A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Giants Offense Diagnosed with Koro

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 11, 2016

Maybe that’s a little rough but I’m a damn Dr. and that’s my diagnosis.

And sorry, I refuse to believe that the absence of Angel Pagan has led to this limp offense. Because if true, we are in huge trouble this year. Crazy Horse and his slap hitting ways is not the path to a successful offense.

The culprits are littered up and down the line up with Posey being the usual worst offender. Like it or not, he gets paid coin for a reason. He can’t just be good when everyone else is good. Maybe it’s tough for him to get any rhythm going with all the rest he’s forced to take…..

After getting shut down by 2 middling AL starters we get our shot at a 3rd today. Maybe Bum just says “fuck ya’ll” and just does it himself…….

If you were surprised to learn Posey was hitting .330 last week, how does .275 make you feel?
Parker has the plate discipline of Hacktor. Last night he K’d swinging at stuff in the dirt those last 2 times up.
Makes you wonder what he learned at AAA and if he is capable of adjusting, or not.

Cain held them down too and that’s 2 acceptable performances from back end, tho Law made things worse.
Anyone surprised Lincecum hasn’t been picked up yet by someone?

Obviously, muting K and K to listen to Sonny boy Williamson mix on youtube didn’t help…but tunes were great, .
Hard to beat a song titled, “Fattening Frogs for Snakes.”

Sonny Boy Williamson is one of many in a long list of great American blues artist (and in this case, harp player). I have a very diverse taste for music, but the blues has always been one of the genres that resonates with deeply with me.

When you just get six hits and Specs gets three of them, you probably won’t get many runs (though they should have had a couple). The story for me was Cain, his pitches looked good. He looked to me like he was throwing free and easy and not forcing his pitches. Eight innings, if he can start going long in games that would be huge for us.

DSpan pisses me off. He’s doing nothing for the team at this point but offering defense.

He’s had more opportunities to do things at the top of the order, esp when Pagan was getting on, than just about anyone else.

And yeah everyone saw the Pagan deal from 5 miles away. He’s day-to-day for a month and a half. No use filling his spot with someone else. Might hurt his feelings.

  5. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2016 at 7:49 am

Screw that about butt hurting Pagan’s feelings Chuck, this isn’t the 1st year he’s been hurt and they don’t DL his ass…
As far as Cain, yes it was a promising performance last night however I need to see him do again against a NL team. When he’s facing a team he never faces and they don’t know him he has an advantage. And yet the guy that does know him well Tulo(NL player)raked him so I’m not sure that this start meant to much until he gets the NL hitters out consistently..

  6. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 11, 2016 at 7:49 am

Krukow this morning…Jesus I finally had to just turn him off. He started off reminding us of his “Comeback Player of the Year” call he made on Cain in the Spring. I would think he would want to bury that prediction not trot it out there after one good start. Then he follows that up by saying “What Cain did last night, I think he could do that for another FIVE OR SIX YEARS.”
I mean come on. What’s the point of having a paid analyst if he’s going to say stupid shit like that.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 11, 2016 at 8:19 am

listening to music vids instead of K and K is actually pretty enjoyable as is Amy G without sound.
And you get the same crowd shots, including our own Big Game James.

Kruk imo is at his best talking about setting up hitters, as if he were still on the mound and thinking about how he’d get a hitter out.
Kuiper, best at talking about middle IF play I guess but idk. He does have funny stories about playing days. I think his best one he’s playing 2b and pitcher just hit Kirk Gibson in the neck. Gibson’s on 1b and seething and next hitter grounds a DP ball to SS…Kruk sotto voce says, “oh that’s not good” and Kuip explodes, “NO!”

1 run in 27 innings? Fuck. Cain has one nice outing, but 0-5 does not make for a comeback player award.

Looked up Koro. . . WTF?

