A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

That giant ass……

A stance on the mound so wide he could ride 2 fine steeds at once….

The meticulously oiled mustache….

And that herky jerky two pump chump wind up…….

Everything about that guy I want to go away.

And it happened again. The pitiful A’s who are 16.5 games out of first place came into our park and smacked us around.

I could easily see the A’s sweeping us.

It seems to that we have the toughest time with the A’s and Rockies no matter how terrible they are. Two teams that just always seems to have our number

A’s players don’t bother me, unlike Beane and ownership.
the kid pitched a good game and he’s not a fluke. threw hard and mixed in some off speed stuff. Hey the stache sox and windup work for him. Houston kid out of Westside High and Tex A&M Aggies, and that’s not easy either.
Semien is a Berkeley kid, good to see him improve defensively with hard work and he has some pop.
Davis and Valencia can both hit for power too.
Crisp is their version of Pagan, OK when healthy, otherwise…
Melvin is a good guy too, and had them in position to take down Royals in WC 2014 before Lester and his pen ran out of gas.
They are still the team of Billy Butler and Yonder Alonso and Axford, 10 games under .500.

Like to know how many giants fans crowd the O wed/thurs. Bum’s going Thurs, they are all night games and you obviously don’t have to hassle with StubHub or scalpers. If you can get to BART you can walk right in, not a bad deal.

So, I mentioned yesterday that I am probably in the minority as to liking inter-league play. I mean really, Blade and I would not be heading to Boston and NYC if inter-league did not exist.

But, every time we get our asses handed to us by the Fucking A’s, it gives me pause as to my appreciation of inter-league. I mean really, we have the superior team, and they rock those funky-assed unis with the WHITE shoes. I just hate everything about their look and their seemingly unending ability to kick our ass. Fuck the A’s…cannot wait for these two series to be over.

    • sfsarge's avatar sfsarge said, on June 28, 2016 at 9:25 am

Agreed. Their unis look stupid and their colors…ugggh. But I have to say their few hardcore fans bring great energy to their yard. But those stupid vuvuzelas I want them to choke on, just idiotic. It’s funny, I went to an A’s game a couple of years back with my wife for a company thing and I was rocking Giants gear and I had a SF hanging from my rear view mirror and as I was driving into the parking lot, the parking attendant yelled at me “you’re at the wrong park bro” and I got a lot of stink eye from the oh so friendly fans over there. But when I see people wearing A’s gear at AT&T no one really seems to care. They definitely hate us and they are just a minor annoyance to us. That aspect of the “rivalry” tickles me.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 28, 2016 at 12:15 pm

I have had similar experience at their yard. Last time was probably 15 years ago or so, and while walking out (after the Giants had beat their sorry asses), I had some chump who wanted to start some shit because I was rocking my Giants gear. Ain’t nobody got time for that shit!

Yes, their fans are hardcore and love their team. And no shit re: the vuvuzelas…makes me want to shove one up their ass popsicle style.

Yep…tons of good seats available on the A’s site. For $99 you can sit in box seats right behind the Giant’s dugout. For $28, you can sit in the nose-bleed seats, right behind home plate, and a couple of innings later could probably stroll down to lower box seats with no issues.

It makes you think, as someone posted yesterday (I can’t remember who), that the A’s get super pumped for this “Bay series” and the Giants are pretty meh about it.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 28, 2016 at 9:30 am

mm, idk. Giants are in a pennant race and can’t overlook anyone, as series with Phils should have shown. You see this happen all the time—Rays had lost 10 in a row and walked into Fenway and pounded Red Sox

I’d imagine lot of these guys know each other and see them around local haunts. Pagan at 2b was chatting it up with infielders, and he was talking to Alonso too who used to be a Pad over at 1b. Bragging rights over who kicked who’s ass still mean something.
Plus iirc Giants did well against them last year…have to look that one up.

The one thing that pissed me off about yesterday’s game, and I only saw the last 3 innings, its because I’m on dish network now, I had to listen to the fucking A’s announcers. Fosse is an imbecile. Kuiper is worse.

On the tough play that Panik didn’t make in the 8th on the popup to shallow center, Fosse said, “if it was a closer game, Panik makes that play.” I was baffled by that comment as being completely bereft of logic. My son said, “That’s Tim McCarver territory. He not only states the obvious, he misstates the obvious.”

