A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

With Authority

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 10, 2010

What a tone we set in San Diego last night. We didn’t just eek out a victory, we dominated them, burying the memories of their 8-0 start against us to start out the year. With their fans absent and our fans filling their seats, there’s no way the Padres can maintain their confidence……

Another chance tonight for Dirrrrty to back up his hubris against SD. Do you sit Buster? I know Bochy wants to give him a blow but I don’t think this series is the time to do it. And as bad as he looked on Wed in AZ he sure looked spry last night. He’s going to get a blow Monday and then Bochy could give him another one against the checked-out Dodgers or even Milwaukee. San Diego will be losing plenty of games next week when they head off to their 10 game roadie on Monday. Posey should sit then, not now…….

My home is under contract for sale (since last Saturday), so I haven’t had time to visit here. I have to find a new place to live by the 3rd of October.

However, the reason I’m here this morning is in regard to the explosion in San Bruno . . . I hope all of you are safe and similarly, that your friends and relatives whom might have been effected by this tragedy also are safe and sound. Be well and go Giants!

He’s a young guy and SF is in the thick of it. Sitting Posey would be a bad move.

Just saw the Burrell blast on the Giants web-site. Damn, he crushed that pitch.

Great win. Time for Sanchez to continue his recent run.

That was a bomb, one of those majestic, soaring shots. Burrell’s been great of late. Garland said after the game last night that the Giants are hungry. It sure looks that way from where I’m sitting.

Caught a piece on NPR just yesterday about concussion victims in the Middle East “conflicts”. They interviewed one couple, a vet and his wife – who broke down in tears describing his memory loss. Damn government plays it like it’s nothing as well – the guy’s getting redeployed into Afghanistan as a troop leader.

that was a nice message in the opening round, like a left hook to the liver body shot. Luv to see JS connect with a solid KO punch, like what he laid on LA last time out.

And I’m not benching anyone, Panda included. A day off to rest and recoup is fine, Posey could use one too, but everyone is pumped right now. Adrenalin will take over for fatigue at this point. My best 9 only get on the field.

I agree, don’t sit Posey this series. He’s a dangerous bat and the G’s need all of those they can get.

Great win last night! They did exactly what they needed to do in winning the first game. I watched the highlights of Cain’s outing, and it looked like he had his dominant stuff. Everything was darting and diving. When he’s on, he’s as good as anyone. Nothing he throws goes straight.

Dirty needs his third straight good start to keep it going. GO DIRTY! GO GIANTS!!!

Steve Henson, writing for Yahoo Sports, noted that the Padres are checking their rear-view mirror. The objects that they see are not just bigger than they seem. They are Giants. Buster Posey is the coverboy on Yahoo Baseball today, highlighting last night’s power barrage. Since when were the Giants ever associated with power? Since the days of a guy who wore #25 and whose initials are B.L.B.

Bochy will have a talk with his catcher. He’ll ask a couple questions, sound him out and watch for subtle nuances. Unless he picks up a pretty definite message, his game-caller and cleanup hitter plays tonight. Giants lineup looked intimidating last night, despite hitting into 3 DPs. A double, a triple and four ding-dong dingers will do that. Only guy not in double figures for HRs in that LU has a pair over the last 3 games, the Runt does.

It probably comes down to the hitters, cause that couple of lefties on the mound tonight make for one nasty matchup. Richard has dominated SF, SO FAR this season. He has not faced the current LU, however. No doubt he will use every bit of gas left in that portside arm, cause he’s facing a loogie who has been hotter than a three dollar pistol on Saturday night the last couple outings, a guy who no-hit these Padres last season. The pitcher for the Giants has earned the nickname Drrrrty. Only argument seems to be the number of “R”s in Drrrrrrty.

Classic matchup tonight. Yesterday’s losing pitcher may have summed it up in a postgame interview. He said the Giants looked hungry. It’s the tenth of September. They are one game out. Their destiny is in the hands of one ripped lineup and a nasty lefthander. May they dine in style.

Well, with the fact that Posey took a beating behind the plate, he hand one out on the homer. With that said, how many years do the Giants let him catch. Taking a beating like last night and over the course of years behind the plate will start to affect his hitting. A players legs are so important for hitting and running. I give them 3 years before they think about a perm position at 1st base.

Dennis…”Concussion are Overrated”…I Doubt Mike Matheny would agree with you.

It’s easy to forget how beat up these these guys get over the course of a career.Watching Buster Posey take a foul balls off his mask every night..like every other catcher gives me the hee-bee-jee-bees.He’s a sublimely graceful ballplayer and seems to do everything well and with such apparent ease,it would be a shame if catching took it’s toll on him like it did Matheny.A good hitting catcher like Joe Torre extended his career by playing both 1st and 3rd something Posey could do effortlessly.Nothing to do with the 2010 pennant race of course, but something to think about for the future.

