Here’s a lame stat to choke on while you’re eating breakfast this morning:
Only Duffy and Crawford have more HR’s at AT&T this year (7 each) than Nolan Arenado (6 in 7 games). That stat goes out to everyone who says it’s really, really hard to hit home runs at AT&T…
So where are we with Hesto Presto? Because I’m starting to think that the more expensive version of him (Leake) would be the better route to take next year. I’m kidding. Sort of.
Still can’t believe Duffy won the WM Award. And that Loo called it. 35 years, no rookies win the award. What must that say about how his teammates view him? The Duffman is a keeper……

I was at the game tonight, early. Pretty good turnout for the Willie Mac Award ceremony, maybe 50% of the stands full. And Willie’s proud announcement of Duffy’s name sparked a genuine roar of approval. A bit of surprise and a lot of respect fueled that roar. We stood cheering for a long time.
A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball 
Thing about Heston (last night anyway) was that Rox were aggressive early in count. First inning he got them out in 7 pitches. Then Arenado’s bomb was on first pitch too. You’re talking about a rook pitcher with a rook C who has never seen these guys.
As for the yard, RH guys with pop can do damage when it isn’t windy. Williamson smoked one 400 plus to RCF when he had the triple. If he’d pulled that it goes out easy.
But they showed a clip of Posey hitting an HR at Coors to RCF, something he can’t do at ATT. There was a post I saw on Baggs site from a guy who said that if you move Posey to 1b he hits .350 with 30 bombs.
Which I think is ridiculous. Like Kuip said, he’ll feel a lot better physically and can play more often, but I don’t see numbers going up much more than what he has done this year for avg and slugging. 25 HRs tops.
Another funny thing about HRs: 2010 when Giants were 6th in league for HRs they were actually only 9th for runs scored and 9th for OB.
This year, 12th HRs but tops in NL for hits BA OB and slugging.
4th in OPS, 4th in doubles 5th in triples and 5th in runs scored.
So a lot more matters than just hitting HRs is my take, at any position.
Never having previously pitched through September, Heston has been running on fumes for a month or more. Strength and conditioning will become his mantra. Without him the Giants would have been very lucky to finish 4th in the Division. Whether he begins in the rotation come April or cools his heels at Sac-town, Heston will start for the Giants next season, particularly if he builds his stamina.
If you threw out Leake’s best start (with LA full party mode night before after clinching vs. Bum) and his worst one, he seems more like a back end of rotation guy. Innings eater tho, pitches to contact, and Giants D behind him should be pretty good. Hopefully more reasonable $$ and years.
Samardzj didn’t do all that well for A’s last year after trade, and had a very bad stretch for WhiteSox before his last 2 starts.
J Zim ERA of 3.66, less than ace like. Probably a lot of teams after this guy (as opposed to Greinke Cueto Price) that drive up bidding.
Pavs seems to think SF gets Leake but not anyone more elite.
The team with the best record automatically playing the Wild Card winner gave the Cards a tougher seeding than the Dodgers.
Sandoval never made it back this season after his bout with pneumonia. You don’t often hear of ballplayers getting pneumonia.
Somebody that’s carrying way too much weight is susceptible to diseases that normally are no big deal running amock in their body. Cue Panda. Giants so fortunate he left. Sad to say, but I don’t think it over the top to say he’s a disgrace to himself and his teammates. Where’s the pride? If I had been given his baseball gifts I wouldn’t be wasting them. Duffy is now a fixture at 3rd. Bochy should give him more off days next year, assuming fewer team injuries, so I’m expecting the Duffman to hit 15-18 fingers…

Xoot, I do think that was posted at some point, but it’s good to read it again. I particularly like where “the old vet” Duffy is talking to Specs, who had just been called up, and relays what Pence had said to him some months before about the team needing him. Damn, wish this team had stayed healthy enough to make the post-season; this is truly one very likeable group of players. I’m already looking forward to next year.

I’m good with ceremony and tradition in baseball. Part of why I love the game. But, seriously, this sendoff to Huddy to me is a bit much for a guy not really other than a transient Giant. I suppose it’s a career celebration deal, but it’s like the guy pitched for the Giants for 15 seasons, not 1 1/2. If he went to the HOF, he’s not going in as a Giant, it’s as a Brave, or even a “A”. In 53 starts, he went 17-22 with the Gyros, with a WHIP around 1.30. He was a best bud to Bum, so I guess for that he earned a few of his $24 million. Let the Braves give him a proper “day”, that’s where he really made his career after a good start with the A’s. Affeldt’s day tomorrow, he deserves a good sendoff — one of the best records in MLB post-season history for a lefty reliever..
totally agree. It’s weird. Did they do this for Randy Johnson? I know he only pitched a season for us but Huddy didn’t do that much more and Johnson had a far more productive career…..

