A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bad Pitching + Bad hitting = Bad Combo

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 19, 2010

They’ve hit 4 bombs in the last 2 games, that’s nice. But that’s not enough. Way too many “1-4,0-4’s” in the boxscores. And our pitching has come up ant-small so far. Dirrrrty may or may not need to pitch a pearl today–the way he’s been pitching I’d expect a line like 5.1inn/4ER/4BB/7K.  Bottom line is, regardless of what Dirrrrty does, we need to HIT the baseball. For hits. Lots of them. Ducks on the pond. Clutch hits. All that jazz….

This has been a horrendous 2 game swing, every facet of the game has been worthy of averting your eyes. But it’s 2 freaking games out of 162. The team isn’t trippin’ on it, you guys shouldn’t either. Join Denny on the ledge if you must, but don’t jump. Yet….

Drawing pitches is one of the primary goals of the 1 hole hitter.. Of COURSE you’d like it to end in a hit or walk. But that doesn’t negate a basic tenet of lead off hitting. Restrain yourself when you have no fucking idea what you’re saying.

Here’s a 3 team blockbuster that works financially and philosophically for all:

Giants get: Hanley Ramirez & Aramis Ramirez
Cubs get: Aaron Rowand & Mark DeRosa
Marlins get: Pablo Sandoval, Jonathan Sanchez, and Kosuke Fukudome

I don’t think anything else but such a strong starting performance could have given the Giants (OK, maybe just the fans) a bigger boost. Bout time. After that meltdown against the Padres, i felt the need for some time off from the blog and not much time following the team, deciding to hold off on commenting till there was a W.

So Drrrrty was the one to snap the schneid. Good job. That bottom of the 7th was particularly impressive with just a handful of pitches thrown. Romo did not pick the worst possible time to be erratic, but it did ruin the shutout. Oh well, the victory was and is what counts. A loss tonight would have pretty well done in the Giants for the season. Winning means the WC is still in play, though by now it may be a bit of a stretch to hope for a meltdown by the Dagos. Between their BP and their lucky charms, they just keep on winning somehow.

Can the rest of the starters pick it up from Sanchez’ superb performance tonight? To have any kinda chance that has to happen. Otherwise, tonight’s big win was just an outlier. Anyway, it was one outta three against a sizzling Phillies team and now its off to St. Louis against a team which, like the Giants has had ups and downs lately. Hoping the rests for Torres and Huff helps bring them around. It sure would be nice to see the offense hitting on more than a couple cylinders.

That’s not what I said, fuck. Don’t lie. I said that drawing pitches was instructive for the other hitters. Argue that with K and K and the many other baseball people who know that taking pitches is crucial for the lead off hitter. It’s not even an arguable point.

Snarkk, I caught a lot of grief when I threw Guillen’s name out in June as a potential acquisition. I thought he was hitting enough dingers to justify picking him up. We should have had him though for the Atlanta and the San Diego series. Those may have played out differently with him.
