A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Losing With One Hand Tied Behind Your Back

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 12, 2010

I loved Baggs’ description of the strike zone yesterday: “more like a rectangle than a square”.  How could we expect to do anything at the plate when Crawford’s dumbass is calling pitches 6 inches (or more) off the plate? And today we get the ridiculous Cuzzi who went to the “How much effort are they putting into making the play” School of Umpiring.  Go google “Cuzzi blown call” and you’ll see there are countless fuck ups by this tool….

THe O/U is 5.5 for today’s game. I don’t know if I’ve seen one that low. And I think I’m taking the under……

8 percentage points out of first place. That sounds much worse than one game back…….

“Nice effort”

He can cover the CF, and he can go 0-4 just as well as Rohand. No fuckin way Rohand plays leadoff or is in the lineup the rest of this month. Go Timmy…

Pads are starting to implode. Looks like sweet vengeance. Dagos season threatens to go down the big swirly with Latos’ long-deserved bad outing. It may effect his Cy chances. Damn Rox came back and beat the Snakes. Anyone know if they have any road games coming up? They need some. Otherwise they are likely to beat out SD for second and may even make a move on the WC.

    • JBat's avatar JBat said, on September 12, 2010 at 3:36 pm

Colorado’s 10 game homestand ends on Wed, then they go on the road against the Snakes and Dogears. Not much of a challenge there. Then us and LA at home, then they finish with STL. I honestly think we have more to worry about with the Rox than the Pads. That three gamer in CO is going to be huge.

Flemm just ripped Rohand’s season performance up and down one side and then the other; BA, low walks, .285 OBP. Ouch. Indirectly, he’s making the case to play Ross. If Bonehead had any sense of taking a risk, he’s give Ford a try. No, he could NOT do worse than Rohand…

  22. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on September 12, 2010 at 3:38 pm

We know now, twelve days into September, which team is the contender and which the pretender. We also know which SP has won two consecutive Cys and which one is damned good, but not quite there yet.

Buster’s dinger was monstrous huge. It just about confirmed his ROY status. Hell, he may even get a couple well-deserved MVP votes. After all, the Giants are a much changed team since he took over duties behind the plate. Like winners, i mean.

  44. snark's avatar snark said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:08 pm

The team will miss Torres, but how much, I dunno. His D is always a big plus, but honestly, his offense has sucked the past few weeks — he’s around 7 for 50 or some such, and few walks, and I can’t remember a steal. The best replacements for D and offense are Ross and Ford. Rohand must continue on the pine. He looks clueless at the plate…

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:11 pm

this win was a surpise and it takes a little of the sting out of that teamwide niner embarrassment. That pathetic loss was on singletary who didn’t have the team ready to play….

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:13 pm

The worst loss of Singletary’s coaching career so far. All “good-will capital” is gone. He’s just another guy trying to win a game now.

  47. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Velez would probably get starts before Ford. But I could see it flanked by the Water Buffaloes. But they will miss Andres on offense as well. He’s hardly the only guy who has endured a slump this year. They all have.

  48. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:18 pm

“It just about confirmed his ROY status.”

I would think so, too, Stix; but Peter Gammons on KNBR the other morning kind of threw a wet blanket on that. He said that the national media still considers Heyward the favorite. And the schmucks will probably forget that Posey missed the first two months of the MLB season.
I’m guessing which teams make the playoffs will be a big factor, also.

  49. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:18 pm

if you play Ross in cf who leads off? Not happening. It’s gonna be rowand dudes, bochy will write Him into the LU and not think twice. I’d prefer ford or EV but I know we are going to be getting rowand….

  52. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Bochy is all “track record”. Rowand, at one time, was a passable leadoff hitter for a few months. That’s where boch will go. EV? His noggin and his crazy defense will keep boch from going that route. Ford? I can’t see bochy trying that but he should— give him the job before the league gets a book on him. He’d probably do fine for 10 days or so and would give us the defense and the true leadoff guy we need. Too bad EV has shuffled so far down the depth chart. I bet he led the team in POTG winners last year….

  54. snark's avatar snark said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:31 pm

I think Bonehead might try Ford, maybe Ross. Not Velez. He obviously has little faith in Rohand since he’s been riding pine for 2 months. I say play Ford until he fucks up. The guy has played AA outfield all season. He’s gotta be able to catch the ball. I’d rather see him hit grounders to 3rd and short than Rohand, because at least he’ll outrun a few for infield hits…

  55. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:32 pm

Man, what an awful play-call by Reid at the end of that Packer game. A short-yardage quarterback run from the SHOTGUN position.

