Another AMAZING Win
Everyone is talking about these last 2 comeback wins and for good reason. We have become conditioned to not believing they can do that. But enjoy the good times while they are here and now we get the Mets who, frankly, seem even worse than their actual record. Tell me we’ve got some east coast Flap representation at these games?
attending one of these Pitt games would have been wild and no go on making it to Queens and no I was not in the South Bronx yesterday:)
Thanks for vids end of thread everyone. What is Hip? one of my fav tunes ever, from lyrics to band jamming w rhythm section horns and vocals.
Noticed in NBA and now even WNBA what players are wearing as they enter is focus of attention. “Is it in style of your hair? Or is it in clothes that you wear? I’d like to know.” Good looking men and women who can afford to wear what they want, see and be seen and style out.
Also requesting further info on this tv jazz channel discovered by Mr. Locojuan, pls.
Willie, we have a Samsung tv that has it’s own Samsung app. They have shows like Leverage, Rockford Files etc, the program I was talking about is called Vintage Jazz on a channel called dJazz. Tonight they are replaying the saxophone special that I saw with Trane, Sonny and Roland Kirk. Hope that helps.
I’ll check that out. Thanks. I’ve had WWOZ on the Sonos for a long time.
Stingray djazz is the program’s full name. The app is Samsung TV Plus. I think Stingray can be streamed.
Very much so, cheers. Searching around I think I did see something about “djazz”. Samsung tv w Samsung app, wow.
anyone catching the growth of Joe Ritzo on the radio calls? He’s really gotten good
I heard some clips posted on Twitter yesterday and thought he sounded great. Small sample, but he reminded me of Hank Greenwald.
he’s really improving. He brings ten times the energy Kruk or Kuip bring these days. And while I love Miller I am starting to like what Ritzo is bringing to the table even more. Flemming is a no-go for me, never have liked him despite his superior education to everyone else.
Ha! I think Flemming’s best asset is his ability to work well with just about anyone. Javvy sounded ok with him, eg. He does get snobby–anecdotes about the ancestor who signed the decl of indep or yesterday bragging about his kid at a fancy private HS.
Superior education lol. B-ball friend of mine got in w bunch of grad women we used to play pick up ball with (women were in rec league and would rent a gym to practice scrimmage vs. men) along with their BFs. As you well know Flav, some of this crowd can be decidedly weird. Big thing at that time was for fans of Stanford women’s program to be able to pronounce correctly name of big post player Naomi Mulitauaopele.
yeah I did too. His partner FP made nice comment about Yaz too, that at crack of bat he looked up and Yaz was already moving into position w great first step to make play on ball in RF. Haven’t heard them too much but I do know other fans like them too.
Been on the road a lot and have heard him call several games. I was initially put off a little by the conventionality of his voice, but quickly realized he’s still better than what I’ve heard from other teams’ announcers on Sirius. The string of wise guys with really distinct personalities from Simmons to Michaels to Greenwald to Miller is going to be broken permanently I suspect, but the next gen is ok.
Giants Magical Mystery Tour continues in Big Apple. Almost impossible to equal or surpass three game odyssey in Pittsburgh. Citi Field mere 70 miles from home but2+ hour drive time on holiday weekend. Long/standing Memorial Day plans preempting trip to Citi Field but I hope to catch Giants in DC early Aug.
Three hopeful developments during 6-1 stretch starting with win over LaLaLand week ago. Free agent signings finally awakening from winter hibernation (Chapman & Soler). Sacramento youth energizing Giant lineup (Matos & Ramos and to lesser extent Luciano). Excluding last two Pirate games emergence of starting pitching depth, especially Big 3 (Webb, Hicks, Harrison).
Mets persona non grata in NYC area these days so good time for Giants to take 2 of 3 and return to Oracle level at .500.
Any idea from East Coast how yard plays in warmer weather?
Smaller than they already are.
Yeah, was hoping for 4 of 6 on this quick roadie. It hasn’t been easy but so far so good. We could have won all those games. We could have lost all those games.
It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.
Willedav…no special intel on whether Citi Field dimensions play shorter in warmer weather. Believe overall reputation of park is not too hitter friendly. Hope for shut down efforts from Giants Big 3 pitchers this wknd.
thanks, just wondering. Noticed that NYC will be warmer (80s) than out here in most of California. O plays lot differently in day games w less wind, generally more hitter friendly. as you’ve said Mets not doing too well lately, and hope Giants SPs can shut them down.
