Speechless
I didn’t want to overstate it but I texted my buddy dafingaZ last night wondering if that was…the best….baseball….game…..I’ve ever……seen? Considering just regular season games and not considering implications of the win (like it didn’t send them to the post season or win them a World Series).
Think about it carefully and weigh in. I know recency bias is in play here but have you ever seen a better SF Giants baseball game in your life?
Best game that I can remember. Chapman is fun as hell to watch at 3rd.
and birddog checks in from Switzerland. The Flap continues to span the globe!
well, lot of fun lately watching bats up and down lineup come alive during rallies. Pitching and D little shakier, though there have been number of super plays by Matos Chapman Estrada and Wade Jr. Luciano is out of sync, letting ball play him and arm is erratic as well. 3-4 yesterday at plate while Matos (w rbi) and Ramos 0-8.
for bay area heroes Barclay Goodrow is kind of like Ishi, scrub reserve who will never have to buy drink anywhere locally.
As life long Rangers fan, Goodrow’s OT winner was sweet. 4 goals all season, now 4 goals in 12 playoff games. Losing first two games at home would have been death knell for Rangers.
“Doval did heck of a job just staying composed and making pitches”, said Bailey. Martinez K on 100 heat was impressive.
“We’ll figure that out later” said Melvin when asked about Luciano late game difficulties. both per Slush in Chron today.
I was watching the game after it started, so Biggy was ahead by a few innings. I reminded him not to spoil it for me after Bailey’s grand slam and thankfully he stayed quiet, but I knew something interesting was unfolding. Bottom of the ninth was the most exciting baseball I can remember.
i respected your request.
One thing is for sure, that was the latest bestest game I’ve seen.
The Yaz magic squib base hit let ya know that something good was about to happen.
Many highlights from this one, dats fer sure.
Terrible defense doesn’t really thrill me that late in the game.
Lucky seems to get the yips late. This is another example of that.
terrible defense? How bout epic defense? I could watch that Chapman play 1000 times and never get sick of it or the call (which was outstanding by Flemm)
The Estrada diving play too, w Wade Jr. snagging throw and staying on bag. Late Night needs to be in there full time, vs. LHP too. Love Flores but, might be time to add more versatile IF defender. Offense lately is not the problem. Giants are top half NL for runs HRs and lot of other numbers.
Yeah with Loco for one of the best late innings finishes ever! Down 6-2 as their kid Scott tissues kept baffling them till finally PC got him, I thought they might have a chance. And their BP collapsed walked in a run before Bailey’s blast for The Grandslam lead.Damm lucky they got that insurance HR by Yaz to make it 8-6!! In this crazy 8-7 usual coronary arteries clogged finish..
Chapman such an incredible play on that 4 hop full bunt barehanded throw and magnificent scoop by Wade to stay on the bag. Easily the play could of went the other way a crazy bounce past Wade and it’s the Pirates walking off in victory. So many intangibles on just that play.Even a tie at 8-8 was there on that play..
Chapman still was sweating in clubhouse later that was his most exciting ground ball saving walkoff ever that he could ever recollect.
You know everybody sees a walkoff HR are hit are even a stupid chickenshit walkoff walk, but a game winning defensive walkoff is right there for adrenaline players and fans to see imo..
How was it possible to pack so many emotional moments into two innings and end with one of the most beautifully executed infield plays you’ll ever see?
The best? I don’t know. I could probably find a few shutouts and walkoffs in my memory that might compete. But I’ll surely never forget this one.
It’s the best Giants game this year that I didn’t watch or listen to the ending of.
Friday evening of the best three day weekend of the year. I was in a good mood even before Bailey’s blast and didn’t want to spoil it should they end up losing. Listened to an episode of The Moth on KQED recorded in SF instead, then some obscure 60’s tunes on KVHS (a high school community radio station in Concord).
Something I learned back in 2010, when with one notable exception (a marathon AB by Matsui with the bases loaded), I decided to never watch Brian Wilson pitch again, it was much more entertaining to read the comments section on The Splash. Based on Unca_Chuck’s comment at the top of the page, figured they’d lost, then came the Chapman posts in all caps.
Off the top of my head, my favorite game, one that I sometimes cite to counter the WAR mongers who don’t understand why wins matter to starters, was against the Rockies. The bullpen was chewed up on the East Coast, so they flew Matt Cain to Denver the day before so he could get a good night’s sleep and acclimate to the altitude. Come hell or high water he was going to pitch into the 7th inning. He fell behind by six runs in the 3rd, got and RBI single in the 4th, a sac bunt in the 5th, a shut down inning in the 6th for the decision.
Baseball games are self-contained events. This time of year, you don’t need to put them into context with the standings to enjoy the wins.
I’m with you Craig. Chapman play, with assist from Wade, after being 3-0 and just knowing we would blow it, the best defensive play I have seen in recent memory! asterisk for Blanco’s catch for Cain!
Watched the condensed version this morning. An instant classic as they say. Bailey’s slam landed on the roof of the Conor Gillaspie Memorial Shack…
Lulz. Such a great moment for Game Face and all Giants fans in attendance.
As far as spectacular finishes go it’s definitely one to remember.
Should we be rooting for a 4 run deficit?
First goes the perfect game, then the no-hitter, then the shutout, then the lead.
Yeah I’m not comfortable unless the Giants are down 5-0. Settle for 1 hit though for now..
well they got him into the stretch and made him work a bit.
Ramos vs. high hard one…they got him out that way last night.
