A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Aftermath

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 3, 2010

Yesterday was so much fun. The “small town” feel of this ride has sustained itself. I had people I didn’t know yelling “Go Giants!” and “World Series Champs, baby!” out of their car windows as they drove by me on the street. It seemed like 80% of the Bay Area, at least on the west side, had their Giants gear proudly on display….

I couldn’t help thinking a lot about Rod Beck yesterday. It’s just too bad he never got to experience this, even just as a former Giant alum. He had 199 saves for us but only got to pitch in one playoff game for the Giants. And if there was ever a guy who would have fit into this team, identified with the personality of the 2010 guys, it was Shooter…….

Everyone who *made it* to November 2nd, 2o1o and got to wake up to the brilliance of this accomplishment should take the time to appreciate it. So many great Giants and great Giants fans weren’t as fortunate…..

All right, so let’s start talkin’ some baseball. Who do we keep? Who gets let go? I imagine Huff and Ross get resigned, The Bat and Uribe don’t, Renteria retires and Aaron Rowand….uh…..just disappears. But we’ll see. Mark DeRosa’s flexibility WILL factor into what they do with the decisions related to the guys above…….

I know the Giants would love to have Uribe return but I think the cat is out of the bag on him and he’ll get a multi-year deal for more than Sabean is willing to pay…..

Enjoy the parade. Wish I could be there, which I will be in spirit. No doubt in my mind that it will be more shockingly emotional and overwhelming than anyone can imagine. Or just fun.

Woke early today. Lots to do…. I’m seeing Aubrey struggle from bed, untangling those long legs, groggily groping for the wall.. Andres BOLTING from his… Fruckie doing a spin to the dresser… uh-oh, Pat just missed his pant leg… the PARADE, they’re geting ready… like I said, I don’t like to inject politics and I like Newsom fine but it ought to be Willie Brown today…I did a stint as a bill collector some years ago, BTW, when Willie was a debt attorney for some real deadbeats- one of the best:
“Sue him, Fuck you. Bye Now”.. that was Willie…

Twin I agree about leaving the politics out but I do want to share a Willie Brown story. When he was first running for Mayor he came into Harrington’s Bar and Grill on Front street (the late Kathleen Harrington held many events for politicos there). Willie comes up to me to shake my hand and I tell him ‘You are the only one with enough mojo to get us a new ballpark, you’ll have my vote”. He smiled that grin of his and replied “Why? So you can walk to it from here?” and I said “Well, sure I’ll walk to it from here”. Well when he ran for the second term, he came back in to do the greet and shake hands thing and he again gets to me. I tell him “You got me my ballpark, like I said before, you’ve got my vote”. The dude looks at me and says (Have you walked to it from here yet?”. Maybe it was just a standard line but I was floored.

Thinking on possible moves: little doubt that they’ll decline Edgar’s option-but I don’t rule out a make good. A run at Alex Gonzales might be in the offing, there’s talk of Crawford. Wouldn’t he and Andres look pretty nice in center and left… Aaron? Maybe they can eat half and pick up a solid back up catcher.I’m also a bit intriqued with Buster at first, Panda behind the dish, Beltre at third… rooks making a bid for spots: Belt, Neal, Edlefson, perhaps Crawford depending on whether they move on Gonzales or trade for a Bartlett…Burriss should be there, Nate might be in trouble or be moved., Travis’ status will depend on Huff negotiations and Belt… Zits stays as the 5, I guess. Juan could be tough, I agree with Craig. His bargain days might be over right when a bargain deal might be as good as they should offer. But fuck that: they’ve got their rings, give the Cruel Swinger Fruckie $ for two years…

Willie would have been at Le Central when I arrived for my planned Cassoulet celebratory dinner after the 2002 parade.. the barkeep was a guy who liked to call himself “Stan the Man”.. he was a gambler, welched on all his bets with the customers, who seemed to expect it. Fuckwad stiffed me for TEN BUCKS once. Ten bucks. And called me a lowlife for asking for it…
Hell, today I even forgive The Man.. I am so looking forward to seeing Edgar hold his prize high…

I woke up this morning and as I’ve done many, many times, I read the posts on the Flap that I missed after going to bed. I read Ted’s post about the Splash (very good post by the way) and thought to myself this is the 2010 World Champs they’re talking shit about, and you know what? No Troll, no Soph no fuckwad, dunderhead piece of crap can take that away from this team or it’s fans, EVER. I know I’m weirdo and have known it for years, but some of those folks are completely whacked. I’ll bet the guy that plays soph really does have some teddy bears that he strangles or whatever. Unfucking believable.

A stat from an SI article.

Lincecum went 9-2 after Sept. 1, including four wins in the postseason in which he beat Derek Lowe, Roy Halladay and Lee twice. And talk about being strong to the finish. Lincecum tied a record for most strikeouts in a World Series-clinching win. With 10 punchouts he joined the company of Bob Gibson (1967), Sandy Koufax (1965), Hal Newhouser (1945) and Orval Overall (1908).

To be in the company of Gibson and Koufax, I don’t know the other two, but I remember Gibson and Koufax!!