Jazz by Uncle Meat, uh Frank . . .
Yeah, Willie, What is Hip? is one of my all time favorite songs ever. I’m the youngest of 5 so I heard all kinds of different music when I was a kid and ToP was played a lot. Which is why Chicago was another band I dug early on. Great horns. Sly and the Family Stone as well. I come from a family that loves music, but has no musical talent whatsoever. None of us. My mom was quite the dancer, though. I was a good roadie though for a few of my friends’ bands.
I’m going Sunday. Might’ve gone tomorrow if it was later start time, but no go. Mets have been going downhill for the last couple weeks, 3-10 stretch. Sometimes it’s lack of offense, a couple of times big-time blown saves by Diaz similar to Giants 8th-inning meltdown in Pitt. They just got swept in Cleveland, an impressive looking team.
9th inning.
As a teenager, I liked and listened to Chicago and the lesser known Sons of Champlin and of course Tower of Power, but I thought then and still do that the Electric Flag blew them all away. But hell they were all good in the early days. Not geniuses like Rollins or Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders, et alia, but really good.
“the creator has but one demand / peace and happiness through all the land”
Lotta work to do.
Yeah, great tracks, loved Leon thomas vocals. Sanders played w Alice Coltrane on couple interesting lps from 1970. She also played on Blue Note lp from McCoy Tyner in that same time period I really liked, Extensions w Gary Bartz Wayne Shorter Ron Carter and Elvin Jones. Beautiful cover too
Speaking of Pharoah, there was local musician who used to come into store where I worked before Pandemic and I lent him Sanders’ double CD “Crescent with Love” of mostly Coltrane tunes in quartet format recorded 1994. As he said, Sanders just takes you places.
When he returned it he gave me copy of CD he had recorded with Chris Cain and Clifford Coulter called Blue Monday Live at Norma’s 2002
Thomas cut his own versions of Master Plan but imo nothing compares to their collaboration on Sanders’ lp Karma. So much going on that the throat singing yodel joins easily.
Big fan of the Electric Flag also. I think a couple of the horns were local iirc.
Free your mind and your ass will follow.
Sons of Champlin and Electric Flag were a little before my time, but they were big here. So was Hendrix, the Doors, Janis, but that’s what everyone else in the house was listening to.
That led to Montrose, Moby Grape, Sabbath, Deep Purple, and ZZ Top.
On KNBR today, Extra Baggs discussed the possibility that Slater will come back soon and the likely result is Ramos to go back to Sac. If that happens, I don’t know why we should continue to follow the Giants. Slater is just a guy, an oft-injured guy. We know what he brings. He is not the future. Ramos may or may not be, but it’s time we find out. So far, he’s looking like the light bulb has turned on, and he’s gaining confidence. Send him down AGAIN, now after doing well for a couple of weeks — if I were him, I’d ask to be traded to another organization…
KNBR reports Drew Pomerantz back with the Giants, age 35. Plucked off the scrap heap. Likely stabled at AAA on a long shot potential Pen role…
he’s here with a mlb deal.
Great get. In 2019, Pomeranian was 2-9 with a 5.43 ERA for the Giants.
In the immortal words of John Cleese, I’m sure he’s getting better . . .
World Baseball Classic returns in 2026.
Four cities will host the initial rounds: Tokyo, San Juan (PR), Miami, Houston.
Semifinals in Houston. Finals in Miami. I understand they probably want US sites with roofs to eliminate rainouts for scheduling, but seriously. Houston, the cheating Houston and it dick owner, gets rewarded? Ugh…
Don;t know if I said that here, but that’s exactly what’s gonna happen. Ramos has 4 options left this year. I’m sure Luciano does as well.
Oh fuck me sideways. We got Drew Pomeranz back!
What the actual fuck is wrong with Farhan? We are gonna bring back Conforto and Slater, send down Matos and Ramos, and add Pomeranz????
Does ANYONE in the front office actually WATCH the games?
These moves are seemingly made in the darkness of space. Matos and Ramos have given the club a pulse. But, hey they have options. Let ’em cool their heels in Sacto while Slater gets hurt again, and Conforto takes 3 weeks to find his stroke.
If this happens, fuck Farhan with a barbed wire bat.
Yeah unca, “Walking Dead/Neagan” his ass.
