A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Frustrating Bump in the Road

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 21, 2011

That game sucked. The Giants weren’t facing the dominant 13K, 2 hit masterpiece that we often see from Kershaw. We had our chances. And each time they were scattered away. Three guys getting picked off 1st base in the first 2 innings  (I’m lumping Torres in there since he was out by a mile at 2nd) is comically bad. We get a guy to scoring position in the 8th and Pablo swings through a totally hittable ball and Beltran doesn’t get a swing off, letting all balls go by peacefully, unmolested by his disinterested bat. He looked like Ryan Howard for a second. Then we get Burriss on 1st base and he doesn’t come close to producing the thing he’s there to do which is to steal 2nd and put himself in scoring position.

Meanwhile, AZ loses and last night would have been the PERFECT time to heap a boatload of pressure on them. Honestly, right now I just really want to make that series relevant and we can’t do that if we miss opportunities like we had last night. Execute or be executed……..

The only good thing that came out of last night’s loss was that tonight is a must-win (as are pretty much all the remaining games except maybe 1 if you think 90 wins gets it done). I’m glad The Dana Eveland Game is now a must-win. He is terrible, I don’t care what he did to us last time. This guy is a WALK MACHINE if you let him be one. The game he pitched against us on September 10th was the low point of the season, in my opinion. The next day the SDG took the reigns at The Flap and she’s been everything you could ask for from a dingy, huge-racked California girl. She doesn’t lose to “The Dana Eveland’s” of the world…….

I think they had to get a bunt down there to ensure Burriss gets to second…no excuse. Have to play for the tie at that moment and avoid the double play. Huff has really sucked…last night really sucked, we had our shot…

Some of you from the 80’s in the Bay Area might remember this: We used to have a radio station (I think it was 98.5) called KOME. Their slogan was “Don’t touch that dial, there’s cum on it.” They’d play that during every commercial break. Probably wouldn’t get away with that in today’s PC world……

    I woke up this morning a little depressed once I remembered the 2-1 loss and opportunities that were missed;
Kind of the same feeling the morning after the 2002 World Series.
But I resolved to myself that this team deserves some high-fives for its effort to make the playoffs, even after all the adversity that it has had to endure.
I somethings think that if it were not for the fan support, unsurpassed by any other team fanbase , there would be nothing to be cheering for today in Giants baseball. These guys don’t want to disappoint us.

Make no mistake here, I’m not ready to start counting the days till spring training and I’m still hopeful that by the time the weekend series comes I’m making a meaningful trip to Finnerty’s in NYC.

Their watching and listening to fan reactions; and If I or we don’t continue to project positive vibes how can we expect them to stay pumped up………….. It’s the least we can do.

    GO GIANTS!

This was a typical Dodger game in LA. They have been doing it for years to the Giants. Great pitching does it to lousy hitters. Ouch!

Torres was out on a botched hit and run, not the same at all…
And no, you do not bunt to get Burriss to second. He was supposed to steal- he never even got a good lead, let alone a good jump.
He pitched well, but Lincecum gets some responsibility as well. You can’t spot Kershaw 2 runs, one on a grounder he should have fielded.
Jansen is filthy, no sin going down swinging, but Beltran is used to the Howard Syndrome- I’m surprised Loo hasn’t brought it up- he took strike 3 with the bases loaded to end game 7 of the 2006 NLCS.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2011 at 10:44 am

So, along with his hitting he needs to work on, his fielding is suspect?

Christ. Gimme a break. It was a liner off the mound. 98% of the pitchers in the league don’t make that play.

Yeah, Timmy’s had the misfortune to face Kershaw 4 times this season. That’s it.

Agreed, Timmeh should never have given up 2. And that fantastic catch on the bunt attempt, dumb. He should have dropped it and then gotten a double play. And, he should have hit a home run if he wanted to win. Can’t expect Beltran or Panda to knock in anybody late. All the 4 games he’s pitched against LA this year — he’s got a 1.64 ERA and 3 losses. Giants have scored 1, 0, 1, and 1 runs in those games. He should have pitched shutouts in every game. What a loser he is….

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 21, 2011 at 10:31 am

That’s his 4 against Kershaw. More to the point, he should know he’s got to pitch a no hitter whenever Kershaw’s pitching. Friggin slacker…

You need to stay in Room B, Twin. Saying Timmy’s fielding isn’t up to par is ludicrous. It was a line drive off the mound. 98 out of 100 pitchers don’t make that play.

Shit, we all know he sucks as a hitter, now he needs to improve his fielding? Christ, you are loony . . .

At some point you expect your ace to win one of those- it’s not an indictment of Tim to expect that. He’s pitched in tough luck and pitched very well. But you’re goddamn right that giving up two is too many sometimes. He tipped the pitch on the HR and spazzed the grounder.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2011 at 11:47 am

Because Flav didn’t go on and on endlessly about Timmy’s lack of hitting, or his fielding acumen, Mike. Tim gave up a couple runs. Yeah, it sucks. Especially against Kershaw. The likely Cy Young winner. But for all intents and purposes it was a gutty performance when his shit wasn’t right.

Giving up 2 runs should be rewarded, not pegged with a loss. No matter who you face. Coming up small? Fuck that. 2 runs in 7? Yeah, a fucking disaster. I guess all of 2007 was ant-small for Matt Cain.

Kand K noted it, Mike? Must be gospel then.

it’s ludicrous to think that Timmy should hit better to support his cause. Yes, it would be nice, but what are the other 8 fucking guys out there for? Window dressing?

And his fielding? Seriously? Jonathan fucking Sanchez gets a pass for wandering around the infield while runners are advancing, and walking a ton of guys this year, but Timmy gets villified for not hitting .280, and not fielding a hard shot up the middle? Right.

5 erros in 5 years. Yeah, that really sucks. Find some other nits to pick, skippy.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2011 at 11:59 am

Maybe Timmy’s hurt, Mike. I mean, that’s why Drrty is 4-7 with a 4.26 era, right?

Right. Timmy needs to hit .300, never make errors, and stop eating burgers.

Fucking Sanchez can walk 6 guys, hit 3, throw 105 pitches in 5.2, given up 5, and it’s a quality start. Pure bad luck he liost 8-3. Because he’s nursing something.

And we all know Timmy can’t win the close ones. Gee, who’s the worst supported pitcher in baseball? Tim Lincecumwith with a 3.82 run support average. Must be his hitting.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Correction, 2nd worst. Worst in the NL. Your close friend Doug Fister has the worst run support. . .

We all expect more from a two time CY wiinner making over 10 mill a year. Don’t we? This has nothing to do with Sanchez, and I never called a 8 run outing a quality start, you lying asshole. Don’t fuck with me, Chuckles. I never directed anything at you, I made a two sentence comment abut Tim having *some* responsibility and you and Smarkk set in like jackals.

Go to your E-Mail. And listen up- youir fuking ace is supposed to win some of those. Period. As far as the hitting, you fucking idiot, I remarked on it after a game he won with his hitting and talked about pitcher’s hitting in general, not just Tim. But you’re goddamn right if he loses a game becase of an error, or failure to hold a runner, or tipping a pitch, WHATEVER- it’s an error just as with any other player. Beltran is a great hitter- but he got no fucking slack for striking out in that situation, and when Tim makes a misktake- it’s fair to note that, too. Again-period.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2011 at 12:09 pm

So, you blame the loss on Timmy’s fielding.

    Gotcha.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 21, 2011 at 12:16 pm

No, I blame the loss on poor hitting by the team, Burriss failing to steal, two runners picked off, bad hitting with RISP, and also a couple mistakes by Tim. Simpleton.

Timmy has won a few clutch games, hasn’t he, Mike? Say, a few in the playoffs last year? Hmmmm.

    He recently beat Philly.

    Yeah, I guess he’s really hit the skids though. His last 5 wins, he’s gotten 4, 3, 3, 2, and 3 runs.

    A veritable feast of support. His last 4 losses? 0, 0, 2, 1, and 1.

    Sorry, no homers.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 21, 2011 at 12:42 pm

That’s true, when I have I even insinuated otherwise? He also had an 0-5 7 plus ERA August last year- he’s had six 5 runs or more outings this year. So besides the close ones, he does stink it up, as well. Fact is, he is the only player or pitcher who has been deemed exempt from criticism regardless of his performance- good, bad, or indifferent.

  18. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 21, 2011 at 12:34 pm

Even great players and pitchers make mistakes, poor Chuckles. Howard is one of the great power hitters in the game, yet he’s fairly criticized for last year’s fuck up in the play offs. Craig noted Panda swinging through a hittable pitch, yet he’s been our MVP. Saying Tim makes mistakes is not saying he isn’t a great pitcher. You and Snarkkles act like I’ve brutalized the poor man.

In other words, what, Mike? Tim can’t handle pressure?

Like I said, I’m sure Craig was posting the ant-small shit in the heat of the moment. Giving up 2 in 7 is not going to cause too many people to say he had a bad outing. He struggled with his control the whole night. To ony give up 2 was commendable. It wasn’t enough.

Kershaw gave up a bomb to fucking Stewie. He almost blew the game himself. Shit happens.

As I said, and surely the brained realize- it’s not a real good idea to spot Kershaw a couple runs. He’s not Russ Ohlendorf, you know. It is a totally reasonable expectation that we aren’t going to score much off of him. Giving up two right away WAS a fuck up. There were plenty by the rest of the team but that doesn’t mean God Man gets zero blame.

The Giants are the last or near last in virtually all material offensive stats in MLB. SF has more holes than swiss cheese in the position player lineup going into the offseason, Franchez and Posey are total unknowns at this point about how they’ll fare next season after huge injuries. Panda’s probably going to have shoulder surgery in the offseason for an unannounced injury. So let’s dissect Lincecum’s fielding and inability to beat LA when he’s gotten 1 or zero runs support in every game. Sweet. Every other MLB GM would give his left nut to have Lincecum. Check that. 26. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 21, 2011 at 1:51 pm

The original comment that got Snarkkles all het up was that Tim had *some* responsibility. It was true then, true now, and will forever be true. It was never said that he was the main reason, I’ve always said he’s a great pitcher, I’ve only pointed out that he’s not God. Snarrk, as usual, fabricates much of the opposing opinion.

  27. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2011 at 1:51 pm

You’ve gone psycho over much less, Mike.

And you still said he should have fielded a tough grounder. Your point, not mine.

Timmy’s an above average fielder at his position. He didn’t make an error on the play. Calling him out on that was wrong.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 21, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Bit if it’s that important, fine. You win. Timmy fucked up wildly in the loss yesterday. No hits, no errors, but damn, he should have done more.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 21, 2011 at 2:12 pm

That’s not what I said, stop being a fucking liar. I said he shared some responsibility for the loss. And he did. And I’ve pointed out that many others did as well. Why aren’t you defending Pablo? Why are mistakes by other fine players noteworthy but not Tim’s? Beltran is hitting .431 this month, does that mean his strike out was OK? You’re a hypocrite, Chuckles. And the fact that it wasn’t an error on the grounder doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have fielded it.
So let’s get it straight then- because Tim is a fine pitcher, he is immune from criticism. But Sandoval, for instance, isn’t.

This was no BFD until Snarkkles and Chuckles blew it way out proportion. mainly with distortion and fabrications about what I’ve posted previously. while I don’t feel timmy’s start was ant-small, he did put the team in a hole early on. I’m going to get railed for this, but it was a little Zito-esque from the standpoint of giving up the early runs. Then the pressure came off a little and he settled down for the rest of the game. But the damage WAS done early. You give up 2 early in a Kershaw start and your team has lost all momentum. Tim’s job was to throw up zeros longer than Kershaw. That’s what ace vs ace looks like. So the more that I think about it, yeah, Timmy came up ant-small last night at the most critical time.

  43. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on September 21, 2011 at 6:05 pm

And my emphasis from the last post is “ace vs ace”. That’s like a heavy weight title fight. You start off throwing up zeros and you do that, if you can, longer than the other ace. As I said, Timmy was pretty shitty in the first 2 innings. That’s like getting knocked down twice in the first 2 rounds. So yeah, it wasn’t “Spinks-esque” since he carried on and righted the ship. But a game of ace vs ace can be lost early and that’s what Timmy did last night: he lost early.

  44. dirtnrocksnreno@yahoo.com's avatar dirtnrocksnreno@yahoo.com said, on September 21, 2011 at 6:08 pm

Zito-esque? Come on. It’s not like he gave up eu sinning after inning and went 4&1/3 before getting yanked with the club down 8-0. Although that 2 spot did seem insurmountable

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 21, 2011 at 8:01 pm

I disagree. It was Zito-esque in terms of the early runs. The number over zero is what’s important when ytou’re facing a guy like Kershaw. Ace V ace isn’t like ZIto V Jack Shithead. You have to go zero for zeros. That’s what aces do when they face each other. He sucked dick the first 2 innings. That’s where we got beat….

Kershaw has won the games that Timmy used to. Say what you will about the offeense, that was expected to be a 2-1 game for good reason-this wasn’t Esmeralda Rogers. In the 55+ years I’ve watched baseball, the match up of aces was alway looked forward to-and we expected a game like last night’s. If Bob Friend, Vern Law, or later Pascual, Kaat- if they gave up a dinger and got beat 1-0, the other guy was better.Period. Blame the G’s if they don’t hit Esmeralda, or Eveland tonight- but Kershaw? Put up zeros Tim, or be ready to lose.

Good thing about the years toiling in Japan and the Minors before the Giants took a flyer on him this Spring was that Vogelsong learned to pitch. The last inning was instructive. Though he gave up a couple singles in the process, Ryan bore down and got Ellis for the third out. Inning over. Quality start. He is a highly mature Major League pitcher and the organization should reward his sterling efforts with a nice salary for next year and an incentive-laden team-option contract for a second year.

Pill is the most interesting question. He’s 27 and not a true prospect, but his 24 homers and 104 RBIs at Fresno are impossible to ignore. Sabean said it’s a matter of getting him on the roster. Would they DFA Miguel Tejada? It’s an interesting question. For now, the idea of adding Pill “has been discussed,” Sabean said. “We’ve got a couple days to figure it out. He’s had a nice year statistically. I think he’s got a base-hit swing. But how much damage within that swing he could provide, I’m not sure. If we all were sold with any of those guys, they’d already have been up here trying to help us.”

If we all were sold with any of those guys, they’d already have been up here trying to help us.” Sabean basically said he wasn’t sure. And they had given Huff a big contract already, and they had advanced Belt ahead of Pill. So, maybe Sabean misjudged Pill. He wasn’t sure if he had the real deal, or a Bowker. It’s not easy judging a guy by AAA stats. We all know that. It’s not knee-jerk defending of Sabean. It’s just being reasonable and fair. Snarkk, if you want to second-guess Sabean about Pill, then second-guess away. Just let us know how many times you’re going to mention it this off-season. 50? 100? 1000?

Defend Sabean all you want on this. He has a habit of bad mouthing his minor leaguers. Did it with Posey, too. If you think they have limitations, keep it to yourself and the minor league staff. Not a great way to instill confidence in your players…

      • zumie's avatar zumie said, on September 21, 2011 at 10:40 pm

I don’t know that I’m “defending” Sabean. Ultimately the GM has to wear the won/loss record. It goes with the job. I’m just not into pounding him relentlessly, especially after winning the World Series. He gave Huff a totally reasonble 22 million dollar two-year deal, and that’s the way it goes. There was no way to know Huff would have a bad season all season. They were hoping he would get it together, for this season AND next season.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 21, 2011 at 10:44 pm

Why bring up Huff, I was talking about minor leaguers being dissed.
I was down with signing Huff. It didn’t work. He was out of shape all season, and sucked. Bummer. He needs to get in shape this offseason, and make it happen next year right out of the box, or ride pine or get traded…

      • zumie's avatar zumie said, on September 21, 2011 at 11:28 pm

There’s absolutely no evidence that Huff was out of shape. He’s a slow runner, but that doesn’t mean he’s out of shape.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 21, 2011 at 11:35 pm

Huff runs first to third and can barely get his breath standing at third. He puts hands on knees, needs a damn oxygen mask. He is clearly out of shape. Maybe he has a back problem they’re keeping quiet, but that doesn’t explain the oxygen debt on routine running. Other players go first to third, they don’t need a gurney to recover…

      • zumie's avatar zumie said, on September 21, 2011 at 11:45 pm

Why are Olympic sprinters out of breath at the end of their sprints? Because they’re out of shape? No, it’s because they are running as fast as they can. Huff is slow, and when he runs as fast as he can, he gets out of breath. I’m not saying he’s in sprinter shape, obviously, but to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges- is he out of shape for a guy that plays firstbase on a major league baseball team? I don’t think so.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 21, 2011 at 11:51 pm

Romo with 65 Ks in 46 innings. He has really amped up his repertoire. Better fball control, tighter slider. MLBtraderumors says he’s arb eligible this winter, so he’ll get a big bump for 2012, maybe sign a two year deal…..

I cling to the hope that one day when Romo does his overly animated skyward gesture he uses his middle finger. “That’s right, it’s *my* fucking slider they can’t hit!”