Report from the front. I just walked down (up) Battery Street. They’ve cordoned off Washington Street. East of Battery towards Front there are motorized cable cars (cheesy) with large Giants banners (glittered. Go figure) West of Battery (towards Sansome), a fleet of cool vintage autos. All convertibles of course. Listened to the band warming up. Didn’t see any Giants but the cars all had signs in the reat seats with the names of who will be riding in them. There was even a big black car with the sign Magowan Family. That was nice of the Giants

  13. Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on November 3, 2010 at 9:14 am

I hope they sign Cody and the Huffster those guys were just a complete delight to watch. Pat was originally signed as a pinch hitter off the bench do they try that for one more year?
Panda could become a huge consideration for signings. It’s not just his bat but what position to play him. If you move him to first are we better with Huff in left and DeRosa at third?
SS, I don’t have a clue at what direction they’ll take. I would imagine that if Rent retires he’s given one of those adviser positions.
Will/can you trade Rowand to a Midwest team with a bandbox?
Ishi and Nate are out of options, who stays who goes?
Next year has a lot of question marks (just like this year did). I think the difference next year would be, this year we wanted to get to the playoffs and see what we could do, next year we want to repeat.
    Whatever, it should be fun.

Cody is theirs if they want him, I think. Arb eligible, I have little doubt he’ll be back in RF… I think they’ll get it done with Aubrey, the goodwill aspect is worth millions alone. Rent’s HR made about a kazillion dollars vanish into the autumn air.. a bill just landed by my back door. I’ll light tonight’s fire with it…

I can’t really recommend this story from the NYT in its entirety because the writer spends far too much space likening Lincecum to Orel H. Might as well try to find the similarities between Johnny Cash and Pat Boone. But the heart of the story, quoted below, gets at the heart of the season. When Lincecum and Zito both went into horrible slumps in August, one of them emerged and carried the team. Every fuckwad who insulted Timmy during that month really should be at the parade today, cheering him now.

Lincecum has had the changeup for years. The slider — he called it his go-to pitch in Game 5 — he developed late this summer, after an alarming August in which he went 0-5 with a 7.82 earned run average.

No Giant in 18 years had gone 0-5 or worse in a month, with an E.R.A. that high. Lincecum tried adjusting his mechanics, the bedrock of his greatness, and spoke often by phone with his father. As the Giants scrambled to catch the National League West-leading San Diego Padres, Lincecum’s woes held them back.

“It was like a major crisis, and for good reason,” Righetti said. “The 49ers weren’t playing yet, we were in the middle of the season, trying to make it, and our best guy, supposedly, was going through his struggles. It was a major story.”

Righetti continued: “It’s not easy. He’s a young guy with a lot on his shoulders. For him to regroup like he did was tremendous. Tremendous fortitude. That’s what you’re most proud of. The outcome, sometimes, we can’t control. But how he went about it the last two months, I’m obviously very proud of him.”

Lincecum credited a new workout, focused more on his legs and core muscles, with smoothing his mechanics and invigorating his preparation.

“After that,” he said, “it became more of just what I wanted to throw as opposed to how I was going to throw it.”

It also kept him strong down the stretch, with a 9-2 record and a 2.17 E.R.A. from Sept. 1 through the end of the World Series. Over 78 2/3 innings, Lincecum had 95 strikeouts and 17 walks, and opponents hit .188 against him.

bullshit. The way he pulled himself out of it, developing the very pitch that beat the Rangers the other night, shows that he deserved nothing but support while he was fighting through the rough patch. Brickbats under circumstances like that come from fuckwad couch coaches. Some have the sense to revise their bullshit in light of later information. Some don’t.

Has J.Sanchez peaked? I think his PS performance was not as bad as some. Combined with his effort down the stretch he was nails. With DeRosa coming back would Sabean consider moving him in combination with Franchez now that SF got a ring?

Out side of the PS and Posey I see it as wide open.

I think the Giants know pitching, an understatement. It will be interesting to see how they handle these guys, but unless you have a sure winner in the wings, why touch this starting four? Who cares what order they end up in, but I’m guessing next year we will get a lot more respect. these guys are all still young for pitchers, but can you imagine how hot they will be over the next five years? I am not surprised if Bum doesn’t end up leading the group.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on November 3, 2010 at 10:41 am

If by that you mean the Giants wouldn’t have gotten to the World Series without him, absolutely. But his actual contribution to *winning* the World Series was more of an intangible. Camaraderie building, maybe, as in bringing the team to think as one, getting the benches to clear while Affeldt warmed up, sure. I can buy into that sort of thing.
But his actual pitching in game 3…well…

  23. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on November 3, 2010 at 10:21 am

I’m going to watch the parade on TV. I gave a thought to going to it, but I think going to it sounded better in theory than actually doing it. Hundreds of thousands of people descending on the parade route. Ralph on KNBR yesterday telling parents to take their kids out of school for the day. I could visualize being stuck blocks and blocks from the parade route, without being able to get closer. The CSN coverage will suffice for me.
It will be an amazing day. The emotion will flow for everyone, and rightly so.