he doesn’t look like he’s in spectacular shape, there was definitely som tit bounceage on the richt-it scale underneath that uni during the homerun trot. I’d put that at a 3.2 richt-it quake, not a big one but noticeable if you were awake. But for whatever reason, he seems strong and reliable. I want him back too.
Yeah, he’s got some late 30’s bulge, but hopefully won’t be nearing Bengielena 50 DDD territory. But, that swing looked smooth, he went with a ball high in the zone and outside, and the ball jumped out to center. He’s a pro hitter — and if makes contact, the ball moves, and as a vet, isn’t afraid of a clutch moment. Miller said the ball’s not really carrying that well today. If he craps out or gets hurt next season, the financial hit won’t be devastating. I don’t see any dependable OF RH pop elsewhere in this organization to add to Pence. Mac Williamson is nothing but an unknown, tho’ looks like he might have promise. Giants need some OF pop threat from R side of the plate to platoon and for PH…

The way I figure it, if the Angels beat the Rangers tomorrow, the Astros will be playing an extra game one way or another: Either they win Sunday and tie the Rangers to force 1-game playoff to determine division title, or they lose Sunday and tie the Angels to force 1-game playoff for one of the wild card spots. BTW, what a gag job by the Rangers, blowing a 4-run lead in the 9th with the division title 3 outs away.

Yeah, for a meaningless game to close out a weird season, the inside the park home run was spectacular. It was a true no-one-misplayed-or-fucked-up-and-kicked-the-ball-around inside the parker. Tomlinson just hit it to the deepest corner of the yard and ran like a mofo. The crowd (place was packed due to the Star Wars connection) went nuts. Fun fun fun shit. Byrd and Crawfish yarding as well. All in all, good shit. Plus I got a pic with Darth Vader. He was shorter in real life than in the movies . . .
And yeah, another Huddy tribute. Odd to say the least. The good news is it delayed the game enough for us to sit down and see the HRs in the 1st.

If I’m an Astros fan, I’m rooting for the Rangers to beat the Angels and win the division. Why? Because no matter how this shakes out today, the Astros will end up playing some kind of play-in game. If they tie the Rangers, they could lose the game to determine the AL West champ and fall back into the wild card, which means the Astros will end up playing two extra games. Plus there’s no home field edge for the AL West champ in the ALDS anyway. And the last thing the Astros want after today is to fall back into a tie with the Angels for a play-in wild card game. My best-case scenario for Houston is this: Win today, hope the Rangers win and Yanks lose, and the Astros get a WC game at home vs. Yanks with I would guess Keuchel on the mound.

Makes zero sense to chance having to play two games to get into LDS versus just one (possibly at home) all because you want the Division crown…Yes, Kecuhel is scheuled to pitch on Tuesday. If they have to play tomorrow it would either be Fiers or Kazmir (who has been attrocious since the trade).
Baggarly said this morning with Marty Lurie that he thinks it unlikely Giants bring Byrd back. IHO, they’d need to do some 2 year deal to make up for not giving him the ABs to vest his option for next year. He was really pretty sure of it. I hope he’s wrong. IMO, if they don’t bring Byrd back, they better have a darn good alternative RHd bat with pop off bench/platoon. They’ve got to have stronger bench next season. It looks like they will, but not necessarily bench pop. That’s needed. The FIRST pinch hit HR this season was in September with Parker. No more equivalents of linguini bats like bellman Arias, 000, Noonan, Perez, and other AAAA bench jockeys who give you nada other than a name on the LU card. The NL for the foreseeable future is going to be a bear — Cards, Mets, Bucs, Cubs, LA, and Braves probably will be back in the mix, plus I don’t think we can count on Ariz and Pads continually being dogmeat. You’re not going to get into a WC situation with 85 wins. Either win the div, or you’ve got to win 90+…
Byrd did fine for us but I don’t want him back. Yesterday’s HR was his first in 5 weeks.
At this point in his career I don’t think he has an upside as a National League starting outfielder.

That’s harsh, but maybe realistic. Byrd impressed me with his hustle and intensity and apparent intelligence. He still plays a good game for an old guy. Great late second half move from Sabean, but that may be it.
This team needs HR power. We can argue on the Flap all day long amongst ourselves about “the conga line” and how the offense this year scored runs near the top of the league team stats. But, the deal is if there is a slump in a few of these singles and doubles guys throughout the season, and there will be, the conga line shuts, and run production craters. The more guys you have that can drive in 2 or 3 with one swing, the more you can avoid these multiple friggin’ 5-8 game losing streaks that were suffered this year, that really can’t happen more than once if you’re serious about trying to get to 90 wins…
The one Byrd moment that won’t go away–swinging over a Kershaw slider to strike out in that swept series. Buster in the AB before managed to lay off or foul that pitch away several times. Byrd had no chance. 9th inning, if I recall correctly.
Well, Kershaw only struck out 293 other guys this year…