  56. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:32 pm

Playing ford, without the league having a book on him, would be huge— and just the spark we need for this final push….

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:35 pm

At least one start seems reasonable. And see how he does.

    • snark's avatar snark said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Totally agree. Unfortunately, this is exactly the situation where Bonehead normally can’t bring himself to pull the trigger on a personnel move that is out of the ordinary. He’s comfortable playing a vet, even Rohand. I say he’s friggin afraid of something blowing up, rather settle for Rohand having a string of worthless 1 for 4 and 0 for 4 games than Ford maybe making a costly rookie defensive mistake. I say go for it…

  57. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Rowand will not be the regular. There’s nothing to support that opinion. Again, pay attention. There will be several combinations, based on match ups, ballparks, etc. Boiling the decision down to an either/or on just two guys is moronic.

  58. max808's avatar max808 said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:39 pm

7-3 after dropping the first game in LA. How big was Saturday’s come from behind win in LA?

  59. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Ford is more valuable off the bench. There really isn’t much reason for Bochy to deviate from starting the Water Buffaloes at the corners; Rowand/Ross in CF and replace late with defense, as he’s been doing. In any case, it’s clear that the Blockhead Way is the right way.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:53 pm

“the Blockhead Way is the right way.”

Starting Alex Smith, who sucks. The 49er season is already over before it began. Today’s loss = four. Might as well put 0-4 in the morning paper standings tomorrow, ’cause that’s where they’re headed.

Today was a complete and utter embarrassment. I’m ashamed to say I’m a 49er fan today.
      Ashamed.

  60. snark's avatar snark said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:50 pm

The Bonehead way is the no thinking, by the book, safe and clueless way. Ford hit .302 in AA after the All Star break, and he’s a total burner on the bases…

  61. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:52 pm

You have to consider who is going to leadoff— That leaves Rowand and Ford– and I’m not including EV because I don’t think he’s even in their plans with the head injury, not playing for a while, shitty defense and the fact that he’s never really been a very good leadoff hitter despite his speed.
I see Bochy giving Ford the first shot OR just handing the job back to Rowand– only because he’s got no one else to turn to when it comes to the leadoff position……..

  62. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on September 12, 2010 at 4:58 pm

I just checked the box score. Jesus H. Christ. Rowand went 0-5. His OBP is .284

BTW, if San Diego can’t show up for THIS game (33,800+), what game DO they show up for? Front-runners. Just like Braves fans. Yankees too. And about six other teams’ fans. Front-runners. (Tampax’s fans don’t even show up when they win.)

I’d just as soon see Schierholtz in RF as Guillen. The latter’s OPS puts him squarely in the Franchez pre-sabrmetrics hype zone. The fact that he bats in front of Burrell is up there with the Rowand as lead off phenomenon.

  70. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on September 12, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Ross’s career at bat #’s in the 1 hole: 21. I could see Bochy giving him a shot there just trying to do the same 1-off thing he did with Rowand a couple of years ago. But I’m not expecting it. He’ll go Ford for a game or 2 to see what happens or Rowand will be out there for a few games. If he’s his usual shit-self, then maybe he gives Ford a shot. I just don’t see who bats leadoff if Ross is in CF……

  71. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on September 12, 2010 at 5:46 pm

OK, now it’s coming clear– he’s going to start Ross in CF and put Franchez in the 1-hole. Freddy is getting on base and he’s got 336 at bats in the leadoff spot. That’s what Bochy will do……

  72. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 12, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Bochy’s shit self is why they’re even in the hunt. A wiild erratic pen that still ranks as one of the 2 or 3 best. Two OFers who can’t field their positions, massive slump from Panda, starting pitching that had a more than awful August, the slowest team in the game. Thank God he’s his old shit self.

  73. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on September 12, 2010 at 5:55 pm

I was talking about Rowand being his usual shit-self but I can see how you read it that way. I haven’t uttered more than a handful of criticisms of Bochy this year. I think he’s done a great job, I think he’s an underrated manager and I hope they bring him back next year. Totally serious…..

  74. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 12, 2010 at 6:08 pm

Sorry, it did look like you were referring to Bochy… the games these people play trying to put shit on Bochy can be done with every single manager in the game. Even a casual team blog search will show that the 60 dumbest fucks on the field are the 30 managers and the 30 third base coaches…

  75. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on September 12, 2010 at 6:32 pm

That could of and probably should have been a sweep. As Flav has been saying SD is done. Their playing with less confidence than Rowand. If that is even possible. Stick a fork in ’em. Theiy’re done.

Fuck the Rockies. SF has been hot too. Just not as many in a row. SF needs to just focus on winning. Not looking back…