It’s just possible that Sandoval’s intrigue trade value might eclipse his potential for reverting to form as Kung Fu Panda. Sabean should be open to offers. As for keeping him, how does he rate as a catcher? How does he compare with the average ML catcher for calling pitches, blocking bad throws and firing to second? At third i see him as adequate +.

Team’s primary need is a slick fielding SS with good range and not an embarrassment at the plate. Speed would be a highly desirable bonus. DeRosa’s return complicates things a bit. Most likely he would fill the expected super-sub, utility role originally envisioned for Uribe. If some team does not sweep him off his feet with a huge 3-year offer, the Juan and only would anchor 3B.

Secondary need is for a better than adequate backup catcher. That’s not an extremely rare commodity. If the Giants do not see Sandoval moving back behind the plate, those potential offers could be tempting ~ particularly if some riverboat gambler of a GM could see his way to springing for a package of Pablo and Rowand.

Most likely to make the team outta ST are Brandon Belt and Steve Edlefsen. Thomas Neal may be ready by mid-season or so. Sparkling 2B Charlie Culberson goes from SJ to Richmond, most likely, but probably is a year away. Francisco Peguero in the OF may have a roughly similar trajectory. Dan Runzler is another to watch.

Sabean holds the bull-hand going into the offseason. He would have to be totally swept off his feet to trade any element of the Rotation. He may get offers for Runzler, Wheeler and a couple other young pitchers. Except for nailing down that young, talented SS, Brian can hold a pat hand and let the others come to him. I like that position.

  26. alex's avatar alex said, on November 3, 2010 at 10:57 am

Uribe will be the first one signed. I think if we learned much from Bochy, it is that he knows value. Uribe is due a big payday but he ought to be the first one signed. I guess some fans will only measure these guys value by their October, but I know Bochy and Sabean will not be so short sighted.

Good to see Omar Vizquel sign for another year and only about 201 hits away from his HOF ticket with 3,000 hits. Couldn’t happen to a better player and man.

Max: Yes i did see something about Runzler being groomed to start. With the Zito contract hanging like an albatross, though, my thought is that this is a matter of showcasing the kid. Giants have ultimate respect right now as an organization that develops primo pitchers.

Dan could easily become part of a semi-blockbuster package-deal trade to some team with a good player or two the Giants could use to firm up the Dynasty. Picture what they could get for a package of the young loogie along with Pablo and Row-Row or maybe Nate: Perhaps a quality SS and a speedy OF a year or two further along than Neal or Peguero.

Worrell and Nen lost the World Series far more than Felix did… I talked to Craig a bit about Edgar yeterday: his rep was LAZY, nonchalant, doesn’t give a shit, as Snarkk said: delighted to steal their money… it really hasn’t changed all that much since the first Latins… The bubbly light skinned fuck Fruckie is smart, Edgar is, uh, dim….
Now he’ll get ome of the respect he deserved all along but the faces here will be as they are most places: the scrubbed, young, white ones… frankly, Buster is extremely annoying. The kid should just shut up and defer to the men who spent years striving for this. Ross as well.

One person in the organization hasn’t been mentioned (unless I missed it), Dick Tedrow. He has been Sabean’s “right hand man” directing the scouting department.

Before Posey, the Giants hadn’t drafted and developed a position player of note in 20 years. Counting him and Lincecum, Bumgarner, Matt Cain (first round in 2002) and Jonathan Sanchez (a 27th-round gem of a find in 2004 by scout Sean O’Connor), plus relievers Brian Wilson and Sergio Romo, the Giants’ homegrown talent is among the major leagues’ best.

San Francisco Giants fans everywhere can extend an index finger high in the air and know for the first time it’s not just an opinion. THE GIANTS ARE #1 . . . FACT.

What a day… you know, “The Troll” actually ragged on me for imagining the fellas as they rose to greet their big day. Unbelievable…
Today IS a day for men like me-and all of you- those who know that baseball is not just a game and not just an event or a show or a way to spend 3 hours. It’s for those who embrace the spirit and not the body.

A couple comments on paid for space in todays Sporting Green. I rarely give the Oakland A’s a 2nd thought. But they bought a full page ad today congratulating the Giants. A nice gesture. And Comast had a funny one. It starts:
To the Giants fans who said they would give up their right arm…their first born…or who knows what else…
    TIME TO PAY UP

A guy named “the Bronx” on the Splash says he’s waited since ’44… good poster, check him out.. great line from Miller: “Welcome to Torres’ wife’s birthday party”….

    • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on November 3, 2010 at 3:08 pm

That was a great line from Miller (and very cool of Andres to do it). I kept thinking if that’s how he throws a birthday party, I would have loved to be at the wedding.

Many WS championships just seem like so much sprayed and guzzled fine champagne, almost perfunctory. Not this one. No city has ever or will ever deserve this more.

I doubt that some things have changed: I have a suspician that this child fever outbreak was anticipated by the authorities at school 😉
My 1960 Games 1 and 7 illnesses were not attended to with great vigor by the nurses… they seemed confident that the excruciating and deadly pain would subside. Dr. House was not consulted…