Totally agree. Two of the best teams in ball, and it comes down to which ace does better in 2 hours. If it’s game 7 of the WS, it’s great theater. I think Williamson has no shot for the 25 next season out of ST. Needs more ABs, less than 1200 in the minors. Missed an entire season with the TJ surgery. He’s 25 though, so he needs to get started in the bigs pretty soon, or it ain’t happening…
Once upon a time, if I remember correctly, final won-loss record determined home field advantage. And, again, only if I remember correctly, that sucked in ’97, when the wildcard Marlins hosted the division winning Giants in the NLDS and beat the G’s. This year, if they went by record (as I think they do in hockey.. basketball too?, not sure), the Mets and Dodgers would do the one-game play-in, while the Cards, Bucs, and Cubs awaited the winner of that play-in game. So, how should it be? Won-loss record, or division winners hosting a wildcard team even if the W.C. team had a much better record? In ’97, I was absolutely opposed to the former, but this year, I’d love to see the Bucs and Cubs not have to do the play-in, and let the Mets and Dogs fight it out just to get to the dance…. 🙂
I’d keep everything the same and just make the Wild Card thing 2 out of 3. I don’t think it would delay things that much. The NLDS isn’t starting until Friday this year anyway. The Wild Card teams don’t need a bunch of days off. They should just be thrilled to be in the playoffs.
They could have started the Wild Card 2 out of 3, tomorrow.
Another thing about playoffs—-regular season is not going to be shortened. If TV gets their way (and who is going to stop them?) you’ll be watching the World Series during Thanksgiving dinner.

Well, my 1:33 wasn’t really about scheduling, but rather rewarding the best teams by won-loss record at the end of 162 games. This year, that would be the 3 Central Division teams, letting the Mets and Dogs fight it out to make the NLDS. Maybe I’m just liking that concept this year because I like both the Bucs and the Cubs and dislike both the Mets and the Dogs… 🙂

Well, this game is getting a little tedious, since it’s just meaningless now, and the Giants Pen is in full meltdown.
I’ve enjoyed this season, for the most part.
Good play in the first half, despite some predictable (except apparently to Sabevans) cratering/injuries by an aging rotation. The squad could not overcome a sucky rotation, and an unreal number of injuries to top players. Can’t blame players for the injury bug, but management was caught again with its pants down fielding a terribly weak bench. 000 starting for games on end was just unacceptable. The Cards had many injuries, yet they’re heading for the NLDS.
The bright spots in a non-playoff year are the emergence of Duffy and Tomlinson, and the no-hitter by Heston. I dunno if Heston is the real deal, he dropped off so much after July. The guy needs to strengthen that arm somehow for an entire season of work. Adios to the season…

He did almost win a Super Bowl, but fell off a cliff after that. His limitations in throwing the ball have gotten exposed. And now their offensive line is bad, so he’s got defenders in his face all the time.

A Cubs minor leaguer, and the Cubs made the playoffs. Worked out rather nicely for them.
Having said that, I have some friends who are Cubs fans, and I’ll be pulling for the Cubs over the Pirates. 106 years is a heck of a long drought.
Plus, I think the Cubs have the best chance of the other teams to knock out the Dodgers in the NL. If the Cubs can survive that weird one-game playoff, I think they can handle the Cards. And I think Madden will do a Bochy on Matheny and Two-trips.

The Dodgers got to show off their depth during September; but now, interesting decisions have to be made. Who makes their playoff roster? There’s going to be some butt-hurt Dodgers. Guys who made, in their opinions, significant contributions, who get left off the roster.
And fans who have been floating fancy free, some for months, with their teams in solid control of playoff spots, now get the stress of playoff games. Sphincters are tightening.

I want to say it’s amazing how far the NIners have fallen, the steep decline of Kaep, etc. But it’s really not. Jed ditches Harbs and sells us on Sweatsula, half the team retires or gets released for too many run ins with the law, it’s not hard to see this coming. I’m a little surprised with how god awful Kaep has become with his accuracy, but maybe his confidence is just so completely blown he’s broken.
Keep losing and bring me Goff and Lawler. I’ll take my chances with those 2 in an obvious re-build time……

They were something like 34-14 with Pence in the LU. Had he been in the LU all season, they might have been leading the division by 5 or 6 games by late August, even with the crap rotation…
Well at that pace they would have gone 115-47 if Pence played every game. I know that’s not what you’re saying, but so much other shit went wrong.

what exactly is majorly wrong with Pence right now? Back? or Wrist? I’ve seen quick shots of him in the dugout this month, he looks yoked and ready to go.
He’s probably OK now. Just no reason to play him the last 10 games, and risk making that oblique into some sort of chronic deal ready to blow during any season when he takes those wicked cuts. One thing I would do with him, and this means getting better bench OFers, is not play him every friggin game. When he says he wants to play for 15 straight, tell him to F off, and sit down. Same with the other guys. Get a bench that can give the regular players a day off. Crawford, Panik are in that group. Posey gets days off, why not the others — help prevent fatigue and injury…
Giants led the NL in batting (.267) for first time since ’93. I don’t really keep track of team stats, certainly not batting average, so this surprised me. What does this say about overall quality of batting in the NL? Or looked at another way, what does this say about our hitters?