If he brings back Slater, particularly if they send 1 of the 3 kids back to Sacramento, Zaidi will need help from above (such as a sniper from a roof top . . . I kid, I kid). lol
Loved the show till Neegan got nice.
Here’s Baggs take on Slater from mailbag column in TA answering the proverbial isn’t it past time to DFA Slater once he is healthy ?: “I’d be surprised if Slater were let go. It’s not like he’s had a lot of at bats (39 this year per B/R) versus a track record against lefties that has been impressive over the years (.817 OPS). I do think Slater will be given more runway to get in a groove. Ramos has been forcing the issue with his strong play in Sacramento. He’s probably in a position where he has to keep forcing the issue.”
So, “we’re hoping Ramos cools off so it justifies playing the hot (.128) hand”.
Again, are these guys watching the games?
Rare humorless mixed cliche metaphor from Baggs.
Giants traded Pomeranz (and Ray Black) to Mil at the deadline in 19 for Dubon (who is doing ok as a utility guy in Houston last I Iooked). Pompom, or whatever demeaning name you wish to attach to him, then threw 26 innings for Mil w/ a .901 WHIP. He was in SD 20 and 21, before Melvin’s time there, so we probably can’t blame Bob.
Since 21, he’s been in the minors doing almost nothing. Was he hurt? Whisenhunt isn’t a better LH arm for the roster spot and the pen? Crazy.
I think he had TJ surgery.
Can they send him to Sac for more rehab?
it was flexor tendon (hand) surgery back in 21.
Couple things to remember about Ramos…he still strikes out at high rate (29% league average is 22.5%) thing they’ve always worried about at minor league levels. He is currently hitting .296 w .345 OB, but BABIP is .400 so once that comes down to more like league average (.293) those offensive numbers bound to go down some unless he keeps hitting. He’s a corner OF w options with slightly above league average ISO power numbers, not safe place right now. As Baggs said elsewhere it’s more about how they feel about him going forward for next year when he is out of options.
As Baggs said later, Matos is lot safer and is the man in CF. Slater is only there as backup and to hit LHP, which rules him out of 70% of SPs. Conforto has OPS of .821, plus 7 HRs, trailing only Estrada and Chapman in 50 less ABS because he’s been out for 2 weeks. He isn’t going anywhere since Giants don’t have lot of LHs. This is why Wisely is still here over Fitz.
Good post Willie (and explanation). I think most folks are just exhausted from seeing Slater on the team. A few years ago, it was exciting to think him, Duggar, and perhaps, a couple others would become starters . . . Never happened though. Just speaking for myself, Slater reminds me of Zaidi (his machinations, deals, etc.). Just want to turn the page on Zaidi, Slater, etc.
I recognize that’s not going to happen though, as ownership extended his contract last year.
Are these money moves, like keeping a tired and completely injury prone dude like Slater over Ramos? I mean, Slater makes $4M this year, under an expiring contract. DFA’ing him means the Giants are out, what, around $2.5 million pro rata by the time he comes back? Teams like the Yanks and Sox and Cubs shit journeyman players like that off the roster. I just don’t see it, if it’s crater Slater in and energy Ramos out. Real fans will be pissed..
If Slater is DFAed, he’ll certainly be picked up by another team. As much as most everyone shits on him, he’s had a solid consistent career. Bring up his numbers, and the critical responses either ignore the facts or deliver sophistry.
Slater can always be DFAed in short order if he goes 0 for his next 20 and Ramos brought back up. If you shit can him now and Ramos goes into a funk, well, guess McKenna might still be available. Conforto is going to take away ABs from Ramos in any case.
As for the I got the minor league blues “psychic damage” argument, the opposite “he was brought up to soon” gets trotted out when that’s convenient. These guys are on stage, being watched by millions. I don’t think they’re that frail.
Hard to be stoic after looking at the nosedive that started in the second half last season and worsened the early part of this one.
I finally looked at his monthly splits. He actually had an ok September. He didn’t have that many PAs in any one month. The distribution of his good ok and bad stretches doesn’t seem particularly striking, especially given that he’s a part time player.
July and August amounted to a terrible nosedive. His Sept was so-so (0HR 1RBI). As DJLoo pointed out recently, in early June his total BA was way over .400. July was .159, Aug. .200.
Certainly??? Yaz would be picked up. Slater? Mmmmmmaybe. Prolly not.
He’s 31, ffs. He’s Joc Pederson without the charisma or the power.
