Post Flapalooza, What’s Left?
I didn’t think this trip through the AL world would go very well and so far it’s teetering on the edge of complete failure. If not for the great vibes created from the Flap Nation check ins, we would be enraged. But, seeing the pics of Blade, Chi, Loo, MacDog, GH, San Dawg and sons has kinda dulled the edges of our swords.
Now that the crew is breaking up and wandering back to where they came from, I am starting to get my “slow burn” back on.
This is a HUGE start for Smarge. He’s been average since his dominant start in Tampa. The deck will be stacked against us again today with what will likely be the most underwhelming of line ups. The weather will be decidedly un-AT&Tish. And it’ll still feel like an early start for our boys.
But if Smarge can come out smokin’ I’d feel ok about this game. We’ll see…..
______________________-
So I wrote what I wrote about Smarge and I just read that Cueto is pitching today. Not sure when that happened.
another pic of The Gang. When I look at this pic I start hearing the beginning sound track of Reservoir Dogs in my head….

Love it! Love all the Tarantino flicks…my absolute favorites. Especially the Kill Bill flicks. My absolute favorite – Django Unchained!
Someone has got to put and end to this shit sandwich of a road trip.
Great pick. DJ rocking the road jersey, playing it cool. I don’t know why but I always pictured him as a 4 foot tall Asian dude. Lulz.
Cueto going today instead of Smarge.
I gotta go on the Blade diet…
don’t do anything to lessen the resplendency of your hair….
No shit! I have a good friend I met in the Air Force, 1977, native San Franciscan who (with the same hair), could be Loo’s brother! Loo was rocking a 27 Marichal jersey! Mad love for that jersey and to Loo for wearing
ICYMI … at the end of the last thread an excellent Willedav post & a classic Loo (hilarious).
I don’t like the Yankees logo above Loo’s head. Can we photoshop reality?
On something called the Newark Airport Express (Port Authority bus). Essentially, part 2 of my journey home, as I just got off the 2 train —> Times Square and walked via a tunnel to the Port Authority building. Anything to avoid the sun.). I’m useless typing on a phone, so I’ll have to wait until I get to the.airport, where I can break out my tablet/keyboard. I will have plenty of time, as my plane doesn’t leave until 9 or so.
I HAVE WALKED THAT TUNNEL, OFTEN, AND NOT TOO LONG AGO. SUBTERRANEAN NEW YORK, WITH ALL ITS CRAZY, BUBBLING, FERVENT, SCHITZY, PULSATING wonder. (Sorry. capslock was on, and I too lazy to retype.)
Pawlie, in response to your question from a couple of days ago. No, I wasn’t in NYC during the Dylan period. My first residency was ’75-80 as a student. Then 2004-2013.
Blade, great pix on Facebook!
Mac – how can I find you on Facebook? You can find me as Chuck Marchant.
Safe travels, Blade! Happy Trails, bro!
Something like 56 hours with power down as a major thunderblunder roared through here late Wednesday night. Guess i didn’t miss much so far as the Giants go. Three ! errors on Crawford and the other Brandon 1 for his last 25. Baseball gods are in high good humor picking on the Gigantes after tossing a few bones their way shortly before the Break. So how do we get unbroken?
Excellent question Stix. In this NY series in particular, I believe we have to somehow break this pattern of our starters being a sluggish out of the gate; pitchers giving up runs early; hitters not taking advantage of mistakes early on. Yanks have a helluva BP. We got to them yesterday, sort of … but we can’t expect that to happen again.
We need some major adversity for any chance to continue the “Even Year Magic.” The shenanigans since the all star break is a beginning.
Don’t Stop Believin’!
Yeah, I like that Chi … In practical terms, I’m not sure what it means exactly but I like it!
Being a relative newcomer here I find it interesting that coinciding with the epic Flap gathering in the East was a corresponding introspection — near the end of yesterday’s thread — on the roots of this blog byway of some reflection and discussion on its seeds in the ‘Splash’, and the troll phenomena which ultimately prompted Big Flavor to have his ” Let there be …” creative vision. Fascinating stuff, and deep thanks to Flav for creating this place for a brotherhood to form and thrive.