I think Posey should have been pulled in the 7th last night. The game was pretty much in hand at that point.

I’m starting to think its going to be both Giants and Rockies in the playoffs, with the Braves missing out. Atlanta has this weekend series with StL as well as 6 with the Phillies.

Let’s go back to the loss in April when Jason Werth’s bases-loaded, two-out, opposite-field, 9th-inning dunker hit the rightfield chalk line. A 4-1, 9-inning win, became a 7-6 11-inning loss. Win that game and the Giants, Phils and Braves are all tied at 80-61. The Padres are percentage points ahead at 79-60, the Reds are half game back of the four tied teams, and the Dodgers still suck. What a ride this season has been.

    • 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on September 10, 2010 at 10:44 am

Even though the loss against the Phillies was chaep, at least it was within the parameters and rules of the game. That shit happens. Cuzzi’s blown call against the Mets and then ridiculous explanation about it afterwords hurts so much more. That’s a game the Giants did win, but didn’t get any credit for it. We’d be tied for the division and wild card right now.

Oh, and don’t look now, but Cuzzi is behind the plate for Timmy on Sunday.

It is hard to see how management could keep Posey behind the dish if he continues to rake in The Show. What has this club been missing forever? A plus bat at 3rd. Who knows how well Posey could play either of the corner infield spots but maybe he plays 3rd better than Sandoval. Move Sandoval to 1st and Posey to 3rd and sign someone like Ramon Hernandez to catch on a 2 year deal. Then maybe Joseph or Sanchez come up from the farm in a couple years..

Even before the last couple starts Sanchez had shown significant improvement-as he has every year. There was never any justification for the heat he took from some.
As to sitting Posey, I don’t know what kind of tests, if any, are available to show possible damage that could manifest itself later. Not many people know that umpire Cal Drummond died from the effects of a foul tip:

“During a June 10, 1969, game in Baltimore, Drummond seemed unhurt after being struck on the mask by a foul tip. The incident and even the batter’s identity had been forgotten by game’s end, when Drummond lapsed into unconsciousness. Released after a week’s hospitalization, he began the slow path to recovery and resumed umpiring the next spring.
But on the final day of a minor league rehabilitation stint, Drummond collapsed and died. An autopsy attributed his death to the effects of the foul tip, making him the only on-field participant since Chapman to have sustained a fatal injury during a major league game. As with so many athletes until recent medical revelations into brain injuries’ hidden toll, the delayed and mystifying course of the injury has left Drummond all but forgotten. ”
No, dear fools, this is not “Buster Hate”, I’m just urging that whatever precautions or tests might be available, do it. And if sitting him for an evening seems prudent, by all means he should sit.

Thus shortening even further the life expectancy of the players . . .

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on September 10, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Yeah I read that. Didn’t they partly try to justify it by having only a 2 game pre-season?

      • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on September 10, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Well, the last 2 preseason games are VERY sparse for the starters.

The point being, make those games meaningful, and it’s 130 more plays per season that these guys smack into eachother.

Back in the 60’s there were 6 preseason games. There were 6 mainly for the players to get themselves back into game shape. As these athletes trained longer and longer (and didn’t need outside jobs), the reason for that many preseason games changed. So, they went from 6-14 to 4-16.

Cue to now, and these guys are scary fast and very large. Like Harris Barton said years ago, playing in a football game is like getting into 65 car accidents over the space of 3 hours.

If the owners had ANY kind of sympathy toward the players, they’d simply cut 2 preseason games off the schedule, and leave it at that. But there is no way in the wide wide world of sports that’ll ever happen. The owners would NEVER give away even one meaningless preseason game (at full price of course) in the name of player safety.

When Sanchez is throwing like this (slow and wild) he can go literally 5 minutes between strikes.

Definitely put the balls in the humidor tonight. That ball Rent just hit was long gone last night.

Always appreciate the opposition making an out on the only strike Sanchez throws out of the first 7 pitches!

  68. max808's avatar max808 said, on September 10, 2010 at 8:30 pm

Frustrating. They aren’t doing shit when he throws it over the plate.

Jesus only a guy like Dirrty can walk 7 in 5 innings and still keep them scoreless.

I’d rather see Sanchez keep going but SF has got to beat SD at their game tonight. Eek out a run and take this.

    • TellItGoodbye's avatar TellItGoodbye said, on September 10, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I don’t know how much eeking they’re going to do. Don’t know if Darren Ford can bunt, but Bochy says we won’t see him batting anyway, which is understandable.

No video feed here tonight. Relying on Yahoo. Slow. His pitch count through five wasn’t particularly high, so what was the reasoning of PHing Rowand!? for Sanchez?

  75. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on September 10, 2010 at 8:41 pm

Better eke one before they eck one…
