A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Hot, Hot, Hot

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 18, 2010

Well, here we are in 2nd place, currently holding the longest win streak in MLB (5). Not bad. Buster Posey is giving me the same feeling I had when WIll came up— every at bat brings me to the edge of my seat. And he’s delivering unreal results. I don’t understand why NO ONE pitches this guy inside–he’s proven to every scout in America that he’s got legitimate power to right field. And that arm to second base, wow, we are lucky to have him and to get to watch this story unfold….

she doesn't like baseball but she has no problem with me buying her all the shwag

Great pic, Flavor. Buster’s RF blast was another Alec Baldwin moment from Glen Garry Glenn Ross: “What’s my name? Fuck you – that’s my name.”

Bochy want to keep all starters. The tidbits coming from the club is that there will be no trade. What does this tell me? A move is in the works.

Good to see some hitting for a change. Everyone got into the act except Renteria (no surprise) and Sanchez. Cain looked the best he’s been for a while. Middle/setup relief still need help: Ray and Casilla stunk up the joint. How ’bout Posey for Player-Manager?

If the inside half really is Buster’s weakness, they’ll get around to “busting” him in there at some point. I’m not sure it is though. He has a mighty quick bat and a lovely, balanced swing. Buster power, baby.

yeah, the ‘personal catcher’ thing w/ Eli is silly, disproven. And if one subscribes to that need to PR Whitey for Posey for that supersonic extra speed bump, you would start Posey at C today, to be subbed later. Which opens 1B for Ishi.

Really starting to like the look of the July schedule. At 10-4 on the month the team has picked up a fine head of steam, while the Mets hope Johann Santana can stop the offensive deluge which has characterized a Giants team now close to hitting on all cylinders. The pitching match-ups look good from tomorrow on as Bumgarner gets the first start in the 7-gamer starting in LaLaLand and then storming into Phoenix.

No brainer that the Giants brass has realized there is gold in them thar mound masters making up the Rotation. When you got the best SPs in baseball, why mess with success. Drrty brings it today and the Gigantes could have a full head of stem built up for the in-division road trip. Excellent timing for turning that bad, bad divisional record into something more closely approaching hopeful mediocrity. 15-21, say, would look one whole lot better than 9-20.

Though i’d love to see a trade with the Nats for Josh Willingham for a basket of prospects, in order to get that OBP machine in the two-slot; SF now has a creditable offense like yesterday’s demonstration made clear. Buster Posey, looking more and more like the Rookie of the Year, had another dynamic outburst. He was matched by torrid Torres. Both Uribe and Pablo had great days at the plate, with Panda producing his best RBI total in a bunch of while. The resurrections of Uribe and Sandoval yesterday could be a huge portent of a successful second half. It’s looking more and more like that inner Panda is bursting out once again and he alone could carry the team. But Pablo is hardly alone. Four highly productive bats in any given lineup can win most games provided the pitching is there to balance that offense.

With four batters becoming highly productive, along with chip-ins from the rest of the lineup, the Giants are achieving an offense which is getting a playoff-bound look, Check out comparative team stats and you will note that we have been climbing from the middle reaches of mediocrity on a seasonal basis into one of growing respectability.

Three games into the break and already the Rox and LaBumbos are breathing fumes and dust. Padres, even while beating up on hapless Arizona, are hearing footsteps. The stomping is growing louder. There is a looming presence. The Giant has awakened. It is time to wrest the West.

It’s not a good idea to start the same catcher everyday. Wear and tear is tremendous . . . For example, Kurt Suzuki is a good catcher, but he usually rests at least once a week, albeit, he has started every game but two since June 15, so he’s deserving of a break (which he is getting in today’s A’s game). Don’t read too much into Posey not starting at catcher.

    • mrmrbill's avatar mrmrbill said, on July 18, 2010 at 1:04 pm

Then give him a real day off because 1B is still playing. Which again leads back to the ‘start Ishi’ conclusion.

  15. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 18, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Ultimately, I think Posey very likey will prove too valuable a hitter to tire him out in 145 games behind the plate every year, and ruin his knees. He’s proven he’s a very good athlete with a gun arm, and should find a position home in a couple of years somewhere other than catcher. Hopefully, one of the Giants young catchers in the minors will prove adequate defensively to sub in so Posey can play elsewhere…

So WTF could have happened over the break? Is this code for something? His divorce got final, he’s back together with his wife? He was constipated and went to a Aurvedyan clean out clinic in Marin? What in 3 days could have changed so much? Whatever it is, it should keep happening. BTW, that AB was pathetic by El Presidente….

