A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

BeanTown BeatDown?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 7, 2016

I actually think Suarez is going to do ok tonight. Boston likes to blast the ball out of the yard and that doesn’t really work at AT&T. Plus, they’re playing NL rules in an unfamiliar yard. I dunno, it just feels like he might not get blasted.

And who put this game on the schedule? Boston flies all the way out here for 2 interleague games? Then back to Minnesota? I bet they’re stoked about this trip. lulz.

It’s too bad Cleveland is doing well. I would have liked to have seen the Giants pick up Rajai Davis for 2 months.

Assuming they pick up a guy without a big contract, who are some of the names you’d like to see us look at? I’m on record as going with Carl Crawford just for the jokes on LA.

In case anyone’s interested, I got my wrapup of the Giants series up today. Would have been yesterday, but WordPress ate the post when I was about 1700 words in.

I feel for you. I would do long travel blog posts about my trips around the world and that happened at least 2-3 times easily. More susceptible when you don’t use the app on an Android tablet with portable keyboard. Ugh.

      I’ll check it out.

That had to be terrible. Usually WP is good about backing things up but not yesterday, for whatever reason. I appreciate you heading over for a bit!

Very good post from the enemy camp (grin). Regarding your comments about Jarrett Parker’s home run – Yep, I had been advocating his bus trip to our Sacramento affiliate before that bomb . . . and yes, I was as surprised as Martinez when he hit it.

I read through the comments around here a lot this weekend and got the feeling Parker wasn’t high on a lot of people’s list!

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 7, 2016 at 7:11 am

In fairness to Parker, he’s getting an opportunity where we have few answers (Pence and Pagan injuries). Consequently, I am rooting for him to grasp this chance. By the by, he’s a decent outfielder IMO. Others can speak up here, but most of us are hoping for a trade to address our holes in the outfield and bullpen. Me? I think the bullpen is a priority, but am not certain how to address it: in-house, the “normal” way most teams do it; or, a trade, e.g., Miller. Regardless, it’s wishful thinking. This is the team we are right now and likely to be going forward . . . at least until the trade deadline when Sabes usually does his magic.

I think he is an above-average OFer in the field. Question is can he correct some of those holes in his swing (cut down on Ks/increase OBP, etc.). I like the kid and would love to see him excel in this opportunity.

Love the mention of Rajai. Two times I picked him in DFS and he raked with bombs. Last night being the latest. Twice!

If no one picks up Crawford the Dodgers still have to pay his salary, so I’m content with that.
When I look at the few teams that might be willing to deal right now, I just don’t see a whole lot of help. Plus, knowing the Giants are in need, I think teams will ask too much for the shit players that would be available (even the possible salary dump guys don’t excite me). Although he’s probably running on empty, I’d kick the tires on Rios for the league minimum. Otherwise, I’d play the kids and wait for the deadline before making a deal.

I long for the days when Pittsburgh was our minor league bitch. Of all the OFers out there, McCutchen is the one I covet the most.

I am firmly in the lets-give-Parker-a-reasonable-shot-at-the-job camp. And by that I mean, no more of this 3-4 at bats here, sit for a few days, 3-4 more at bats, get sent to Sactown for a cup of coffee bullshit. Put him out there everyday for 25 games and see what happens.
Its a small camp—in fact, I may be the only one in it, but that’s cool, as I’m a bit of a loner anyway.

All I am saying is “Give Park a Chance.”

I would really rather not take on Dodger rejects, so I want nothing to do with Crawford. As for Markakis, Parker hit as many home runs in ONE FUCKING GAME last year as Markakis hit in almost 700 at-bats.
Think about that for a second.

With you there on Parker. He’s not some 20 yr old kid any more and he’s done all he could at AAA. He’s either in or out. Seems like an OK OF too. Is there anyone else in LU with the kind of power to do what he did Sunday?