Then they went on and on how this is a revenge game because the Giants won 4 of 5 from the A’s last year. Irregardless of the veracity of that statement, you don’t win a series in one game.

RIP Buddy Ryan. Quite a character . . . Loved it when he cold cocked a player (forgot who . . . maybe it was a fan?). I hated that 46 defense when the 49ers played against it, but give credit where credit is due – it was innovative and changed the game. I really thought that Bears team would be more than a one and out type team. Players went “Hollywood” and never regained that magic they had in 85 SB run.

In honor of the A’s win, I promise to puke green and yellow today.

sfsarge is right, when we played at the Stick, the As fans that I knew really talked up how great their stadium was, how their weather was so much better, how they didn’t understand why we still went to games etc.. We get the new yard and it was just, oh yeah just because you have a new stadium blah blah blah. Although they did bother me some (well, sharing the Sporting Green in the Chronicle did piss me off) but it was those folks that wore the split SF/As hat that pissed me off the most. 15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 28, 2016 at 10:45 am

Blade, the biggest reason the Bears didn’t repeat is because Buddy left after that 85 season to become the head coach for the Eagles. He and Ditka had no love for each other, but they fed off each other’s animosity. Once Buddy left, they never got back to the Super Bowl for quite a while. Course, the Niners had something to do with that. . .

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 28, 2016 at 11:04 am

I think the punching of the Oilers OC was because the Oilers were doing the ‘run and shoot,’ and they were having a lot of quick 3-and-outs, and Ryan was angry the Oilers defense didn’t get much chance to rest.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 28, 2016 at 11:05 am

I don’t remember at what point in the game the punch occurred, but it was during a game the Oilers won 24-0 over the Jets, so it’s not like the Oilers were struggling.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 28, 2016 at 11:21 am

With the lead, Ryan wanted more running to eat up clock, but the ‘run and shoot’ wasn’t good at that. His frustration with the offense had been building.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 28, 2016 at 11:07 am

I’ve read where Dent blames Ditka, but that rings hollow. I think it is more accurate to say the offense began and started with Payton. In short, the offense never passed the eye test in my opinion. Also, the team was polarized as you suggested, e.g., they carried Ryan off the field, along with Ditka after the SB win. lulz.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on June 28, 2016 at 11:08 am

Bears went 14-2 the year after Buddy left, so it’s not like they took a big fall. And they actually gave up fewer points in ’86 than ’85. They got upset at home by the ‘Skins in the playoffs, with Flutie at QB instead of McMahon, and that was that. And of course, Buddy never won a playoff game as a head coach.

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on June 28, 2016 at 11:42 am

McMahon was the straw for that team. he was the first (only?) legitimate QB the bears ever had. he was able to take some of the pressure off of peyton and give the defense enough points for it to stand up. I said at the time he was going to be a difference maker for them. don’t get me wrong, he wasn’t great, but he was a great fit for the bears. and peyton was flat out amazing. everyone in the world new he was going to get the ball and he would get yards anyway. that the perry has a td in the superbowl and he doesn’t is just flat criminal and Ditka should burn for that lapse.

Don’t know who the guy was, but in the early days of the Milwaukee Bucks their PA announcer would yell the home team’s baskets twice (Basket by Alcindor!!! – Basket by Alcindor!!!). A visitor’s basket (just the player’s last name) was muttered in a low, depressed monotone (“Reed”). John Condon at the Garden was fantastic and pretty much impartial. “That was Dave DeBusschere”…

I like this Giants team. They are resilient. I also like our reserves, especially Brown, who is a capable catcher when Posey needs a breather. I don’t believe in luck (i.e., I have always believed luck is defined as preparation meeting opportunity), so the Giants tied for the league in wins and one behind the MLB leader is well deserved. I’ll leave the stats to James to figure out, but this team in my opinion – just pulls together and even more so, when one of the pieces is injured or not doing well.

Related to that, I am not even for a second concerned about Smargman . . . Once we get into the playoffs, we only need Bum, Cueto, and fill in the blank (Smarg, Peavy, or ?). Seeing good things for this team.

