A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

First Half Champion

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 11, 2021

Here we are, guaranteed to be in first place at the break. This is still blowing me away. Regardless of how the season shakes out we have been given a gift this year. Appreciate it.

Gausman vs the underwhelming Fedde. We have unfinished business with that guy.

Sun River today. Catch you guys later.

How did you play in your 36??? My game is finally coming back around close to 2 years of barely playing. Shot a 44 front 9 with my boys on the 5th. But still three putted both par 5s for a bogey and double boge.

We need to draft some upper tier arms and this college pitcher from Miami of Ohio Sam Bachmann may be considered one of the more ready big league arms available at 14 our draft spot…

GH..I like the kid from Kansas St Jordan Wick-considered the best left hand pitcher in the draft.Reynolds& forget the other guys name, had Bachmann and Wicks on the MLB show, and Wick only impressed more in the interview as Bachmann seemed like a country bumpkin and overweight,Wick is in a lot better shape .Bachmann’s chubby ness reminds of Sidney Ponson, no thanks!
I could see a nice tandem future of Kyle Harrison &Jordan Wick 2 LHP in their rotation.

      • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 11, 2021 at 12:44 pm

Harrison I think the way he throws may be a better fit ad a closer…Wick not likely to be drafted higher?

Going on almost a week of consecutive wins in Draftkings. This guy Lopez pitching for Miami has 7 SOs in 3 innings. Sheesh, not certain that is normal for today’s game or not. I still can not watch any baseball on TV. Too much feast or famine. I see money coming my way again. The question is how much.

I’ve been a Giants fan since 1955. That’s likely the longest tenure here. (Not bragging; most folks here are way more knowledgeable and avid a fan than I am.) I can’t recall, off-hand, a more shocking, positive surprise than the Giants’ starting pitching than this year’s. I mean, really? Herr Kevin Gausman? Anthony DeSicialianoneapolitano? And that’s with a mediocre and inconsistent Cueto. In fact, the team’s success overall at this point is a stunning surprise. I’ll take it. I’ll enjoy it, and not second-guess it. After THREE IN FIVE, everything is delicious, calorie-laden, steaming, Thanksgiving Dinner fuckin’ mouth-waterin’ gravy. Period. full stop.

Article on the Giants said they were “showcasing” Bart for a possible trade. Haven’t checked, but is Bailey doing well enough for us to think about trading Bart for a starter that we could hold on to?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 11, 2021 at 2:18 pm

No. Bailey struggled big time at High A Eugene, Mendoza line numbers. Played some 1b over there too iirc.

No one would “showcase” the current version of Bart. Emerg pre break call up. Of course, if he’d boomed the first ever oppo splash hit they would’ve scrambled to make a post facto showcase out of it.

Couple years back the white woman on that crew was the only roaming commentator at the park. I didn’t mind her. Sorta liked the way she kept climbing the sections when she was pregnant. Then one Sunday she came to the section where I often sat. One of her assistants pointed to our row–bunch of colorful fans, right? She vetoed us immediately and led her camera to a nearby row featuring younger people. The matronly fans around me looked up from their scorebooks and growled: “Ageist bitch.” The rest of us mocked her a bit more loudly. Good times.

  28. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 11, 2021 at 2:47 pm

Bart is raking at AAA. I don’t think his callup was a “showcase”. One game? And, that’s likely what it will be. I don’t think he showed much one way or another. To me, his D still looks suspect, though Krukow raved about how much better it is. That split stance approach seems suspect to me, he can’t move laterally very well doing that. That wild pitch that Beede threw was in the dirt, yes. But, it wasn’t even off the plate, and Bart tried to backhand it, not get down in front with glove up and try to smother it. That to me wasn’t a very tough block and he just whiffed on it. Still, I would not trade him, especially with Bailey less than stellar so far in high A ball…

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 11, 2021 at 3:02 pm

Even Casali had trouble today moving latitudinally after a Guasman splitter in the dirt. He met the bouncing ball at angle just as Bart did yesterday. Shoots away, of course. The new lowdown set must be particularly tough for a guy as tall as Bart. I was hoping to see him with a chance to showcase his arm yesterday. No such luck. He’s stuck in a strange place. Sabe/Evans drafted him in one era, he’s now catching in another. As I said last year, let’s hope this treacherous twilight of his career is dawn, not dusk.

