A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

At What End of the Rotation are We at Right Now?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 20, 2010

Dirrrrty saved us yesterday and now we turn to MadBum for another necessary step-up stud performance. This Dirrrrty/Bum exacta  feels preferable to a Lincecum/Cain debacle, doesn’t it? Not sure where Zito fits in, he’s a shaky 3, I guess. We don’t really have a NUMERO UNO  these days, as is evidenced by the starting staffs stunning failure to ever notch a win for themselves. Dirrrrty is the only guy to “stand out” in the win column with his bounty of two over the last 3 weeks. That’s freaking pathetic…..

This is a dangerous time for the team with the starting pitching laboring on the edge of unreliable and marginally competent. But Dirrrrty’s performance last night can’t be understated. It was huge, maybe the best start of the year for one of those 5…….

I thought we matched up well with Philly but they easily took 2 from us. I feel the same way about St Louis, I think we match up well with them. Regardless of what happens tonight, the spotlight will be squarely on Timmy tomorrow. We can’t win this thing without a #1 to carry us the rest of the year. Dirrrrty isn’t a #1, despite his 2 (two) victories over the last 17 days. Mr Cy Young is that guy. Or maybe he’s not, we’ll find out soon enough…….

So much angst on the blog . . . I went to Breckenridge yesterday and did some mountain biking (slopes are used for that when they are sans snow . . . definitely not as smooth), then had an early dinner at one of their fine restaurants. When I got home, the G-Men were well on their way to another win.

Consequently, I tend to side with what Flav stated the other day, i.e., “But it’s 2 freaking games out of 162.” Suggest you guys have some fun today prior to putting on your “game face” this evening. 🙂

Blade, I’m in bend ore doing similar things. I don’t know if it’s the river or the mountain air or whatever, but this city boy is in a much more tolerant mood when I get my fill of the great outdoors for a few weeks a year….

Why is it that a starter struggles and the bull pen is outstanding and just the reverse when a start comes in pitches and gem and then the bullpen blows it. What the fuck is Romo’s problem, pitches great ball for two or three games and them pitches like shit!! This is one of the few problems I have with Bochy, he does not appear to know when to yank a pitcher!! Romo should have been pulled before giving up the two runs. If that had been the normal Giants game where they only score 1-2 runs that game would have been lost or tied!!

Agreed, Blade. Cards swept Reds and then went into a tailspin, losing 4 in a row, to fall 3 and a half behind Cincy. Even Wainwright got out pitched.

Guillen has some hits so far…but remember how well FS, Nate and even Whitey started, too. All these guys were way over .300. I’d rather see more of Ishi with Burrell Torres Huff, at least vs. RHP.

Shout out to SanDog: Indians signed Kyle Blair, the Aztec Ace from Los Gatos, who was 4th round pick I believe.

But Guillen has 16 of his 17 hrs against RH pitching.

“pitches great ball for two or three games . . . ” I think Romo’s been quite good for more than 2 or 3 games. He may even be due to give up another HR, now that his stats have evened out from early in the season, when he was subject to criticisms that ignored his track record.

Other than the double, Romo did just fine and has been consistent since May. He got Polanco after inheritiing a 2-0 count, Utley’s ball barely gets by Sanchez and he struck out Werth.

Dirty is a remarkable character. He can be maddening with his wildness, walks,HBP,and the like. How often have you thought “typical lefty space cadet” when watching him? He seems to have his own Sanchez channel that he’s tuned to,and often appears clueless about game situations and events. His verbal assault on the Padres was such an odd outburst because it was the last thing any of us would expect from him.

Last year he threw a no-hitter after he was threatened with Demotion! We all know he has real-deal swing-through stuff, and we’ve seen him mow people down with efficiency that even Timmy can’t match. He comes up with these remarkable performances that get us scratching our heads and thinking”did i really say we should trade this guy? It’s a wild ,wild ride with the former Ohio Dominican Panther isn’t it?

Anyway, Flav, you’re in Bend, OR.?? My mom grew up there. One of her best memories is when Kirk Douglas decided to film THE INDIAN FIGHTER up there and hired the whole poulace as extras. She said he took the time to chat for at least 15 minutes or so with everyone for the whole shoot. She had a blast. Not a great movie but entertaining enough. You should rent it when you get back to see how the place has changed, if at all. And a great cast. Walter Mathau, Elsa Martinelli, Lon Chaney Jr., Elisha Cook Jr., Walter Abel…

      • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on August 20, 2010 at 1:47 pm

It’s actually Wendover, and the reason it’s such a weird place is it’s right on the border between Nev and Utah, so all the Mormons go there to get weird. They follow all the rules in Utah, but what happens in Wendover, stays in Wendover.

