A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Time To Pile Up Wins

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 21, 2022

RIght outta the gate we get LA. We line up our stud Rodon. It’s odd they are starting White. I mean, they could have juggled their rotation for this series. It’s almost disrespectful to the rivalry to start this dude in Game 1.

Del Mar starts tomorrow, gents. Oh my. Wish i could be there. No better place in the entire world than opening day Del Mar in July…..

Giants give Dogs pretty hard time and whipped them earlier in SF. Dogs have amazing numbers stat wise:
on offense, #1 NL for runs, 4th HRs, #2 BA, #1OB, #2 slugging, #1OPS and park adjusted OPS+.
pitching: #1 for ERA runs allowed hits and BBs given up.
Good thing game is played on field.

One last thing about “what worked in 2021”: it doesn’t seem like any team can repeat in major sports these days, for variety of reasons (though Braves certainly have a shot). One is that other teams come after you differently and now target is on your back. Another is that they look to improve with goal of taking you down. Health is certainly a major factor, but LA has had its share of injuries too–Taylor and Buehler out right now. and Betts missed time on IL too while they scrambled to fill OF and did their share of platooning. They are 60-30 and probably still trying to add at deadline.

Think the Dogs will be gunning for Soto? I’m sure they’ll go for it.

I’m real interested to see how the Warriors season goes. Klay Steph and Dray are getting up there, and it appears they have their reserves at the ready, but the whole Wiseman thing is huge. He and Kuminga could be anything from spectacular to very little.

one thing we know about the Tigers: they always, 100% of the time, lose trades. So we should be actively trying to pick up one of their stud relievers and be prepared to not miss the guy we trade at all

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 21, 2022 at 8:33 am

that was Brisbee’s #1 move in Athletic mail bag column, acquiring one of Tigers pen guys.
Btw Melissa Lockerd (great rundown of everyone SF drafted in Athletic) said in reply to comment that drafted pitchers tend to move up faster than hitters do. Out of Z draftees, it seems Kyle Harrison on quickest path to majors, faster than Luciano crowd from previous regime currently in High A Eugene..

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 21, 2022 at 9:20 am

well it’s nice to see Brisbee coming around to my way of thinking. 🙂 Al Avilia is an idiot. We should fleece him the same way others do.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we stayed pat and just waited on our minor league system to come through next year. We don’t really have a lot of trade bait and spending a lot of money is probably out of the question.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 21, 2022 at 11:41 am

We’ll do something. It’ll be a couple mid-level relievers, and maybe an OFer.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 21, 2022 at 12:00 pm

Starting with the Dogs is a good way to gauge how this 2nd half goes. Got the starters lined up and the hope is Junis gets back into the rotation. No more pen games.

I think they will go with infield depth but with a player that can play outfield as well in Brandon Drury from the Reds, and while their on the phones might as well see what they want for SP Castillo. If not him, then yeah a couple veteran BP guys would help as well..

Yeah as much as I would crave for a generational player like Soto,Joc said it right Giants just don’t have the players to offer Nats. Can’t see Z/H gutting the farm prospects he has built up, besides ownership won’t allow an big splash till they get the big contracts off the books.

  7. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 21, 2022 at 12:35 pm

I question the value of possibly squeaking into a WC with this bunch and hoping to knock off the free spenders who will pay anything to get what they need. Maybe those are the teams Z should try to fleece for some young talent. Rodon, Yaz, Mr. Ed, and a couple others all have some value.
Next season Crawford will be our last remaining geezer…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 21, 2022 at 1:06 pm

2.5 good pitching performances go a long way in the playoffs. It’s the battle cry of the expanded playoff system.

True enough, Chuck – but this year the defense, the bullpen and the core have regressed so much…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 21, 2022 at 2:53 pm

I think Loo is right and teams out there would take Joc Yaz, Rodon (who is gonna walk) definitely. WC matchup is now 2 out 3. OK so Giants squeak in burn up Rodon and Webb, then what? Can you beat Braves or Mets or LA with Wood and back end rotation and pen???? Giants don’t have prospects except couple untouchables to improve team much. Others do and will get better at deadline.

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 21, 2022 at 3:11 pm

Mumblings out there about porn star Jizz Chisolm being available for trade by the Marlins. Sure we have Estrada, but Stella-Loser will soon be gone and he would be big upgrade. I wonder what they’d want (a boatload of minor leaguers), but he’s got pop. Lefty though.

Under control till 2027 so i doubt it happens, but WTF? Ye olde tire kicking session.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 21, 2022 at 2:22 pm

supposedly he’s got an attitude problem. But he’d be a huge upgrade for our offense assuming he’s not too much of an ass hat.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 21, 2022 at 3:03 pm

They are stuck with LaStella for another year after this one at $11.5 mil iirc. He ain’t going anywhere unless Giants pay another team to take him. Highly doubt this ends like Rowand did with him getting released.
      Cost Nukes his job too.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 21, 2022 at 4:51 pm

  9. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 21, 2022 at 2:58 pm

Other reason I agree with Loo on getting what you can now–I don’t think Z does anything big for next year either and rides out Crawford/buys out Longoria or takes $5mil team option and keeps him. And has to rebuild SPs again without Rodon. In other words, ceiling is bottom end of WC, til his prospects hopefully hit 2024-5.

Why are the SF top picks on offense so bad? Our top picks spend 5 years in minors. Other studs move up quick. Imagine if the Nats were careful with soto the way we are he would still be in the minors!

  13. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 21, 2022 at 3:19 pm

People refer to the “3rd place Giants.” The Padres are ahead by one game in the loss column, and we know how the Padres sank like a stone in the second half last season. I think there’s a strong chance that the Giants finish ahead of the Padres again.

  14. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 21, 2022 at 3:29 pm

The sports media world is in full Jeter-gasm mode. I just will never get it. Sure, he had a terrific career, and won 5 championships. But he played his entire career on very talented teams. He never had to really pull a team to the finish line, like some other players had to do over the years. If he wasn’t a Yankee, he would not be this adored by the media. He gives very measured and bland interviews. Frankly, he’s just not an interesting player. The sports media world will never understand how little the rest of us care about Jeter.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 21, 2022 at 3:31 pm

And the jump-throw from the hole at shortstop was done by others before him. Concepcion did it for the Reds.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 21, 2022 at 4:43 pm

Jeter was a colossal bore, Zum. Kids revered him and while the older fans respected him they never loved him like Mattingly, Munson, Mantle, and so many other colorful and clutch players. I doubt his bland interviews endeared him to the local media, but in his defense he was a good leader (I hear) and you don’t get 3,500 hits by accident…