Interesting that Daniel (great post as always) compares rest given to Molina vs. Posey, since that’s been a bone of contention here for some time, the amount of r and r highest paid player gets. Kind of surprising given both mgrs. being ex catchers, they take two different approaches.
Brown seems capable back up, tho obviously recent history here bar isn’t very high.
And anyway most back up catchers are more about D and pitch handling than how well they hit.

Btw hope that Cards make a decent run at Cubs and Maddon, Pirates too. WC is gonna be tough this year.

    • Cardinal70's avatar Cardinal70 said, on June 7, 2016 at 8:37 am

Many Cardinal fans would say that was the difference in a manager that takes charge and a manager that tends to defer to his players. Matheny’s gone on record as saying “who am I to say he’s hurt” which tends to morph into “how can I say he needs a rest if he doesn’t agree?” While perhaps that’s not the reality, the perception is that Matheny’s much less likely to go up against a player that wants into/wants to stay in a game, even when it might be best for the team if they don’t.

Molina’s always carried a big load and every year they say they are going to rest him more and every year they don’t. It is interesting to hear y’all are having a different discussion in regards to Posey!

Thanks for the well wishes and kind words.

Giants’ Angel Pagan: Runs sprints Sunday

        by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Pagan (hamstring) ran sprints on the field prior to Sunday’s game, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.

This is a good sign for Pagan, who has dealt with repeated hamstring troubles this season. The injury-plagued outfielder could be on track for activation later this week if he continues to progress at this rate.

  9. bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on June 7, 2016 at 8:31 am

My incessant bellyaching about the Giants “weak” offense prompted Chi and few others to take the time to point out the error of my ways. Statistics have been presented supporting the argument that the Giants are NOT weak offensively and are, in fact, according to said stats, middling to quite decent in most offensive categories (including RISP).

I love stats. I really do. Yet, I don’t always believe everything they seem to indicate.

Rather than pouring over stats, a valid sensibility for the overall character of this year’s Giants can be arrived at if one looks closely at the 18 series we have played up ’til now. Yes, I’m actually suggesting we look to the games and match ups themselves to give us an indication as to the true Giants temperament (with a peripheral nod to interrogations of the offensive potentialities).

So, for your perusal and enjoyment, if not edification, here is a little trip down memory lane: a season ‘series’ to date refresher/review/synopsis …

First .. a no brainer .. even though at times we have played poorly and lost badly to some of the teams within our division, we all agree that the Giants are the best team in the NL West. After all, we are in first place by a reasonable margin. And, we are 5-3-1 in those series within our division. I do suggest we temper our elation somewhat because 3 of our 5 wins were against the Padres .. yet again, those WERE sweeps! The tie was a 4 game split at home with COL. Besides the dreadful 4 game home sweep by AZ, we lost one series in LA, and one in COL. But the latter two losses occurred very early on: second week of April.

Second, let’s say we are better in everyway than all those other bottom-third-of-the-league teams we have faced and won series against (MIL 2-1; CIN 2-1).

Third, let’s say the recent series split with ATL was a mere anomaly … we know we are a much better team than them.

Ok then … who else have we been tested against and how have we fared? What about teams considered by many baseball pundits to be, if not our equal, a close match or maybe even slightly better?

Well, we have played 3 series (two on the road) against such teams: Mets; Jays; Cards. We lost them all (2-1).

As a sidebar, I will mention that we did win our home series with MIA (2-1). Arguably, the Fish are not an upper echelon team.

Finally, the only other series was against the unequivocal best team in the 2016 WORLD .. the Chicago “give-them-their-rings-now” Arrietas. We won that one (2-1).

IMHO, if only because they occurred relatively close to each other in the schedule, the series most worthy of closer investigation are vs Jays & Cubs.

A slip sliding Toronto beat us at home (2-1) but both loses were games we might have won if Peavy wasn’t deep into his, oh so familiar, imploding phase – we didn’t really stand a chance in that particular game even though Belt & Pence made it close. The second loss (shutout) was also of a familiar type: a true “Cainer”. He pitched well but had no run support. A strong Bum assault kept us in the final game of the series (Casillia BS) but the only offense we could mount for the win was a walk-off-walk for the series win in extras. Hey, whatever uh? A win is a win. I agree. Didn’t some wise person once say it is better to be lucky than good?

