A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Who’s Your Current Favorite Giant?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 28, 2021

If you could only pick one, who would it be and why? My answer is easy and obvious: he brings his shovel to work. What started out as just a great nickname has blossomed into one of the best stories in years. He has the best OPS on the team. He’s their fastest player. And their best outfielder. The Grave Duggar is MY GUY.

But there are so many to choose from.

You have to pick 1.

Go!

More Flap representation. Here is Chi and his daughter at the game yesterday:

    Great pic!
Gausman close second, reminds me of Giants ace SPs of past. Seems like he is capable of no hitter every time out. DeSclafani tonight, Gausman tomorrow at Latrine. should be fun. this time Dogs are ones looking up in standings.

Duggar. His defense and smooth/stylish way of moving on the field is what started me on him. And I love the fact that he went to Clemson. I always have had a thing for Clemson, going back to Steve Fuller. And I love my under the radar dudes. I just thought if he could hit a little bit, he could help us. But this????? Starting regularly and being one of the guys that makes the team go? This is more than I ever could have dreamed for. They had to be right on the verge if DFAing him more than once.
    What an incredible run.

I sit here trying to answer, but in fact there is a new one every day one guy picks up the team. It’s what makes this team the cream of what is success. What is true chemistry .
I honestly can’t put one over the others . It’s a machine that breeds confidence in each working part. When one part breaks down, another picks him up.
Sorry I’m a sentimental dick here, but I have no favorites.

I’ve had quite the LA experience these past few days. I’m still here and COULD go to tonight’s game, but I have to get back to San Diego before mirning so that would be a LONG night.
Last night my son Matt took us to some hip Mexican place and John C Reilly was a couple tables over from us. Played golf yesterday with Matt and a couple of his friends at Griffith Park and they put a fifth guy in our group, and he was a character straight out of an LA movie. Snazzy oufit, hair, glasses. Remote control golf cart, great one liners and imitations. Pointed out Kirstie Alley’s house to us. He shot one over while putting down beers, smoking a cigar, AND I’m quite certain i saw him quickly snort a little coke on the 6th tee box. Kicking myself for not asking him what he did for a living.

Funny stuff. Is that Mapdog? I’m doing a charity golf outing today with my mom, next-oldest brother and a friend from high school who used to belong to the course we’re playing today, so he’s going to be a nice ringer for us.

No this is Map’s older brother—-the one who knows Chuck’s daughter and got Panik’s home run ball.
Map just graduated from Cal Poly SLO—-which was a pretty good feat seeing as he got academically dq’d from junior college a few years ago. It was a helluva comeback by him.

Great pic Chi—-you both look great!

    Great pic, Chi!

There’s a bunch of guys on this team who are easy to root for and have become favorites of mine: Yaz, Wilmer, Barrels, Gausman, and yes, the Grave Duggar. But I have to go with Craw. He’s been a damn good player at an important position for almost a decade now, and it’s great to see him become a big part of the offense again after some down years.

I saw that the Yanks placed Wandy Peralta on the IL due to a back issue. Looks like Wandy wasn’t exactly holding up his end of the deal: in his last five outings, he had a 9.64 ERA (5 ER, 4.2 IP), and opponents had a .964 OPS against him. So maybe Tauchman, with his two game-saving catches and two big bombs, doesn’t look quite so bad in comparison.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 28, 2021 at 8:18 am

exactly, that’s what I said all along. We gave up nada for Sock Man. And again, I firmly believe he saved the season with that Pujols catch. The chaos that would have erupted after that epic loss would have affected them for the next week at least. You literally can’t put a value on that catch….

Kevin Gausman is the man no doubt, with his laid back personality (Timmy like) to his lethal variety of pitches,a true ACE who brings it every game.Plus he wears the coolest baseball glove in baseball ⚾️.Should be the A/S starter isn’t he from Colorado?where the games at?Yeah DeGrom is great but he’s breaking down and the Mets would be wise to tell him to skip it for the rest.
Honorable mention has to go out to Anthony T-Bone Disco DeScaffani just a brilliant signing by Z/Harris who just brings that “Chuck Norris bad ass swagger to the mound every start” and like Gausman brings it every game with confidence and consistency..

Buster is still my favorite Giant on the roster. He’s having a bounce-back season, and if his body holds up, possibly has a few more productive seasons ahead of him, and is slowly restarting Hall of Fame talk in the national media.

The Dodgers come into this series feeling very confident. They got no-hit recently, but they have Bellinger and Muncy back, and they’re feeling like they got a lot of their mojo back.
The 2-game series probably shouldn’t be over-emphasized by Giants fans. After that we have four coming up vs. the struggling D-Backs.

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 28, 2021 at 10:10 am

Yeah, weird little 2-gamer vs the Dogs. They may be confident, but they have the struggling non-Spider-cum Bauer pitching. He of the reduced spin rate and suddenly hittable fastball.

Baggs with interesting column in Athletic, noting after L to Cole Irvin yesterday Giants lack of success vs. LHP, how much they miss Longoria, etc. Slater in a big time slump–June has been rough for him and Dubon continues to be Dubon. Davis due to come off rehab assignment in few days and needs spot on 40 man (could replace Belt if he has to go on 60); Giants won’t face LH SP vs. Dogs so some of weak hitters safe for now.

