.
As always, props to you for making it possible today to go back and relive what was created at that time and still goes strong.

Chances look better than fair that it will go seven, what with the Snell-Gonsolin matchup. Game seven may really be a state of confusion as the starters are apparently yet to be determined.

It would have to be Buehler for the Dogs.

Rays win tonight, tomorrow Buehler starts off dominant over the first few innings, the Dodgers squander chances to score, the Rays improbably push across some runs, they hold on for the upset. Nothing specific to point to, but we’ve seen something like that scenario play out before . . . .

Thanks for the sentimental journey, Flav and all the magical years since then with our fingertips flapping away through thick and thin, wins and losses, heartbreak and happystance. C’mon guys—how many of you Flappers read through the entire thread with dry eyes?

This was one for the ages after 56 years in the doldrums we rained on the Rangers’ parade and had one ourselves. The cast of characters was spectacular with Timmy the Kid, Dirty Sanchez, Buster bustin out into a Gold Glove, MVP career and who could forget the Undertaker, the Carolina country boy with those long-faced lugubrious looks under the hooded brows?

Castoffs, castaways and star performers made for an ensemble which Central Casting could not have replicated. Then the names now missing from the Flappertariat like Delmar Dan and Twin Fan. Little did I know at the time that when I called “Dynasty”, the Even Year heroes did it again and again.

The Halloween Machine in appropriate orange and black attire gave us some Texas toast that wondrous night on the road. Unlike ’62, ’89 and Ought-Two our coach did not turn into a Jack O Lantern and the team just kept on rolling along to become Champions of the World. Cue Queen somebody.

Some of TF’s comments have a way of fascinating me. On the blog that night he wrote “I’m so happy for the Giants’ players. Everyone of them.”
The “Everyone of them” comment is interesting. Like, what Giants fan WOULDN’T be happy for everyone of them? It gives insight, I think, into how TF saw the team. The individual stories of players was important to him, especially the guys who had been journeymen. The high draft-pick guys he wouldn’t lavish all that much praise on. But he would lavish praise on a journeyman who got a big hit here or there, or pitched a good inning here or there. And then he became an aggressive defender of that type of player.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 27, 2020 at 11:09 am

TF wouldn’t be thrilled about the Dodgers winning the World Series, but he would be happy for Dave Roberts, a former Giant. TF always defended Roberts when he was on the Giants.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 27, 2020 at 11:32 am

hmmnn that’s funny, don’t remember that bout Roberts Giants days. However, the smugness of Roberts and that smile seems the type of expression Twin would have on his face as he’s lecturing us for some post he disagrees with, given his self proclaimed superior knowledge of the game.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 27, 2020 at 11:39 am

I remember it because Roberts didn’t do all that much for the Giants, and people on the blog were ripping him, and TF was always defending him, and ripping the other bloggers about it. I just wondered why TF put that much effort into it, for a player that just seemed the essence of journeyman.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 27, 2020 at 11:43 am

Whenever Twin got a notion to defend a guy, there was no pulling him off that mountain. Irregardless of how wrong he was.

Roberts played well for Bochy in SD in 2006 (.752 OPS 49 SB); his subsequent exploits in the PS weren’t enough, though. His PS stats for the RSox in 2004 are hilarious. 3 games, 2 runs, 1 SB. No hits or walks. In fact, no PAs. Ah, but that one steal. Then two years later, he was Boch’s starting LF. No wonder he wound up here, I guess. Ten seasons total, including that very truncated one at the end with the Giants. His average WAR per season is way over Wilmer’s.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 27, 2020 at 11:46 am

Yeah, Roberts was at the fan fest in 2009 and he seemed like a nice enough guy. He did nothing as a Giant as he was yet another broken down vet that Sabes tried to squeeze some life out of. I don’t ascribe anything to him as anything but a Dodger player and a Dodger manager.

So, fuck him. Here’s to going 0-2.

  10. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 27, 2020 at 11:58 am

I think TF, at some point, talked about meeting journeyman players while he was a kid and his dad was a broadcaster. The guys fighting just to keep a job in the majors were probably friendlier towards the son of one of the broadcasters, I’m guessing. So TF always had a heart for those types of players after that, and defended them on the blog to the point of extreme, sometimes.

I know Stolen Bases are irrelevant to some but if Dave Roberts doesn’t steal the most important bag in playoffs history against the Yankees the Redsox’s never complete they’re epic 3-0 deficit and go on to they’re first W/S championship!
And for Roberts it most be nice knowing u never have to buy a drink are dinner in Boston the rest of your life!!

stolen bases are fucking awesome. All of them.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 27, 2020 at 12:42 pm

Didn’t Johnny Damon steal 2b and 3b on the same play because IF shift meant it was vacated and he only had to outrun whomever covered 2b on the play?

