Four!
Compared to Friday night’s game, yesterday nearly had me nodding off. And yet AGAIN we come from behind and fuck our way to yet another W. I’m not sure what taking more ground balls is gonna do for Luciano. This appears to now be mental. And this is a bad time for that.
I think I remember reading Mac is going to today’s game. Manaea got a little payback on his mind but probably less now that Kap is gone. Manaea no likey Kappy.
Fielding stats are still kind of all over the place for year to year accuracy, etc. but…looking at Nick Ahmed, most years he has played a lot for AZ Fielding pct. ranged from .975 to .985 w DRS 15-25.
Someone on TA or MCC said something about Luciano numbers so I looked up minor league stats on B/R.
2022 pct. was .928 for 50 games High A Eugene w 14 errors.
2023 pct was .956 7 errors 42 games for Richmond AA
2024 pct. was .930 at Sac 7 errors in 32 games
Doesn’t cover everything about range and statcast data (or whether errors are throwing/glove) but none of these numbers add up very well.
Ha, just noticed title of thread…”Four” is name of one of my fav jazz tunes ever, made famous by Miles Davis on Workin lp for Prestige one of 4 he recorded 1956 (to be released later dates) to get out of his contract so he could make big time $$ w Columbia
Bandmates of classic quintet were Coltrane Red Garland Paul Chambers Philly Joe Jones. Tune was actually written by noted blues man and alto player Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson.
Once tried to call out of bounds play “4” for Asian girls team I was coaching and one of them threw a fit. Turns out number 4 in Mandarin and Cantonese sounds similar to death or must die in different tone and character.
Just got on the train in NJ for the long slog to Flushing, didn’t bring a broom. I think Manaea pitched the game the Mets won in NY. I hope Webb is on today, there have been times on the East Coast when he hasn’t exactly been sharp.
wow, enjoy Mac. post of yours is 3 hours before game time.
I wanted to take the ferry into NYC, but we would’ve missed first couple innings. Now at Penn Station.
Ooops, meant Maneaea won game in SF.
From time Crawford became regular SS 2012 to 2019 fielding pct. was never lower than .970 except for 2014 at .967 when he made career high 21 errors in 142 games. 2011 as rook made 7 errors in 53 games. Otherwise Craw pct. numbers always btw .970 and .983 in 8 years before Pandemic.
I remember Omar Vizquel’s annual fielding % always topped .980, and occasionally went over .990. I loved watching him play.
Luciano’s pretty good at spearing LDs but I can’t imagine him in the OF. Maybe a DH in the making, if he starts to employ that power. 1.027 OPS in 26 PAs right now.
I’m not worried about Luciano as others are. He’s a 22 year old SS at the most demanding position besides Catcher&CF. Crawford was 2 years older at 24 when he got to the show and struggled as well on offense and defense, and Twin used to love Ripping Him a New One constantly to say this guy will never make it, can’t hit a lick and suspect glove.Uhh he turned it around to be the best SS the team has ever had.
Luciano Will be solid with more consistent reps, his hitting as been quite good enough to keep him in the Lu,but SS it’s just a position that’s magnified the most cause of the amount of plays your involved in.It’s interesting that last year maybe cause they were out of it he only made 1 error in 13 games..980 fielding yeah small sample. In 2 years he can easily be one of the best SS in the league it just takes patience, it worked for Crawford..
for a few years fg had Crawford at the top of their most-difficult-play-maker ranking. They posted a dazzling highlight vid. Susan Slusser, newly transferred to the Giants beat, raved about the revelation of watching him daily. Luciano has a long way to go.
We’re talking about routine plays on balls hit right at him that Luciano can’t handle. They need to be turned into outs, particularly in pitch count era. Not saying Luciano can’t do that eventually but don’t blame Melvin at all for throwing Wisely in there.