There you go, Sanchez walks the #8 guy on four pitches outta the blue, and he scores. And, lets a comebacker go through that if he fields it, he gets the lead runner at 2nd and that #8 guy doesn’t score. Sanchez never ceases to be maddening and tantalizing — just seems to have a recurring problem of suddenly losing concentration…

Sanchez is pitching like those games when you’re waiting for him to just friggin blow up with a 4 run giveaway inning. Never gets a first strike, always behind and then just throws a hit me 91 mph fastball down the middle. He’s got to find a way to change that crap, or he’s going to get hammered. Maybe Bochy needs to get in his face again, if he hasn’t already…

  31. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 18, 2010 at 2:15 pm

If the opposition announcers are making jokes about Panda’s weight, it’s not only rude, but another sign that SF has got to get his weight under control in the offseason…

  32. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on July 18, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Sanchez is getting squeezed a bit here but Sanchez is doing alright for how he was getting knocked around early. I disagree with the idea that he’s melting down constantly. He has made huge strides in that aspect.

That outfield grass is fucking atrocious

  33. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on July 18, 2010 at 2:21 pm

Snarkk, Sandoval’s weight issue is squarely on him. Dude is at the top of his profession and has a chance to be a great player. If he can’t get it under control it is a problem. Supposedly he’s still riding the bike after games but I find that hard to believe.

  34. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 18, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Reno, he’s definitely better than he used to be re: meltdowns. No question. But, the guy is 27 and has been pitching in MLB for 3 years. Bumgarner seems to have his head more together at age 20. With the stuff he has, Sanchez just seems to be wasting it sometimes. He gives Santana an 0-2 belt high curve, and Santana gets a single. How many times has the opposing pitcher got on against Sanchez. A lot, it shouldn’t happen with Sanchez’ stuff…

  35. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on July 18, 2010 at 2:27 pm

I agree. I’m on the fence about what they should do with Sanchez. One the one had he may be peaking and his value is as high as it can be. On the other hand maybe he’s like Johnson was and finally gets it together at this late stage and strings together utter dominance for a few years.

  36. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 18, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Why not let Torres try a steal of third with a LHd pitcher and a RH batter and one out? Unless his groin is still tweaked, I don’t get it. Santana is going well, so why not try to tie up the game by using your only speed guy? Instead, Franchez swings at the first pitch, grounds to third, now it’s two out and the sac fly is gone….

  37. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on July 18, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Does Sanchez even have a change up? Pretty much FB, Slider and the FB is the only pitch that he seems to have consistently.

  38. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 18, 2010 at 2:43 pm

I think Sanchez does have a change up/fork ball of some kind. Throws it rarely. Now he seems to be getting into a groove, he’s using his breaking stuff more. He’s got such great stuff, if he could consistently get his head around it, he’d be nearly unhittable and shoo in for a 15+ win season every year. That’s what’s so frustrating about watching him. I think a big problem is that in close games he just doesn’t bust out his good stuff, and tries to nibble, get’s in trouble, then loses composure. When he gets an early lead, he’s relaxed and gets into a groove early…

  39. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 18, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Burrell hasn’t been hitting great lately, but he generally takes a good AB. That one there, he took a coupla pitches to extend the count that hardly any other Giant would have taken. Then, he gets the 2-2 FB and smoked it, Wright couldn’t handle it. Nice AB…

Just heard someone from the crowd shout up the booth, “Hey Keith. You awake??”

The play-by-play guy says, “Your reputation precedes you, deservedly or not!”

Keith says, “I wish I had something to say back.”

I told you guys 10 days ago Bochy wouldn’t keep starting Ishi. Being hot doesn’t matter to Bochy, if you’re young and don’t have a big contract. He’s gotta constantly play perceived matchups, and go with vets. Ishi is 2 for 9 vs. LHs this year, which is to me, neither here nor there. He’ll take El Presidente over Ishi, you watch for post game comments — because he wanted to rest Posey (tho he’s still playing) and/or the personal catching thing. That’s why he’s Bonehead…
