A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Resilient. Strong. Winning.

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 26, 2014

The Giants are 7-0 in playoff games started by Voggy so clearly Bochy knew what he was doing. πŸ™‚

Don’t forget that Petit’s dad, who hates to fly, got to watch his son win that game yesterday.

I’m quite positive that I’ll never forget that game. That one will stand out among the rest regardless of the outcome of this series. What did they have? 14 singles? Never have that many singles been louder.

So here we go. Critical Game 5 with Country Breakfast on the hill. I feel confident about our chances……

Caught the game driving from Ithaca, NY, to Philly, mostly on a Buffalo AM station. So retro. Thrilled to hear the Giants pull ahead, 7-4, though static was intervening to prevent me from getting all the details. Pulled in to a parking spot directly across the street from my daughter’s apartment. An amazing feat in Center City Philadelphia. That was about as miraculous as the surging rally. Go, Giants! I feel good, though I respect that nothing is automatic tonight or for the Series. But what a game for the ages.

Though the ballet is a matinee and the game is at night, this adds a dash of superstitious hope. As y’all know my going to the ballet [sounds like code] in Philly tends to be good luck for the Giants. (Cf. 2010 et al.)

Great game to watch, one for the ages.
I’m in the *closer is overrated* crowd, tho I do realize not everyone can handle that role. Often the more critical time in the game comes earlier than in the 9th and a set up guy has to come in and get out of a sticky situation.

So when Giants were rallying to tie the game up and then take lead, Yost’s guys couldn’t get anyone out and as Zum said, “They’re not Petits.” But he was waiting to hang onto his lead so he could play it by the book, and never brought any of his better pen guys in at all. Like everyone else these guys sat and watched Giants take advantage and romp, while Petit pitched hitless ball for 3 innings. In other words, having a great closer didn’t do Yost any good and at critical point in the game he didn’t have his top guys in there…but if he wasn’t so wedded to his formula he could have brought any of them in at any time.
Now Series is tied with Bum on the hill for Game 5.

Something else a guy on cbs site brought up: After Panik’s sac bunt to advance both runners they walked Posey to get to Pence with bases loaded. Like Loo mentioned Bochy didn’t do that night before and I wondered if taking the bat out of Posey’s hands was the right move.
But what struck me was, Yost had his IF playing in, instead of back for the DP. Pence hit a one hop shot right at SS who came home and got the one out. In that same situation (hypothetical I realize) if SS was at DP depth they would have had excellent chance to turn the DP, Panda and Belt never bat, yada yada.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 26, 2014 at 10:33 am

Yost said postgame he didn’t want to risk DP depth because of Pence’s speed and proven ability to beat out a hit. You and I can disagree with that, but it’s a plausible rationale…

Great stuff from you as always, Wiillie (Davenport? Davis?)
Escobar’s getting second guessed by many for not trying to get the DP…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 26, 2014 at 9:15 am

Thanks, man. when TV showed where IF was playing, I thought wtf? Especially given how often Pence hits ball on the ground, 1 out. Escobar might have had a good chance anyway with Posey on first and how hard Pence hit that one. If he and 2b were at DP depth, I think it would have been easy one
Yeah, *Davenport* who never lost at hurdles for a long time, tho I always wished I could have run like Willie Davis too. Watching guys run 100 yd. dash and winner being called world fastest man always impressed me.

Concur…a game for the ages. And as Mr. Kokunuts said, nothing is a given in this game, or in the remainder of the series, but as Craig said in the thread, you have to like our chances with Big Country on the bump tonight.

I have not been on much during the games. While I have towed the line shared by many that I am good with this season even if our boys do not win it all, that is clearly not the case. During many of these games I am pacing the floor during key points in the game, and just too wound around the axle to post here.

Last night when the Royals went up 4-1 I I was totally disgusted and about to bust at the seams (this series obviously means more to me than I have wanted to admit…as I mentioned earlier). I paused the DVR and poured myself a tall drink and headed for the hot tub, thinking the steam of the tub might help me blow-off some of my own steam. As I relaxed and gathered my wits, I calmly told myself that Petit will come in and calm things down, and with the game being only in the 3rd inning, that there was still a lot of ball to play (boy, was that an understatement). So, I watched the next four innings being about half an hour behind the live game. I finally got in-synch with the live game around the 6th or 7th inning.

Also, while I have done so via email with most who gathered for a mini Flapalooza yesterday, apologies for not making it yesterday. I had shit to do in the morning. It was raining pretty damned good here in the foothills, and as the day progressed, I just lost interest in making a 2.5-3 hour drive, fucking around with the traffic to find parking, and then making that long drive home last night after the game. Believe me, I was there with you in spirit Tom, Wilco, and Edd. Edd and I will meet up probably sooner than later here in the Sierra foothills, and I am hopeful that I get another opportunity to meet Wilco.

