A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Friday!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 17, 2015

Managed to sleep in till 3:00 this morning. Looks like it rained like hell last night but the course is drying out and we’ve got golf! Who’s with me on starting an Open Blog?

But for those who don’t give a shit about this, we have baseball again. Cain in the desert. I’d like to think we could hit this Ray-guy. Ray Guy. Hell of a punter.

Now, back to my golf……

I remember about ten years ago this weekend, we held a Holdem tournament at my house that ended up finishing around 3 in the morning. After everyone left, I proceeded to watch the entire final round from start to finish. I regretted that on Monday morning.

One of the highlights for me is listening to Peter Alliss when he comes over from the BBC booth. He is the Vin Scully of Golf for you non-golfers. 84 years young and one of golfs great storytellers. I could listen to that voice all day long.

I never graduated from miniature golf, so I’ll pass on the Open, but y’all have fun.

For you flappers jonesing for a bit of baseball, this photo from 1954 should get you even more fired up. Although if you’re a CFer, it might make you think about becoming an Infielder.

I can see why that photo’s part of an African American Heritage series. Terrific pic of Mays and the integrated crowd cheering him on. Reminds me of the opening chapter of Underworld, where a black kid playing hooky in the LF bleachers grabs Bobby Thomson’s HR ball, and holds on even when a white man tries to wrest it away. Monte Irvin hit HR in that game, too, I think.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 17, 2015 at 12:29 pm

If that’s the Polo Grounds, then Mays caught that ball 495′ from home pate. Amazing.

And people scoff at AT&T! That has to be the longest out in history.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 17, 2015 at 12:57 pm

I thought the Polo Grounds had a hitters’ back drop in straightaway CF and no bleachers there. May this shot is Ebbets? http://www.ballparksofbaseball.com/past/PoloGrounds.htm

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 17, 2015 at 12:58 pm

I meant, maybe this shot Bozo shared might be Ebbets.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 17, 2015 at 1:36 pm

yeah, now that I think about it–the NY Giants had “Giants” across their home unis and “New York” across the greys. I believe. Although the great old b/w photo isn’t conclusive on the color.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 17, 2015 at 1:43 pm

I’m not sure where the shot was taken. I got it from the African Heritage City FB site. They do credit the photo to Charles Hoff/NY Daily News, I don’t think it’s the Polo Grounds so Xoot might be right about Ebbets field.
No matter, that is just one hell of a catch.

Golf. At 3 A.M. Only in my wildest nightmare. Bring on some baseball. Interesting shuffle on the rotation by Boch. The two main driving points were keeping Peavy and Hudson apart, as their games are so similar, and giving Madison a few extra days of rest.

Hoping to see The Horse pitch a gem tonight. Let’s get the 2nd half off on a good foot.

Excellent MLB dot com evaluation of the Giants first half and what’s needed for us to return to the World Series. Not ragging on Belt, but what Chi, Flavor and I have said about Belt’s lack of consistency, has credence (as this report indicates). Yeah, he has been “adequate,” but Belt is a big key for us in the 2nd half and he needs to be more consistent.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 17, 2015 at 8:11 am

Hey, take it easy on Belt. He IS consistent. Consistently inconsistent! 😉

    • James's avatar James said, on July 17, 2015 at 8:14 am

Why not just say Belt needs or you want him to be better than an 833 OPS hitter? The “inconsistency” label is usually just code for some subjective displeasure with a player that has nothing to do with his actual contribution.

      • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 17, 2015 at 8:22 am

He needs to stop slumping his shoulders. Then he will seem more consistent.

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 17, 2015 at 8:24 am

Tell it to Chris Haft. He seems to agree with blade and chi on the matter. His fancy numbers need to translate into include more runs driven in, not just total bases and walks.

      • James's avatar James said, on July 17, 2015 at 8:42 am

John, re-read what I’m saying. If you think he needs to do better in some area, have at it. I think you’re wrong about that, but no matter. My objection is to the adjective.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 17, 2015 at 8:57 am

Think what you want, James…we all have our opinions. I think he is inconsistent. My opinion. And when talking individual opinions…they are ALL subjective.

Lifetime OPS is .799. Doesn’t matter…he “averages,” over his career, 17 HRs and 66 RBIs a year (and if this translates to a higher OPS, the okay…I want Belt to increase his OPS). Happy? As I said, I would like to see the RBI total go up, and the HRs, too. But if he hit 15 or so bombs and drove in 80 RBIs, I can live with that.

  7. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 17, 2015 at 8:53 am

“Adequate” must have hurt Belt haters to actually admit even that.
    Haft really is haft baked.
James is right: what is it the haters want? 30 HRs/100 rbis? Aint happening at ATT for LH not named Bonds.
If that is your be all end all, for 1b, good luck finding someone to put up Willie Mac (HOF) numbers.
Don’t forget that Belt is making a fraction of what AGon Votto and Golds are making. And that Golds happens to be one of the best players in all of baseball.