  9. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 11, 2016 at 8:05 am

Well, I agree, Pagan is not going to turn things around on his own, but like it or not, the guy seems to bring good energy to the club when he is in there. And I am not going to second guess Bochy and the Giants questionable medicos on whether or not he should be DL’d Fuck that…those guys know what the fuck they are doing (well, at least Bochy does).

And I get it. I am as frustrated as any of you, but pissing and moaning does not change a damned thing. Teams go through rough periods with both pitching and hitting. It sucks that our team has been scuffling on both fronts (well, pithing-wise, the back-end of the rotation). We are a game out, only one below .500. Given the level of sucktitude on this team of late, I will take it, and look for better days.

Cain looked good (what I watched). I have been tired as hell watching these Warrior, Sharks and Giant games late into the night (yeah, no pity from you guys on the right coast) and I get up at 5 to get ready for work, so my ass hit the rack early last night. I did listen to the Giants on my Walkman until the 7th, and finally pulled the plug. Genius move on my part.

Wash that shit off and get ’em today!

Warriors close it out tonight! How about the Thunder taking down the Spurs, in San Antone…wow. Bring on whoever!

Not too worried about the offense scuffling at game #35. Glad to see Cain having a good start where he went 8 innings finally – after what was it? 2013, I think someone said last night.

I have a hard time believing that the Snakes will continue their winning ways (5 in a row). Also, if you look at our RS stat, we are second in the division after Colorado, separated by 6 runs. Big deal. If we are going to struggle, it’s nice that the Bums are not doing much better.

Like to know who set Span’s stance up like that, with his front foot turned way in like some stripper babe in strappy heeled sandals.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 11, 2016 at 9:23 am

Yeah, it’s an odd stance, because when he pulls the foot in, it looks like he’s hitting flat-footed, with very little lower body in his swing.
I thought he was going to get off to a terrific start, but it hasn’t happened. He was hitting line-shots all during Spring Training. He seemed in a groove. But facing better pitching has made him look meh.
Posey’s timing is off on his swing. He’s pounding a lot of hard grounders at thirdbase, which is way off his good stroke, which is hitting towards the middle of the field. He needs to let the ball get deeper. He has a leg kick when he swings, so he needs to spend time in the batting cage to get his timing back, which I’m sure he’s doing. As others have suggested, it’s possible the foul ball off his foot injured him more than they’re letting on.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on May 11, 2016 at 9:54 am

Span did a guest write-up on the Brandon and Brandon blog, this is what he said about the stance.

“One question I get a lot is about my batting stance. My front (right) foot is turned so far inward that my heel is almost facing the pitcher’s mound. I do that because my body instinctively wants to pull the ball instead of staying squared up. So I turn my foot to keep my front hip from flying open. That’s my thinking anyway. I’m always tinkering with my swing. I didn’t have a lot of coaching growing up. I’d go to the batting cage and critique myself. I’d try a bunch of things until something felt right. When I was really little, I imitated Darryl Strawberry. I had a VHS tape of him with his high leg kick. He’d kind of drop his hands as his leg came up. I’d do that with my little plastic bat and my little plastic ball.”

  20. bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 11, 2016 at 11:23 am

I’m reflecting on our 2014 season. We came out of the gate like bats outta hell’s butthole and built up such a powerful lead that it cushioned us against a terrible June & July, and a mediocre August. We picked up the pace in Sept and built enough momentum by the end of the month .. well, the rest is history.

Speaking of ‘rest’ .. I’m beginning to believe BF is onto something more than retractable genitailia with his comment about the possibility that Posey may actually be over rested. That guy needs to be out there. His ‘rest’ schedule seems to be not serving him well.

Pagan was, at least, our most consistent hitter, slap happy or otherwise. I fear when he returns he will not be the same producer. My biggest fear, besides the obvious backend problems, is we have overestimated our offense. Is it that Mr. Span is not all we thought? Panik & Duff are obviously talented but not quite batting champs? I don’t think Posey is the superstar he is being paid to be. An aging Pence, although highly spirited, cannot realistically be expected to carry the team on his own. What we see now, I believe, is what we get with Craw. Belt on the other hand, is coming into is own and may surpass our expectations. Yet, he alone won’t be enough.