The sweet home Chicago series started with a good trouncing, courtesy of Arrieta & the Cubs, who easily broke our then 8 game win streak. In that first game Peavy offered up another ‘bare-ass-meant’ of anything but riches putting us in a hole even the great offenses of yester year would have been challenged to dig themselves out of. However, in the following two games Cain & Bum supplied both offense & defense respectively to get us consecutive wins to take the series.

In closing, I propose that we havent yet competed enough against top tier teams to be able gauge with any accuracy what this team can do. The facts before you point to the unimpeachable truth that, with the exception of the Cubs — at the time beginning to enter their first reality check phase of the season— we have not played well against any of the so called front runners. For whatever reason (?weak offense/weak pitching/weak pen?) we have lost every series.

Of all the relative comments from Flappers the two that rang most true for me was Willedav’s assessment that Belt’s strong performance is taking pressure off Posey and he will eventually come around. Yeah, I can buy that. The other is that someone (maybe James?) pointed out what an inferior bunch the 2010 Giants seemed at certain points in that season. Yep, I can get with that too.

I have mentioned several times that I truly understand the basic concept that our Giants — built on a foundation of extraordinary pitching working in tandem with a small ball offense that grinds out its runs — are not, and never will be a flashy high scoring team. I do get that.

Whether or not I’m a Doomer, Gloomer, Joy Rider, High on Lifer … Troll … whatever .. is moot. Important is that we have a little cushion in the division; we are mostly playing well against our div rivals; a win is win, pretty or not. Sans Pence the wins may be uglier. That’s okay too.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 7, 2016 at 10:02 am

BB, per your closing argument you propose “that we havent yet competed enough against top tier teams to be able gauge with any accuracy what this team can do.” I agree somewhat, although your argument seems to me to be more about Wins and Losses not if we have a good offense or not. But in playing teams with winning records you point out we’re 7-8 (if you include the Dodgers we are 11-11), so it would seem for us to be 35-24 we are beating the teams we should beat, the ones with losing records, right? Are the winning teams that you mentioned doing the same? The Padres are 2-1 over the Cubs and Pirates, 2-2 against the Mets and 1-2 against the Cards. Which makes them 7-6 against those teams with winning records (counting the Dodgers they’d be 9-10), so are they a better team than SF? I say no, and I say we haven’t competed enough against all teams to know what this team can do (not to mention the team we started with this year will probably look different by October).
So lets just keep winning and see what shakes out.

When I threw out the stats in reference to your “weak offense” comment, it was not meant to belittle you. I was just trying to add some quantitative perspective to the discussion, and you have done the same with team-by-team comparisons. Thanks.

Bottom line, I am an optimist, and do think this team will come around, and has a good shot at making the post-season.

The last point I want to make is that I enjoy your posts, regardless of whether you are dooming on the Giants, or not. I am seriously glad you are part of the mix here in the Flap Universe.

Blanco next with 152, burrell 136 melk 101 Aoki and Morse 82 Andres 76 Cody Ross 59.

Interesting names on there, mostly of infamy: Velez 40 Bowker 25 Dave Roberts 23 deRosa and Kieschnick 21

Even as a joke on the Bumbinos, I want nothing to do with Crawford or any other stop-gap kind of OFer.

I am down with Loo’s suggestion for Jon Jay. Here is his post from last night:

“So the ESPN clowns last night like Jon Jay for the Giants. They might be on to something, although (like Markakis) he bats lefty and a righty bat would be preferable. He’s a FA after this year making $6.85 million now. Age 31. Currently leads the league with 18 doubles. Gets HBP a lot. Consistent BA – .288 lifetime. Plenty of playoff experience with Cards including 2014 when he went 9-18 vs. SF. Plays all 3 OF positions. Replaces Pence for now and Pagan next year if all goes well and they re-sign him. I might be sold…”

Looks like the perfect fit…only problem is he is currently playing for San Diego. He is a FA next year, so perhaps they would swing a deal with us. If not Jay, then someone in this mold…meaning a decent starting OFer (especially if he can play all three OF spots like Jay), who would be a serviceable replacement for Pagan next year, and a year or two after that.

Also, regarding sandog’s call that Cleveland is guaranteed a win in game 3, here are some posts from last night:

    ======================================
Flavor – just saw San Diggity guaranteed a win for Cle in game 3. That’s got me doing the slowest of burns, dawg……

And to address Clowns feedback .. I said it was a “peripheral nod” to the question of offense capabilities. I purposely lumped games against division rivals in to one segment. I wasn’t thinking only of teams with matching or better records than ours. Mostly because there aren’t many … which is a good thing! I think I said pretty clearly I was going by the pundits opinions of what teams were destined for greatness this year. And agin we have not played many of those … Mets, Jays & Cubs, that’s it. Left out LA because they are in our division.

In any case, lets see how we do with the Red Sox .. Fuck I hate that team !!

Blade I thought VanGumby brought up a good point middle of 3rd when Warriors began to extend lead, as LB and Irving were throwing the ball away and missing shots. He wondered how much fight Cavs had in them.

If I was Lue (in way over his head vs. Kerr +) I’d play Della more, because if nothing else he is out there to compete and can knock down an outside shot, unlike guys like Shumpert and Smith. It would also free up Irving to attack the rim as off guard or run iso pick and roll with LB. Cavs are shooting horribly from outside–so? Go inside and crash boards! OKC made Warriors pay with Kanter Adams and Ibaka.
Portland Gs attacked and went to the basket; Irving should do the same and drive on Curry and Thompson.

But really Warriors just have many more smart and unselfish players; guys like Bogut Barbosa Livingston have given great lift in limited minutes to Green other starters and Iguodala. If Love is out they lose another weapon even tho he hasn’t much shown up either. Long row to hoe for these guys.
I will give props to LB for standing up and admitting he sucked and has to get better. He is still capable of taking over a game, and might do it.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 7, 2016 at 12:59 pm

Yep, their options seem woefully limited compared to the Warriors. I despise JR Smith. He’s a whiner, an imbecile (seriously, this guy’s intelligence is barely above mentally retarded), irresponsible, and ONLY plays for himself. A shame because he has other wordly athletic skills (or did when he was with the Nuggets). Now? He only shoots the 3 and rarely is hot.

The only reason to put Delly in is to turn the game into a brawl. He’s streaky at best, an offensive liability at worst. Mosgov isn’t a bad idea though. Unless the OBDs go small. Then he’s s liability as well.

JR Is the big question. He has vanished. Bronbton could score 60 tomorrow and Cleve still loses.

Cleveland is soft inside. They are a soft team defensively. The Dubs looked woefully small against OKCs length. Not so much against the Softies.

  23. sandog's avatar sandog said, on June 7, 2016 at 1:54 pm

Was Delly a known thug at Saint Mary’s? I saw him play several times back then and always viewed him as just a solid player who always seemed to do the right thing and could stroke it from the outside.
Now, he’s this total scrapper, and the few times I watched him play in the last year or so, his outside shot looks pretty sketchy to me. Its like he’s a totally different guy from what I remember in his WCC days.

PS/Just for the heckuva it………..I still have fond memories of being at the NCAA tournament game where St. Mary’s took on Wake Forest and Brad “The Big Continent” Millard drop-stepped and 2 hand jammed twice in a row right in Tim Duncan’s face. It was awesome.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 7, 2016 at 3:29 pm

No, Dog. I saw him play a bunch of games at St. Mary’s and he was just a balls-to-the-wall kind of guy. I think he just got much better open looks in college. I mean the WCC is a pretty good conference, but it is light years away from the NBA. His rep now is as a shit disturber/cheap shotter based on a lot of his recent things. really, it’s part of how he sticks around. A John Starks kind of guy.

The other guy I really liked in those days (my daughter was at St. Mary’s the same 4 years as Delly) was Kelly Olynyk. He played in the same time frame for Gonzaga. I saw the Zags a few times when he was there and he impressed me with his quickness. I thought he might be a little too light for the NBA but he’s a pretty solid PF. He played a great game against the Warriors this season.

Let’s not forget Cincy is a band box for hitters. Let’s see his numbers next year. But I wish him well and it was was a smart trade. Some Flapper noted what the team did record wise after Pence went down last year. Probably took us out of a legit run for the playoffs (Besides Leake’s underwhelming performance). So I don’t think we can wait until the trade deadline to make a move and rely on giving Parker a 25 day trial.

I am pretty confident Dubs are winning Game 3 and let the Cavs get one and close them out at home for Game 5.

Lebron gives them a one year extension and I think they go for a big deal and move Kyrie and Kevin Love for Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. Lebron then brings in Dwayne Wade for one more glory run. A CP3-WADE-LEBRON-GRIFFIN-TRISTAN THOMPSON lineup at least guarantees a return to the Finals for them and much tougher lineup to take the Dubs on. That could be one hell of a potential matchup.

I am surprised that the Cavs have sat Mozgov. I thought he played pretty well last year. Lebron and Lue have made the classic mistake of thinking they can play like the Warriors. Only way the Cavs can win one game is to go as big as possible and slow everything down….but the Dubs adjust and wins in 5…really sheit performance from the Sharks. Put an end to the White Russian magic:( need a new drink…

No shit. Blanco is not the answer as a regular, and what, you want Pagan out there everyday when he returns. No way he lasts. Span it is. That lack of OF depth is exactly why I am big on the Giants getting out of their comfort zone and going out and trading for a decent starting OFer who can play multiple positions (including CF).

I watched a little bit of the Rockies and Dodgers game last night, where Chatwood pitched a combined one hitter with one of their relievers, for only the 2nd one hitter in the Rockies entire history.

However, that’s not what this post is about. Yesterday, Willie said something that I not only agree with, but have seen it repeated 3 times by different people (comments in our local paper and other baseball sites). Here’s what Willie said, with a rebuttal from James and disagreement toward James from Zumiee:

“willedav said, on June 6, 2016 at 9:05 pm (Edit)
This imo is what is going to doom LA—rotation of Kershaw and nothing.
The Stripling guy didn’t pan out and Maeda seems eminently hittable, so is Kazmir.
Bolsinger is gone after 5+—like Peavy his numbers 3rd time through the order are awful.

Part of Roberts problem is going to be setting a LU–they still have too many OFs that are platoon guys and not full time regulars, even without Puig and Ethier. Like boone said about Cards IF last night once Peralta comes back, moving guys in and out all the time isn’t recipe for success. But there are decisions that have to be made on your best 8, and that could mean extended bench time for some potentially talented players that won’t like sitting out much.
Roberts had Turner leading off tonite.

James said, on June 6, 2016 at 9:55 pm (Edit)
WillieD, LA’s offense has actually been a lot worse than its pitching, even with Seager going off. While LA has had only two top notch starters, its team ERA is still better than SF’s. The mediocrity of LA’s 3-5 is a match for Smarge, Cain, and Peavey, and their bullpen has been pretty good.

The only reason why I am posting this is because first, I wanted to acknowledge Willie for saying it first, as well as acknowledging that I have heard it a number of times in just the last day. In any event, our problems pale in comparison to what the Dodgers are going through. They have Kershaw and nothing (as Willie said). Similarly, they have Seager, an old Gonzalez, and a couple of complimentary pieces. All of these guys have won zero championships.

