A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Not Sweating Colorado Static

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 16, 2015

A buddy of mine who lives in Colorado, Scott Lamm, texted me this yesterday: “Getting tired of my Rockies dominating you guys yet?”

I laughed out loud. I think a text like this would have bothered me pre-2010. But now? I’ll let Scott count regular season wins. I’m busy counting World Series trophies.

So as you can imagine, I’m having a hard time getting too worked up about losing to the Rockies.

Paul (not Asian but living in Asia) made a good point yesterday. What do these guys have to press about? They are world champions. They didn’t become the worst team in the league overnight. You could say they were never the best team and you’d be wrong. If you win it all, you are the best. End of story.

We are in a tough part of our schedule, all the teams we are playing have a better record than us…

Is it time to get our hate on? I thought this was kind of funny.

Fricking hilarious. Yeah, it is early now, but the Cubbies are in 1st place. I ran into a friend at a local watering hole Tuesday and he was telling me about his mom passing, and how they satisfied one of her requests by taking some of her ashes and sprinkling them over the ivy on Wrigley’s OF walls. So, if the Giants tank, I am getting on that Cub bandwagon and asking them to win one of my friend’s mom!

  2. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 16, 2015 at 6:24 am

Not sweating it either. Your friend, along with everyone else in Colorado always get excited about the Rockies in April and May . . . Then around the All Star break, they ask themselves, “WTF happened?” Here’s how it will play out: 1. Pitching will become over-taxed by playing at Coors; 2. Aforementioned situation with starting pitching will cause the bullpen to be worn out by the All Star break; 3. As you saw in this series – the Sherpa position players are not world beaters on the road (although, they did enough to win each of the games against us); and 4. A variety of injuries will occur, partially due to playing at altitude.

Sherpa fans know this blueprint like the back of their hand, albeit, they still “drink the koolaid” like your friend in the early going . . . Then their idyllic stupor ends.

  3. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 16, 2015 at 7:18 am

Well, hate to see bottom feeders outclass SF, especially in their own yard, which the Sherps definitely did. Lack of O made their SPs look better than they are I’m sure, but their position players are not bad.
This wasn’t fluke lucky stuff like when they won 3 games late vs. pen last year. Sherps played better, and
did things that made Giants look bad, like taking advantage of bad throws/errors/wild pitches, squeezing home a run, their C stealing a bag on Lincecum and Sanchez, etc.
Part of being the Champs and having the celebrations is realizing other teams get extra satisfaction out of knocking you down off your high horse, so they are gonna bring extra effort, which has to be matched.

Morneau is still a very good hitter and made nice play to take hit away from Pagan last night.
Arenado won the game last night by himself in the first inning and is excellent fielder.
Dickerson and Blackmon are young guys with potential.
I think they have more going on than just Gonzalez and Tulowitzki.

Time to take out some frustrations on DBax and Giants have plenty of regulars who don’t want to look at the scoreboard and see their numbers; Bum and Peavy either.

  4. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 16, 2015 at 7:53 am

Hey, thx for the Bum pic top right, that’s a classic.
And the cute butt on the BBOTD.

But I’m not counting trophies or rings or anything else except Ws this year–and the Giants have 3 of them so far and 6 Ls in a row. Bask time is over and it’s time to play ball, at least better ball than what’s gone on so far.

Surprised to see Panik in 8 hole yesterday but he didn’t do anything to warrant hitting any higher.
Duffy continues to impress and is gonna force PT somewhere..

Hiya, hope all is well with flappers here, there, and everywhere. I am reading my two new books “Barry Bonds and the making of an antihero” and “seeing the signs”.

I add nothing new when I mention that this is not a dominating everyone and everything type team. Kinda anti-sport fandom, I know. I also note the current discussion thread over on KNBR about whether we need baseball players with braggadocio like basketball has. Adds excitement and emotion for the fans. Get rid of the unwritten rule and let the bat flipping begin. But baseball is a team sport and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

But last night there was one moment that showed how this team plays. Blanco bounced up off third base, looked at the clubhouse and said:”yeah, guys, lets do this!” not “woo-hoo ain’t I grand?” I felt the power of the team working to get going, ready and poised to get going. And when this team gets in sync we will string together some Giants wins. Think Cain with all the one run loses and pitching kept pitching. Think contributions coming from the new guys, the old guys, the bench guys and playing as a team.

    Go Gigantes!

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 16, 2015 at 8:21 am

Good post Ed. The Giants are missing key players at the moment (Cain, Peavy, Pence, McGiggles, and even Belt was out for a few games). Consequently, they are not operating on all cylinders right now.