Rbis, lol. OPS happen to be single most determinant factor for how many runs a team scores, much more than rbis. So individuals with high numbers in that category are doing a lot to help their team score runs, pretty imp if you want win games. Like others on SF, Belt also adds quality D when he is at 1b.

Consistency? Pls, ALL hitters have ups and downs. Crawford hit .217 month of June. Pagan got off to great start and immediately cratered. Posey finished last year hitting .390 in Sept and Pence Sando et al had crummy months at either start or end of last season–when oh by the way they won it all. Irrelevant.
Susac had a great June and then went 2-26 before Sunday.

Relax and enjoy baseball…Giants are who they are, “warts and all” as Twin eloquently put it.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 17, 2015 at 1:44 pm

Yes, 30 HR’s and 100 RBI would be outstanding. So would 20-25 and 80. He’ll be hard-pressed to come anywhere near those figures this year. He’s right on pace for his career averages. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect numbers like that from Belt. OPS numbers can be inflated by taking a good amount of walks and hitting with no one on. I don’t hate Belt at all, I just expect more from him. I’m pretty sure the Giants do too. Matt Duffy is kicking his ass right now in his first full year.

Willie, it’s condescending to make comments like “all hitters have ups and downs” to a community full of hard-core baseball fans. Irrelevant? We’ll have to agree to disagree on that one.

If Belt comes back and has a great “second half” I’ll be the first one to praise him and eat crow. It’s not about hating, it’s about rightly expecting the most from guys who have the most to give.

time to check the goals at the break:

play around .500 – 46-43 three games over. check

Stay close to the leader – 4.5 back. check

get hot – most of the injured players have returned or are returning. Cain looking decent and could be really good. Peavy looking not bad, Pence needs to make sure he doesn’t reinjure that wrist. but all the ingredients to get hot and a brutal august schedule could really make or break that.

get in – TBD but knocking on the door. the division far from settled and in good shape for a WC.

    get deep – TBD

all in all, a very optimal start with nothing really glaring. yes, potential problems with the BP, maybe the starters aren’t overall good enough, maybe the hitting isn’t going to be good enough but I don’t think you can look at the team as currently constructed and say, “they can’t do it” or “it would take a miracle”. they really just need to perform to capability. You add a chapman or parra to the mix and they look pretty damn solid.

so we’ll see. which is really what I want. a chance. a reason to watch every game. something to engage me for the next 3 months. It’s good to be us.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 17, 2015 at 11:22 am

Willie, Belt overcame a slow April to have a solid first half. No doubt about that. What Haft and others are saying basically, is maintain what he is doing now throughout the entire season . . . especially during the playoff drive of September.

To say anyone “hates” Belt or anyone else is not true. Also, when you indicate Haft is “haft baked,” then it follows that you think all Flappers whom disagree with you are half (or haft) baked as well. Your opinion is just as valid as mine, Chi’s or anyone else here. More important, the argument that Belt has something to prove . . . Just as your argument, that Belt is playing outstanding baseball – are both valid points. Neither point can be unequivocally disproved (although, you, James, Chi, myself, or someone else can try).

    🙂

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 17, 2015 at 11:24 am

Well put, Blade. I agree whole-heartedly. Now fucking trade Belt! JK. 😉

  10. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:25 am

I don’t feel like diving head first into the whole Belt argument and I wish he would hit better with two strikes, but I’ve come to really like the guy.
All those years batting 6th probably didn’t help his career RBI totals but I think batting 5th will be good for him stat wise. I also think not playing LF would help his numbers a whole bunch (2015 OPS – 1B .877, LF .499, career – 1B .814, LF .662).
His career Home and Away splits for extra base hits really does show how the Park changes him from a HR guy to a Double/Triple guy, but still the total EBHs is pretty even.

    Home – 2B 58, 3B 10, HR 17, total EBH 85
    Away – 2B 46, 3B 4, HR 37, total EBH 87

So while we have him, I say bat him 5th, don’t play him in the OF (unless there isn’t anyone else) and watch those size 15 clown shoes speed around the bases at Pac Bell (he can just lope around the bases at the other fields).

There’s a lot to like about Belt, but I ‘d like to see him become “scarier” to the other teams. Pence and Posey will get better pitches then. I think teams still don ‘t mind pitching to Belt, in general. Sometimes they go right at him with fastballs and strike him out on pitches that seem pretty fat. It’s a chain-reaction thing: scarier Belt means better things for Posey and Pence, too. Belt looks scary in brief streaks; that’s the need for consistency.

    Good news! Per Rotowire . . .

UPDATE: Aoki (leg) will run and take batting practice Thursday for the first time since being placed on the disabled list, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.