Several years ago, I played in a low level celebrity golf tournament out near Palm Springs. Jim McMahon was the headline celebrity and every foursome had one “celebrity” in it. We had a guy in our group who played bass in Styx and The Babies. He was a cool dude. The Bears kicker, Robbie Gould was the celebrity in the group behind us and he flew drives over our head—twice. Anyhoo, on Saturday morning, we got out early to catch the shuttle so we could take a few swings and when we get on board there was one person sitting in the back—Jim McMahon himself. I was the first one on and said something to him and he either completely ignored me or made the slightest nod of his head (with sunglasses on). I took that to mean he didn’t want to mix with the common folk at 630 in the morning and did not address him again, but my friend Todd wouldn’t leave him alone. “I watched you on the Chargers— I’m a season ticket holder” “What do you know about this course” “Man, that Bears team was great” He kept going on and on and McMahon barely responded. We were trying to get him to shut the fuck up, but he is one of those guys who doesn’t read body language well and never backs off. This all took place not long after Jimmer Fredette was going off at BYU. Some of you hoopheads might remember this, but that year BYU was ranked at or near the top of the polls and suddenly they kicked the second best player off the team. He was a black guy and reportedly he had been having a sexual relationship with a white student. It was controversial deal at the time. So then Todd asked McMahon about that whole deal and all the sudden McMahon came to life and spent the rest of the shuttle ride telling us how hypocritical and bigoted BYU was/is, mixing in a couple of other stories from his time there.
It was pretty wild how just putting the right topic on the table completely transformed his mood.

Have either one of you been in Boston? If we are there around lunch time in the 20th, is Cheers to touristy for you all for a drink or we can do something around Newberry St. and get some chowdah!!!!

The Bad Seeds no longer have his longtime cohorts Mick Harvey who goes all the way back with Nick Cave to his punk band The Birthday Party and euro guitarist Blixa Bargeld. But his new main Bad Seed is Warren Ellis who plays everything from piano, guitars and fiddle and is his co-writer for all these soundtracks and probably has a lot to do with their more rootsy, western/country Gothic sound….my best description, especially with the Western themed soundtracks.

I don’t know how A’s fans stay fans since the only consistent thing about this team is that every season from now until end July, the big talk about the team is which players are going to get traded out to get prospects. WTF kind of organization is permanently grooming prospects at the MLB level? What is the point of it? Ridiculous…

The novelty of Billy Beane is way over. “Moneyball” is a good book and a good movie, but they describe a season from 2001 or so, when Beane had a sabermetric edge on other teams; but basically all the other teams have caught up on that.
Maybe the only reason Beane stays there is because they gave him a small share of ownership of the team.

Pagan should be leadoff right now, Span can hit #8 or even sit — the guy is doing very little, has very little energy, is not doing leadoff work. He’s not particularly good in the OF, either. Span is what happens when you don’t generate a major league OFer in 20 years…

Reading ‘The Fall’ by Albert Camus. Even though it is slim, it’s taking me a while.

I understand Caymus cab very well. The Albert varietal, not so much. I need a lot of the former to understand a little of the latter…

I should add that another benefit of HBO series’ is the prevalence of boobies in virtually every episode. It’s amazing how many women have perfect tits.

My existential philosophy is very deep, based on N.L. Diamond’s writings:

    “I am”… I said
    To no one there
And no one heard at all
    Not even the chair

    “I am”… I cried , “I am”… said I
    And I am lost and I can’t
    Even say why
    Leavin’ me lonely still

Reading him, as opposed to hearing him, he sounds as deep as Leonard Cohen [whose latest I just got]

When Panik got beaned, I may’ve mentioned here how crazy it seemed that everyone, including him, seemed so blase about it. Crazy. Reckless, too. How about ICELAND beating England!? [old news]

It’s a tough call sometimes, unless teams go to a policy of automatically removing players in those situations, which baseball hasn’t gotten to, yet. If the player seems OK, they sometimes let them continue to play. Panik was smiling, saying he was fine, so they went with the player’s word on that.

If I get sick at ATT, I’m going to run from Giants medicos and head for the nearest witch doctor…

Bochy is making sure he doesn’t wait a batter too long, regarding removing Suarez. Bochy usually has a keen feel for that. I think he just was a little off on that a couple a games during the weekend.