As you cited, the team plays together and doesn’t point fingers; do the Puig “woo-hoo ain’t I grand?” act; and most important for me – it’s barely frickin’ week 2 of the season. I do get it that the team is horrible to watch right now and everyone not named Aoki, Pagan, and Duffy are at/below the Mendoza line. In any event, I don’t really see anyone running away from us in the division . . . yet.

  6. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on April 16, 2015 at 8:22 am

It sucks to lose the first three home games, but I’m not sweating the goddamn Colorado Rockies. The beauty of baseball is the length of the season. You’ll often hear non-baseball fans bitch that the season is too long, but it’s exactly that which allows all the swings in fortune you see every season. That’s INTERESTING, not boring. You lose the first 2 games in football and your chances of making the playoffs plummet,

This story is still in the first paragraph of the prologue. Let’s see where things stand in September. My guess is that even if the Giants don’t make the playoffs they’ll finish ahead of the Rox.

Panik, Posey, and the two Brandons are OH for their last 52.
Time to get on Posey a little bit. This guy is the team leader, suPoseydly. He shouldn’t be going OH for a series, especially with no names on the mound. Yeah, he doesn’t have a lot of back up, but come on. Time for him to step up and start getting a hit or two. He’s hitting around .210 or something. Unless he’s hurt, criticism is appropriate, he’s even had a light load, playing first base several times. This team misses Morse, I think letting him go was a mistake. With no threat of thump, this lineup has to hit and hit and move the line to score much. And SOS for Timmeh. Wild early, gets in trouble, throws a gopher ball, and it hurts big time. Then, settles down. Looks like Daddy didn’t break that rhythm yet…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on April 16, 2015 at 9:21 am

I don’t think the Morse situation was a possible option. I think Morse wanted to play firstbase somewhere, and the Giants obviously have Belt, so that nixed that.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 16, 2015 at 9:43 am

Hey, every damned player scuffles at some point during the season. So Posey is doing his early…but he certainly has a lot of company. I am sure he more than anyone wants to get it going. I agree with zumiee…Morse wanted more than what the Giants were willing to offer ($$$ nonwitstanding). When our boys get healthy and start playing to their potential, I think things will be fine. And if it is station-to-station ball, with minimal HRs, so be it.

  11. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on April 16, 2015 at 9:29 am

Nice article, Bozo. The author made a great list. I would have the Cards at #2 and the Red Sox at #3, but yeah, those two teams are a tough call. 🙂

  12. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on April 16, 2015 at 9:32 am

Snarkk, I agree about Posey, but I would include Belt, also. We’re all waiting for the Belt break-out season, and it seems to never happen for some reason. Yeah, he’s had bad breaks (literally), but this season seemed primed to be it. And it hasn’t been looking like it so far. But, as others have said today, it’s WAY early.

  13. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on April 16, 2015 at 9:36 am

To put an exclamation point on his non-series against the Dodgers, Cano got picked off thirdbase last night and killed a rally.

Yup. He thought the bases were loaded when it was really second and third. When the batter walked, he started making his way to home plate and got tagged out. Doh!

I just caught-up on last night’s posts. Went to my first Sacramento Republic soccer match. Great venue, fun game. Will definitely be back to check it out. We had seats right at mid-field, 10 rows from the pitch. Good stuff.

In regards to WillieD’s 7:56 last night (canning Hector and bringing up Susac. Susac’s line right now does not look good: .154, .267, .154, .421. A .421 OPS? Fuck, and you thought our boys were scuffling. So, not sure tha swapping out Susac at this point is a good idea.

The only two who are really doing anything in Sac is Duvall: .444, .484, .707, 1.188. 2 HR, 7 RBIs. Damn.

    Ishikawa: .286, .375, .286, .661. 0 HRs, 0 RBIs.

So, there really isn’t much help in Sac.

And I agree with LJ’s 10:26 last night re: a possible swap of Duffy and Panik. Duffy is doing everything he can to stay in the line-up. I really like this kid.

  16. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 16, 2015 at 9:58 am

Blanco triple last night was exciting best shot til duffy’s bomb.. They were playing him in and he crushed one.
Bottom line tho he didn’t score, as Aoki dribbled one and Duffy grounded out too.

Belt and Crawford I think have potential to improve and put up good numbers. I liked moving Craw up he could generate more O and show some pop–same with hitting Belt clean up with Pence out. Hasn’t happened, yet anyway.
Pagan looks great with bat from both sides of plate and is running well on bases too.

  17. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on April 16, 2015 at 10:44 am

Duffy’s shot was a big boy’s home run. I also like his understated home run trot with no home plate hot dogging bullshit. He knew the situation, the G’s were still losing by 2 runs in the 8th, and acted accordingly. It’s pretty clear he can swing the bat and his even keeled approach will serve him well moving forward. With his hitting prowess and defensive versatility, he’s rapidly becoming a valuable part of the team.