I have lost count how many times I have thanked Flav for creating this blog that has grown into a community of baseball brotherhood. I have met so many righteous people her, both via the online ether-sphere, and also, in person. One of life’s true blessings!
Ha! Reservoir Dog reference. Love it. Tarantino is one of my favorites…dude is pure genius.
So sorry we did not bring some magic mojo boys. But sans losses, it was a monumental trip for me. Thanks Craig! This trip never happens with “The Flap!”
I will try to follow the game while in transit!
Blade, SanDiggity (andTrevor), Loo and Mac, it was great meeting you. Truly lifetime memories for me!
Feeling blessed!
GO GIANTS!
“WITHOUT The Flap”…
I just got settled into my seat at the airport and I’ve somewhat gathered my thoughts about this trip. First and foremost, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this trip, despite the 2 losses incurred by the Giants. That didn’t even faze me. I know we have an excellent team and as Flav and others have indicated, we’ll be all right. It’s fantastic that we built up such a significant lead over the rest of the division and I certainly expected one, two or even three periods of sustained losses this season. Oh well . . .
Chi, thank you for the invite. I really enjoyed your company and you really touched my heart – once at the 9/11 memorial; last night during the game – when you were talking about how much this trip meant to you, as well as Flavor and other Flappers; and, when we were on the Subway going home from the game last night. I will not share anymore about this, as all three were private moments between us (albeit, you are free to share whatever you want). Bottom line? You’re someone who wears his emotions on his sleeve and most important, there is zero artifice about you. Proud to call you a friend.
Loo, you touched me as well . . . I think I told everyone about my first week in AA, where I had just quit using alcohol and drugs, i.e., I was very confused at the time and was beginning a spiritual journey to rediiscover myself. I remember how much I hated people hugging me at AA meetings, especially guys . . . The first time it happened, I flinched and thought, “what the fuck is this guy doing?” Losing my brother and the 3 years which followed, left me bankrupt emotionally. Consequently, I have learned in sobriety via my spiritual and philosophical journey, to love once again. Fast forward to meeting Loo – he hugged me upon 1st seeing me at Yankee Stadium. What was natural for him, I had to relearn back in September 1986. Loo is a very giving person. Quite helpful and easy to chat with. I will savor meeting you dude for the rest of my life! Now, I hope you don’t get pissed, but I will first give you a compliment, then follow with my observation (which you might not like. lulz). Loo, you look like Sam Elliot. A dead ringer. Sheesh, I didn’t even see your eyes, as you wore your sunglasses all evening (who does that?). Now, this is the part you might be upset about – you sound exactly like Woody Allen. Seriously. Other Flappers????? Yes or No? Regardless, I kept on hearing Woody’s voice. Hilarious.
Mac, we met again. You’re a wealth of information and I actually wish we could have chatted more last night. I still remember our great lunch in Philly and being introduced to that sandwich (forgot what it was called, but it was excellent). More important, your stories about baseball and your career as a newspaper writer. Amazing life! Thank you for showing up. It meant the world to me.
Peter, is one of the most “chill” people I have ever met. Love the vibe and aura I get from you. Nada bothers SanDog . . . I actually try to live my life that way, without expectations and I can tell when someone else goes with the flow as you do my man. I was cracking up when you were in the lounge chair sitting adjacent to the Catholic Church grave yard with Al Hamilton buried a few feet away (grin). Peter was just soaking up the rays and people watching. Great look! Also, I mentioned your son earlier. Again, great kid . . . I really enjoyed his company during the first part of the day.
Got more, but this is enough for now . . . 🙂
This doesn’t mean you’ve sworn to never go back to Bangkok, right?…
Actually, the next trip will probably be to Myammar and Vietnam.
Didn’t Burma just come out of decades of police state?
Yes, snarkk. They have opened it up to tourism the last few years and it’s one of the few countries I have not visited there. Famous for their temples and unblemished beaches (albeit, they are tough to get to due to a poor transportation system).
Very nice. Was that you who came up with the Sam Elliott reference of “Lifeguard” era? That’s a good one. I can hear a little Woody Allen in there, too.
