A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Guessing the Starting 8 HR Total

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 2, 2015

How many home runs do you think this crew will hit? 100? That’s what Kuip said on the radio today. Here’s my quick take:

Pagan: 4

Aoki: 2

Belt: 20

Pence: 20

McGehee: 7

Crawford: 15

Posey: 23

Panic: 12

Apparently, I’m going with 103

    McGehee: 10

If Maxwell displaces Aoki I’ll go with 120.

    Pagan – 7
    Aoki – 5
    Belt – 22
    Pence – 21
    McGehee – 11
    Craw – 9
    Posey – 24
    Panic – 10
    Total: 109

And if I am wrong, not a big deal, IMO. I do not think the long-ball is going to be that key with the team this year. I see them putting the ball in play regularly (hitting those spacious Phone Park gaps) and keeping the line moving, and to me, that is more important than the HRs.

Here are a couple of things I posted towards the end of the last thread, and I think you Flappers will find interesting:

The first is this article on Caballo Loco…discussing his relationship with Mays, among other things.

    http://tinyurl.com/mqyszpu

The other thing I heard on the local news last night during a story on the Giants upcoming season, etc., was that the ballpark will be paid off in two years.

I’ll see your 103 and raise it.
      Pagan – 11
      Aoki – 1
      Belt – 29
      Pence – 20
      McGehee – 12
      Craw – 17
      Posey – 21
      Panic – 8
      Total: 119

      Bench
      Arias – 0
      Duffster – 5
      Maxwell – 9
      Ishi – 5
Sanchez (and Susac when Hector is on the DL) -7
      Total: 26

      Pitchers
      Bum – 4
      The rest – 3
      Total: 7

      Grand total – 152

Pence losing time won’t help. A little troubling mcG didn’t homer in ST.
I guess no more than 100 unless Belt goes ballistic and Maxwell plays a lot and goes 2012, but they could lead the league in triples. And I think a top 5 ba/obp. Aoki Pagan Belt Posey Pence McG Panik Duffy all capable of .280-300.
Bottomline: don’t think offense will be the problem

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 2, 2015 at 10:01 am

Agree that offense will not be a problem, 54. And Casey was not brought in to hit the long ball.

Chi and giants54 are both right – this team will maximize the hit and run, as well as steals (essentially the same formula, coupled with pitching they’ve used in the recent past). The Phone Park is made for that (sans a Barry Bonds – which we don’t have).

I went when the Cubs were playing the Dodgers, so I got to root for the Cubs. Had a blast except some days can be parka weather in April there. They have beer venders, Chi. 16oz Old Styles right to your seat and they have Chicago Dogs, well you knew that, but they were great. The fans know their stuff. I made the mistake of asking my buddy if he knew who was pitching for the Dodgers, and I swear, the whole row in front of me, men, women, children and goats, turned to give me the evil eye. Great times.

“….men, women, children and GOATS (the curse lives on). LMAO…

That would be a thought…take in a Dodger-Cub game so I could root for the Cubbies. I actually like the Cubs, and outside of our Giants, they are one of my favorite NL teams. But it would be tough to spend the coin, etc., and not go see them play the Giants.

  11. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on April 2, 2015 at 11:17 am

The Giants hit 132 last year for 17th in the league. Pretty much middle of the pack. Maybe they end up 20th this year? I agree with giants54 in that I think they’ll play well to their park regardless of HR totals.

  12. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 2, 2015 at 11:36 am

I really don’t care how many they hit, there are a lot of ways to score runs. St Louis, which came “a Matheny thousand yard stare” away from the WS, hit like 105 last year (guess, not looking it up but it was close to that)

  13. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on April 2, 2015 at 11:40 am

True. If I remember correctly Stl notably picked up the HR pace in the playoffs which helped them get to the NLCS. Not looking it up either. I more or less agree with you though. With the exception of Panik

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 2, 2015 at 2:44 pm

Do not see it…I think Aoki gets a longer rope than May. Maxwell in LF is intriguing, though. Maxwell’s lifetime MLB stats are not that great, but I read the other day where he has spent lots of time with BamBam going over tapes of his ABs, and has worked on a new hitting approach that they hope adds consistency to his swing.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 2, 2015 at 3:06 pm

I like Maxwell, but no way, no how, does he replace Aoki by May. Hilarious GH. A more likely scenario is him to the bench and then out of MLB a la Hicks last season.

Not this year. I lucked out last year when we signed up for a couple nights in south shore in December and we got there the day right after a big storm in late march. Didn’t get close this year.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 2, 2015 at 5:39 pm

No, it makes perfect sense. Here in Denver (as you know), you’re so close to the action, that you usually make a decision to go to the slopes that week or the day before the trip. In the bay area, my ex and I would usually do the weekend trip, which was booked weeks in advance. However, part of the trip (or if no snow) was to gamble. In the Redding area (Old Shasta, near Whiskey Town lake), it was sort of like the Denver situation, i.e., going to Shasta ski resort was a same day/day before decision. Also, they didn’t have many lodging choices (mostly B&B).

I’ve always hated the Bay Bridge series. I think I went to every home opener from 1986-1997. I never attended a Bay Bridge series and never wanted to. I always felt it would take away from the beauty of opening day. That first moment that you see the fresh, virgin grass, with the red and white bunting draping the stadium, that should never be spoiled by an exhibition. Back in the eighties and early nineties, those games were never televised, so I was never tempted to sneak a peak. I actually feel guilty watching this game.