  29. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 11, 2021 at 2:52 pm

The Euro soccer final now in the middle of penalty kicks to decide it.
The biggest match in Europe in years, and it will be decided on PKs.
Absolute rubbish way to end it.
After the first OT, if still tied, they should make each team pull one player, and do that each successive OT period. Make the OT periods shorter, so the guys don’t wear out.
PKs to decide this is like having a home run derby decide the WSeries, or a free throw contest decide the NBA finals…

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on July 11, 2021 at 3:01 pm

Yeah, for a championship game like that and the World Cup, they need to come up with something better than PKs. Although I’m not that big a soccer fan to get too riled up about it.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 11, 2021 at 4:16 pm

those were the only 2 at bats I saw. It would be nice if Z put together a dominant bullpen. He pitched 20 innings last year, he’s nearly doubled that at this point. It is highly unlikely that he’ll remain effective through the year and through the post season. Z’s main priority should be on improving the bullpen. This is no throw-away year, obviously. Hit the post season with guns a blazin’

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 11, 2021 at 4:32 pm

nobody threw any innings last year, especially closers. Every contender will be looking for pen help; putting together a dominant pen or closer from outside org this time of year is a longshot.
Z has said they might be more interested in SP, which makes hella lot more sense—instead of 1 inning guys, get someone who can go 5 or 6, especially in playoff series.

Boy Manfred besides being booed like hell, try’s a comeback announcing the 11 players only who showed up seemed alittle desperate for ratings increase..

i usually don’t get excited with baseball drafts but for some reason I am about this one. I think it’s because I really liked what we did last year in the draft.

  63. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 11, 2021 at 4:27 pm

    A closer maybe.
A solid veteran CF, definitely – and even better if he can play a little 1B…

  64. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 11, 2021 at 4:28 pm

    Maybe Leone ends up closer.
Don’t forget, Reyes Moronta is back rehabbing. Maybe he can make a comeback.
Like BF, Rogers and Mr. McGoo scare the crap out of me every time they come in…

  65. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 11, 2021 at 4:32 pm

I would still like the Giants to make a push for Kimbrel as the closer and moving back both Rodgers&McGee to 8 th inning situations. If that doesn’t work the Cubs LH Reliever Andy Chafin would be a tremendous addition to this bullpen as well, and cost less to acquire then Kimbrel would take.

Could be. A pick like that can change the destiny of a franchise.

Kmbrel pitched 15 innings last year.
And of btw, in 2019, 20 innings.
Do NOT go that route–high priced closers, ugh.
Don’t care about being scared–Wilson scared crap out of me too, all the way to end of 2010. Results all that matters.

Would you be comfortable or confident with him trying to close a WC game in bottom 9th in the oppo’s park, Giants up by one run going in?
        Not me…

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:00 pm

I would like the Giants to upgrade at closer, but only if they can do it without trading away too much. I know the “too much” mark is a fine line.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:08 pm

No way ZMan is trading any top prospects, nearly the entire 25 man roster right now theoretically may not be back next season. I think LaStella and Longo are the only guys under contract next season, or am I forgetting someone(s)?…

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:13 pm

All the non-free agent eligible guys like Yaz.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:27 pm

Right. They can be easily cut loose.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:30 pm

Maybe Wade or Estrada has developed trade value already.
Yaz for sure will be back. He’s one of the core guys now. His contract situation is intriguing, though, because he’s kind of an older guy.

  68. xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 11, 2021 at 4:54 pm

McGee had good velo today. So did Gausman. Rogers terrifies the strongest hitters and the queasiest Giants fans. The Ice Man Cometh for the eighth. Zaidi said outright the other day that they’re looking for pitching at the deadline. SP, and RP if possible. That approach assumes that the hitters coming off the IL will rake. But who the fuck are we to question the plan? Oh, yeah. We’re bloggers.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:04 pm

I am confident ZMan will make some good moves.
No doubt he’s looking for pitching, because he should be, like all GMs of contenders for the post season.
I don’t think for a second that he’s content with the Pen, including if not especially Rogers and McGoo…

The Giants drafted Heliot Ramos out of Puerto Rico in 2017. Luciano was a classic find in DR. No draft.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:33 pm

No help from the D-Backs today. At least they did win one game in that series.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:12 pm

They lost 22-1 yesterday, with 8 LA homers.
      Dbacks are historically bad.
At least Bum gets his $15 million or so per year.
Thanks Dbacks — you are giving him the backpay for past performance that the Giants smartly underpaid him…

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:17 pm

Maybe the Giants came out even on the Zito and Bum deals.
On the performance/cost ratio, one was horrendous for the Giants, the other was horrendous for the player…

Here again is the list of closers and their stats for this year:

    https://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/closers

McGee or Rogers may yet give up that homerun that sends every Flapper into a total off season depression, despite what’s already been one of the most awesome SF seasons ever. But the idea that there’s someone in the top tier of the above list who’s far more likely than anyone else not to fail in a “critical moment” is pretty suspect.

    Craig Kimbrel’s post-season stats:
