The Parade

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 4, 2010

Dems was some good vibes floatin’ around SF yesterday, right? I watched it three times (the speeches). At first, I thought Wilson’s was a little underwhelming but any reference that dude makes to “The Machine” has me doin’ some good ol’ fashioned “LQTM”. The stuff Wilson says seems so rehearsed but maybe that’s just his personality. Either way, he’s got a rockstar voice. Speaking of “rockstars”, Timmy has become one……

Posey’s speech and emphatic smack of the podium at the end had me thinking he’s going to be named team captain coming out of Spring Training next year…..

Krukow had the best *moment*…….

And Aubrey Huff is just freaking hilarious…….

My only wish is that Burrell had replaced Franchez and preceded Huff at the podium. Those dudes have been linked together since college, no reason to break up their fellowship now………

Well, I made it down for the parade, and I’m glad I went. I got to the Civic Center around 9:30 and there were thousands there already. Much of Market St was cordoned off, and I just milled around taking photos and checking out the really festive atmosphere.

There was some confusion as to exactly where the parade route was going to come off Market and head towards the Civic Center, so when I finally found out, I couldn’t get close enough to get any real good shots of the players, which sucked. It ended up being McAllister St, and the map provided by the city wasn’t real clear on that. But I did see most of them. I love how Andres and BW came down of the vehicles and interacted with the crowd right on the street. BW was funny as hell.

All in all, a rowdy, raucous and festive atmostphere, and I’ve never whiffed so much weed in one area in my whole life, and I’ve been to a couple of hundred concerts. 😀 Giants fans of all ages, shapes and sizes everywhere having a ball. A few crazy bastards climbed up a fire escape and made it to the top of a building (right at Market & McAllister), much to the delight of the crowd. One guy had this Giants-themed Batman cowl on, with a Giants flag as a cape, and he was funny as hell. Mucho characters everywhere.

I’ll get some shots up as soon as I have a chance to go through them.

We all hope for many more but this one will be as your first kiss, never to be replicated, never as sweet…
But so it does go on and it must be asked, we must be vigilant and cynical and ready to dismiss these fuckwad over achieving neer-do-wellls: CAN THEY DO IT AGAIN? Did Sabean get just lucky? Will Bruce Botch the ball in 2011? Will Tim’s arm be limp, Panda the Blimp? Madison bulging with hickory smoke? Dirty cowered and meek? Buster smug and plump?
    Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh…
Haven’t seen much about this reputed plan for Runzler as a starter. Certainly it would mean Zito ( how could they move him?) or more likely Dirty, goes in trade. SS is the upgrade position de jour, Dirty is giving up too much for the Bartletts of this world… it will bear watching…
    Other names:
1B LaRoche, DBacks didn’t pick up his option. Huff in left, Adam at first? Hmmmmmmmmmmm..
SS Infante ( Braves have option)
3B Beltre, flyer on ML deal for Chavez or Atkins?
C Barajas, Blanco, Buck, Ramon Hernandez: big crop of FA here
OF Crawford, Cuddyer, Hawpe, Bill Hall, Podsednik, Nady, Werth
Don’t see them doing anything in the pitcher’s market…
I like Ramon Hernandez to back up Buster, I’ve warmed to LaRoche, and with that addition let Burriss/Crawford/Ehire try to win the SS job…. take the flyer on Atkins or Chavez as Panda insurance….
All thoughts subject to violent change…

Also, Tidrow is still working with the D-Train in Fresno. Although I’d prefer to keep Dirty, would he be enough to get Hanley Ramirez? Otherwise I’d say keep him and watch him continue to grow.

With Werth probably leaving Philly, I’ve seen a couple of speculations on the Phils wanting Rowand back.

      Hot stove season begins.