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 27, 2020 at 12:53 pm

I remember it being a bang/bang play at second base. The ump really could have gone either way with it. And this was all before replay-umping.

  12. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 27, 2020 at 12:55 pm

Chicken or egg thing? Do we dislike certain players regardless of them being a Dodger, or is it because they are a Dodger? Are Turner and Muncy villains because of being Dodgers, or would they have been kind of unlikable on other teams as well?

One of few things I will watch on ESPN is PTI, half hour with Wilbon and Kornheiser. I like the format, 30 minutes couple minute segments where they can rant and argue yada yada. Today first topic up was Bears offense, for Wilbon noted Chicago guy. It was funny to see him criticize Bears coach whose O could do zip vs. Rams D that Shanahan and his band of no name backups torched and schooled a week ago last Sunday.
there are times, like now, when I don’t think Shanahan gets enough credit.

Time for one of my less worn out annual rants.
The fairly recent naming of the WS MVP Award after Willie Mays.
    Hasn’t Willie gotten enough accolades?
The award should be called the Reggie Jackson Mr. October WS MVP trophy.
Mays’ WS accomplishments aren’t in the same solar system as Reggie’s.
But Reggie’s just not their kind of guy if you know what I mean…

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 27, 2020 at 7:16 pm

Reggie was a local character for a long time. He seemed to like the Bay Area. His house in the Oakland hills burned down twice, the second time in the huge firestorm of 91. A warehouse full of his exotic cars in Berkeley burned down too. I remember back in the mid 80s one of his neighbors called the cops because he and a friend were playing catch out in the street. Bouncing ball must’ve hit a high-priced bumper or something. The story I read in the paper about the imbroglio made it sound as if the cops were delighted to meet him.

  19. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 27, 2020 at 5:16 pm

Shanahan is a bit all over the place, Willie. There are times where he doesn’t seem to see what is happening in front of him. Early this season I was saying the Niners needed to get the ball out faster, and run quicker plays as all our QBs were getting mauled just about every pass play. It took him a few games to adjust to his line being a sieve. His time management in the SB was bad. He did the same thing in the Philly game.

There are times where he relies on 1st down runs to exclusion of everything else.

When he is on, he is unstoppable. His run blocking schemes are the best in the league. He really put the WR jet sweep on the map. Other teams had been doing it, but we more often than not get an inside lane on these plays which get 20-30 yards as opposed to the usual 10-15. But sometimes he is his own worst enemy. His first 5 4th-and-1s resulted in 5 runs up the middle, and 5 failures. He FINALLY changed it up in the Ram game and got a 50 yard TD out of the slant to Kittle. His game planning these last 2 games was spot-on.

I’m not saying he’s terrible, just that he falls prey to predictability at times. And he sometimes gets too conservative with a lead.

I looked at that old thread on the night SF won the WS in 2010. Thing that struck me was that earlier in that day everybody was pretty damn sure the Giants would take it that night. With Timmeh back in form, the odds looked really good. The short, flaming tete a tete of Oracle v. Loo was reminiscent of many such Oracle blow ups with everybody, it looked like it was started by Oracle, as usual. I remember dancing with my snarkettes in our living room after The Beard got Cruz for the last out. Good times…

Gotta say, the Betts contract has to be worth ending a 30+ year drought for those fucking fucks.

Giants broke their drought in the same place…

Still a Sham World Series só if that’s the best the Dodgers can do so be it I guess?

good call on spam….On the Padres twitter site, after LA knocked them out, plenty of their (Dodgers) fans showed up to roast Pads as small town wannabes that will never make it yada yada. Brutal

They just posted the dumbest, most obscure statistical graphic about Betts that I’ve ever seen…

Justin Turner tested positive for COVID DURING the game. That’s why they pulled him.

  70. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on October 27, 2020 at 9:08 pm

Strange that he even started then did he get tested before the game like the rest and comes up negative, then in the dugout he comes up positive?

  71. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 27, 2020 at 9:08 pm

Flavor, Kirkjian just said same thing as your 8 PM…”I’m worried about the game.” Said like Unc did, it’s not just Cash and Rays FO, it’s everyone in baseball. They aren’t watching the game. Who on Rays was better choice than Snell to beat LA, dealing as he was then?

There are no fireworks going off here.
The Brooklyn connection aged out years ago.
I can’t remember the last time I saw a Dodger cap on the street…

Crazy about Turner. Now instead of pure excitment now these guys have to worry about being with family after winning. Hate the Dodgers but as a sports fan that sucks.. Big fail by MLB to allow that to happen. How do they not get the results sooner??