Yes, I told him that last night. However, I didn’t mention the Woody Allen reference . . . I didn’t want him to possibly be pissed. Glad you “hear it” too . . . Wasn’t certain I was imagining it. Perhaps, it’s the Brooklyn accent, coupled with the voice that makes me think Woody Allen. Dunno . . . It was like a V8 moment when I said to myself, “Holy shit, Loo is doing an impression of Woody fucking Allen.” lulz
Epic post. Thank you for the kind words, Blade. You are, and always will be, my Brother From Another Mother. Your words touch my heart my friend, and your friendship means the world to me. I agree with your observations about the other Flappers, except the Sam Elliot and Woody Allen references. Loo was great. The second he walked into the bar next to Finnerty’s, I KNEW it was Loo! And we embraced in a huge hug! Loo, it was beyond word to meet you, brother. The day will be fresh in my memory for this lifetime and all I the future.
Mac – I agree with Steve’s words. It was cool to meet you and get to know you. I had no idea about the McClatchey connection and your chapter in NorCal (Rio Linda). Keep writing, brother. Your words always paint a wonderful picture my friend. I am truly happy to have met you.
SanDiggity – it was great to see you again, friend. The day spent at the 9/11 Memorial, and on the Staten Island ferry and around Manhattan (Finnerty’s, Wall Street, and the Trinity Church with you and Trevor was great. I dig your boy, he is a cool young man. Wish him my best, and the same to you. Next year, I hope to meet up with you for a Giant game in San Diego!
I could go on-and-on. It is so hard not to…the experience was just wonderful in so many ways.
Thanks again for the kind words, Blade. The feelings are murual. Looking forward to seeing you in Denver in September and watching the Giants put an ass-whoopin’ on the Sherpas!
Chia-Blade: You know I don’t write much (a little something at the end of the last thread) but you guys are great and I had a tremendously good time meeting and hanging out with you. Thanks for writing nice things about me and get home safe.
BTW, SanDawg and I got engaged on a packed, sweaty D train heading home. We haven’t decided where were going to live yet. I think poor MacDog’s had enough of my nonsense. It might’ve been the GW Bridge LSD story. I don’t blame him.
Great pull, Loo. My favorite Woody Allen flick, though I haven’t seen ’em all. Set in SF, too. I’m a Bogart fan, too, so it’s all good in that one…
I was on my phone and really couldn’t watch this . . . Got home and that’s hilarious. Yep, Loo equals Woody. 🙂
Bochy needs to get creative to get a win. When guys are on base, put pressure on the defense with a steal, a double steal, hit and run, safety or suicide squeeze, something. This constant RISP on the floor says the team is in a constipation scoring mind set, trying to get something happening without doing anything different. You don’t just keep eating that half a loaf of Rainbow Bread hoping the blockage will release. Ya gotta eat prunes, or take a high colonic, one or the other…
Good point snark … Brings to mind that classic definition of insanity, right? I cannot argue with that. We gotta switch up, take some risks …eg. For starters, let’s have Mac & Parker out here in the outfield more often.
They need to get back the Mojo they had in the second Boston game! THAT is our Giants! This is a hiccup. I have made many reference of late about the need for some adversity.
Remain Calm, and win a World Series.
Four in Seven! Humm Baby – Let’s Do It Again!
This East Coast Flapalooza reporting was a hoot. Sounded and looked like a great time. The next one should be at Wrigley. Chicago’s a great town…
Wrigley is my next bucket list stop. Maybe next year…hard to tell, Gail and I are going to San Juan and Orcas islands next year for a couple of weeks, so Wrigley may have to wait another year.
We need to plan a Flapalooza meeting in the Windy City, boys!
Just got back from a couple days on the coast. Trying to catch up on all these great stories. Seeing that picture of Loo makes me want to catch the next flight to Laguardia. Fuck the Giants games, I just want to party with that dude.
You would NOT be disappointed, Wilco!
I’ll second that WJ!!
Loo is a party machine!
I was at my local watering hole last night and this one gal thought he was Howard Stern lol.
I was thinking more in line with a J Giles Band muscian..
lulz
So cool you guys got to Trinity Church. My father in law grew up in upper east side and went to Trinity School and their commencement in high school was at that chuch. The Hamilton grave is one of the coolest and unheralded things in NY.
