A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Sweeping Cleveland out of Town and A Critically Important Vote

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 26, 2011

Lost in all the commotion of Dirrrrty heading to the DL, Zito returning and the clever ways we have developed to score a run is this nugget: Since The Mad Bum Implosion Inning our pitching staff has pitched 44 innings and given up 6 runs. When your pitching staff is dropping a 1.22 ERA on teams you can tolerate having a horrid offense–possibly the worst in either league……

So let’s assume Dirrrrty isn’t hurt and there isn’t any question whatsoever about his health. What is his trade value right now? It’s not hard to see that it’s a little on the low end but some of you might argue that his value is always pretty high. I’m fine with that for the sake of this next vote. Because he’s a FA next year I highly doubt that the Mets would agree to this deal. Another thing to keep in mind as you thoughtfully consider where to assign your single precious vote: assume that Reyes walks at the end of the year so we are only getting him for the rest of this year and the playoffs. Also assume that if we didn’t trade Sanchez he would sign another 1 year deal with us for approximately the same as he’s making this year (4.8 mill)

I’m surprised that Sanchez will be UFA in 2012. I guess he’ll be moved for something. If the Mets would so that deal straight up sure do it but I would think that Sabean could get a better deal. Not necessarily a better player than Reyes but a player that can help this year (O. Cabrera?) and a prospect or two. Maximize the return.

  3. willieD's avatar willieD said, on June 26, 2011 at 8:18 am

Sanchez does admit to some soreness, and bochy says velocity was down. Sanchez thought he could pitch thru it, takes the company line, “I wasn’t pitching well….and I need to get better.” Has to be a big red flag to the Mets or anyone else. He would not be cheap, and obviously isn’t going to help the Mets get any better than they are, which is under .500 with reyes having mvp season. This deal never happens, unless you toss in a couple of belt, wheeler brown burriss crawford. And of course no one can be traded while on the DL, so you’d have to see what happened after sanchez came off the DL and started a couple times, yadda yadda.
Because of what happened last year compared with this season, a lot of people are smugly claiming Giants were a fluke. Big drop off in offensive numbers from the likes of Huff, Torres, Burrell and even Posey when he was healthy, plus the awful June of Lincecum and Sanchez are going to color the perception of value when you start talking trades.
Btw saw Hanley (who doesn’t exactly run like reyes) last night make the same dumb base running mistake Nate made last week, getting himself thrown out at third on a ground ball hit right at the SS, just an out after he had whacked a two run double. Capt. Jack must have loved that one.

Any deal, for anyone, esp if it involved giving up starting ptiching, I’d want someone you can help build the team around for long term. Rentals, no, and I am just reluctant to get into bidding war on long term big bucks FA like reyes would be in the off season. As pointed out yesterday, just look at what the cubs are paying their guys. Jayson werth is hitting .232 for the Nats this year, and there are other examples of over paid under performing guys with big contracts all over the league…..one of whom we just activated.

Thanks for putting up the poll question, Flav. But I already knew what the results would be. 90% of Flappers would rather wait, and believe, that Miggy will come out of his funk. Same 90% are happy with our “Dynamic Duo” at catcher. Why would anyone want a guy like Reyes, who if he were a Giant, would lead the team in runs scored (by 31 over Torres), lead the team in OPS ( by 110 pts over Ross), lead the team in SBs (by 20, again over Torres). Not to mention that Reyes currently leads the NL in batting. Why would the Giants who are DEAD LAST in runs scored and nearly every other offensive category need a guy like Reyes? What in the world was I thinking?

    • Nipper's avatar Nipper said, on June 26, 2011 at 11:37 am

Mets would demand more than a straight up deal. They have to think of their fans too. New Yorkers are tough customers even when they feel good.

Didn’t vote, but cheated and checked the results. I would favor a Sanchez-Reyes one-up trade IF: Addition of Reyes would for sure augment the offense sufficiently to get the Giants back into the WS. Not sure about that scenario as my suspicion is that the team would still be one bat short of a pretty solid shot, a hitter who can get those ducks off the pond and on the plate. Such a hitter, say Michael Cuddyer, another F.A. to be, could be had only if the Twins seriously drop outta contention, or possibly Carlos Beltran if the Giants are willing to give up half the farm in a mega-swap with the Mutts.

These scenarios do not seem to fall within the M.O. of Sabean and company, so i think the point is moot at best.