Looking forward to this key game 5. I too have a good feeling about today’s game, and if we head back to KC up three games to two, well, I like that scenario. Peavy in game six, and Petit should be good to go if needed.

Off to work on some of the finishing touches of this big-ass landscape project we have been working.

Make it an awesome day FU.

Pawlie – glad to hear you made it home safe and sound. Safe travels to Wilco, too.

It’s hard, at least for me, to take the “we’ve already had a great season” stance. When your team is in the WS it’s fuck it, all bets are off. We’re here now let’s win the goddamn thing. It’s just too hard to get to the Show and you never know when you’ll get back, if at all. After and entire lifetime of the Giants not winning it all, I’m flat out greedy at this point.

Fuck that, just happy to be here BS.Anyteam battling all year never think that way, and for sure the Giants who’s team chemistry and mental preperation in big game situations,is the best in the game.
Once you make it to playoffs and keep rolling thru teams to the “Main Show” you are proving your true mettle. Giants have that, with all the experienced players on their roster in playoffs/ W/S!!!
So screw anybody who think they’re lucky to be here, cause a 3rd ring and another ticker tape parade down Market St proves critics wrong again!!!

What a difference a day makes. 24 hours ago there were many a long face among Giants fans. Comments on the blog were anywhere from morose to respectful towards the Royals who had actually out NLed the Giants in their 3-2 win Friday evening. This morning we are GIANT.

Use More O Petit. At this point there is a close run for Series MVP between him and the Reverend. That is, of course, should the Giants prevail. We all feel pretty confident about the Shields-Undertaker matchup tonight. But this is baseball, so you never know. Yet the Giants are deeply experienced in post-season play and certainly know how to win. A victory for Bumgarner tonight and a split in K.C. is all we need.

  8. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 26, 2014 at 9:06 am

One last thought. I agree that Yost totally blew it last night by not going to his big boys in the pen earlier. The kid Guthrie had a nice outing in game 3, and it is a nice little story about him also playing in the college world series earlier this year, but the Giants tattooed the kid yesterday.

Agree with a Pawlie (and many have made the same comment on previous threads) that without Petit, we are not even in the series, and probably not in the post season.

The team with the vaunted bullpen last night was the Giants. Bochy was masterful with his switches, and non moves (it was in the 4th I think when he could have pinch-hit Morse for Perez). Perez made a running catch later in the game (cannot recall the inning) that Morse would never have made, that would have translated to an easy double. I don’t recall the specifics, but I believe it was said that Bochy used eight different guys in the 9 spot in the line-up last night. The man was pushing all the right buttons and pulling all the correct levers.

And it was so damned cool to see all the bats wake the hell up almost simultaneously with a tidal wave of hits that seriously extinguished any hopes the Royals may have had at going up 3-1.

I agree with you Craig…that is a game that I will never forget.

Love seeing the little guys (Perez Duffy) come through. What is left to say about Sir Yus? And Pablo RH? After he looked so awful. It was hard not to think.back to all those home games where they couldn’t scratch out a run. Gutty performance by all. Even VSong.

Afterwards thought back to 2002 again. Checked out the box score. Giants rallied from 3-0 in the fifth, scoring 3 times, and beat the Angels 4-3 in game 4 to even that series. Blew em out in game 5. We all know what happened next. Momentum can be so fleeting.

I expect Shields will be like Wainwright, better the second time. Can Bum do it again? This could be a classic.

Yep, a game to remember. What downs early, then what ups later. Giants scored all those, yet still left 22 men on base, that’s just wild. Total team effort, the Giants had 18 men play a role in the game. The Perez for Morse thing certainly turned out well. Perez got a knock (but, left 4 total OB), and flagged down that potential double down the line that Morse would have watched land. So, Bochy comes out on top again with that choice. The bats bailed him out of letting Voggy twist too long, all because the pitcher’s spot was up first in the bottom of the third? BFD on that one. Anyway, I don’t know what the Morse as PH now means for next year. Maybe nothing, if he’s even back. For more than 1/2 the year, Morse started and then got double switched late for better defense. Now, if he’s 100%, he’s a PH with just one shot at crushing a ball in WS games. I guess you can say that defense matters more now as Bochy can’t afford to give away runs with the Giants not hitting consistently and that tough KC Pen 3 amigos. But as last night shows, getting run production early can put those 3 amigos into the “who cares” bin…

  18. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on October 26, 2014 at 11:42 am

Last night’s game was intense to watch. Just a couple of small things I noticed: a blind man could see that Petit has been the team’s MVP throughout the playoffs, but one sequence stood out for me in game 4. 5th inning, 1 out, Omar Infante at the plate, runner on second after a lead-off double. With a 1-0 count Petit paints the outside corner at the knees with an 89 mph speedball. Infante doesn’t lie the call. Fuck him.