I just don’t see how this guy engenders anything but mild scorn for taking up a roster spot for so long. He’s never played a full season. Guys regularly beat his 8 years of putting up numbers in 1 year.
What’s fallacious about dogging a guy who gets hurt all the time and whose high-water mark was .242, 12 HRs and 32 RBI in 2021?
I can’t wait till he gets the ‘good Giant’ treatment and a plaque somewhere.
that approach ignores his splits, for one thing.
2021 was his worst season of the last 4, not the high water mark.
All this angst over a 31 year old platoon guy baffles me.
I agree! Why the angst?
Slater sophistry.
Nice alliteration to it, but more than a bit overblown…
Slater’s strikeout rate is very similar to Ramos.
Slater 39AB’s 12K’s Ramos 54AB’s 17K’s there both at 3.25 .
So you keep around an old Crater Slater at .128 with no upside left over Ramos..296 knocking the crap out of the ball because of freaking options? And freaking Melvin saying,Looks like Slater has past a hurdle on his concussion recovery and now with maybe a rehab assignment at Sac could be ready by the end of the month..I’m so sick of useless players this organization still feel have value!
Slater will either continue to be ineffective over his next several games or his stats start to head back to respectability. He has been a good player the last 4 seasons, but I’ll be surprised if they give him more than 30-40 PAs to get his act together.
Those Slater intangibles are manifold. He should get ZERO more ABs.
Jesus. Every time he teases us with his hitting he gets hurt.
“Continues to be ineffective’ should be included on his plaque.
Here’s “sophistry” for you . . . https://www.mlb.com/news/giants-of-austin-slater-makes-first-start-c233994680
He’s had a 7 year try out with the Giants for a 1st string job. Pfffttt!
Me? He can go have his “solid, consistent career” elsewhere . . . Maybe with Christian Arroyo (#1 draft selection 2013 by Giants) in Boston . . . Whoops! Arroyo is out of baseball as of last season. A shame too, as Arroyo – per the article above, was promoted by the Giants on the same day Slater was.*
*Giants were smart though regarding Arroyo. They gave up the proverbial ghost and traded his ass after his 2017 season. No such luck with Slater.
The recent, no, fairly long history of Giants outfield quality, poor to fair as it has been, apparently generates in some an idolatry of mediocrity. Even oft-injured mediocrity. In a talented organization, an oft-injured, jouneymen guy like Slater is a pimple on the butt of the organization, and would surely have been cut by now in favor of more promising younger players getting a shot…
He’s been an above average ML hitter and role player. Nothing to idolize, but the scorn is unwarranted.
I would much rather have Casali backing up with what we’ve seen of Murphy. Murphy has a tin glove, not near the defensive C that Casali is. I don’t see him better than Casali in working with the pitchers, either. Murphy has a 2 year deal, so I guess he’s locked in, regardless…
Shit. Didn’t see yours, Blade. Posted mine ^^^
Harry’s looking wild.
Looking at the Mets LU and stats, I am flabbergasted that these guys have a record of 21-28 (.429). What am I missing Loo and/or Mac?
Mets teeing off Harrison early. Too many “way high” pitches .
this is Melvin’s A lineup and who he is going to roll with. Conforto likely back for homestand and new guy McKenna shipped out. I wouldn’t get too het up over someone who isn’t even here yet.
I hope not Willie. Yaz is batting 0 for his last 10 at bats; and 2 for 18 last 5 games.
zzz . . .
. . . but maybe today is the day!
Dropped in order too, not good sign. Could easily lose the ABs Conforto takes.
There you go. Big-boy HR.
At least 400 feet.
1st inning is when all pitchers are vulnerable seeing if they’re stuff from BP warmups transfers to the mound are not..
Freaking Luciano with another stupid error ,easily had Alonso doubled up at 1st after catching a line drive and his throw hits him in the back? Wtf?
Is Fleming that stupid, he’s seemed baffled that Luciano was charged with an error. He ended up at 2nd base dumbshit that automatically makes it an error!
Cubano chant!
El Cubano vive! La lucha sigue!
25-30 bombs each from Soler and Chapman, and the rest of the summer should be fun.
Yaz has hit a shit ton of popups lately.
Pedro tell Jobu I can hit breaking ball now!!HR nice if he gets rolling and help out Chappy and others..
Hoooo. Harry is all over the place but hanging in there.
Productive out, well done.
Hey now.
