A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

13 Runs in 4 Innings?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 29, 2016

Let me be clear about this: I don’t like bullpen guys. What do they have to do? Go out there for 1 inning and throw as hard as they want? Boo hoo. If Peavy has a clean first inning tonight and then gets blown up in the 2nd we’d be calling for his retirement.

So I have very little patience for guys who can’t go an inning without giving up runs.

And we are halfway to the A’s sweeping us.

That brings up a valid consideration: Maybe we aren’t as good as our record indicates. While we’ve been busy slapping each other on the backs and dropping knowing dude head nods on all those who pass, it needs to be acknowledged that we have been beating up on some pretty average/pole smoking teams this year.

But, there is no dominant team in either league unless you want crown the Cubs ass. And we all know that success in the regular season means nothing come the post season……..

Well, the hope is that this shit settles down some. Romo’s still out and doesn’t look to be a factor anymore. Kontos has gotten wobbly, and the new guys are fair to horrible. Affeldt is gone, and Lopez is out of gas. Casilla veers between decent and Big Sweatyish. I think success breeeds success, and suck breeds suck.

I think we go searching for a couple arms somewhere in the next month. Cishek from the Mariners is a possible if Seattle folds up the tent next month. A name that I saw who could be available was the one and only Jason Grilli. Didn’t we get Candy Maldonado for him?

I want to know why Kontos threw 2 brilliant sliders to his first batter than went to two fastballs out side of the zone until he finally grooved one that was drilled. Why the fuck not go back to the breaking pitch?

That foolish pitch cost us the game…

And I mentioned last night that Andrew Miller may be the key acquisition this trade season, keeping him away from the Cubs may end up being the deciding factor in the pennant hunt…

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:20 am

The Cubs probably have a lot more to offer the Yankmees than what we have as prospects…don’t know if we have enough prospects to get those bullpen arms and then the needed OF bat and possibly an extra IF like Yunel Escobar who can play second and third…

Romo had another clean outing and should come back right away.
I have hard time believing Miller is coming here. Yanks will want a lot for him—Chapman would be easier to get but he is an FA after the season. Fixing pen not gonna be easy and a lot of teams need help there.

Giants are still a very good team that can compete with anyone. Hey, Nats blew Ws vs. LA, Cards are barely above .500, Dodgers are basically Opie and nothing, Mets cratering, Pirates look lost. Cubs are coming back to the pack yada yada. Warts and all, who is better out there?

Law may be the ascendant guy. Like to see Peavy stay on track and Bum goes tmw. Get a payback in their yard and keep the freaking ball in the yard. Smolinski?
K Davis has .500 slugging, 19 bombs 50 rbis. Parker now up to .480 slugging and is more patient hitter–he’s gotta be in the LU every day.
And yes he is tough to watch before a pitch is thrown, waving the bat around and his front foot is constantly going up and down, sometimes his back one moves too.
Yes Pagan fans, he now leads team with .301 BA.

Parker has won his place in the starting lineup. Blanco is still fine as a #4, probably subbing two or three times a week for whoever needs a rest.

It always seems the A’s have the Giants number, look spring training and the bay bridge series. For whatever reason the A’s just do it to the Giants. The Giants are holding it together with band aides, duct tape and bailing wire. The June swoon for the last 4 days of June? I will take that.

One thing we are discovering is that Pena is very determined to stick and is fast making his case. Gillaspie is hitting like Cassius Clay, but clanking like a steam powered tractor. Maybe some AL team needing a solid DH would be willing to swap a competent reliever after one of our slew of wounded warrior infielders returns.

  10. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 29, 2016 at 9:39 am

Good thread, Flav. I am with Willie on his 2nd paragraph of his 8:47. I think this is one of the more solid teams in some time. IMO they have more depth than any of the recent teams. I think they will be fine. Fuck, every team hits a few bumps in the road, and the A’s always seem to be one of those bumps.

I predict the boys get back on the good foot behind Peavy tonight.

And agree also with WillieD on Parker. When the debate was being held a week or two ago re: who should go down between Parker and Mac, I was adamant that Parker would stick. He is by far a better fielder. They both have pop, but I see Parker growing into a better all-around player. Agree that he needs to be in the LU damned near every day.

Hey Kev, how about that old fuck Pagan? All you young punks get in line…the old man is in the house.

I missed almost all of last night’s game. We went to see Lyle Lovett and his LARGE band. I have seen him with this band at least half a dozen times now, and he never disappoints. GREAT SHOW. We got in the truck for the ride home and I heard the 8th inning meltdown. And from what I gather, the Giants gave it up TWICE last night. Wash that shit off and kick some A’s ass!

I grew up in Santa Rosa, and there was this little radio station was only on from sun up to sun down. But he played a little bit of everything, blues, country, rock, jazz. The kids today seem to stick with one genre. I learned to listen to all music.

Well, it’s impossible for me to understand how Bochy could use 5 pitchers in an inning to make sure he got a win against the Dodgers, and then not give a rat’s a## that Lopez had to face a righthander with two runners on last night, after Lopez had just been saved by a great catch by Span.
OK, so sometimes a manager gambles and loses. It happens. And even a Hall of Fame manager can have a crappy week.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 29, 2016 at 12:35 pm

Bochy is genius more often than not. That dude gets a free pass on that one, and a bunch more, IMO. No one, I don’t care how damned good you are, is going to be right all of the time. And it is not just on Bochy. If he picks some one to fill a need, then they need to perform. Gearrin was adamant that he “did not do his job.”

