A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Yuck. I left that game in the 8th inning and then the texts started rolling in. “What the fuck was that?” “Worst loss of the year!” “Unreal”. I went to the boxscore and couldn’t believe it.

Now Pitt tosses Jones today, Skenes tomorrow. Exciting but this could get ugly, fast.

How the hell is Ranger Suarez 9-0 and dominating the league?

O’Neil Cruz ballgame is good lesson for anyone, including Luciano. Costly error that gave Giants early2 run lead, then more than made up for it later w 3 hits and game tying rbi off Doval.

Oh the walks arrggh. Ump was terrible all night. Walker had to throw 2 extra pitches for Ks.

As locojuan said, “gotta forget this one quick.”

  2. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on May 22, 2024 at 8:12 am

Obviously there’s a reason for it, but I don’t know what it is: why does Melvin keep leading off with Soler, a guy with OB under .300 and BA nearly under .200…. He does take walks. But I don’t get that one.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 22, 2024 at 8:43 am

Soler does have career OB of .328 and for Marlins last year it was .341. Those numbers are higher than most current Giants hitters.

2021 WS champ Braves had him bat lead off in NLDS and in WS couple games each so he has done it before. First 2 games Melvin tried it over weekend he had 5 hits. Since then hasn’t gone as well, fair enough.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 22, 2024 at 8:26 am

It was brilliant for a couple games, but now Soler is back to scuffling. Got to ride the vets into the ground and then some more. If Slater wasn’t hurt, he’d still be playing.

  4. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 22, 2024 at 8:56 am

Giants beat Jared Jones 4/28 at the O, 3-2. Estrada and Yaz hit back to back HRs off him and Winn gave up only 1 run in 6. Miller and Walker had shutout innings, then Pirates roughed up Doval for run double (Tellez) single walk and passed ball by Bailey in 9th before Bart grounded out to end it.

Jones did pick off Fitz at 1b too.

WAR is a strange stat. The breakdown of its components reminds me of the innards of a Swiss watch. Maybe it’s only accurate twice per day. I don’t know. But look at the list of all time WAR leaders. There’s a fairly clear low mark range for HOFers. On an individual level, its coincidental value sometimes seems useful, too. Look at Soler. 10+ years, 5.7 WAR, but 3.5 of that in 2019, and 1.8 last year. Couple of negative years, including 2024, so far. This may be another bad peso year.

    • James's avatar James said, on May 22, 2024 at 11:10 am

His career WAR as a hitter is 11.1 per BR. The 5.7 factors in his crappy defense, which is not an issue this year. WAR is also cumulative, and the two years you cite are the only times he’s played what you’d consider full seasons.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 22, 2024 at 11:38 am

true. But his career fielding WAR is -10.5. So the total WAR number does not simply, directly correlate to the off/def numbers. And he’s been injured once already this year without playing D. Lets hope he doesn’t foul another ball off his head in the cage.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 22, 2024 at 11:45 am

And his WAR right now is negative for this year with no glove work.

      • James's avatar James said, on May 22, 2024 at 1:15 pm

That’s because of the positional adjustment. If you don’t play defense oWAR = WAR. Hoping he starts to turn it around at the plate like Chapman.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 22, 2024 at 1:31 pm

His oWAR is negative this year and he has missed 20% of the games. Much like his bad peso years. But I’m bored with this too.

You all no we’re stuck with Farhan’s latest creation from his diabolical lab Ryan McKenna, who has no options to go to minors. So he will just have to outright Suck to dump him now. He’s going to be last year’s version of rule 5 player Blake Sabol who the Giants had to keep up all last year are send him back to Pirates?

  13. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 22, 2024 at 3:06 pm

Who the F is Ryan McKenna?

Some long-time journeyman dude DFA’s by the Orioles, it appears. Do we not have an equivalent player in Sac? I know he’s got some defensive issues, but since he was sent down, Fitzgerald has been on a hitting spree. He’s not as good as this McKenna turnstile player? I don’t see how this is good for triple A players’ psyche about how they may be rewarded with a call up.

    Why?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 22, 2024 at 3:45 pm

Can we pls just wave goodbye to past Giants that didn’t contribute? Fitz is where he belongs; there have always been caveats at whatever he has been at in minors, either over high K rate or fielding issues. His baserunning eff ups alone remind me of Luis Gonzlez.

. What I read about McKenna said he can play all 3 OF spots. Backing up CF if necessary would likely fall to him over Wisely or possibly Ramos. Yaz is in RF and Melvin said he would rather leave him there and let Matos have CF. Regardless , he’s last guy at end of bench. why bother?

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 22, 2024 at 4:11 pm

yeah, le’s get more retreads like McKenna so we will miss not seeing Slater out there.

This team is fucking ludicrous in their signing guys who are absolutely crap. Garko part 2.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 22, 2024 at 4:02 pm

Actually you answered your own question. No, the Giants don’t have anyone else better to play OF. Here are guys that started last weekend for RCs in OF:

ismael munguia, hitting .240 w OPS under .700.

hunter bishop, finally healthy enough, in his first 6 games hitting well.

brady whalen whom giants just re-signed to minor league contract.

T Hill, promoted from High A ball and hitting .188.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 22, 2024 at 5:43 pm

If that’s it, then this organization is a joke.

6th year of Farhan, and that’s what’s available at AAA, so he has to dumpster dive the sloppy seconds on the waiver wire — still ?

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 22, 2024 at 4:14 pm

Again, I’d rather see what Bishop brings than some fucking gravedigger like McKenna. Shit-can Slater already.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 22, 2024 at 4:52 pm

He’s had 7 games in Sac and 26 in Richmond at AA ball where he hit .240. Giants have 2 starting OFs out hurt, and 2 guys from Sac replacing them. You do realize Dodgers just demoted James Outman their prize rook from last year back to minors. the guys that matter 99% are the ones Melvin is starting, not end of the bench players, who are there for a reason on every team.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 22, 2024 at 5:16 pm

Who the fuck cares???? We KNOW McKenna is a stiff who will do little to nothing.

Might as well give Hunter a look and see what happens. It’s not like I’m advocating him getting a starting spot all season. Just a look. McKenna is NOTHING! Why waaste the time with him?

I just fear we roll over like dead puppies. The hitting has to be addressed better than fucking McKenna. Give Soler a break. Put fucking Fitzstrangeglove at DH. For a few games. Seems like the guys that are hitting get moved down.

Hmm . . . Should I believe James or an umpire that’s likely been in this profession for a decade or more???

Seriously, I could give 2 shits (as I am viewing this game on Gamecast). My point is more directed at the utter uselessness of Yaz for 2 seasons. He’s only hanging on due to the fact we have zero alternatives.

      • James's avatar James said, on May 22, 2024 at 6:41 pm

If you want to bitch about Yaz, go for it. He got screwed on a 2-1 pitch that was clearly inside. The 85 mph change up on the corner for strike 3 was a great pitch, FWIW.