Matos 4-26 0 extra base hits. Fight you way through this and keep playing D. Happens to everyone.
A hit!
lots of labor for Severino this inning. Good swings.
That’s the start
It was Wise to break up the no hitter 1st.
Wisely well placed shot to LF and now a walk!
Severino weakness is coming like back in SF when they lit him up for 5 runs..
OH Wow did Bailey crush that foul ball upper decker, now the basehit to tie it up!!
please no Pomeranian after this.
Nice trysley…
Sorry.
Still early, but I’m getting convinced the one irreplaceable Giant for the next decade is Bailey. He may have a shot at the HOF as a catcher, his all around D and pitcher handling and offense bode well for a HOF shot.
The concussions are worrying, however. If the worst happens, he can learn to play first, or be the DH over the long term. His bat is nothing to sneeze at, and certainly would improve if he did not play at the C position…
So your withdrawing your Joey Bart HOF recommendation Snarkk?
Yeah It’s hard to imagine Farhan striking gold, but Bailey is it.By far one of the best catchers in baseball, and hopefully the new latest helmet protection helmet ⛑️ does the trick cause they need him desperately behind the plate 4to 6 games a week.Casali a nice addition I’m comfortable with easily over Sabol,&Murphy..
Might be difficult to trade Murphy
That was a gift.
Is there a per team stat that shows the amount of turnstile player movement up and down and in/out of the 25/26 man roster? I assume there must be. I would like to see where the Giants stand in that stat. I’d like to see that stat in a time series and any correlation it has to games won per team per season…
bbref lists every player who made the active roster each season. I bet fan graphs does too. Comparison of those numbers per team should be easy to do. Adding up and down option moves would be tougher.
Analysts and commentators obviously track the active roster churns. 40 man and option churn stats aren’t so common.

Nice…
That would be useful data, especially post-Covid. Farhan gets knocked for it, but it’s a probably a useful tactic.
In 2010, Sabean did this a lot, sometimes just to block the Padres. Think Cody Ross.
Hopefully Patrick Bailey can mirror Ed Bailey’s career and be a true force in the league.
I loved Ed Bailey!
me too I always thought he was way better than Haller
Self defense.
Literally dodged a bullet…
That was a real Rodger Dodger self defense for Taylor…
CB Buckner lol always on the worst umpire list ( man he’s been around along time I believe?)getting roasted in the Mets dugout, but actually calling avoid game today..
And here goes “Highway to Homers” instantly giving up the tie! 4 Bombs in 19 innings including that Grandslam in Pittsburgh is not going to cut it.
Hey Loo cranking a nice 80 degrees in NY for those cold 🥶 Mets enjoy the Giants where real baseball is played..
WTF was Lindor doing just sitting there and taking 3rd strike not even interested in taking on Rodriguez filthy stuff?
Lindor’s a POS. One of the worst contracts ever…
Yes it’s a beautiful day here. Might go for a slow post game jog. It’s a sad sight. Last week at the park I got lapped twice by some geezer with scoliosis…
so the goofy tiaras on the Mets helmets today represent a bridge?
I thinks it’s supposed to be the Queensboro Bridge. The bridge and the helmet both suck…
Oh hell it’s on the hats too, tho less prominent.
Truly a WTF AB by Yaz
Diaz throwing upper 90’s is just NBD these days…
Tied up.
Wade gets it done, but damn, gunned down by Marte.
Mets D bails out Diaz.
Even a LateNight Hamstring can’t stop Latenight Lamonte from delivering the tying run today!
If he has a sore leg, the first base coach should have held him up.
Oh Christ, here comes Jackson.
Damm batting practice Jackson we’re screwed.
ah, good omen.
Just horrific.
Every guy on the Flap makes that play…
Nothing is easy
You give up one run, you get yourself a set of chains…
Phew.
Melvin is learning to save Doval for the 10th inning in these games.
How many more Luciano errors can be tolerated? Is he just skittish in critical situations? I’m for letting the prospects play, but this is getting serious. I have to wonder about his coaching in the minors. Wotus the fielding guru has some magic to work …
Keith Hernandez just rattled off 5 reasons Wisely shouldn’t bunt here…
Casali using his legs.
Nice
3-hit day for Wisely!
Wow, Wisely drives in the ghost runner, just like that. Nice.
Add on, now…
Luciano would have turned that
Ooops!
Lindor’s on ludes.
See my 12:59…
ibid.
Another Bailey slam would be nice here…
Watch the game, SOAD, ok?
I posted that BEFORE Bailey came to the plate. OK BOAC?
Thanks, CB…
Yeah, swing the bat Yaz!
no doubt about it–a devastating ninth inning error from Luciano and good things will follow.
Mets played/pitched that inning like the Giants were playing a month ago…
A bases Yazzer Triple. clears the bases 7-2!!!
They are going to SWEEP this pathetic Mets team book it!
Even their owner Steve Cohen is texting out to the fans I’m sorry how they’re playing!!
Over .500!!! 4 straight wins!!!Keep it going!
will there be a parade before Monday’s game?
Another comeback victory!
oh great song, well chosen!
Heard it a couple days ago, so kept it in mind ..
Dovall breaks the bromide that closers don’t do well coming into the game with a big lead. 1-2-3, sweet…
Rolling.
So, I guess we keep Luciano so he can commit a huge error late every game, and we win in extras. Sounds fine to me !
Wow, The baseball God’s are shining down.
Just wow. Down in 8th or 9th and win for 4th time in a row??? Crazy!
A Giants victory and The Clash. That’s a great day!
