A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

One Down 3 to Go For 3 in Five

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 22, 2014

As a fan, the difference between this World Series and the other two is easy to pinpoint: I’m as calm and cool as a cucumber. We’ve got 2 in the kitty so it’s not the end of the world if we don’t finish the job. And, unlike Royal fans, this isn’t my first rodeo. (apparently, I’m trying to break the record for most cliches used to start a Flap thread). Sorry, I’ll stop.

Twinfan had a brilliant post at the end of the last thread. Here it is:

twinfan1 said, on October 21, 2014 at 11:23 pm (Edit)

“It’s not surprising that we’re underdogs year after year. Bochy preps for the postseason from Day one. His patience pays off when the guys he stuck with come up big.None of the experts think of Blanco, Arias, Perez, Ishi- the game is all about the stars to much of the media whereas the postseason is won by a 25 man team, not 3 or 4 guys. Juan hasn’t done anything sexy- he’s just helped win games quietly. Ishi was a *little* louder but how big was it that Bochy trusted a 4 time castoff to start in the playoffs? This a team game and we’ve fielded the best team. and the best manager.”

I couldn’t agree more. The brain dead lemming national media spends their time learning the names of the stars like Puig and Miggy. They don’t understand what it takes for a team to coalesce and win. “ALL THE WAY” win. That’s why so many of them spend most of the season debating who’s going to win the MVP in each league.

I’ve watched this “team thing” happen for 3 straight now and it seems obvious to me. Experience absolutely matters in games like these. Why don’t the national chumps understand this?

As for the Royals, as I said, they should have lost at least one post season game before last night. Their fans looked broken after UnderPants hit his monster bomb. And Ned Yost has no business managing against Bruce Bochy. NONE BUSINESS.

    Twin!! thanks mate,

It is some ‘bigger’ vision, that the sport called baseball has, that makes it ‘the greatest game’. And I say that humbly. The appreciation of subtleties and the minutia of this team sport came to me slowly, first from my father and then with many summers of playing little league, high school and local ball into my 30s. Now, sharing this blog with you and the other flappers, I am truly blessed to be seeing this deeply ingrained magic that baseball has for us. This world series clearly shows the bigger picture, the genius of this game, but only for those that apprehend. And my team is the one that is doing it. Amazing.

Yeah, 3 in 5. You go Big Guy. Great read on posts yesterday during game from everyone. I didn’t get in til late and SF way up, didn’t want to hex things. Great gif of Aoki with “…the whiff…”
Followed along on cbs site tweets. I think Hank tweeted Strickland more likely to be needed in other games, better choice by Sensei Bochy to pitch in 9th.
Lot of good stuff from usual suspects like Pavs, Baggs, Hank, Killion (ugh) even Aimless G using Shields used to be nickname along side national guys like Stark and Olney plus one local KC guy Speaking of hexes (yes I know it’s irrational superstition), why do we need to see Lincecum?
Love the schadenfrude of Zum posts from Dodger bloggers, that stuff is hilarious. Interesting that new GM’s first move is to announce 2 trips isn’t going anywhere (unlike a few of his players). Pretty funny that once they actually got on Nat’l TV and their fans could finally see them, LA completely fell apart…while Giants continue to shine.

Awesome thread, Craig. (And I was digging the cliches.) I went back to see the last few posts from last night and saw Twin’s post. As usual…another great one, Michael. Well said my friend.

What a dominating performance by Big Country last night. And even though his streak of scoreless innings ended, it is, in a way, a good thing, as now we can proved to all the other yahoos who do not follow the Giants that he truly is human and not a cyborg.

I am just absolutely fucking pumped after that dominating win last night. Yep…it is only one of the required four…but I will take it.

Giants play close games all year. They know the drill when it’s crunch time. As for trusting Ishi to play left, well, OK. They didn’t have a lot of choice in the matter with Morse hurt and Perez being the other option, so trust is a good moniker for that. Kudos to him, he’s come through. Perez had a good bunt last night. He may become the Giants designated bunter, and I’m totally down with that…

Pence is just something else. Well, this whole damned team is. Another gem of a TEAM.