Thairo gonna yard.
Got the lead on that weird triple by Luciano .Mets pitcher just as wild as Harry after his 1st inning 6 pitches .Baer sucking up to Boomer just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Matos with the contact and the RBI. The kid gets it so far, get a pitch to make contact with when you have guys at 3rd with less than 2 outs…
I bet the Mets are Wild about Harry.
flashback to Cain beaning that met years ago–3Bman? Wright? The side piece on the helmet saved Nimmo from serious injury.
Damm well one flap down for Nimmo just saved his life from major concussion /broken jaw!
Dirty Harry drilled him throwing 98, and then he shakes it off and even steals second, man that’s a gamer player…
Giants are letting Harrison find his way in the bigs, despite his youth, regardless of the wildness, the gopher balls, the inability to stop runners from stealing. They should do the same with MatRam…
He is getting his ass kicked tonight.
And, he’ll continue to get starts…
2 previous starts he went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs each time.
Tonight he goes 5 and gives 5 putting Giants in a hole while taken deep twice.
Last season he pitched 100 innings, this season so far 60. If he isn’t much better he’ll only get 8-10 more 5 inning starts and be shut down. Disappointing outing tonight. didn’t help team much despite given lead.
WOW! Matos!
Matos with another great catch.
This kid is turning into a one-human highlight reel…
Matos is looking like a real deal CFer. Bet he could play in RF next year when Lee is back.
Until they extend both Yaz&Slater for 2 more years..
Guess he can keep the blue glove now..Nice grab Matos
I don’t get the error on Yaz he had a long way just to get to that ball the hitter was getting to 2B easily while the other guy stayed at 3rd?
Javy giving Miller shit for not playing. Harrison isn’t clued in to where his pitches are going
Does the Mets pen suck?
And we go again geez back to back HR’s!
Dirty Bombs means I need a dirty martini 🍸
Well he got the 3rd out atleast ,to the warning track! Harry’s night is over.Pomegranate anyone? His arm is the least fatigued in the pen..
Harrison has to get his pitch counts down. 96 pitches in 5 innings isn’t going to cut it in the bigs. And, will shorten his first full season, most likely, as they probably will limit his innings count later in the season. Again, I’ll say his motion and follow through are awkward IMO, and leads to pitching balls high in the zone, available for clobbering…
ARM SLOT as Krukow always says Snarkk 🤪
But Harry does not finish off his follow thru properly, thus those constant high and away easy takes. Then he seems to be to amped up and rushes his pitches and he made a stupid meatball pitch to Martinez who’s strictly a dead red FB professional hitter who’s not going to miss that.
Yeah, ok, arm slot. But, his follow through is short, and ends upper body high, and I think does not use all the leg power he probably has. Call me old school, but Tom Seaver’s motion and leg drive and follow through are the classic way to put together a pitching motion, adjusted for body type and size, of course, and L or R.
I’m no pitching coach. But after 55+ years of watching MLB pitchers, this kid needs work on his motion, IMHO. Better control, fewer gopher balls. The way he ends up after a pitch, there is no way he’s going to field many balls hit his way, either…
Oh well. Avila looks like a whirling dervish out there.
Down 6-2, 8th inning. Right where we want them.
Yaz with a magic hit.
Luciano with a Mr. Lucky hit.
Luciano jogs to 2nd.
Yeah, whats up with that.
Solid Estrada, gets one back.
Oh BABY!!!!!!!
Bailey slam!
Bailey for the lead. BAM.
HELL YES!!
If the score’s got you down, just hang on to the eighth.
FUCK YEAH!!!!
The Bailey Double Double for 4RUNS!!
Wow that was bitchin for his 1st Career Grandslam!
3rd straight game they battled back!
Unca nailed it with:
“Down 6-2, 8th inning. Right where we want them.”
… except for one caveat … we needed to have TWO outs. Ha!! Amazing!
Can of corn! Nice use of italics, BTW!
well said .
Oooooo. In Search Of the elusive shut down inning.
Yazzzz!
Insurance as Yaz leaves yard!
He’s a Yastrzemski, they love hitting dingers in NY.
Yaz joins the party.
YAZZER!!! Upper Deck Special!! 8-6 nice add on!
DOUBLE FUCK YEAH!!
I’m heading out to my workshop to re-up. These past few games, I’m outta nails to chew.
WTF? Yaz never saw it.
oh Yaz! wtf.