Like to see more of Wisely. Maybe give Luciano some OF starts and get short out of his head.
when Luciano was lower in the minors I commented I saw maybe more of a 2b along the lines of Soriano who eventually transitioned to OF. So when we saw him last summer in AA and Harrisburg I noted here I was surprised that he was more filled out physically and seemed to fit short well enough. But hard to convert into a SS. Do we know how much before AA did he play short regularly? And beating up on the bad teams in baseball is the name of the game. Let’s play .500 against the Phillies and Yanks and I’m happy…
Yeah, we have to start playing decent ball against the good teams. Otherwise we will just be another mediocre team in the middle of the pack. But maybe this year that’s ok we look to have ignited a spark and made the game interesting again.
Manaea looks very cool and deliberate.
I don’t see all the continuing buzz about Reds SS Elly De la Cruz who’s made 23 errors at SS .950 pct in 117 games( which sucks over 2 years.Same age as Luciano but because of his speed (SB’s) and inconsistent power numbers, batting .247 they automatically handed him the job.And at 6’5 he should not be a SS more of a centerfielder.
and Webb looked terrific until he turned his ankle on that otherwise well played out at 1B.
Thanks for the gift run on your error Nido.Your 3rd basemen wasn’t even near the bag when you airmailed the throw..
Wisely!
There’s your starting SS.
Luciano just got Wally Pipped..Another Wise start by Melvin..
Wisely smacking the ball right now as he adds a HR!!2-1 Giants!!
Lindor’s my favorite Met.
The Bailey Bazooka strikes again!!!
Hope SF can keep it close, add on in the 9th…
Lindor comes thru again!
Nice Walker’s pitching well.
and here we go with the dink parade
Doval
Flemm on crack again..Soler kinda has his swing back! .217 ? Yeah Dave keep puffing on that pipe..
Oh boy it’s Tyler ChopperRodgers time and the wheels are falling off!
hooo. That’s one.
never have Rogers close. never
fuck
you gotta pull this guy right now
Man, we need a double play here, big time.
Or let em tie it up.
Damn.
Fuck you Rogers.
Fucking Rogers.
double fuck
The dude doesn’t waste any time. Immediately goes about blowing the game. WTF Melvin.
oh good. Let him lose it comletely
Goddamit Fuck you Rodgers!!!!!
Rodriguez if not Doval should be the backup closer!!
there you go.
Cue James
with the glowing review of Rogers
What a miserable performance. Why the fuck would you ever put that turd in a save situation.
Two steps forward one step back.
I said Never.
completely predictable
Melvin gave this game away
Idiot
that motherfucker stuck his padded elbow into the slow pitch.
Bad luck Tyler.
the pitch was a foot and a half inside. No ump calls that.
no it wasn’t and it was 75 mph. Even you could’ve gotten out of the way.
The ball was tailing inside of course he’s gonna take the hit.
That sucked.
Doval threw 9 pitches yesterday. Rodriguez is a much better option. Again, fuck you Melvin.
I am so done with Rogers.
where’s Rodriguez? I woulda pulled Roger’s after 2 guys
Fuck FUCK Fuck the sweep was complete and then you Fucking bring in Rodgers!!! Fuck!!!
And why not Rodriguez? Because he’s young? Fuck that, Melvin, he has closer’s stuff and he throws strikes. Way too much contact from Rogers. He had nothing today.
Melvin has explaining to do.
we All Said No to Rogers.
He said yes.
why the phuck would you put a guy who pitches to contact as a closer? Insanity
Mac deserved better.
If I hear more stats on here on how good Rogers is, I’m going to Phucking vomit…
Complete waste of a good start by Webb. Fuck this pisses me off.
Ridiculous post game radio show saying Doval not available, acting like there was no other alternative choice but Rogers. Pathetic
Stupid ass Melvin uses both Rodriguez &Doval in a blowout game yesterday why??
Needed today in the 9th neither available but Jolly Rodgers Fucking Crazy Ass Dumb!!!
Coulda had the sweep in this . . .
Melvin and his abject worshiping at the altar of the fucking vets is disgusting, shortsighted, and lame.
It pisses me off no end. Rodriguez should be the one to lose the 8th-9th role, not be pushed back by fucking Rogers.
Huh. Haven’t watched the Indy 500 in years.
So here were the options: Erik HR/BB Miller, Luke Jackson and Taylor the evil twin Rogers.