Our biggest advantage is that our division rivals are not doing much better. Nearing the 1/4 season mark I’m sensing we are in for a long up & down season but hopeful we can hang in. The key is we must Improve against COL & ARZ. If we do that we have a good chance at Oct … After that, we know anything can happen, especially with a bunch of ‘nobodies’.

I suppose I should add that what I really want is a season like the Cards had last year: win, Win, WIN, WIN!!!! That’s what they did in the reg season. However, the final result … meh! The Cubs this year, may be clones of last year’s Cards.

Ok .. just to be super clear, then I will (try) to shut the fuck up. What I really want is the Gmen to win another WS anyway they can, then the following year defend that Championship anyway they can … by squeaking in, luck, I don’t give a fuck … If they do that, I can die a happy man!

Would I like to see us being gang-buster aka the cubbies? Maybe. Bottom line, I ain’t sweating it. And if they end up sucking this year, you can come back and tell me “I told ya so, Chi!” It is all good brother. Keep the rant alive!

Oh, and when it comes to all things Giants, yeah, I am a greedy fuck, and want a couple more WS titles, but really, what I had always wanted was ONE title in my lifetime. I got that in spades. If they never win another, I can still die a happy man…

  22. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 11, 2016 at 11:41 am

I’ve done comparisons on the Flap before regarding how much Posey plays compared to other catchers in MLB, and Posey plays a lot compared to other catchers. It’s a situation the Giants have where one of their key hitters is a catcher, and it’s perhaps not ideal on paper; but I think it’s hard to complain when championships are rolling in every other year.
The Posey-bashing has been an annual event on the Flap over the years. It started earlier this year is the only difference. Some years it’s his defense that gets criticized more than his offense. This year his defense has been gold glove caliber so far.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 11, 2016 at 11:45 am

True enough Zum ..but isn’t he paid as a 1%er? Shouldn’t we be seeing that kind of offensive production as well as defenses rom him? And should we not be seeing it relatively consistently? I mean, everyone slumps, even Cabrera et al.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 11, 2016 at 1:09 pm

Posey has always been a late starter…I really am not worried about him, and it ain’t my money that is funneling into his bank account. I just want another WS title…any way they can get it, it is all good…

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 11, 2016 at 11:50 am

I would think most clubs do not have all star catchers such as Posey. So there is a lot platooning. Exception would be buddywhatisname with the Cards that was injured most of last year.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 11, 2016 at 1:27 pm

On his playing time, I’m in complete agreement. In fact, as I’ve indicated in numerous posts, this is probably the biggest urban myth on the Flap bar none, which keeps getting regurgitated annually.

As I’ve said previously, most 1st string catchers take off 1-2 days each week (frequently on Sunday and/or the day before or after a travel day). These are real days off, i.e., Posey often is at 1st base versus the bench.

  23. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 11, 2016 at 1:01 pm

Isn’t that amazing. A run actually scores in a Posey AB. Granted the bases were loaded with nobody out when he hit into that DP and the run trickled in. Sometimes i find even-handed Bochy a bit too steady and protective of his key guys. Batting 8th till he gets it back might be just the ticket for Buster right now.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 11, 2016 at 2:48 pm

He’s not going to embarrass Posey by ever batting him 8th. I’m in agreement that Posey could be moved down in the order if the overall slump continues. I can’t see Bochy moving Posey farther down than 6th, if it got to that point.

  29. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2016 at 3:01 pm

That will never happen Stix, not a batting champion guy even if he’s struggling. Batting avg fluctuate daily this time of year. Hell a couple weeks back Posey was at .270 then went 14-28 to raise his average to .330 then the slump back to .270 again, so I guess he will get it back to .300 plus soon..