ANALYSIS: Aoki still remains without a timetable, but the combination of Thursday’s on-field work and Saturday’s scheduled CT scan should give owners a clearer picture of a potential return date. Manager Bruce Bochy told reporters that Aoki made good progress over the break as well, but it will likely be a few days before the Giants provide a more definitive timetable for Aoki’s return to action.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 17, 2015 at 11:27 am

Aoki’s been solid all-year and provided many a spark, while sputtering Pagan has not.
But fortunately for you, he will con Boch into keep playing ,and you’ll win your bet with Kevin😀

AK, Pagan has picked it up in his last 3 games, going 7 for 15, 4 RBI, 4 Runs, and 2 doubles.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 17, 2015 at 11:50 am

I don’t know, blade. Seems like Pagan has been inconsistent this year. 🙂

If you look at his splits, Pagan has typically started and ended strong with dips in May and June. He’s under performed in July this year but as you say I think he is starting to pick it up. I’ve been more worried about his defense. He’s never been a good route runner but he’s just looked really bad at times.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 17, 2015 at 12:13 pm

Absolutely Dirt. I should have added, that Pagan will need to continue his mini hitting streak into the 2nd half. All hands are going to be needed or forget about the playoffs, much less the World Series. In fact, David Schoenfield of ESPN is correct when he says this about the Giants chances in the 2nd half:

“Prediction: The advantage the Giants have over the Cubs is that the Cubs have to play both the Cardinals and Pirates (21 more games against those two clubs), while the Giants have just the Dodgers in their own division (nine games remaining). On the other hand, the Giants are just 13-19 against the Diamondbacks, Rockies and Padres. If the Giants get just a little more from their rotation, they’ll be back in the wild-card game, with a possible rematch against the Pirates. For what it’s worth, FanGraphs likes the Cubs a lot more: 58 percent chance to win a wild card versus 17 percent for the Giants.”

      • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 17, 2015 at 12:28 pm

I think the club is going to be hard pressed to get into the post season. That said, the best route is taking the division which is totally doable imo. Play winning baseball, apply pressure in the standings and watch the dodgers fold.

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 17, 2015 at 12:43 pm

Well, all the Giants need to do is beat the teams they should beat. All this talk of averages is just that. Talk. The bats do go dormant for long stretches. As we saw on that recent roadie. And they get hot at times. That’s why they call them averages. Does that define inconsistency? I’ll leave that to James. but I think it does. Yeah we have injuries, but mainly the problem is losing to shitty teams like AZ, Colo and even the Marlins. Those teams suck for a reason, but we can’t seem to capitalize. Glad to see us murder the Phils, but they have to keep that shit up and not lag against the bad teams.

I’m sick and tired of all the ‘we suck against team x in ballpark x.’ Go beat the teams that are also-rans already. We have the D-Bags, the A’s, the Pads, the Rangers among the next bunch of teams. Time to get on a roll. After that, we have a raft of tough teams. Time to make hay now.

And I also stand by my contention that numbers don’t tell the whole tale. There are lies, there are damned lies, and there are statistics. Being a corner infielder is a position that should have solid production. Belt is close. But he is the model of inconsistency.

    Any work on Aoki?

Of course if the 49ers beat the lowlife teams often enough last year even with all their turmoil they would have been in the playoffs.

Sure and Bochy will go to the Hall of Fame. But i still do not care for his treatment of Belt. Tonight, the dude bats 7th ~in front of Maxwell and Cain. He should be hitting 3rd. His OPS is considerably higher than that of Duffy ~ though the Duffster is ahead of him in RBI’s. Logic will tell ya that you want high OBP guys in the top of the lineup and your better RBI men deeper down. Compare the stats between the two of them. #9’s forte is getting on base and XBH’s. He’s not the power guy they tried to make him into ~ at least not in Phonebill park.

Personally, my take is that this mistreatment of Belt will make him a quiet candidate for a trade. Would hate to see that unless the payback is HUGE. In a park like Houston or Cincinnati he could easily become a 35 HR, 110 RBI man ~ even batting in the 3-hole. Somehow Bochy is hung up on his inconsistency. Perhaps the inconsistency has something to do with the way he has been treated.

      Like maybe even this year.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:19 pm

He’s got a flat swing, and a good eye. Patient. That spells hitter. Wade Boggsish?…

    • Lisle Ellis's avatar Lisle Ellis said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:21 pm

Yes Zum, I’m one of the proponents of that school of thought.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:26 pm

Yeah I mentioned Panik and batting titles before and the Wade Boggs approach, and that he never gives up an AB, which the greats never do.He will a few before it all said and done.

It’s hard to be confident about Cain making big progress. He looked good against the Mets, but they have a terrible offense.

    Pence — OVER the Fence~!…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:21 pm

Add Pence to the hitting clinic!