Ha, I know. I recently downloaded the Stubhub app and I am addicted to watching ticket prices change as teams play well or suck like we have. It’s like a poor man’s version of the stock market. It really is telling of how fickle fans are. We lose three in a row at home and the dot comers that hold the majority of the best seats are like , ” fuck this, I will take forty bucks and go drink somewhere with a bunch of hot chicks that might get me laid.”

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on April 16, 2015 at 7:50 pm

Which is actually a cool thing. Most season ticket holders in other parts of the country (L.A., Houston, DFW) would rather eat their tickets then sell them to a third party. God forbid, some hard working middle class fan should take their club seat amongst their fellow brethren.

  25. salty's avatar giants54 said, on April 16, 2015 at 5:03 pm

I think Posey’s problems are due in part to not having any protection in the 5-6 spots. Belt was out Mcg now.
Last night it looked like they were pitching around him and he took a few hacks on pitches he might not otherwise have swung at. With Maxwell Hector and Arias to follow, I’m sure the Rocks were not going to let Posey beat them. So tonight they try Duffy.

A lot is often made about the Giants winning as a team, seemingly better than other teams. There is no “I” in Giants (except that there is), etc. What puzzles me (and Bochy, I’m sure) is how good the whole damn team can look at long stretches (last year’s 42-21 start) and then suddenly, with no warning at all, the entire offense just completely forgets how to hit, especially situationally. Even this season so far, microcosmically (am I making words up today?), they looked great taking the 1st series in AZ and the 1st game in SD, and now suddenly, they can’t buy a win. Or sometimes even a run. Yes, every team goes through slumps, and we all seem certain that this is just an early slump and any day now it will end. It often just takes one player to strike the spark, and Bochy has seen this before: he will mix things up until someone finds their niche and gets it going. It’ll be interesting to see just who steps up already.

why do you even pitch to him there?

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on April 16, 2015 at 8:38 pm

At least pitch around him. Loss of concentration?
      This team is so dead.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 16, 2015 at 8:44 pm

Exactly. He cracked a liner that blanco saved from going to the wall for a run scoring double last time up when he tried to pitch him away.
Your choice is Mark Trumbo or Goldschmidt, with a base open.
And then you come into the wheelhouse with one.

Just noticed the “Lon” patches on Giants uni’s. Nice.

Loo commented on the matte finish batting helmets for the D-backs the other day. I actually think it is a good look.

Wilco: If a game starts at 7, and a person lives 15 minutes from an MLB stadium and they feel like going to a game if the price is right, but it won’t break their heart if they don’t actually go to the game, what is the ideal time for that person to get serious about buying some tickets off Stubhub? 5:30? 6:00? I’ve noticed if you wait too long, they go off sale altogether–even if the game is still 20-30 minutes from starting.

Nice double barrel snot-rocket from Bum after serving up the2-out Goldschlager Gopher Ball.

I put in my time and then some…

      • sandog's avatar sandog said, on April 16, 2015 at 8:42 pm

        I fully support the idea!

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on April 16, 2015 at 8:58 pm

It depends on the team. The Astros for instance quit selling on Stubub two hours prior. The Giants I believe are one hour prior. I am not sure of the Padres. Based on my limited “research” Giants fans embrace Stubhub more than any other club. They will sell tickets at the lowest common denominator just to get rid of them, without having to deal with human interaction, I.e. Scalpers.

      • sandog's avatar sandog said, on April 16, 2015 at 9:02 pm

Interesting–thank you. I’ve dabbled a bit in the study of StubHub, but now I’m going to really keep an eye on it. I’d like to go to Pads/Dodgers a week from Saturday and would love to get a bit of a deal on StubHub.

Yeah, I don’t really understand the seeming unwillingness to pitch around “Goldy”. Sheesh, it’s not like the Giants have never witnessed any other teams doing that to their sluggers (Bonds, that is)….

  48. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on April 16, 2015 at 8:45 pm

Shit, with Bumgarner scuffling as much as the offense, the prospect of winning seems pretty low right now. And fucking Goldschmidt has a goddamn career of sticking it to the Giants. Oh, yeah, CB Buckner sucks behind the plate.

    • James's avatar James said, on April 16, 2015 at 8:52 pm

Buckner’s the Willard Brown of MLB umpires.

  49. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on April 16, 2015 at 8:55 pm

Microcosmically is awesome, Paul. Sounds real enough to me. The offense shutting down all at once for long stretches seems like it’s been going on since about 2010. It’s bizarre, like flipping a switch. Getting it flipped back on is a bear.

These last few games…. 4-1, 4-2, 4-1…. when the Giants have the *4*, these games are fun…. not so much currently. Need to start scoring FIRST. Need to turn those scores upside down. Turn that frown, upside down. Ok, now I’m losin’ it….. Back to marking essays and exams, I guess. 🙂