The Indians, who haven’t exactly spanked the ball since they’ve been here, get the Desenex burger of having to hit in the shadows for a couple hours tonite off Bum (who hopefully lasts at least that long). downside being the Giants have to hit iin the same conditions. Another example of the tyranny of the networks….wtf is ESPN showing at 4 eastern time that is so fucking important the game could not be shown live at normal 1 PM start time here in broad daylight? Not to mention that it’s getaway day for the Tribe (only to AZ) who still have to fly out of Dodge for a couple hours afterwards.

So let’s see- first it’s said Dirty will lose his spot to Barry Fucking Zito, then he goes on the DL instead… the real question should be “Is there a GM in Baseball stupid enough to trade Reyes for Sanchez?”
Anyway, the Mets want prospects-plural. Make that question “Would you trade Belt and Wheeler for 2 Months of Reyes?”..
Pay attention: the Giants are winning their division without Reyes and they won the World Series while hittiing .235 in the postseason.
Ask yourself this: what are the odds that Vogelsong pitches anywhere close to what he has? Hell, what are the odds he doesn’t blow up entirely? Remember this is a guy whose ERA was 4.81 and WHIP 1.77 last year-IN THE MINORS.You real secure with Zitfuck and Vogelsong as the 4-5? They both faceplant and Babe Ruth ain’t helping, let alone Reyes.A big “NO” from Room A..

  11. SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on June 26, 2011 at 11:25 am

“would for sure augment the offense sufficiently to get the Giants back into the WS” CLASSIC!!!

There ain’t no guarantees Stix, you just take a shot and hope it works out for the best. Do I think Zito will suck balls when he returns? Yes. Do I still worry a bit about Voggy given his history? Maybe a little, but I’m willing to gamble on him being solid for the most part.
I’m not even that down on Dirty, I just want to see Reyes in Orange in Black. He is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered for this team. And if they were able to bring him here, GOOD LUCK getting a ticket to a game at ATT. The sellout streak would span the season with no need for game day discount shenanigans to sell off the crappy seats. Larry Baer—-I’m talking to you!!! Dynamic Pricing would blow up–Cha-ching!
I agree the Mets would probably not go for it, but if they did, I WOULD BE IN.

Even if they got Reyes, I still think a MINIMUM of one more bat is needed. If you compare the current offense straight up to last year’s squad, they are minus Posey, Uribe, Freddie, Ishikawa and Renteria, and have much less effective editions of Torres, Huff, and Burrell. A full year of Cody and a somewhat improved Nate are the only plusses…

Anyway, I think twin’s basically right…as soon as other teams look up and realize it ain’t gonna happen for them this year, maybe one more month, the anybody but T group should have viable options, who hopefully can improve on Crawford’s OPS, just as bad as Tejada’s..

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on June 26, 2011 at 5:08 pm

Sanchez and Wheeler not enough? The Mets have to get *something* for him, they’re not gonna resign him to a long-term deal. Now, another team may outbid us, but Jose Reyes will be traded. Book it!

Hey, I just p/u that boob, Luebke from the Padres for my fantasy team. He threw 5 IP of 1-hit shutout ball today.
Let’s trade Sanchez for that guy…

boy these espn guys sure have some funny 1-liner zingers about our shitty offense don’t they?
“Bumgarner feels like he won the lottery”
“a base hit from their 8 hitter feels like a grand slam”
The hits kept on coming, that was just a sample of their comedic genius…….

we see catchers getting hit all the time and they keep playing.
a sober reality reminder when a mere human gets hit in the mask and has to leave the game.
hey, if I do 20 push-ups during the advert breaks, that is 300 or so by the end of the game
cool, better than walking to the kettle and making a cup of tea.

  68. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 26, 2011 at 7:10 pm

Meat of the Cleveland order gets one in the 6th. Good recovery by the Undertaker after first two got on and nobody out. One tally on a groundout. Otherwise the coffin door gets slammed shut. Seems like the Minnesota episode did not get to this kid’s head. If he stays healthy can you imagine the pitcher Bumgarner may be when he’s say, 27 or so. 21 and counting. At least he’s bar-legal.

    • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on June 26, 2011 at 7:44 pm

really impressed with MadBum’s bounce back game. He pitched stupidly and poorly last time, he hung around with his teammates throughout the game and answered the tough questions afterwards and then he comes out and competes tonight.
His last start was as much on idiot-Whiteside as it was on Bumgarner…….