Duane Kuiper made me cry today – he was talking about the guys going back to the park after the parade, and taking the ‘hockey’ picture, everyone on the mound with the trophy. He said that this was the last time they would all be together like this, as not everyone would be back next year… Sort of put the final period on the season for me. What an incredible ride, an unbelievable finish, and an unforgettable team. No superstars, but all champions!!!

All my life, the aftermath of the last pitch of the WS, for me, signaled gray winter, a page turned, autumn over. While that may be true meteorologically in these parts (rain today; snow showers a-coming), it is not true — for me — spiritually.

    Let the sunshine in.

It is still golden and lambent and radiant.

    It shimmers inside and out.

    And will.

We [yes, we] are the Champions of the World!

[I’m not even a fan of Queen and don’t even know the words, but I go around the house or in the car, blurting that out. And will anytime the urge seizes me.

JBs…ever make any Warrior games down the ramp at halftime?

All the stories from media about weed in ATT and SF crack me up. Like who really gives a fuck? I can remember going to day game mid-80s (talk about torture jonny rabb days) and passing one along a row of seats with my partners, and a kid sitting close by couldn’t have been more than 10 says loudly to his mom, “Hey I smell weed…” and I thought, how the fuck would you know?

Nice to hear from those who went, special exp I’m sure. Just as nice for the players too, to feel support from everyone. Giants fans are special group, knowledgeable and passionate. Just like here.

I haven’t been to a Warriors game in years in Oakland, though I did see them in Seattle before the Sonics left. I’m all cool with the weed, it’s just funny how brazen everyone was being, passing doobies around right in the open. LOT’S of alcohol consumption going on too. You are right, Willied, probably the best thing about going was being able to experience the passion of other Giants fans up close and personal. I miss that living away from the City.

Funny too about Candlestick, I remember going to a game with a buddy around 1976-7, and a couple of guys sitting a few rows in front of us were passing a joint like it was the most natural thing in the world. And this with about 5,000 fans in attendance. Only in SF, baby, only in SF.

We’re all gonna be riding this high for awhile ~ even those of us hundreds or even thousands of miles away from that fine, herbal scent of The City on a glorious, sunny day in early November and the sight of a team full of characters representing a burg that more than any other cherishes and respects character; which usually expresses itself by acting out an inner-directed role as a character.

The hard part will be the departures of several of those who helped to bring the first ever World Championship to the San Francisco Giants. But the game must go on and the future belongs to those who prepare for tomorrow rather than riding and resting on past laurels. With that 6-player core of 4 starters, the closer and the ROY behind the plate, SF has a solid foundation for continued dominance well into the future ~ should Sabean play his cards right. With Four Aces up his sleeve, Brian holds the bull hand and does not have to play the role of the riverboat gambler to continue the roll.

Giants will get offers. Only the very best may get serious consideration. When you are the World Champs every would-be contender out there wants a piece of the action. The team did not have to overpay to acquire their in-season add-ons. We now know that the much derided contracts to Franchez and RentMan were worth every dollar.

With the immanent arrival of Brandon Belt and his ultimate placement somewhere around the middle of the order, the Giants needs have been primarily reduced to a top-grade shortstop and a backup catcher ~ and maybe, just maybe a steady and reliable RH set-up man. That’s not a daunting climb to repeat as Divisional champs, probably winning another NL Pennant and ~ if the Baseball Gods still smile ~ a consecutive World Championship.

I must make a rather pathetic confession. I have been stuck in a permanent cringe since the rather hideous moment the San Francisco Giants won the World Series.

Everyone expects us Angelenos to be such good sports about it, and, OK, fine, congrats, Giants, good job, blah, blah, blah. But, c’mon. We’re only human. Watching them dance around in their shoe-polish beards and whoa-dude grins made me want to make like Reggie Smith.

Worrell and Nen lost the World Series far more than Felix did… I talked to Craig a bit about Edgar yeterday: his rep was LAZY, nonchalant, doesn’t give a shit, as Snarkk said: delighted to steal their money… it really hasn’t changed all that much since the first Latins… The bubbly light skinned fuck Fruckie is smart, Edgar is, uh, dim….
Now he’ll get ome of the respect he deserved all along but the faces here will be as they are most places: the scrubbed, young, white ones… frankly, Buster is extremely annoying. The kid should just shut up and defer to the men who spent years striving for this. Ross as well.
    End of rant…”

Twin I just read this quote from yesterday, and I have to respond. It’s just pure crap, at least for me. Whatever criticisms I leveled at Sanchy had nothing to do with the color of his skin, and everything to do with his maddening inconsistency on the mound up to that point. No one is happier that he turned it around than me, and the fact that he became a stalwart of the staff down the stretch is a testament to his talent and competiveness. I cheered hard for the guy everytime he started and happily give him credit for all he did for this team. Seeing him start to reach his full potential was fantastic. He is still inconsistent, but the sky is the limit for him, as it is for all of the Giants fine young starters.

To come here and basically cry racism in this situation is both insulting and stupid. All of this said from MY point of view, not anyone elses.

Jonathan Sanchez is a head case, not because he’s Latin American, but because he’s a fucking head case. Most important, he seems to be dealing with it. He has matured in the past couple of years and his pitching has improved steadily (he used to stubbornly throw 29 FBs in a row when he had trouble locating the ball–he’s put that sort of bs way behind him). His rash public comments aren’t really all that extreme. He just has trouble consistently getting both his arm and his head into their proper “slots” at the same time when he starts. When he’s on, he’s fantastic; when he’s not, he’s barely ok. I expect him to continue to work his ass off physically and mentally, because I think he knows how far he still has to go. I hope the Giants don’t trade him this winter. (Now Zito, . . . adios amigo!)

    • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on November 4, 2010 at 12:10 pm

And you would have no need to respond if it were not true of you. I read the crap you posted about Sanchez and the fact is that the white boys got slack for the same “maddening inconsistency” you ascribe to Sanchez only. And as I said-it goes farther back to the outrageous slander that Felix has suffered while Worrell and Nen skate. Anyone who can deny that the Latins, particularly those who speak English poorly and/or are of dark skin are not still suffering bias and prejudice is a motherfucking liar . Wear it if it fits.. I was kind to you after your insulting E-Mail to me-no more. I speak truth, face it like a man…

The division between the amateur draft in the US (and Canada) and the recruiting and signing that goes on in Latin America fosters a bunch of speculation that, generally, is tinged with racism. The “birth certificate” joke we hear over and over again now is a classic example. People are ignorant about what goes on Latin America. In fact, of course, Latin American baseball has an incredibly sophisticated side. Kuiper talks with delight about his time in the Venezuelan league, and that was 3 or 4 decades ago. I know a guy (white guy, drafted by the Cardinals out of college) whose time in the Venezuelan league in the 80s was right up there with getting called to ST as a high point in his career. In a way, the Latin American baseball world is in a parallel universe not all the different from the Negro Leagues, so long ago . . . . There must be some good books about the Latin American system. Finding some is on my (very long) list of things to do one of these days.

Sanchez, btw, came to the US to play at a junior college. Giants drafted him out of that college.

When is a ballplayer a “head case”? Is there some discernible, measurable gap between talent and performance that defines it? What separates a head case from someone who is for other reasons inconsistent or mediocre? Does the fact that Moreland smoked only a single off of Bum while getting lift on the same pitch from Sanchez mean that the latter is a head case?

Steves Blass and Sax were head cases — J Sanchez is not.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on November 4, 2010 at 1:32 pm

I base my conclusion on a bunch of factors. I’ve watched Sanchez pretty closely for several years. As I said, I think he’s dealing with his emotional turbulence. In any event, the term “head case” is subjective. Wtf knows what it really means. Steve Sax was extreme. Hell, Zito in his own way is pretty extreme. Fucking Italians. . . .