Anyway, I shared a similar video on this last night. This one is a bit different (still Pence’s speech), but followed-up with some still shots of player interaction (hell, one of them is from 2010, I think, as it has Mota in it).

Just another twist on a great video.

I’m guessing that the Royals will be a bit less loosey-goosey, smiley-laughing today. They know they’re in a Series now.
And as others have pointed out, when they get to SF, they lose their DH, and they have to play a difficult ballpark that they’re not very familiar with.

Well said, twin. The national media is a big fail across the spectrum; politics, current affairs, world affairs, etc. Their failure when it comes to sports, baseball in particular, is just another example. West of the Mississippi is shit for them and San Francisco is nothing more than a tiny, flickering blip on their radar. That’s okay, it makes these times that much more enjoyable. Fuck ’em, I say.

What a great win last night for the boys. Snatching the all-important Game 1 came surprisingly easy but in typical Giants’ fashion, with good pitching, defense and timely hitting. These guys are a juggernaut and Boch is the captain of the ship. Ruthless efficiency, killer instinct and unshakable in their resolve. Bum continues to make an historical name for himself and, in my humble opinion, is already one of the all-time playoff greats. Kershaw is at home scratching his nuts while Bum makes history.

Bochy using Stickland last night was an inspired move. Given the likliehood of close games in this series, he’s more likely going to need Strick than Timmy and now the kid has some confidence moving forward. His developing slider looks like a nice weapon against lefties.

It’s way too early to get cocky about things, and I’m working hard to keep things in check, but this is a helluva nice beginning. Go Peavy.

    GO GIANTS!

Poobahs and prognosticators on the national sports media are busy backing water this morning as they did last night. They now say that they couldda, sorta saw this coming but were so ensorcelled by the 29 year hiatus for the Royals and their sweep of the Divisional and LCS series that they went with them.

What it boiled down to last night with the Undertaker on the mound and Full Throttle, very most high Reverend Underpants Popeye Pence providing most of the drama business, the Giants came off as akin to the Harlem Globetrotters taking on a local scratch team.

Most Giants fans, the casual ones, don’t get it much more than the national media types do, but the Giants have somehow blended an incredible cast of characters into this professional ensemble similar in many respects to a symphony orchestra with BB15 as maestro. The amazing part is that with a number of stars not one of them is a prima donna out to steal all the scenes. The media is mesmerized with their latest mantra: “Where’s Timmy”? At this point most Flappers would answer: “Who the fuck cares? He may make a cameo in a blowout and should the situation arise where we really, truly, absolutely need him he’ll be there.

2014 is looking more and more like the year where the Giants are here to instruct the baseball world on how it’s done. Factor in the absence of Pagan and Cain and the whole scenario is all the more remarkable. The Halloween Machine is oiled, greased, fueled up and on a roll.

Even Lincecum was thinking the faux controversy was lame. Where was I? Lost track of time and then didn’t want to disrespect my teammates by coming out there late. That goes back to Bochy as you say.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 22, 2014 at 9:41 am

I’m as big a Tim fan as anybody, but I’m not really buying that too much. How do you lose track of time before the WS? All your teammates are leaving the clubhouse for the field, how do you not figure that out? If we had local media that weren’t eunuchs, we’d know what’s really up with that. Maybe nothing, maybe something…

Nice article. But, I don’t really get off THAT much on how all this Giants success impacts the Doghairs and their fans. LA now is just like most other teams, except a lot more dough. They pull players in and out, season to season, except faster, since they have more dough to just eat mistakes and move on. I can’t really get much into disliking them, since they don’t have much of a team persona anymore. Hanley Ramirez? Beckett? Juan Uribe? They’re as much as part of their former teams as being a Dodger. When LA had Garvey, Lopes, Cey, and Russell, and Lasorda, well, that was a group you could get a good loathing going. And, when a late Sept win over them was fantastic because it deprived them of the division title, not because it put you into the division win. All this Giants success the past 5 years has me thinking more of just enjoying it for it’s own sake. That it’s ticking off what real fans are left of LA, well, that’s just a little “gravy”…

Great post, Mike. One that should be sent to every member of the baseball and sports writing community at large.