As for Tauchman, read yesterday that Giants were 8-4 in games before the catch, and then after went 6-3. In other words, “they’ve been good all year. “

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 28, 2021 at 2:04 pm

Stix called late last night. We talked until nearly midnight Calif time. A friend hooked him up with a small solar panel system so he has a light in his ice-fishing shack and a charge for the flip phone the parole people gave him. His only media is his car radio; most of his neighbors are Amish. The man’s on the edge of the grid.

He was glad to get the Giants news update. Belt and Longo out bummed him; everything else delighted him. First to fifty, Gausman the ace, Dugger the CF we’ve been looking for, etc. etc. His parole officer has given him to the end of August to make his home habitable — i.e., to turn it into an actual home address. He has a lot of work to do. One neighbor donated an old unneeded barn. The idea of working up on the roof above the second story hayloft with a claw framing hammer and crowbar trying to pry the lumber loose doesn’t sit well with him. He’s contemplating a chain harnass and tractor pull to bring it all crashing down. He’s optimistic, as always. Great 2 by 6’s, he says.

He gets on well with his PO, an indigenous guy who grew up on a res in ND, so he may be able to negotiate a compromise on the end-of-August deadline, etc. He’s planning to approach the local power coop to get hooked on. He figures industrial strength extension cords from the pole at the highway to his house 1/4 mile or something up the drive will work. He’s optimistic.

Being free and in the country, eating well (he waxed poetic about his slow bbq’d pork roast and boiled potatoes & various vegies) agrees with him. My prediction: he’ll be back on line to see the Giants make the PS.

I still like Sock Man even though I suspect he’s not long for the team. He made two game saving catches this year. No telling how many we lose after the Pujols game if we lost that game. That would have been a gut punch. Also, he looks a little like Will Clark to me (maybe it’s the eye black). I like anything that reminds me of the Thrill. And he get a tip of the cap from me for hitting that bomb with his back against the wall facing down the barrel of 6 possible strikouts…….
Still, he can’t hit and we have plenty of outfielders. I wish him well in AAA

On several successive summer afternoons a battered pickup stopped in a farmer’s watermelon field, the driver hopped out, tossed a few melons into the bed, and sped away. Finally, after watching this from his distant front porch, the farmer placed a sign by the road: “This patch contains one melon injected with fatal poison.” Next day, the truck stopped and left without a melon. But it returned and stopped for a while before leaving. The farmer went to investigate and found a new sign posted: “Now there are two.”

Too close to take, gotta protect with 2 strikes, can’t leave it up to the ump.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 28, 2021 at 7:27 pm

That pitch wasn’t too close to anything except one of the dugouts.

      • James's avatar James said, on June 28, 2021 at 7:30 pm

Should I post a graphic of outside called strike 3s to Belt? I guarantee you that what Posey took was pretty average.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 28, 2021 at 7:38 pm

A Belt graphic would definitely have a lot of called third strikes to look at.

      • James's avatar James said, on June 28, 2021 at 7:39 pm

        Far fewer than you think.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 28, 2021 at 7:39 pm

Bauer just hotly argued with angel that he deserved that close call again vs the pitcher. Wtf thinks it’s a good idea to challenge angel in the second inning with the fucking pitcher up? Bauer is entertaining.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Belt’s time here is over. He can take pitches in Houston. Tired of the injuries and the .220 hitter approach.

      • James's avatar James said, on June 28, 2021 at 7:57 pm

Ok, whatever, Chuck. He was excellent this year and last. The injuries are a bummer. His approach is the Giants’ approach in general. Don’t swing at pitches out of the zone. It works.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 28, 2021 at 8:27 pm

Excellent? Which of the 3 stints to the IL have been excellent? He will ALWAYS be an unfulfilled anomaly. He’s been dogged for never taking advice from the coaches and now he hits like he’s Johnny LeMaster.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 28, 2021 at 8:22 pm

i don’t know if I’d call that *their approach*. They seem to be very agressive early and then work the count afterwards if they don’t see that first pitch they like. Regardless of that, Belt has been clearly identified by MANY MANY people including the great Thrill as someone who has no interest in changing his hitting approach. I hate him and can’t wait till his dumbass is gone

Xoot, your 5:33 clip of Bonds brought it all back, those players on that team, seeing Bonds, Kent, Aurelia, Snow… I loved that team. And who knows, this year *could* over time bring back some nostalgia years from now, seeing a clip and there’s Wilmet, Duggar, Wade, Solano, Gasman, etc. and sentiments of “I loved that team”.

The Brandons were, without doubt, my favorite Giants for a handful of years there. As much as Belt’s at-bats seemed to drive most people nuts, I loved watching him hit. Hmm, should still use present tense, he ain’t gone yet…

Ángel is just an extreme version of most umps. Shouldn’t the hitters anticipate his inconsistency, and hack at everything within 2 inches of the strike zone with two strikes? Of course not, because he’ll still call the majority of them balls. Like most umps.