      • James's avatar James said, on November 4, 2010 at 1:48 pm

Just for fun, I looked up the stats for one of the ultimate head cases, a hall of fame pitcher with a 2-1 K to BB ratio. That stat wouldn’t be so damning, if said pitcher didn’t hold the record for most Ks in a career. Nolan never could get all that emotional turbulence under control.

I do know that Jon let his “emotions” get to him at times. and for most of the season he did not let his emotions get to him this year. the Philly game was one where his emotions ran away from him, but with that said he pitched just fine through out the playoffs.

I think JSanchez is a head case, by my definition. I’ve seen a lot talented people deal with stress, challenge and failure in very highly competitive situations — in sports and elsewhere. I’ve been through it, too. I’ve developed my own views and opinions. I apply them to what I see. And believe me I look carefully. I’m also always open to other views. Unless you think Steve Sax was not a head case. In that event, stfu. 😉

Dirty was vilified beyond all reason for the sin of having a couple substandard outings. Without the grace of 11 runs, the annointed one was no better in his initial contest in the WS. Again, the fact remains that Headcase won them into the postseason more than any other starter. The alleged “maddening inconsistency” is indeed code….

In the last two months of the season Sanchez was fantastic. He had a few rough games (especially in August), but averaged nearly 6 IP per start and had a minuscule WHIP in each month. He also had some great games during that stretch run (in the last month, in particular). Nobody with any sense would discount his contribution to the division title. Back in July, things got a bit rocky. But obviously he wasn’t the only pitcher who hit rough spots.

What about that confrontation with Utley? Big deal, or not? He was probably coming out, anyway. But a big league pitcher, after hitting the batter with a pitch, has to be cooler than that (unless you’re Clemens revved on roids; then some would say, hey, no big deal, it’s the Rocket.) As I said earlier, I get the sense that Sanchez knows what he needs to do to continue improving.

Unfortunately, didn’t make the parade yesterday. Went to the BART, there were two lines each over a 1/4 mile long and 4-5 deep just to get the tix. After the line moved 10 feet in about 15 minutes, the Snarkettes were in no mood to wait two+ hours just to get tix and on the platform. By the time we’d get there, we’d miss the parade. Anyhoo, I taped the parade. Great stuff. Even better than I could have imagined. Hopefully, not 52 years until the next one. Congrats to all the Giants, what a great team in the truest sense, a bunch of characters that will be remembered a long, long time. We won’t see such a time again. But, onward and upward to next year.

Now that the season’s done in such great fashion, I’m bouncing from the Flap for a while. Be back now and again, but mostly not until ST rolls around. I guess these last few weeks guarantee Boch and Sabes will be around for a while. Well, they certainly deserve it. What a ride. Thanks for your efforts, BF, great job!

    See ya, Go Giants!!!…

Comments about Jonathan have not been read very carefully if it can be said that there was agreement on his great contributions. That is simply untrue. He was actually vilified after leaving a game with a 4 run lead that the pen would later surrender. This is the pitcher who was harder to hit than any in baseball save perhaps one or two. In the WS game, he made ONE bad pitch (that Buster called) or they sweep… has he ever lost his cool a little? Has Tim? How many dumb fuck needless braindead headcase bases did Tim give up because he ignored base runners? Would Dirty have HAD to win that last Sunday if some other guys had come through earlier? Was there a bigger game than the gem he threw at Atlanta? Sanchez is a fucking hero, as much as any guy on the team and more than most…

I tell ya, the time the RJ spent on the team last year seemed to make a world of difference to Drrrty. His confidence went way up, and his control issues went down as well.

Still think they oughta try to get RJ on the team’s payroll. Maybe they’ve tried, but who knows?

Dudes need to get called out when they get all defensive when someone points out the double standard that people with accents or different skin color get held to. Calling out racism doesn’t detract from the Giant lovefest going on right now, it DEFENDS it.