OK now going Reservoir Dogs. I am huge Tarantino fan as well Chi. Pulp Fiction still comes in #1 for me. And how appropriate that two of these Flappers have Dogs associated with their Flap names in relation to Reservoir Dogs.
But if we are to assign the characters then there is no question that Blade is Steve Buscemi as Mr. Pink. Making you Chi Harvey Keitel’s Mr. White. San Dog none other than the sadist Michael Madsen and think that is Mr. Blonde.
MacDog gets the older wise guy Mr. Blue…you’re my boy Blue….OK different movie.
Thus giving Loo with a haircut and an accent tweak to make it more Woody Allen than a Brit playing a Yank accent with Tim Roth as Mr. Orange…taaaaah duuuuummmm….must win game!!!
I WANT ANOTHER COLOR!
But you are so Mr. PINK Blade…he carries the movie…
That is so fucking cool, GHead – Keitel is my favorite character in that flick! LOL…
Hey Baldy, i was at columbia 76-80. where were you? nyu?
NEW SCHOOL!!!
Not juliard?
That heat you all had at the game last night has moved into Rhode Island!!! I’ve never felt it reach 93 here…but speaking of heat, if you all manage a future DC Flap Fest, I will arrange a tour of the Capitol for you Flappers…but you west coasters who suffered last night have never felt anything like a DC summer night game…
I went to the Capitol years ago with the Air Force (Pentagon/Capitol week long gig on how bills are introduced and passed. Loved the walking memorial part of the trip.
Side note…the ultimate move for Hillary would have been to name Kasich as her VP to unify the country. She may have won about 40 states….
Damn, whatta great concept! Do you think he would have accepted?
Sorry missed this earlier Baldy. Melting here on the east coast. Remember not only did he not show up to the Republican convention in his own home state,Trump and his people belittled him.
I think Bill Clinton would have been the one who could make the sale. Could have offered him a lead role in budget planning and when Bill was President Kasich was House Budget chairman and not only did they balance the budget, they ran a surplus for a couple of years until 9/11…
Chi town would be awesome next year. Been to writ let in 1968 and 1995. My uncle whose name is surprisingly Charlie, still lives on the north side. Loo I’ll buy your ticket. I got to meet you.
The Flap needs to storm a top Chop House and a couple of Blues bars!
I can vouch that this is a good one, or at least was when I was there years ago…
http://www.chicagobluesbar.com
If the Giants don’t score this inning, I’m becoming a Mariner fan…
Maybe one of these days, Chuck.
I’m closer with you than my real uncle…
I’m going to the Friday game this year (Labor Day weekend), Saturday, I’m going to a Taste of Polonia (great Polish festival) . Come on down Charlie, should be fun.
Wow belt looks lost. Trade him!
this offense is a joke.
Seriously?
ML teams score 94% of the time with runners on 1st & 3rd – no outs according to Yankee broadcast…
So, the Giants are in the top 6% !…
Do u think Crawford is hurting in some way we don’t know about?
He probably needs a mental day off. Who’s the backup SS now?
Pena?
Why are the fuckin’ lights on?
Belt and Posey
Things ain’t looking rosy.
Belt Sucks.
Posey Sucks.
Roses Suck.
There was a trivia question at the game last night that none of us there have answered yet.
What pitcher won 15 games in a season as both a Giant and a Yankee?
I don’t know if they specified San Francisco or not. Mac saw it on the scoreboard I think.
I just want the right answer – not guesses…
My buddy heard it on the radio-cast standing in the food line.
This is pathetic.
He other team scoring on an error. How odd.
Hey Ewisco .. I responded to your earlier query but here it is again: I was at the New School (for social incompetence) 😉
I saw that. I thought maybe juliard. 🙂
Did u date any FIT girls?
No Julliard .. in retrospect I kinda regret that. Music program at NS was in its infancy and I was involved with some experimental pilot programs .. fell in with a crowd of maniacs … I could have used a little more discipline but i’d come out of a rigid conservatory in Canada so, I wasnt having any of that!
No, they were all fatsos…
I dated a girl going to college in Oneonta .. wild late night rides (her car) from NYC through the Catskills .. cant believe I survived those weekend jaunts.
I missed the beginning of the game. How did Mac get thrown out on Pena’s 2b? Was it another Kelly gaff?