I think this took place when Martin was managing in minors. Lasorda is on the mound and throwing at his guys, and Martin jumps up and yells at him he’ll fight him after the game.
Lasorda walks off the mound toward the dugout and wants to fight right now.
Cooler heads eventually prevail and they do meet up after the game…and wind up drinking buddies.

Not true. The bullpens were by design. I went to the groundbreaking and ended up buying season tix that I had the first three years. Bleachers, 138. During the groundbreaking they had folks answering questions and providing details about the park. And way they are doing anything with that garden area other than expanding it. That place is packed pretty frequently…just one more of the Giants-owned gold mines.

Before the park was built, the original plans had a brew pub in CF, with outside seating on the roof and also the scoreboard on top. My neighbors on Pot Hill complained that the scoreboard would be to visible, so the Giants scrapped that idea. I had already started making payments on my seat licenses (we had I think five years before the park opened to pay up), man I was pissed about that.

      Maybe some other time…

Looking forward to that one. Maybe when Blade and I visit NYC…

Isn’t that a Bozo no no?

Bosox are showing an angle I’ve never seen before of Span’s stance. I didn’t realize that front foot is torqued THAT much. Bizarre.

Re: Buster’s bad thumb, Pavlovic writes today:
“Posey said he’s day-to-day and will continue to get treatment for an issue that has plagued him off and on throughout the season.” Plagued him off and on? Throughout the season. First I’ve heard of it. This is written like everybody and his brother knew. Maybe I was the only one that didn’t know. Any of you guys hear of this before today — as an explanation why Posey has hit like crap so far this year? I surmised several times that there was something wrong with him, but they weren’t saying…

Come on snarkk, you know it is at the team’s discretion what is shared. But no, first I have heard of it.

It’s typical Giants. Somebody outta the blue drops a nonchalant nugget that somebody’s been hurt all season, apparently when they can’t keep the lid on any longer with the usual white lies…

Diggity, the 4 finger glove is unique in that it has a covert eight-panty payload in the fingers . . . Yep, 8 of the 10 artists/sculptors that made it were women and left their panties in the fingers.

      That’s a Fun Fact, Blade!

Dammit, I KNEW there was a reason I liked that damned glove! Have to give it a sniff next time I am there.

Suarez is looking pretty sharp out there. I like what I’m seeing.

If we’d had Suarez and Petit in the rotation instead of Peavy and Cain all year, SF would have 40 wins.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 7, 2016 at 8:49 pm

Look at P and C’s contract sizes, and that tells U all U need to know why they’ve been out there stinking it up for most of the season so far…

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 7, 2016 at 8:52 pm

Ab-so-fucking-lutely. But it was still a head-scratcher that they did not go a bit harder at Petit. I didn’t get that one.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 7, 2016 at 9:03 pm

Nor did I. IMO Bochy misused Petit last season, that is why he was “inconsistent”, which is what they said when they let him go. I call BS. Dusty has used him 14X so far, that pencils out to around 40X this year…

  71. sandog's avatar sandog said, on June 7, 2016 at 8:47 pm

So Suarez…..how would you like a regular spot in the rotation for the next couple of months or so?

      Exactly. Why not.

Span’s stance with that front foot bugs me, but he’s got a high OB and a little pop. If the guys behind him, like Panik and Duffy were hitting better he’d score more often. And yes he does play a good CF. Not spectacular but fine every day guy who has been healthy so far unlike a lot of Giants.

Suarez through 6, quality start. Insurance, pls.

Just to set record straight, Mr. James is spot on about Dodgers. They have given up a dozen less runs than Giants, mostly I guess due to fact that other than Urias none of their SPs have ERAs like Peavy.
And B/R puts their team OPS at 12th in NL, so lot of guys struggling that hit much better last year.

  74. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 7, 2016 at 8:53 pm

    Petit so far w/the Nats:
    14 games, 28 IP, ERA 2.89, 23 SOs, 5 BBs, WHIP 1.04.
Giants could definitely use that kind of production…