These guys are confounded over and over about the success of the Giants. As if it’s some sort of fluke. Again.

Yeah, Wilco, the Royals #2 guy is a sore-armed fastball pitcher. What could go wrong there? Our starters are better than theirs, and our pen isn’t quite as good, but having a lead negates their worth. As does negating their speed by keeping it on the bench.

That being said, Peavy needs to limit the walks today.

It’s ok. And who cares if they even win it. They did not have a good regular season, benefitted by dumb rules, and got really lucky at the right time, for them. The dodgers, excluding their bullish*t pen, their manager, and some quiet and untimely bats still had a better regular season. SF’s little waltz into the WS is hollow by comparison. • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 22, 2014 at 12:15 pm

I think some of that is that the national media has rarely ever taken the time to get to know the team very well, over the last several years. The Giants have had a lot of amazing stories over the last 5 years, and the national media missed a bunch of them.
But, as others have said, it’s just the way it is with the national media, especially regarding West Coast teams that are not L.A., and in the long run it’s benefitted the Giants. The Giants haven’t gotten big heads about all of their success in recent years. They’ve flown under the radar, and it’s worked to their advantage, IMO.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 22, 2014 at 12:21 pm

Agree zum. But, KC has been even more off radar than the Giants until this season. Yet, the focus is on them, not the near-dynasty Giants. Cinderella story? Well, the 2010 Giants were the Cinderella story, and the media treated them like crap, it was all look how great the Tigers are. Cinderella or 2-time recent champs, it’s like the Giants just have a team wide BO that the media finds particularly foul…

At first the way the Royals were playing in the playoffs, they sor of reminded me of the 2010 Giants. But then last nights game happened. Pitching jus wasn’t there. due to layoff? I don’t think so. Timmy, Cain, Bum, none of them faultered like that. Anyway not saying this is going to be a cake walk….but if it goes past 5 games I will be surprised.

Have not read the comments yet but I forgot to note last night about Boch’s great move, championship managing, to bring in Perez early to lay down the bunt and be there for defense, but that move also opened up the game. I hope Posey shows a bit more patience and holds off on the first pitch when runners are on base…

  53. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 22, 2014 at 5:49 pm

Happy for Blanco that he is shining in the post season. I’ve given him my share of grief, but sometimes I overlook the little things he does. Moreover, he is worth his weight in gold in the outfield (and is a better outfielder then Pagan).

  54. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 22, 2014 at 5:52 pm

Peavy has no idea where the ball is going. Throws two balls and has to come in with the fast ball, which Infante knew was coming. That had “hit me” all over it.

  55. ODB's avatar ODB said, on October 22, 2014 at 5:53 pm

As nauseating as the bias is — especially when it is in favor of a team as loathsome, stupid, and outmoded as the Royals — the TV guys do have a vested interest in not seeing another SF wipeout of the opposition.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 22, 2014 at 6:17 pm

Not certain you are getting the same view I am in Asia Loo . . . They just panned on Posey in the dugout nursing a hurt thumb with the trainer. But yeah, he is flailing in this series. Need him to help out (especially in lieu of him running us out of big innings with his inept running).

  63. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 22, 2014 at 6:06 pm

Agree James (as I also agree with John). Fox could be a bit more subtle about wanting a competitive series. Right now, it does come off as “bias,” but I know they could give 2 shits about who wins . . . They just want ratings and a wipe out ruins all the future advertising revenue they make on beer, chips, and whatever else the fuck they are selling.