Man, what a live yard this ballpark is.

    Hunter Pence smoking the Bomb!!
    Nice comeback Giants!!!

  39. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:29 pm

I was going to say now is when the Giants Pen needs to suck it up. But, Pagan is clearly laboring. Why not just DL the guy. WTF is wrong with his knees — they keep saying they’re bad. WTF is wrong with them?…

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:38 pm

WTF was Peralta doing, thank you very much, that was the worse base running I’ve seen since that Giant ( I cant remember his name) was on Jon Miller’s laughable call.

Just got in, so I didn’t see how Cain got hit hard? Or not? But since I heard the dreaded word Machi pitched that just adds more fuel to the fire, guess we’re lucky to survive that.
Freakin Pagan sucks going after balls anymore!!!!!

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:38 pm

Bunch of hard hit balls to the OF, over Pagan’s head, one HR, early on. He settled later, but threw a lot of pitches…

    More little league base running…

  42. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:40 pm

Osich can bring the heat, that’s for sure. I’d leave Osich in…

  43. Lisle Ellis's avatar Lisle Ellis said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:41 pm

I’ve said it before … I think there are great things in store for Panik & Duffy with this team; possibly, the stuff of legend. Just think, two players, simultaneously arrive outta the blue, that none thought would amount to much of anything … et voila, quelle surprise! We may not attain 4 in 6 but we may have an unforeseen consolation prize of immense proportions.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:47 pm

I would say the doubt was more for Duffy. Panik was a first round pick, and I think a lot of folks recognized the potential. Duffy was the bigger surprise.

      • Lisle Ellis's avatar Lisle Ellis said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:20 pm

Yes, agreed … Yet, Panik was hardly considered a legit heir apparent to Scutaro … I seem to remember most prognosticators figuring him to still need much more lower level seasoning.

  44. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:46 pm

  45. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:46 pm

Well now, that’s nice to have some Strickland heat. If he can keep that clutch pitching going, he’s got a chance to make a name for himself up in the Bigs…

  46. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:47 pm

Nice from Osich and Strickland. The future is now.

  47. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:48 pm

We got a little heat of our own out there.
And the Chapman talk around here is nonsense.
We have nothing to give them (that we would part with).

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:50 pm

  48. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:49 pm

I don’t know that Peralta’s baserunning was totally terrible. Doesn’t he have an obligation to keep the double-play from happening? His job is to distract, at least, but he did blow it by getting caught off the base.

  49. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 17, 2015 at 9:58 pm

Srickland&Chapman and blow them away! Turn the Bat signal on Sabes/Evans!!

  50. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:06 pm

The Mighty O-O-O is not a viable late-in-the-game pinch-hitter. That’s not going to work.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:21 pm

after seeing CUs and FBs and being ready for either, he was on it. He can hit. Meanwhile, Romo mows down to RHs as usual, but gets a LH too.

  52. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:13 pm

Zumie,He’s on 3rd base with no outs. You don’t make the 1st out at 3rd period, And it looked like it was hit to slow to turn 2 as well. Crawdad just suckered Peralta into an out,And I’m pretty sure he will pay a fine in kangaroo court,Imo.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:15 pm

I disagree regarding the double-play. If he stays on third, they can turn two, IMO.

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:27 pm

        We can agree to disagree.
But let’s just say they turn 2, it still better to have a runner at 3rd with 2 outs then the bases empty, cause he was so dumb, maybe he stays at 3rd while their even turning 2..

  53. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:21 pm

Yeah Ruben Rivera, nice work Loo.Still hilarious!

  60. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:47 pm

    Wow. Gutsy play by Crawfish.

  61. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:48 pm

    A fail by Belt.

  62. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 17, 2015 at 10:55 pm

You cannot leave a leadoff double out there without scoring in extras. That’s pathetic, all three hitters after. Belt has to move Crawford to third, even a bunt will do. Giants suck at these situations, and Bochy let’s it happen. Can’t Belt bunt? If he can, then Blanco’s roll over probably scores Craw, or maybe gets through a drawn in infield…

  63. Lisle Ellis's avatar Lisle Ellis said, on July 17, 2015 at 11:09 pm

Why do we suck so bad at this. Wtf?

  64. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 17, 2015 at 11:09 pm

Such a smart player is Panik.
He knows the situation obviously better then Belt and gets the runner over..

  65. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 17, 2015 at 11:11 pm

Their crazy if they even pitch to Posey,.,

  66. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 17, 2015 at 11:11 pm

OK, Panik gets the bunt down to move Pagan to third, then Duffy suddenly can’t even make contact, and takes a called strike 3 down the middle. WTF? Come on Buster. Let’s get this done. How many innings are we going to waste a leadoff double?… Come on Giants…

  67. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 17, 2015 at 11:15 pm