What happened was, I was driving back to California with my roomate, and, while driving, the electrical system was systematically shutting down as we drove. It was 2:30 am. Miracle of miracles, we hit Wendover, and saw a gas station. My friend didn’t stop at the stop sign for fear of stalling completely, and ran it to get to the gas station. Of course there was a cop right there to see this. After explaining the situation, he checked my friend’s ID. It ws an expired Hawaiian license. So, he went on a merry trip to the local jail. I meanwhile found out that the alternator bracket was busted. They didn’t an alternator bracket for a beat-up 73 Audi Turdball at the gas station. After much trial and error, I jerry rigged about 8′ of wire into a loop harness, stuck a wrench in the wire loop, and turned it like those old balsa wood propeller planes. After I got it good and tight, I wedged the wrench into the radiator. This took about an hour, and when the judge took all my firend’s money ($220), the cop dropped him back off at the gas station.

Worked like a charm, and we made it to Santa Cruz . . .

One word of note on Romo, his strikeout pitch of Werth was brilliant and he was ahead of Sweeney for the third out and let him get away. If it was 1-2 run game, Bochy would not have had him in there and BWilson would have been brought in for the save as he did last night after the double.

But I also wanted to pass on a story linking a friend’s death (I just returned from his funeral) that ESPN ran last week while I was on vacation. The reason I bring it to this crew’s attention is that his son is a starting offensive lineman for Standford. He was tragically killed in that plane crash in Alaska last Monday with his former boss, Sen. Ted Stevens. He was a fantastic person that you all would have fit right in with.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 20, 2010 at 11:56 am

Romo’s been OK lately. But, not for tight situations, as you say. He’s a one trick pony. If he’s on and spotting that slurve, he’s golden, especially with righties — they have to swing after the ump starts giving him strike calls on it. But, if he’s off and the batters are taking it for balls, he’s in trouble because when he has to give in, his fastball is likely to get smoked. And, if the slurve hangs across a good portion of the plate, a good hitter is going to slam it…

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on August 20, 2010 at 12:33 pm

Small-plane flying is such a regular part of life in Alaska, you take it for granted, but you also feel a certain solidarity in mourning when a plane goes down. Everyone knows how dangerous it is simply because of the place — the weather, the terrain. Yet everyone flies all over in Cessnas, etc. Pontoons in the summer, for landing on lakes and rivers; skis in the winter, ditto. SOP. Sen. Steven undoubtedly had been flying into the bush with expert pilots his entire life. But the risk is always there. All politics aside, RIP.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 20, 2010 at 12:20 pm

His stats match up pretty fucking well with anyone’s. Career WHIP is less than 1, ERA is 2.68, 126K’s in 117 innings..

Any pitcher will get whacked if their bread and butter pitch is off. If the splitter doesn’t sink, if the 98 mph fastball is right down the middle, if the curve hangs…any pitcher in the game can be beat.

Going out on a limb, but not a Dennis lemming-led ledge: we will win tonight. The last time I consulted MLB_Clairvoyant_Channel.com it worked, for that Saturday SD game that went extras. So, kick back and light up a Red Auerbachian cigar. not saying it’ll be easy and breezy, but we’ll win, as surely as the Arch arcs over the Mississippi.

  57. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on August 20, 2010 at 5:27 pm

    Perfect.
Pawlie takes the time to correct the fact he forgot to capitalize an “n” in his previous post followed by Marvin saying “I wish we has…”

Nice job of hitting the other way (what’s new) by Buster, but how the hell does Farmer John not score on that double? Kuip and Flem said he appeared to not be running full speed. Panda last night, Bum tonight. This crap is becoming a full-blown pandemic. What’s with the lack of hustle? Using the dog days as an excuse is dogshit.

just what we want from our pitcher – running and sliding

Ed, by all accounts, if he’d even given 75% he could have scored standing. No excuse.

    Dennis,
At the Strasburg debut (yeah, I know, the gods easily roll down Mount Olympus), some kids were all over him ’cause he could have EASILY gotten asingle in his first AB even if he ran like our beloved Bengie.