Giants are just embarrassing themselves. Can’t field. Can’t hit.
Mac gets the run back!
I think we cursed the Giants. Began with Flavor and Sandiggity in San Diego . . . Then the “Flabola virus” was spread to Boston by Chi, Giant Head , and I. Full blown epidemic when Mac and Loo showed up last night. I don’t think the CDC can help either.
Only a Zumiee antidote might help . . . Dunno.
According to my records, Zumiee fattens up on sub .500 teams…
Right now span and pagan are the same player. Pagan actually seems better with rest. Put one of those guys out there everyday and play Mac and parker. Mac hit that off a righthabder so no platooning!!
Great observation Ewisco! Im guessing at the smaller sample size but in terms of run production id think Mac & Parker have relatively better numbers.
They just seem to have more upside than span, pagan and blanco.
Loo— I can’t even find a pitcher who has won 15 games COMBINED for each franchise. Here’s the list of players who have played for both teams:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/friv/multifranchise.cgi?level=franch&t1=SFG&t2=NYY&t3=&t4=&submit=Find+Players
Wow, except for Whitson, who was one of my incorrect guesses when I was laying awake at 4 AM.
Mac’s buddy musta heard wrong. Thanks for clearing that up.
SanDawg will be relieved, too. He’s actually on top of the Freedom Tower trying to figure it out…
I may be in error, but I believe the only player ever to play for NYY, NYM, SFG, and LAD (NY teams and their successors) is Daryl Strawberry — and those are the only teams he ever played for.
Vizcaino and Ledee, too but they also played for other teams. Might be one more guy – not sure…
Loo, don’t find another guy because I told a guy who runs a trivia contest he has to use this!
Whitson was my first guess too. Then I saw (ultimately remembering) how bad he was in NY. After that I said fuck it and went to baseball-ref.
Been listening on KNBR. I think the TV is blacked out for me on MLB. It’s the first live action I’ve followed since the ASG. Egad. We just can’t catch a break. Miller and Flemming were waxing enthusiastically about Mac Williamson’s AB last night. They played a clip by Bochy, who said it may’ve been the best AB all year. Took three straight sliders from Miller with an 0-2 count and then doubled, right?
Today Mac makes a significant error and then homers. Hasn’t he done this before this year, possibly twice?
Given Williamson’s power, I’ll take some of his bonehead fielding any day over Blanco. Blanco has bonehead base running of his own, and a noodle bat. I’d keep Blanco for late inning defense, of course that assumes the Giants at some point in the rest of the season will have a late inning lead…
bassbaldy,
I heard Bart Giamatti at the New School, talked to him. Was cool. In the eighties.
Wow! What was the topic of his talk?
the stuff that became his oft quoted book, green fields of baseball, timeless, etc.
look at this haul!
Ken Rosenthal @kyle24lamb 9m9 minutes ago
Texas Rangers have acquired Chris sale from the Chicago white Sox’s. Rangers will send Mazara,Gallo, profar, Branson and Tate to Chicago.
And Sale not going to the Dodgers; cool.
That’s an amazing trade. Sale was flailing in his last few starts. I like what the White Sox got, especially Nazara, Gallo and Profar. Love the depth.
The guy just sang God Bless America twice. Never heard that before…
Maybe it was for North and South America.
He had some impressive pipes so I didnt mind at all.
For all the God blessing America going on at all these ball games, you’d think America would be in better shape right now…
Pagan played that ball like a kid at the home run derby…
Giants are showing themselves to be west coast pussies when it comes to this weather. All these errors are evidence of that.
Pagan fucking butchered that play.
The Rangers are tea-baggin’ the rest of the league with this trade. They give zero fucks. That’s 2 years in a row they paid up for a front line starter. Impressive.
Fuck, they gave up a lot, but Sale seriously beefs up their rotation. When he’s on, he’s flat out filthy.
The Rangers might be the ballsiest team in baseball. I have a strong hunch the Astros were going to make a deal for Sale involving their #1 prospect Alex Bregman (why the hell else hasn’t he been called up) and then the Rangers said, check mate mofo’s. Texas sized balls in Arlington.
This late inning tie crap looks familiar. And, with the Giants Pen as is, that ain’t good…
FOX is saying no trade. What’s up with that?