  17. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 29, 2016 at 11:40 am

In the bigger picture, the NL West in general has teams scrambling to deal with injuries. The Dodgers will start yet another rookie pitcher tonight, Brock Stewart.
Urias pitched pretty well last night, even with pitch-count issues. The Dodgers will be shutting him down at some point, though, as they decide what his total inning limit will be.

  18. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 29, 2016 at 11:44 am

Gearrin showed last night the problem a pitcher can have when he has TOO much movement on his pitches. Those pitches were sailing all over the place with no control whatsoever.

He’s due for free agency in the fall and the financially questionable Pirates may not want to give him a qualifying offer. Now i know that the Bucs have been taken in trades by SF in the not too distance past, but would they possibly bite on a pair of former Giants high draft picks Chris Stratton and Kyle Crick?

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on June 29, 2016 at 1:02 pm

There was some talk, a lot of it directed at the Giants medical staff for not anticipating the delayed onset symptoms and for leaving him in the game after he got hit. That’s what I remember anyway.

  23. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on June 29, 2016 at 1:12 pm

Blowing two 3-run leads at home is disappointing no matter how you frame it. Suarez was doing a nice job and I would have liked to see him finish the 6th. Not saying that would’ve been the difference but I think he was pulled too quick.

Bottom line, the bullpen sucked ass all the way around last night. I don’t have any real animosity towards the A’s, but I’m sick of this bugaboo they seem to have over the Giants. The G’s have had years where they did good against them, but since the fucking Bay Bridge exhibition games, which always seemed to get the Giant’s season off on a losing note, getting creamed in the ’89 Series and these fucking interleague games I’ve about had it with them

How delayed was the onset for Panik? 4 days? I’ve had a few concussions, and a couple of them I was pretty much waylaid immediately, and got worse. The other couple I just felt bad for a few hours.

Seeing the Merc, they said this:

The Giants thought Joe Panik was out of the woods after he passed three days of concussion tests on the last road trip. But when it comes to brain injuries, the map can be inscrutable at times.

Ten days after getting struck by a pitch on the back of his helmet, Panik reported “feeling a little something there,” to trainers, according to Manager Bruce Bochy. The Giants scratched Panik from Tuesday’s lineup, and were awaiting the results of additional tests before finalizing a roster move.

This isn’t the ‘laughing it off’ I thought it was, but at least they were following the protocol for the allotted time.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 29, 2016 at 7:46 pm

    Ahhh . . .

Tejada provides another middle infield option for the organization. He’s a steady but unexciting player who generally rates just below average at the plate and with the glove at short. He struggled early in St. Louis, slashing just .176/.225/.235 over forty trips to the plate.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 29, 2016 at 7:52 pm

I am okay with Posey as is. We all know the team does not have to hit the long ball to win games. The team is 29th in the majors in HRs, yet they are within a whisker of having the best record in all of baseball.

Posey in the last 28 days has done this:

      .316 .389 .430 .819 with one dinger, and 12 RBIs.

And I agree with Flav, I think he is not 100%. But regardless, I will bet you a cold beer right now that when the season is all said and done, Posey will be hitting around .300, and will have somewhere around 20 bombs and 80-90 RBIs. That coupled with his work behind the dish, I think he is the least of our worries. Just my opinion.

      lulz!

Williamson looks like a kid who knows he’s gonna get beat up after school…

Seems just a second ago Peavy was at 44 pitches. Now he is at 53 and counting. We should have been outta this inning a long time ago. Some shoddy-assed D out there tonight.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:00 pm

      that was a mistake, he’s at 54

  56. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:00 pm

Peavy was sailing along until the two bozo’s showed up.

  57. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:03 pm

All interleague play does is break up the rhythm of the games that do matter, that is divisional and league games. Every year these fucking A’s games fuck up the Giants one way or another. And right now Bochy is in as big a slump as anyone one else. Send Williamson down.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:06 pm

too bad we didn’t trade Williamson for Leake instead of Duvall, eh? hindsight…..

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:13 pm

Evidently the Reds were too smart for that.

  58. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:05 pm

I would put that Tejada drop up there with one of the worst I’ve ever seen a professional ballplayer drop. There wasn’t a single thing difficult about that. K/K said the ball drifted. It wasn’t hit high enough to drift. He just butchered the catch…..

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:07 pm

      Drifted my ass…

Well gang. The pit has opened up. When 3 regulars are out and the farm is mostly producing retreads and rejects this is what can be expected. Perhaps some AL team would take Williamson along with a starter “prospect” for a modestly competent reliever.

  60. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:06 pm

This shit has been painful so far, so I’m taking my ass out to the hot tub with a cocktail. Hopefully I come back in and our boys are stomping the crap outta the A’s. Cannot wait until we are playing someone besides the fucking A’s.

  61. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:07 pm

Why is he even in there after Gillaspie’s 4-hit game last night? So what if there’s a lefty on the mound.

  62. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:10 pm

Tejada is to 2016 what Dan Uggla was to 2014.

  63. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on June 29, 2016 at 8:11 pm

Way too early to freak out but I think we just need to weather the A’s voodoo attack but Tejada amd Perez are probably not long for Giants world….

I saw him at a concert in Berkeley about five years ago. I didn’t realize he was that old.
It was a Tom Russell concert. Russell pointed him out to the crowd, and said a lot of cool things about him.
