A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

A “Virtual Tie”

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 11, 2010

I have no idea how you guys decided to make THAT the thing to perseverate on at the end of the last thread. First place? Not first place? I didn’t think about that for a second after we won last night. I’m not even thinking about it if we sweep these chumps this weekend. Where they are in the standings at this point only has to do with leverage. And after the first two games I say that we have that, without question. We are % points behind, everyone can see that. But we have the psychological edge on the Padres AND we have assured ourselves of not losing any ground from where we were on Wednesday. As I’ve been highlighting for weeks now, the Padres are about to hit the road for 10 straight games with exactly one day of rest left in the entire month of September. Latos and Richard can’t pitch every game. They are DONE. If we had lost 3 or 4 we would be sucking wind and they’d have the leverage on us from here on out. But they didn’t do that. I’ll take a win this weekend, two would be divine, but we are all good from here on out. We won the division last night with that victory. Book it……

Huff is playing like a thirsty man in the desert. Coming out of the wastelands for his first taste of meaningfull games in September. He willed that run into creation and led this club to victory last night.

Second place, first place, tied for first, percentage points behind. Who cares? Top shelf, ML baseballl from both clubs. All the way around. Huff sucking it up and stealing a bag, Schierholtz with the aggressive slide, Uribe with the hustle, starting pitching, BP and of course The Beard of Zues. The whole team could be POTG.

    What a game!

Total agreement Flav…just a question now if the Rockies overtake the Padres and Braves for wild card…

well, I admit, the Rockies are a little scary. Normally, I would say this is just a lucky run but they seem to do this every year, for some reason. But as far as San Diego goes, they are DONE–

Casilla is quite an amazing story 2010. Don’t know how it’s happened, but this guy is way different from last few years, when league hit .300 against him and his WHIP was 1.78. This year batter avg. is down to .219, K’s are up and BBs are down. We all know how wild he can be, but just like a RH Sanchez he has electric fastball and killer breaking ball to go with it.

Leaving San Jose yesterday for the gym I was behind a car with license plate of “Rice Owls”…..whom I remember as perennial doormat for old Southwest Conference football, a funky looking mascot in blue and white owl suit, and a helmet that resembled the old Eagles with the white wings.
But also, home of one of my fav players from NBA, Ricky Pierce, who was 6th man of the year for Nelson in Milwaukee. Cool player, pure scorer, excellent free throw shooter (75 in a row once) and off season workout buddy of Terry Teagle, another Texas guy that could really shoot and score for Warriors. 1 on 1 games would have been something to watch btw those two.

Superb effort so far, but I hope the G’s aren’t feeling satisfied. Frankly, a split would suck now. They’ve got SD bloodied and dazed, time to finish them off. Go into the next 2 with the attitude that they are must wins. Colo is just 2.5 back and looking unbeatable at home. This is hardly the time to be popping the cork.

After getting dinked around all season by the Dagos, the Giants, with the crazymon baserunning of Aubrey Huff, finally went and dinked em right back after clouting them with their big clubs the night before. Padres are reeling. We’ll find out today whether the Friars are fried. I think you’re right, Flav, about the schedule becoming a daunting factor for SD. Giants win either of these two day games and that’s pretty much it for the Dagos. Giants have only one SP who could be said to be faltering ~ and not much so the other night ~ while the Pads have only two starters likely to maintain excellence.

Though we cannot lose sight of the two games left on this road trip and those three with SD at the beginning of October, there is also the factor of the Rox. Anyone know off hand what their home-road splits are for the rest of the season? Giants will play three in the box of Rox later in the month. Even the fading, faltering LaBumbos could be a bump in the road as the first two games at China Basin feature Kershaw vs. Zito and Billingsley facing Cain.

Twenty games remain. Giants are poised for great things right now, but they gotta take it one game at a time, starting against Stauffer in about 5 hours time. Stauff him and stauff him good.

Feeling very thankful for Posey’s return to the LU. Glad his bell wasn’t rung too loud. That kid is tough, smart and determined. Had he the ABs, he’d be right in the thick of the batting title race. His game calling keeps improving. Got to give Whitehead props, though, for throwing out that would-be base-stealer last night. He may be totally backup offensively, but does happen to be pretty decent behind the plate.

No Pablo today. Evidently, the bamboo groves are pretty picked over around north suburban Tijuana. Also, he’s probably still pretty freaked over the explosion and fire in San Bruno. Anybody know if the Sandoval home is still standing and habitable? I’m sure he’s anxious to get back to the Bay.

  28. EdGdsnInExile's avatar EdGdsnInExile said, on September 11, 2010 at 11:53 am

Dennis, none of us can know for sure what’s in Boche’s head, but I think one of the factors is having Edgar’s veteran craftiness (see that tag last night, and his working pitchers at the plate) and presence in the line-up, as well as Juan’s September stick. Just so happens that adds up to more than Pablo can offer. It’s September and normal equations add up differently. Then again, it might be just one game.

  29. snark's avatar snark said, on September 11, 2010 at 11:54 am

On Panda, it may be more of the defensive thing, especially today since there’s a righty going. Bochy knows these next two tilts could be low scoring, and Panda’s D has left something to be desired for a while. I said before the series he should start only 2 of 4, looks like that might happen…

    • snark's avatar snark said, on September 11, 2010 at 11:56 am

Besides, Uribe put in some really nice plays at 3rd last night where his cannon arm really helped. That pik of the high high bouncer and quick gun throw was awesome. Panda doesn’t make that play…

  30. alleykat's avatar alleykat said, on September 11, 2010 at 12:00 pm

All i’m saying Twin,is that all 2B make that play even with Nate barreling down on him.Eckstein throws like a girl, his rag arm was the difference on the play.He has to have the worse arm of all 2b in baseball.Hey i’m thankful he does.

    • snark's avatar snark said, on September 11, 2010 at 12:06 pm

Kat, I’ll give Nate credit on that DP breakup. God knows Nate gets/deserves not much credit these days. But, he did what he was supposed to do, and on the Giants, that’s a good thing. Maybe a stronger arm 2nd baseman gets it done, but the stronger armed ones may not be as acrobatic as Eckstein. Anyway, that play won the game…