  30. bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 11, 2016 at 3:23 pm

Giants sure are an equal opportunity team … Every facet is getting their opportunity to soil the bed … It’ll be the pitching for a few days, the bats for awhile, now we are back to giving the pen their chance to fuck things up .. hmm, I suppose we are soon ready for the front end of the rotation and the pen to go in the tank which means the bats will be turning up the heat but will be facing the obligatory insurmountable lead to overcome.

Bum loses his win. This is why previous generation pitchers went for the complete game, regardless of pitch count. You didn’t see Marichal, Gibson, and those guys handing 4-1 leads off to the bullpen.
But it’s a different thing now. One of the ways the game has changed. There’s more protection of pitchers’ arms.

I’m hoping this game goes 19 + innings … Maybe such a marathon will wake this team the fuck up … Tire them out until the get in that ‘zone’.

I remember one of the most important concerts I played in my life, both myself and pianist were sick as dogs … we were literally the ‘walking dead’ … we played the best we ever played .. The consequence was a major positive career shift.

  55. Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on May 11, 2016 at 5:29 pm

Whew! Had the intuition going again, knowing we would win, but what a struggle with the offense 2 for 17 with RISP. Congratulations to Al Suarez, a career minor leaguer, on this, the biggest day of his life with that first MLB victory. Also kudos to all members of our bullpen, excepting the closer, for keeping us in the game. Well, Gearrin slipped as well. That first inning pitch count was what kept Bumgarner from going longer and getting a much deserved win.

Toronto kept trying to hand us the win, bases loaded more than once and finally it paid off ~ on a walk-off walk to Posey. Could be something good comes from that and that now, somewhat off the schneid, he will rediscover his bat in the heat and low humiliated relatives in the Snakepit.

I watched Buster’s at bat while I was picking up some sushi to go. There was no sound on the tv. After the walk me and this dude next to me (only other guy in the restaurant) laughed out loud and kinda awkwardly looked at each other. No high five. Dude making the sushi didn’t even look up. Not the same as a *knowing dude head nod* shared between Giants fans but these days it’s all we have…..

The Blue Jays’ D was sketchy all series. The Giants finally took advantage of it.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 11, 2016 at 6:00 pm

Really, that was “taking advantage”? That was more like being handed the win all wrapped up in bow with a cherry on top! I kinda felt we had our pants down around our ankles the entire series, and we slipped out the backdoor (so to speak) while they were busy zipping up … 🤐

On the very same day they opened the Verrazano Bridge, the Giants made another rotten trade of a good young outfielder they developed, Jose Cardenal to the Angels for another flop catcher named Jack Hiatt. Cardenal quietly had a very long and decent career.
Nobody EVER brings up that deal…

      NOBODY!!!

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on May 11, 2016 at 8:42 pm

I remember that guy, but I didn’t realize he was signed by the Giants. He did have a long career, 18 years, hit some homers, lots of doubles, almost 2,000 hits and some good RBI years. Versatile fielder playing both OF and IF positions. Yes, I visited baseball-reference. 🙂

Of course the Giants franchise of that era is the same one that traded Orlando Cepeda to the Cards for Ray Sadecki, so they made a few boneheaded moves.

Thanks for the reminder. I remember Cardenal throughout my early years as a baseball fan.

Harrison “I can’t hit the broadside of a” Barnes is up to his usual shenanigans. Every game of the series the W’s have come out flat while the Blazers have taken it right to them. Wide open wing shooters throughout the first half and guys you’ve never heard of having monster series’. You wonder what it’ll take for them to come out of the gates hot and ready to play.

  71. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 11, 2016 at 8:52 pm

I swear, Barnes should stay weak-side and drive to the hole. His outside shot has been gone 2/3 of the season

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on May 11, 2016 at 8:59 pm

You have to think he’s regretting turning down the contract for $80 mil. With the possibility of Durant becoming a Warrior, Barnes would be pretty damn expendable. I don’t know what he thinks he worth, but he seems delusional to me.

That non-call when Leonard tried to foul Westbrook last night was mind boggling. How the hell they missed that is beyond me and it may well have cost San Antonio the game.