Yankee broadcast said Sale was scratched with the flu.
Nothing about a trade…
everything I’m reading says done deal
Rosenthal on FS1 broadcast of Giants game just gave some lame excuse about Sale being sent home for club violation or some shit. I might have to rewind to get this right.
Lopez starting the next inning just feels wrong.
What the hell is going on with Crawford?
I think craw has a small back issue. Not enough to make him cone out but affecting his throws and bending and hitting.
That would explain the errors.
Yeah, Loo, I guessed Whitson who did win 15 for each team, just not in one season. I’m drawing a blank on anyone else.
Per Flav’s link, there ain’t no one else, LJ. I think the question was mis-heard at the game…
finally somebody woke the fuck up out there. Nice play.
Wow ..Pagan!
That was … fucking …. ELEGANT!!!
Rosenthal now saying no trade. Now I’m wondering if that was a fake account that posted it.
I think so. Sounds like he was sent home for some sort of “clubhouse incident.” Weird.
Acccording to Yank announcers, White Sox just announced Sale was scratched due to a clubhouse altercation, not the flu…
Now that’s how you make up for a boneheaded error. Great play.
All this Sale bullshit going down and I almost forgot to fade him from my DraftKings lineup.
Parker needs to park one about 440 into the RF upper deck…
Hard to do when Bochy just PHs for you…
I don’t get that, at all. Brown was just as likely to K as Parker, the lefty righty calculus goes out the window when a guy is throwing 104. And, Parker is more likely to hit one out…
Plus, Parker is lost for potential extra innings.
Sale got scratched and sent home for a *non-physical clubhouse incident.* WTF? Dealing drugs? Saying bad words to a clubbie? THis is totally bizarre.
I wonder if the trade was aborted after they made the decision to scratch Sale and then they came up with this lame excuse as to why he isn’t pitching.
Brown for parker?
Is Brown catching now? If he’s back on the bench, and Buster is catching for the duration of extras, then I really don’t get that move…
Brown is now the dh, I think. He could catch later if Buster has to leave the game since Brown is part of the lineup. Then the Giants would lose the dh spot for the rest of the game.
Posey’s spot would become the pitcher’s spot if he has to leave.
Thanks zum. I forgot about the damn DH. Still, Parker is out of the game if it’s still tied for a few innings. I’d rather have a real HR threat in there…
Somewhere over the last 2 days Pena has just turned into a completely overmatched player at this level. Pretty much as soon as he made that great catch, actually…..
Just curious, has Blade met pretty much everyone on the Flap?
+ every woman in Asia.
Yeah, you right.
Think about that. Giants are trying to score against the most badass reliever in MLB, with Grant Green, Williamson, and Pena. And, Green got a damn double. Fact is, lack of Pence and Panik is really hurting now. Duffy was crap hitting on the road, so I don’t think he’s missed much at the plate. Gillaspie is actually hitting over .300 as a starter…
I’d leave Osich in, too. Lefties up. Thing is, Osich staying in much longer is a scary deal…
I found a replay of yesterday’s Yanks radiocast and heard the trivia question/answer: Who was the only pitcher to win at least 15 career games for both the Giants and the Yankees? It’s Whitson.
Should the Giants season go down in flames, the following letters will appear on the tombstone: R.I.S.P.
Nice
The Osich walk of the game is sponsored by….
There’s your Osich walk. The guy just cannot avoid giving bases away. And, to the 9 hole hitter…
To a .192 hitter.
I think Posey darkens his hair…
Osich, is this guy a mental midget like Strickland? What is the deal with this guy? Every game with this Pen crapping all over itself makes acquisition of Pen help more expensive. I’ve seen enough of Osich, isn’t there anybody in Sac that’s as bad as this guy?…
Casilla to the rescue?
Chances are it shouldn’t take long for the game to end…
By rule, Casilla has to stop at the mound before he walks off…
Lulz!
The quality chasm between the 3 Pen guys of Yanks v Giants is a Grand Canyon …
Casillia looks like he is trying to decide how he wants to lose the game .. “hmm, should I give up a bomb? walk off hit batter? Walk off walk?
Don’t forget wild pitch…
Oh yep?
Decisions, decisons”