    • ferrethead's avatar ferrethead said, on November 4, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Ted, my friend told me that – I was guessing she heard it on the Fox broadcast. A few years ago there was a story in SI about how almost no African-Americans were playing baseball anymore. I guess it’s easier to play basketball, especially if you’re thinking that sports will be your ticket out, kids getting drafted right out of high school, etc.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on November 4, 2010 at 4:23 pm

I forgot where I heard/read it. In truth, though, I didn’t and don’t know the Rangers full roster so they *may* have an African American player but I don’t think any were activated or at least played for the post season. And I suppose basketball *is* easier in some ways. That used to be my arguement when people said baseball players weren’t athletes. Two words. Michael Jordan. It’s a strange state of baseball, though

I have never heard one poster EVER lead with how Todd Worrel or Nen lost game 6 in 2002. I’ve only heard either lukewarm assent that well maybe they had a part, I’ve heard how Nen gave up is arm for the team. Worrell? Probably the ultimate headcase, BTW… Then Game 7-who actually wanted the ball? Livan. He failed but the fuck wanted the ball….
and so back to Edgar: how many times do we hear in ONE game how a guy missed his pitch? They missed maybe? 12? 15? From Lewis… Edgar got one- on the biggest stage, the biggest inning, two out.. 13 years removed from his last one… and he sent 18 million bucks and 52 years of broken dreams into the big sky of Texas… he looked kinda lazy rounding third, though…

Flav, not certain that you have the same processor that Twin put in my system, but I have spent the last couple of days getting educated on 2.6 GHZ AMD Triple Core Processor . . .

“AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. With Triple-Core technology, three complete processor cores on a single die run at the same frequency to deliver exceptional multi-tasking power, allowing users to surge through the most demanding processing loads, including advanced multitasking, critical business productivity, complicated visual design and modeling, serious gaming, and visually stunning digital media and entertainment.”

My old Dell 8400 Dimension had an Intel Pentium 4, 2.9GHZ (one core vs. 3 on the AMD) processor that was only capable of 16 and 32-bit computing. Equally important, it only had 512MB RAM vs. 4GB RAM in the Twin “roadster” (OMG!!!!! 8 times more than what I had before). In short, this system was almost top of the line for 2003, but is Model T Ford technology today. I’m almost embarrassed to mention that I only have an 80GB 5200 RPM hard drive . . . We’re talking a terabyte of storage with Mike’s system (terrible at math, but that’s more than 10 times the storage space I have now).

What else? Oh yeah, last but not least – Mike has installed a Sapphire Radeon HD5670 Ultimate 1GB DDR5 DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card . . . I had a measly 256MB NVidia Video card.

OK, now my baseball analogy . . . Think Bengie Molina in a foot race with Willie Mays.

I can’t wait until I get my system!!!!! Thanks Mike!

Xoot, check out “Eastern Stars” the story of San Pedro de Macoris baseball. Starts from way back and goes all the way to present (2008, maybe), includes very interesting commentary on the burgeoning baseball academies. Kids in the DR can sign at 15 and a half if I remember correctly, live in a dorm, get a few squares and some tutoring on what to expect, and play ball.

Thing is, if they don’t make it over here and get released by their minor league team, they are at that point illegal aliens. Most end up in NYC or Fla with relatives, going back to the San Pedro sugar mills not being a great option. For the Robinson Canos of the world (and their families, he is third generation to try to play ball), life is great.

Even winter ball that the fans are so passionate about is taking a big hit because the parent clubs here don’t want the big stars to play much, if at all.

In the midst of a good interview with Jon Miller on KNBR today, in which Miller had a lot of great things to say about the ’10 season, Ralph asked him about Pablo’s future, and Miller was actually pretty rough on Pablo, or I guess you could call it “tough love.” Miller talked about how Pablo needs to get it together, diet-wise, or he’s going to end up out of the major leagues in the not-so-distant future.
    Pablo has to understand that.