Next pitch is another speedball, this time at 85 mph and again on the outside corner at the knees, which Infante cues foul. Final pitch is a nasty slider to the outside part of the plate and snapping away at the last moment from Infante, who tries to check his swing but can’t. That pitch is at 76 mph. Right turn, meat.

All this to say, for those who wonder how this guy does it, watch that at bat. Slow, slower, slowest, all in a perfect location. The man can PITCH and he’s been doing it throughout this postseason. The Fox announcers keep debating about how he doesn’t throw that hard, blah, blah. Yusmeiro proves that you don’t have to bring it to be good…Hunter Strickland is learning that on the fly. Hit your spots. Take a little off here. Throw in a wicked slider there. Bye, bye Omar. Really good stuff.

The other thing was Affeldt jelly-legging Hosmer in the 7th. Hosmer reached base on a cheap hit, but the moment still bought back sweet memories of Affeldt doing the same thing to Prince Fielder in the latter part of game 4 of the 2012 WS. Awesome.

    Go Bum. Go Giants.

Those Faux announcers must not have watched Greg Maddux pitch and surely weren’t around for the superlative junk balling Giants reliever Stu Miller specialized in back in the day. After some quality coaching by one of the two or three best pitching coach combos in the business young Strickland is gonna be NAAASTY. Meanwhile, whether or not SF wins the whole shebang, upper management needs to give Use More of Petit one helluva salary bump.

Ballet great. Evening stroll. Sunset. I feel good. I concur with many here: I fooled myself: glad to be here in the WS, blah blah blah. But while driving on the Penn Turnpike last night I’m yelling my head off at the radio and was getting morose about the whole business. Yelling, alone in the car. From one who was “happy to be here.” Someone texted me asking if my team would win tonight. Down 4-1, I gloomily replied “apparently not.” I reflected on me and my nature of being a fan: am I that much of a doomer? Isn’t this third WS appearance in five years enough to cast out doom? Apparently not. The answer is both complex and easy: like a trauma survivor I can’t forget those dark years or coming so close, e.g., 2002. So I waver: optimist vs. realist vs. pessimist vs. fatalist. Make any sense? I may watch at the Misconduct Tavern in Philly. Daughter doesn’t have cable. In 2010, we walked by the Misconduct after the ballet. TV on the sidewalk. Sandovals hits into DP. Phillies fans hoot and holler. Ask Ryan Howard how THAT night ended.

Yeah, admittedly, I was “just happy to be here” too. However, during the season, I rarely had a doubt that they would make the playoffs. Another thing I have had a chance to reflect on – I hate to lose In anything. Yet, I had just about thrown in the towel and given up on yesterday’s game when they were down 4-1. I think that feeling comes from the fact that I really had no influence on the outcome, other then cheering or cussing them out. Definitely, a helpless feeling. I think I will take a page from a couple of other guys here – maybe take a shower, do something else, post less here, etc., if they are down again.

Yahoo is currently featuring a niiice piece on Duffman, who scored run #2 last night after singling as a pinch hitter in the second. The slender 6-2, 170 pound infielder was described, among other things, as an extremely hard worker and a student of both the arts of hitting and base-running. At 23 the 18th rounder looks like a fixture for next year’s 25 man and is one of five rooks on the W.S. roster.

I’ve heard some say on radio that we won’t really appreciate another WSeries here until it’s done. Baloney. I’m appreciating this real hard, right now. This is the last game of the year at ATT, and the last WS game in SF for who knows how long until the next one. Hell, I might not be alive when the next WS game hits ATT. I hope it’s next October, but who knows? I think all of us here get how special this is. Enjoy it…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 26, 2014 at 5:54 pm

Wow! Loo you using the word “Focused” is fortuitous for us. Why? Last night I was with 3 bar girls and we were discussing that word. Coincidence? I think not, as I do not believe in fate, nor coincidences. There is an explanation for everything . . . No idea what this means, but I think it is good luck for us (I do believe in good luck if it is “where preparation meets opportunity”).

By the by, not pulling your leg here, as I wrote PaulinAsia earlier this morning, telling him that I was attracted to this one VN woman (1 of the 3 above) and one of the reasons was the fact that she was able to explain the meaning of the word in English without hesitation or pause. Anywho, her and I are going out to lunch today. So maybe it is just lucky for me and not the Giants. I hope not. πŸ™‚

Appears the Giants strategy this go-round is to wear em down. Twenty-three pitches has Shields at 63 in four innings. The approach is to take as many pitches as possible and then dink a single. Evidently no swinging for the fences or even attempting gaps vs the swift K.C. outfielders. Go with the flow. Make the pitcher work and sweat. So far its produced two runs over 4 innings vs a good AL hurler.