Rodriguez and Doval not available. So tell me who of those 3 would you have chosen?
The Tyler Rogers hate is just plain wrong. He was best guy available, unless you really think the other 3 mentioned are better than him…which they aren’t.
What’s the rationale for pitching Doval yesterday with a 5 run lead? Because Jackson fucked up last week?
Isn’t the closer for save situations? Like today?
The only thing I can think of is what was the score when Doval started warming up last night? I have no idea, but I was wondering what he was doing in there, the same way I was wondering why Dusty used Worrell in the Game 5 bombing in 2002…
It was tied. But they had time to get someone else ready as there were no outs when the 5 runs scored.
I’m with Chuck. It’s not unusual to get a closer starting to “grease up”, as Kruk says, in the top of the 9th, then the club pushes the lead in that frame beyond the 3 run save line, and depending on how lathered up the closer has gotten and the size of the new lead, the manager sits the closer and gets somebody else up to come in. IMO Melvin has not exactly shown stellar managing the first quarter of the season. I think there would be no way Bochy would throw a Tyler Rogers in a 3-1 save situation to close out a sweep…
Bottom line Giants had 4-2 road trip that could very easily have been much worse. Melvin’s guys play hard for him including the new SS, at least for today, kids and vets. Webb had 2 strong bounce back outings on road trip, very good sign. Things could be lot worse. I’ll take it.
Bottom line is BoTard makes some questionable moves.
Rogers did lose the game. But that happens to all closers–they do lose games when given the lead. Doval blew his first save this past week and his appearances lately haven’t exactly been smooth sailing. Mariano Rivera lost Game 7 of the WS to DBax. Good road trip. Move on.
Nimmo’s lead off high bouncer way above the mound, just touched by the end of Tyler’s glove, was horrible luck. Maybe if Luciano had been in there to field it and throw wildly past Wilmer for an error everything would’ve been ok.
Doval lost 6 games last year and 6 in 2022. Rogers last outing actually was a 9th inning save vs. Pirates May 23. Rodriguez and Doval had worked 4 days out of last 5 and were UN available.
he is Not a closer. Get real
Cmon Willie Giants had a 7-2 lead going to the bottom of the 10th Saturday and Melvin needs to get Doval in for mop up duty making him unavailable today.Tyler with a 5 run lead though never safe should of been the call and Doval easily goes today.Just dumb using him yesterday!
I’m pretty sure Doval was warmed up and ready to roll when the Giants started scoring and I’m pretty sure most managers put their closer in after they’ve gone through their warmups. So, I get why he was used yesterday, but still, I’m not a big Rogers fan and you could see he was losing it, so not sure why Melvin kept him in.
when Tyler loaded the bases, tv camera showed someone in the dugout hang up the BP phone and nod and say yes, to Melvin. I was sure they’d give Tyler the hook. I was wrong.
check this out.
Completely insane call to end a game. The fielder ran into the runner, but the runner is called for interference, to end it. Lunacy…
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/05/24/white-sox-orioles-interference-call/
Is that the play where the IF fly rule had been called, so the SS didn’t need to catch the ball to get the out and freeze every runner, thus making any interference moot as a practical matter, and where the allegedly interfered with SS easily made the catch anyway?
“My effort today kind of put a stink on the road trip, but a great road trip for the boys,” Rogers said.
The memory fade has already started for Mr. Rogers.
It’s a shitty fuckin’ day in the neighborhood…
The highlight of my day at the game was my Mets fan buddy being told by security to turn his shirt inside out or else he’d get kicked out. He wore an orange shirt with a picture of a man from the shoulders up that read: Meet Dick — Dick Is A Yankees Fan, and on the back, DON’T BE A DICK.
it was great till it wasn’t. Melvin had plenty of time to switch h out relievers yesterday. That was dumb.
Tyler Rogers
Career ERA/WHIP: 2.90/1.14
9th inning numbers: 4.69/1.40
Extra innings 7.94/1.30
we get it. You don’t know why Melvin had to go to Tyler in the ninth and even worse stick with him after he loaded the bases. No one on the outside knows.
Thanks for your input.
